Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But

it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton

areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

RETURN OF THE 2CV Hoole Roundabout May 2016

9

BRIAN STRIKES BACK After a long winter snooze in a garage far far away.... The 2CV returns! With an upgraded chassis, a full service and even a further paint job, “Brian” is back.

Too long have the independents struggled against the myriad of flash, gas guzzling, ego boosting BMWs driven by many of those ‘dark side’ estate agents.

It has long been predicted that one day a bright star will rise in the east of Chester signifying the new dawn of estate agents with honesty, integrity and professionalism as their weapons. Those who remember the old ways talk of high customer service standards and pride in delivering results beyond client expectations.

The return of #Brian2CV heralds a sign of service standards rising again and shining brightly to light the way of home buyers and sellers in these hectic, busy times.

The story continues…

IT, Tea and Toast HOOLE Community Centre is encouraging everyone to have a go online by holding an “IT, Tea and Toast morning on Tuesday 3rd May, 10-12 noon. IT buddies will be on hand in Hobson’s Café where learners can take advantage of the fabulous offer of free toast with every hot drink purchased. Learners can bring along their own mobile phone, laptop, tablet or Ipad or use one that the centre provides. Volunteer Coordinator, Sally Dobbing, said: “Having the confidence and knowledge to use the internet can make a significant difference to people whether it is being able to keep in contact with friends or relatives, making GP appointments, shopping online or finding a job. We are aware that a high proportion of people over 55 lack basic digital skills so we are offering free support sessions in a warm and friendly environment. There is no need to book – just come along!”. IT Buddy sessions are also held every week on a Monday 2-4pm, Tuesday 10am-12noon, Thursday 13pm and every other Saturday 10am-12noon. Hobson’s Café, the onsite café, is staffed by volunteers and open Monday-Thursday 8.30 – 1.30. Staffed by volunteers, the café offers fair trade, organic coffee, excellent cakes and lunchtime specials. All the food is homemade on the premises, and there is always a healthy choice as well as indulgent treats! Special offers this month include a free slice toast with every hot drink ordered before 10.30am and a free children’s lunch with every adult meal on Tuesdays. Amy Edwards, café Manager says: “I’m delighted that our customers are enjoying Hobson’s Café. It’s thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm of the volunteers that the café is such a warm and welcoming place. We would like to open on Fridays as well so we’re recruiting more volunteers to come and join our team. Volunteering is a great way to make new friends and learn new skills, so if you feel like joining us, we’d love to hear from you.” For further information about the volunteer roles email us at volunteer@hoolecommunitycentre.org.uk or by phone Hoole Community Centre on 01244 342741. Hoole History Corner Ralph Earlam, Chairman of Hoole History and Heritage Society, looks at the railway

‘One of the most beautiful thoroughfares in Europe...’ !! THE western side of Lightfoot Street has been railway property since the arrival of the line from Crewe which opened in 1840. By the time Chester General Railway Station was built in 1848 the Railway Company had purchased lands in Hoole from Macclesfield School and the estate of John Lightfoot which included the stream known as Flookersbrook, which was diverted and eventually piped. The Station and the many lines that enter it were actually built on the boggy flood plain of Flookersbrook, which was the original boundary of the townships of Hoole and Newton with Chester, and early OS maps

show how it meandered across the Station site as far as Lower Brook Street. The Station’s water reservoir and gas works were located here with a house for the Station’s General Manager, the first being Robert Lewis Jones appointed in 1847. The house eventually became offices and Mr. Jones appears in the 1861 Census living at Brook Lodge on Hoole Road. Cattle pens were also built and the huge LNWR goods shed dominated the area. At the junction with Westminster Road Bridge allotments were provided for the use of railway workers. Lightfoot Street was not yet a road and it was not until

Brabner & Court, Solicitors from Liverpool, acquired lands from the estate of John Lightfoot in the 1870s that the street was built but only as far as Peploe Street (Westminster Road), the extension to Hoole Lane not being completed until the 1960s. In the 20th Century the Railway authorities released property not required for railway purposes. Pickfords had a warehouse here which was destroyed by fire in 1996 and in 2010 the goods shed which had become an Enterprise Centre suffered a similar fate; having a devastating effect on the nearby homes. Other land not needed for railway purposes was eventually developed for the light industrial

