Chester beer awards winners Local beer makers and sellers did well at the recent Chester Beer Awards night held at the Deva Tap. “This year the nominations were more diverse than the years before”, said Katja Knox, from Chester Beer Blog, the organisers of the event. “We’ve had some great pubs open, and new breweries have started coming forward too. 2017 was an exciting year for local beer and I believe this is reflected in the nominations, too.” The Best Pub award was for the third time won by The Cellar, Chester, and accepted on their behalf by Andrew Atkinson, who runs the pub. He said the team was “chuffed” to win the coveted award again. The Best Pub Grub award was won by Artichoke bistro and for the third year running Chester Beer & Wine claimed the Best Beer Shop award. The much-coveted Best Bartender award was scooped by Sophie Hooper at The Cellar, Chester due to her unbeatable beer knowledge and for never failing to recommend a suitable beer, no matter how obscure the taste of the customer. Katja added: “Every year we’re blown away with the support we receive from the nominees and the public and that just speaks volumes of what an amazing bunch of people we have in our bars and breweries in Chester.”

Hospice thanks its volunteers The Hospice of the Good Shepherd held a thank you evening to show their appreciation to volunteers from across the local community. Held in the Hospice Café and Living Well Centre, the event saw hospice staff waiting on volunteers to say a big ‘thank you’ for the contribution they make to the running of the Hospice. Volunteer roles at the hospice range from receptionists, catering staff and fund-raisers to companions, retail assistants and drivers. Entertainment on the evening was generously provided by the Sing Me Mersey choir; John Holt, magician and beauty treats and a raffle prize from Kiehl’s Debenhams, Chester. Sue Beckett, who leads the volunteer team at the Hospice said: “Our volunteers do so much to support the running of the Hospice, so we wanted to show them just how much we appreciate their time. It is fair to say that the Hospice would not be able to continue to provide the high standards of care and support to people living with a life limiting illness without the support of our brilliant volunteers, so saying ‘thank you’ in this way is the least we can do.” Volunteering gives you the chance to meet people, make new friends, become part of a team and learn new skills while raising money for your local hospice. The Hospice of the Good Shepherd currently has volunteer roles available in the following areas retail shops, warehouse, van drivers and fund-raising department please email susan.beckett@hospicegs.com for more information.

New date for anniversary celebration 25 years anniversary celebration on 12th May 2018 We have been asked by the royal family and the English FA to change the date of our 25 year anniversary celebration from our original date of 19th May, to avoid a clash with the Royal Wedding and the FA cup final. It will now take place on Saturday 12th May!! During the day, we plan to arrange a football match, featuring as many of our past and present players as possible. We will follow this with an evening social event for everyone who has been involved with the club over the years i.e. players, committee members and their families. WHAT WILL YOU GIVE UP? BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Given anything up for Lent this year? A recent poll stated that over half of all Brits who give something up for Lent don’t last the 40 days and give in to temptation! Most of March this year will be in the season of Lent. During the weeks leading up to Easter Christians prepare for it by taking their spirituality particularly seriously. This period is called Lent. It lasts just over six weeks and it it began on Ash Wednesday (14th Feb). Tradition has it that on the day before Lent begins all the luxury foods that will be forsaken until Easter should be eaten up. The custom is kept alive today by eating pancakes. In the UK the day is known as Shrove Tuesday. ‘Shrove’ means to forgive. In much of the world the day is known as Mardi Gras (‘fat Tuesday’) and is marked by a carnival. Christians mark Lent by praying, confessing their failings and making decisions about how to live in a more godly way. Traditionally this has been made special by fasting. Today it can still involve giving up foods or activities that are in some way luxuries. This discipline makes prayer seem to have a sharper focus. For some years after the resurrection of Jesus his followers observed a complete fast from Good Friday until dawn on Easter Sunday. They went without any food and drink to mark out as special the time between Jesus’ death and 28 Tel 01244350398

the moment that it was first discovered that his tomb was empty. However, the rigour with which Christians observed holy days declined. In the 5th century church leaders were keen to mark the lead-up to Easter with a focussed period of devotion. In different countries, churches made that part of the year distinctive in different ways. It was not until about nine hundred years after Jesus that there was international agreement that there should be a season of serious prayer and repentance for forty days (plus Sundays) leading up to Easter Sunday. Forty days was the length of time that Jesus spent in the desert at the age of about thirty, dwelling on what the future shape of his life would be. In English it is called Lent, because that is the time of year during which daylight is lengthening in the northern hemisphere. Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday during Lent. In England during the sixteenth century it was an occasion to appreciate the motherly nature of the church. In recent centuries it has become a time to honour all mothers. This year Sunday 11th March will be Mother’s Day! However, Lent is not all about giving things up. It’s also about adding good things to our lives or to others’ lives -- the kind of good things that follow on what Jesus asks of us, especially that which relates to what we’re giving up. Try these: Reconcile yourself to

Do different acts of kindness for people throughout Lent by joining the 40acts generosity challenge 40 days, 40 reflections, 40 challenges to make a difference. Try reading Mark’s gospel in the New Testament, in it you can read about the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus, in sixteen short chapters! Finally why not consider getting along to a local church on a Sunday in March, Mother’s Day, Sunday 11th March, might be a good option or consider going along on Easter Sunday, April 1st to celebrate the end of Lent, not by just eating chocolate but by considering the most amazing claim ever made – that Jesus actually did rise from the dead!!

