It promises to be a great evening, bringing the whole community together and highlighting why Hoole is the best area in Chester to live. We’ve got pictures from the beach party which raised money for the lights. Elsewhere in the magazine there’s opposition to a potential supermarket at the site of the Elms surgery, St Martin’s Free School, Jonathan Seddon’s financial column, Thought for the Month with Andy Glover, community info and much more. Selling your home in the autumn & winter months D Hoole Roundabout November 2014
on’t be put off selling your home during the autumn and winter months - the buyers who are looking at this time of year are generally serious house hunters and there is usually less competition from other properties.
Our simple guide below is designed to help you achieve a successful sale during the next three to four months which could well see you settled into a new home by the spring! First impressions In the autumn and winter we tend to sell from the inside out, so ‘warm, welcoming and cosy’ is the aim of the game, but don’t forget about how people arrive at your front door. Make sure the path is cleared of leaves or snow. If it’s icy, spread some grit or sand and have a thick door mat waiting at the front door. If it’s wet or mucky ask people to remove their shoes and have somewhere to put them along with umbrellas or wet coats.
7
Warm anD inviting Make sure the house is warm but don’t cook your viewers! Have the central heating on and light fires, use lamps to create warmth and lighten dark areas such as halls and landings. Scented candles are good but be careful they’re not too overpowering. Warm some mince pies in the oven or have a casserole on low and let the smell drift through the house. Stepping out of a cold, wet miserable day into a warm, welcoming home can have nothing but a positive effect. tiDy garDen When it comes to the garden, sweep up fallen leaves, remove dead summer growth and again make sure paths and patios are clear and not slippery. If you have outside lighting, use it to light the garden particularly when the light is fading. It’s fine to show people pictures of your garden in bloom, but if your home has already been for sale over the summer make sure your brochure photographs are retaken and are seasonally correct. If you would like to discuss selling your home during the coming months, please contact Somerville’s Estate Agents on 01244 318777.

Academy pupils on tour in Hoole! St Martin’s Academy pupils brought their topic of The Elves and the Shoemaker to life with a visit to the cobblers in Hoole recently. Newgate Class were full of questions for the owner of Pioneer Shoe Repairs, on Faulkner Street, after spending weeks exploring the classic tale of the shoemaker that gets some unexpected assistance from a group of magical elves. Foundation stage manager Emma Boynton said: “The children really enjoyed seeing the real life skills that a ‘shoemaker’ needs. “They were able to see how a shoe is nailed, glued and fixed and were full of some very interesting questions, such as ‘which is your favourite shoe’, ‘how do you make high heels’ and ‘do you believe in elves’. “Afterwards to went to pick an elf cake from Chatwin’s and a drink suitable for an elf from Sainsbury’s. “Finally we went to the post office to buy a stamp so that we can send a postcard to the elves, telling them all about where we live. A very busy day for Newgate!” Miss Boynton added: “A huge thank you to all the business owners that were so welcoming to the children, especially Pioneer Shoe Repairs. It’s so lovely to see the children out and about in their local community, enjoying everything that Hoole has to offer.”

Summer fun keeps the Another big fund raiser took place to ensure that the Hoole Christmas lights can shine brightly this year. Organisers held an end of summer beach party at the Piper pub with many hundreds of pounds being pledged to the cause. This year’s lights switch-on takes place on Saturday 15th November, from 4.30pm with the illuminations around 6pm. We’ll keep you notified on www.hooleroundabout.com and via social media. It’s always a good event and it’s great to see the community come together to support the local shops. Left: Lisa Davies welcomed visitors in her wetsuit. WHAT’S ON EATEry idEA
We have got a little bit of inside information about the Suburbs sister Eatery aka ‘The Hollows’. They have brought you the cocktails and delicious lite bite meals to graze upon of a lunch and evening and now they want to give you a little bit more. Although nothing is yet set in stone the eatery idea I can imagine is only going to be welcomed by the people in Hoole. We will keep you informed of their plans and hopefully have some more news in coming editions.
BEN WiNS T
It seems The Suburbs are bringing more and more to Hoole. Not only did they bring a swanky new cocktail bar they are now winning awards too! This is no small award either. Ben Davies, from The Suburbs, entered the Bacardi Awards, biggest cocktail competition in the world and WON the national finals!