On the other side of Westminster Road Bridge the Railway Social Club was built (a model steam train used to operate here) and more recently Thomas Brassey Close has been erected named of course after the builder of Chester’s General Railway Station. ‘BEAUTIFUL THOROUGHFARE’? In the early 1890s there was at least one persistent complainant to the Hoole Local Board about the state of Lightfoot St but the Board agreed to “...treat the letters with contempt...” In 1893, however, with the prospect of the Royal Agricultural Show taking place in Hoole, the Hoole Local Board and the Joint Railway Companies

had agreed plans and costs for “...putting Lightfoot St in a proper condition...”. However, as the Cheshire Observer of 2nd May 1893 reported, “This thoroughfare which we are assured is going to be made one of the most beautiful in Europe is still unfinished...”. Tensions between the Board and the Railway companies led The Observer to report also that the Hoole Local Board would be “... unable to prevent the Railway Companies from using the road by strength of arms.” What a pity that we don’t know if any pitched battles were fought out on Lightfoot St in the 1890s over who had right of way ! Lightfoot St was part of the one- way traffic plan for the

thousands of visitors arriving by rail for the Royal Agricultural Show who would use the station entrance at what is now the Hoole end of the railway bridge. Hackney carriages would bring their passengers back down Hoole Rd, along Hamilton St, Peploe St (Westminster Rd ) and so back to the station entrance via Lightfoot St. On 22nd June 1893 the Observer printed an irate letter (from the resident whom the Local Board agreed, according to their minutes, to treat with contempt?). This complained that “...the working of the plan has caused universal irritation and execration...” and that “... repeated remonstrances ... have been met with an autocratic consideration worthy of the Czar of Russia.”

New public space opens at Chester Railway Station NEW public space has opened outside Chester Railway Station, marking the gateway to the city’s £100m Central Business Quarter. The Grade II listed ‘Carriage Shed’ next to the station has undergone a transformation and will now provide city commuters, residents and visitors with a new space. Carriage Shed, which will also be used as an outdoor events space, links to Muse Developments’ recently launched 70,000 sq ft office building One City Place and across the Shropshire Union Canal to the £20m Waitrose store and other shops in Boughton. More than £1.5m has been invested into the new public realm by Cheshire West and Chester Council supported with a grant of £617,550 from the European Regional Development Fund. The transformation includes the renovation of the Coach House, construction of a new Arriva Trains Wales store, a new glass roof, ‘living’ wall, planting and paving. Carriage Shed will have a dedicated events team and yearly events programme, as it looks to create an alternative venue for Chester’s entertainment. It will showcase everything from live theatre performances to themed monthly markets, which will be open to all residents of Chester as well as providing a unique venue to hire.

Phil Mayall, development director for Muse Developments, said: “Carriage Shed and the surrounding public realm provides the perfect setting for Chester’s new Central Business Quarter which will bring more than £96m to the city’s economy growth. “As well as providing an exciting new events destination for the city, the space will be open for the public to use. It will boost the connectivity in the area by linking Chester Railway Station to the surrounding business, leisure and retail opportunities and offer a unique event space in the heart of Chester.” Speaking at the launch, Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cllr Samantha Dixon, said: “For residents it’s also a vastly improved link between the station and the canal corridor leading to Boughton and Hoole. This has been transformed into a welcoming place and is so important for the city.” A full list of events can be found on the Carriage Shed website www.carriageshed. co.uk or follow Carriage Shed on Twitter @ CarriageShed, Facebook: /CarriageShed and Instagram: @CarriageShed for more information. The new public realm was designed by urbanism specialists Broadway Malyan and built by MPH Construction.