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

March highlights By March, spring will be here, the bulbs will be out, some trees and shrubs will be growing and we will hope that there isn’t a cold snap to damage new growth.

Pale yellow Primroses and Primulas in multi-colours will continue to flower in sheltered spots, along with some blue violets. I expect that blue Forget me Not will be starting to come out too and en-masse they make such a cheerful show. No need to sow seed, just let the plants set seed, shake them around and next year you will get a wonderful show. Another perennial that is good for early spring, will grow in dry light shade and has evergreen foliage, is the Epimedium x versicolour Sulphureum. With heart shaped leaves that turn bronze in winter it will bring forth stems with pale yellow flowers in spring. You can cut off the leaves to see the flowers as they form or leave the leaves on and hope the sprays pop up above the leaves. Continuing the yellow theme, the vibrant yellow flowers of Forsythia will be everywhere on the streets. These easy shrubs will form large twiggy plants with yellow flowers clustered on the leafless stems. You can grow as a hedge covered in yellow blooms before the leaves come out. Cut back just after flowering, to keep them within bounds. Another March flowering shrub is the evergreen Mahonia aquifolium Apollo. This is an unassuming low growing evergreen shrub (to 1m) often grown in shade to cover the ground and usually looking a bit tired as it is ignored. However, try feeding it in spring and you should be rewarded with clusters of yellow flowers. The photo is of a swathe of these shrubs grown as ground cover under taller trees and the scent from the flowers was quite superb. Work to do in the garden includes cutting back dead foliage from perennials, trimming the winter flowering heathers to encourage fresh new growth for next year and completing the pruning of roses. If you grow Cornus or Dogwood for the red or yellow stems, cut them back hard every two or three years to about 30cms tall and give them a good feed of general purpose fertilizer such as Growmore. Feed all trees, shrubs especially roses and perennials with Growmore or a specific Rose Fertilizer to give the plants a good start to the year. Weigh out the recommended dose as I find I don’t apply enough!

Hoole History Corner

The final part of a history walking tour led by Phil Cook, as described by Linda Webb, To Hoole Lane Lock and Hoole Lane Hoole Lane was the well-established route to Guilden Sutton, traditionally known as St. Ann’s Lane. It was informally called Workhouse Lane after the opening of the workhouse in 1878, but this name did not last. Brindley Place has replaced the buildings destroyed in an explosion and fire. The new complex is named after James Brindley, the great canal builder who surveyed the route of the Chester Canal to Nantwich and Middlewich in 1770. The site of Chester Engineering Company used to stretch along the canal here, and the site was the location of Looker’s until the late 1990s The small chapel with a spire dates from 1908. It was St. Paul’s mission, linked to the Church and its parish. It is thought that it may have been provided for the use of the travelling population of canal boatmen and their families. The Mission is also the work of John Douglas, now converted into houses, next to the lock keeper’s cottage. The black and white building is the Lock Vaults Public house. Between it and Station View Terrace, the AngloAmerican Company had a small depot just before the Second World War, listed in Kelly’s Directory 1939. In 1833 there were proposals to build a Birkenhead to Chester Canal that would have joined the Shropshire Union via a shallow lock just to the east of Hoole Lane Lock. The proposed route would have taken it through where Signal Court now stands, in a straight line roughly along what is now Crawfords Walk and Hamilton Street, passing just west of Newton Lane, curving gently at the junction of Brook Lane and Well Lane to pass through Upton and some of the site now developed as the Zoo, then crossing the Chester-Ellesmere Port Canal near Caughall. Had it been constructed, Hoole would have been an altogether different place. Here, the tower of the waterworks dominates the view. It is a prominent local landmark, also visible from many parts of Hoole. In the 1830s a pumping station was built at Barrelwell Hill to lift water out of the Dee, to be transferred by pipeline Proposed Canal 1833