S TOp cOckTAil AWArd His Golden Age cocktail, consisting of Bacardi, creme de banane, yellow chartreuse, burnt butter syrup, lime juice and an egg white impressed the judges. Ben told us “The drink itself takes influence from 1920’s Cuba and the cocktail culture that surrounded that ‘golden age’ of cocktail bartending and the Club de Cantineros. “I would like to think the drink builds a bridge between the cocktail golden age and the current cocktail revival with the use of old, new and homemade ingredients.”

Lastly I just have to mention about the lovely ‘Thank you’ evening the owners set up and organised. Mid October was a time for the owners to say a big thank you for the support Hoole people have given the new business. They are coming up to their year anniversary and couldn’t have been prouder of all they have achieved in such a short amount of time, but realise they couldn’t have done it without the community support. So as a thank you, they put on an evening of complimentary drinks - and what a lovely treat it was! The general relaxed yet sophisticated ambience yet again didn’t fail to delight, locals spent the evening enjoying easy conversation and sampling some of their gorgeous drinks, which tasted all the more enjoyable as management picked up the tab!

HOOLE RANGERS FC
CONTRASTING FORTUNES Performances of the Hoole Rangers 1st team have significantly improved over the last four weeks. The first game was a tough match against Premier league champions and current leaders, Lache. In a really close fought contest, Hoole dominated possession for long periods, and were really unlucky to lose out by 2-1. After the game, even the opposition agreed that we deserved to take something from the game. The next game, away at Ellesmere Port town, Hoole won by 3-2, followed by a relatively easy 7-0 win over 2nd division Clubbies in the Senior Cup. The final game, away against a very strong Shaftsbury side, saw Hoole give away 2 sloppy goals in the first half, but then dominate the 2nd half, pulling a goal back with 10 minutes to go, only to concede the killer 3rd goal while pushing hard for the equaliser. So, we are now seeing the performances from the first team we knew they were capable of and we hope to get results going forward that will improve our current league position. However, the gap between ourselves and the current league leaders would suggest that our best hope for silverware this season is likely to be in the cups, where we are still involved in four competitions The Reserves in contrast have continued to struggle, losing 7-0 against title favourites Deva, followed by an 8-0 defeat against mid table side Franklyns. However, in what on paper looked like a very difficult Cup draw against Premier league side Kelma, Hoole reserves played an excellent game, twice going ahead in the first half, only to run out of steam a little towards the end of the game to lose out by 5-3. This performance shows that with the right players available we can become competitive and start to improve results.
Unfortunately, following the game against Franklyns, James Pike decided to step down as manager so we had to postpone the final game of this period against Crossway while we regroup and look at how we will move forward. We have advertised for a new manager, and in the interim, I will take over as reserves manager, helped by player Graham Scheuber. The repair work to Limewood Fields drainage system has meant parts of the pitch have been dug up. Although we have not had the volume of rainwater we had in October last year, the pitch appears to be coping well with the rain we have had, so are hopeful this problem has now been resolved. We plan to remain on the relocated pitch at the top end of the ground until the grass has fully recovered, but expect to be back on our own pitch by new year . We are always looking for new people to get involved with the club. With the exciting plans we have scheduled for the next few years, we are looking for : l New Players. We have 2 teams in the Chester & District League, one in the Premier league and the other in Division 1. l Team manager We are looking for a new Reserves team manager. Experience would be an advantage but not essential as we will provide as much support as required while the new manager settles in. l Sponsors. Helping fund items such as tracksuits, match balls, match fees etc. or maybe helping with the changing room refurbishment project l New committee members. to help run the club. If you interested in any of the above positions, please contact me on mobile / e-mail below and I will advise how you can get involved.