LIVING THE DREAM BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

EVERY now and then, when I have an evening off, I switch on the TV to watch something that requires no effort. You know what I mean a programme you can watch and not have to work out who the killer was or why did that person do that to another character in the programme! As I flick through the channels, I immediately wonder why I bothered. Andy Glover has lived in Every programme is either something that has been on before Hoole with his wife Sue for or something I would never want to watch. Of course the other 27 years. Andy began at alternative is a programme about people who are singing, dancing, Hoole Baptist Church, on skating, or playing football. It seems as though the whole world Westminster Road, as Youth has become obsessed with becoming famous and to achieve that Pastor, before becoming you have to get noticed. Saturday nights in May sees the ultimate type the Pastor and now Team of show I’m thinking of back on TV where this is played out before the Leader. nation – Britain’s Got Talent! Since the phenomena that is Susan Boyle back in 2010 the show IMHO seems to have lost its way! I can’t help but think, “What is all this doing to people?” Lots of people all wanting to ‘live the dream’ and ‘get noticed’. Yet they’re often the subject of ridicule where they don’t seem to care. I wonder if these people who crave fame and fortune do so because their lives are often empty and without hope. To be famous is now a career choice reinforced by the media’s obsession with celebrities and the lives they live which are played out in gossip magazines every week! I was recently reflecting and thinking how good it is to know Jesus and to have a relationship with God that is meaningful and real; this month it is 33 years since I first entered in this relationship, a relationship that answers the deepest longings people have to be loved and accepted for who they really are. I began to wonder if we have something so good, something that people need to hear about, what is it that stops us from ‘getting noticed’ for our faith? I don’t mean by performing on the stage but by living out our faith in a way that is visible for others to see. Here in Hoole and Chester many churches run projects and activities that are fuelled by faith, these seek to serve the local needs of our community. I like to call these “bowl and towel” projects. This is because of an amazing incident that we can read about from the life of Jesus found in chapter 13 of John’s gospel where Jesus washes the feet of his 12 disciples, he serves each disciple by taking a bowl and towel and meeting this basic need. (Remember they lived in Palestine a hot and dusty land where feet would get very dirty and smelly!) He did this menial task to demonstrate his love for them; for the churches in Hoole and Chester our community projects are an expression of our love and God’s love for the people who access these projects who have very practical and real issues that need help in addressing. Jesus once described Christians using the metaphor of light, as light shines in the darkness so the church needs to be like a lamp stand from which this light can give out the light needed so that darkness is expelled. A light can also be a guide helping to navigate ships through dangerous terrain and coast lines – a Lighthouse stops ships from crashing onto unseen rocks and so becoming shipped wrecked. Whether we demonstrate the love of God in our words and actions and help bring guidance to those times in life where it’s potentially a tricky navigation, we need the light in our lives to shine brightly, let’s get noticed, not necessarily by appearing on talent shows, but by living in such a way that we make a difference! 32 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

The SOUP project started in Detroit in 2010 as a means of getting people together to support small business ideas over a bowl of soup. A social enterprise combining crowd funding and collective positivity, four people are invited to present their ideas (no technology is allowed) for four minutes each, the audience can ask only four questions and then over a bowl of soup can vote for their favourite pitch. The winner takes home the pot of donations taken at the door, which is suggested at ÂŁ5. For some small businesses it is not about the money but the opportunity to network and gain some moral support for what they are trying to achieve. The Chester Soup will take place at Hobsons Cafe in Hoole Community Centre Westminster Road from 6.30 - 8.30pm. Please email Rachel on Rachelmacd15@ yahoo.co.uk pitches are not themed and will be included on a first come first served basis.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

MAY FLOWERS

FOR me, May means blossom on trees and shrubs in predominately pink and white, fresh new foliage, warm days and the promise of home grown vegetables to come. Wisteria flowers hanging in curtains on the plant is one of the most beautiful adornments to a house. The flowers are fragrant so do make sure some blooms are near enough to smell their scent. Best grown in a sunny sheltered spot with fertile well drained soil. Buy plants that have been grafted to get earlier flowering. They need good support and will happily grow around drainpipes or under gutters so keep them trained to stout wires or trellis. For something more unusual, and if you have space for a shrub up to 2m wide and tall, then Viburnum plicatum Maresii or

Lanarth have tiered branches covered with lacy white flowers in May or June. They like moist soil in full sun or light shade and are very hardy. A commonly seen shrub is Exochorda x macrantha The Bride. As the name suggests it has white flowers and grows into a mounded shrub about 1.5m tall and wide with arching stems. Not tidy but it looks great in the corner of a garden in full sun and almost any soil provided it’s not too alkaline or dry. Cut back just after flowering as it flowers on stems produced the previous year. Work to do in the garden includes pruning Forsythia and Ribes after flowering has finished. Plant seeds of runner beans, French beans, courgettes and squashes outside under some protection or in pots if

you haven’t already done so. Purple sprouting broccoli, peas, carrots, lettuce, radishes seeds can be sown outdoors. Plant out tomatoes and cabbages that have been hardened off when no frost is likely. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Tirley Garth near Willington, Tarporley is open on Sunday 8th and 15th May. This is a Grade II listed Arts and Crafts garden in Cheshire with formal and informal areas. The Rhododendrons and Azaleas are in full flower in May some of which are about 100 years old.