to the Water Works alongside the canal, then filtered and stored prior to distribution. In 1889, the tower, with its 1,200 cubic metre capacity cast-iron tank was raised 20 feet and brickwork was added to cope with increased demand for water. On the opposite side of the canal Chester Cottage Improvement Company, founded in 1892 by the Duke of Westminster, built Tollemache Terrace, to help to improve social housing. The Terrace was in contrast to the nearby back to back terraces of Station View and Cross Street. The lock beyond Hoole Lane Lock, looking east, was originally called Spittle or Spittlefield Lock. It was built on land which belonged to the Hospital of St. John, a mediaeval foundation, hence Spittlefields. This name was in use in 1810. Gordon Emery, in ‘The Old Chester Canal-A History and Guide’, records the change of name in 1810, when Mr Jones of ‘the chemistry’ was instructed to lay no more soil on the towing path. In 1807 he had been granted permission to take cooling water from the canal for his steam engine, on condition that cinders from the engine be used to repair the tow path, and that he paid an annual rent of two guineas. Mr Jones, proprietor of the Gallic Acid Works near the Spittlefields, appeared on the Tithe Map for Great Boughton, on a site 80 yards east of the lock. The small chemical works probably used oak galls and bark to make the acid which was used in tanning. The name Chemistry Lock had become officially associated with this lock by 1856. The Canal Company appointed Samuel Dunning as the lock keeper, Hoole Lane and Chemistry Locks. Major and Co., listed as manufacturing chemists here, may well have taken over from Robert Lewis Jones, but after fires in 1845, 1852 and 1861, when the walls were ‘Much shaken such that the building will have to be erected afresh’, the works were transferred to Queensferry and eventually became part of the Midland Tar distillers. The re-alignment of Station View Road has been considered many times. The bridge over the canal at Hoole Lane was rebuilt in the early 1920s, but any re-alignment would require the widening of the bridge over the railway. Additional land has been purchased for this purpose.

A History Walking Tour around Hoole and Boughton – Part 3

ebb, from the Hoole History and Heritage Society The existing bridge is narrow and without footpaths, and requires reconstruction. After the Second World War, it was felt that, should the reconstruction be achieved, the road could be connected with Hamilton Street by widening Crawford’s Walk, creating a traffic link between Boughton and Hoole.

To Lightfoot Street and Westminster Road The brick arch on the canal side of the Westminster Road Bridge dates from the opening of the Chester & Crewe Railway on 1st October 1840, when the Chairman of the Crewe & Chester Railway Company was Jack Uniacke, the Mayor of Chester. The principal contractor on the line was Thomas Brassey. A note in the plans, dated November 1836, requires the road to be raised by 12 feet in order to pass over the railway line. The Act of Parliament which authorised the line was one of the first signed by Queen Victoria, ten days after her accession to the throne on 20th June 1837. Prior to the introduction of railways, it took a couple of days to reach London from Chester in the fastest stagecoaches, but, by 1848, it was possible to reach London by train in six and a half hours. Water Tower and Westminster Road Bridge over the railway line in the distance Land from the estate of Thomas Brassey was later purchased by the Chester Poor Law Union Guardians to use as the site of the new workhouse in Hoole Lane. A good view of Chester Station used to be possible from the footbridge which is now closed. There were railway allotments between the two View from Chester General railway bridges in the past, but the introduction Station 1962 of the Power Signal Box brought this use of the land to an end. There have been three major fires in the area of Lightfoot Street in living memory. On 8th May 1972 the brakes of a freight train failed, and it ran into Chester Station, carrying kerosene, sulphur oil and petrol. One of the tank wagons exploded and a major fire broke out, leading to the evacuation of properties in Lightfoot Street. Fortunately, the train had been routed into a bay in order to prevent its derailment, which might have led to much worse consequences.

On 25th October 1996 a large fire broke out in Pickfords warehouse. It took 100 firemen 12 hours to put it out. 12 houses on Lightfoot Street were destroyed and 100 people were evacuated. On 2nd December 2010 the large LNWR Goods shed was badly damaged by fire and the roof and gable ends were removed. After crossing the railway bridge towards Hoole, on the east side was the British Rail Staff Association Club, complete with its own miniature steam operated outdoor railway. Railway workers formed a close-knit community, working and socialising together. Anti-social working hours affected the way of life of railway families from the area until the mid- to late- eighties when employment patterns and transport changed significantly with the greater reliance on the car. At the junction with Lightfoot Street, Flookersbrook passes beneath the road. It was culverted in 1865. The culverts were made at Thomas Brassey’s Canada Works in Birkenhead. Looking across to Westminster Road, the white building is remembered as the Drury House Off-Licence. It was originally designed as a public house by John Douglas for the Drury Brewery but was not given a license. Mr. Crawford, whose name was given to Crawford’s Walk, and the building of Hoole Park, also had his name on this The Drury building in the 1870 Town Plan. It is a good point from which to remember the plans for a canal and a widened ‘through road’ which, if constructed, would have had great consequences in this area. l Website articles will be updated as new information comes to light.