Big opposition to surgery supermarket plans
A total of 1,700 objections have been received about plans to convert the Elms Medical Centre into a Tesco store. The plans are due to go before Cheshire West and Chester Council this month and despite the volume of objections, local councillors are not at all confident it will be turned down. Lib Dem councillor Mark Williams admitted that planning law is narrow as to what can be regarded as legitimate objections. Even if Cheshire West planners were to refuse, there is a chance it will go through on appeal. The fear of local people is shoppers could simply by-pass the main Faulkner Street shopping area and get everything they need at Tesco, potentially putting the small traders out of business. The medical centre is closing next year and services at four local GP surgeries are moving to the new super centre on Delamere Street. As a result, the site will become vacant, so unless a new developer comes forward it seems likely that the Tesco store will materialise.

Look up....
and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about
Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

HOOLE’S COMMUNITY BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER Over the years I’ve heard people say many times that Hoole is a lovely place to live or work, they state that it has a different feel from the other suburbs around Chester, the comments usually reflect that there is something different about the community of Hoole.
Andy Glover has lived in I’ve often wondered what is it that makes the difference; is it the shops on Faulker and Charles Street? Certainly Hoole is very well served by Hoole with his wife Sue all the different shops and they do add a sense of community? Is it for 26 years. Andy began the local schools: Hoole Primary on Hoole Lane, St Werburgh’s & St at Hoole Baptist Church, Columba’s on Lightfoot Street and St Martin’s Academy on Hoole on Westminster Road, Road? Each school plays their part in creating community and I’m sure as Youth Pastor, before the governors, teachers and other staff are all working hard to provide becoming the Pastor and a great educational experience for the children of Hoole and Chester. Is now Team Leader. it the local churches, Hoole is served by 4 churches who work together not just providing Sunday services but many activities and community projects that offer all ages from the youngest to oldest, an opportunity to come together and experience community and friendship. There are other organisations and facilities all within Hoole that I could also list, youth clubs, pubs, bowling clubs, etc, etc each bring something unique and all add to what makes Hoole special. For me, the answer to the question, “what makes the difference in Hoole?” boils down to the people. Over 25 years I have met some incredible and wonderful people who live and work in Hoole, many have something in common, a willingness to get involved and be the difference. I love the following story because it reminds me that I/we can make a difference. In my work as a Church leader I often wonder if what I am involved in actually does make any difference, sometime the problems and issues of a person or in a community can seem insurmountable. If we focus on the enormity of some of these issues it can seem that any one individual can’t possible change anything – but if we recognised that actually each of us can make a difference, if we decide to do something instead of doing nothing, we would see that change is possible. Christianity teaches that things can change; it can be different because God gives us the power to bring about change One morning an old man was walking along the beach and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up on the shore. In the distance he spotted a boy who was gathering up the starfish and one by one was throwing them back into the ocean. He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time. The boy replied, “If these starfish are left out here like this they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon they will all be dead.” The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?” The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It’s sure going to make a lot of difference to this one!” Maybe today you too can make a difference! Get involved in one the different community groups or community project that are in Hoole – one of the newest groups is @NottingHoole according to their twitter account they state that there vision is “to develop, support and enhance the community” I’m sure they would love to welcome some new volunteers!!

Sticky Walnut takes the biscuit The Sticky Walnut has been named Restaurant of the Year in the AA Hospitality Awards. The bistro, on Charles Street, took the accolade at a posh awards do at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. The award citation said: ‘Head chef and owner Gary Usher has worked in many restaurants in the North of England and in London and he and his team now use top notch produce to put together imaginative dishes that do all of the ingredients proud.’

Rail in order to seek their approval for a temporary narrow carriageway for cars and cyclists only and also a footway to be accommodated on their bridge. Approval has now been received from Network Rail for this temporary highway arrangement and the Council will also increase the height of the bridge parapet. Works began on 8th October to construct the temporary road layout across Westminster Road Bridge and this is likely to take two weeks.
