CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett

DNA kits issued to beat Hoole and Newton thieves POLICE are helping to tackle burglaries in Hoole and Newton by offering special DNA marking kits to householders in target areas. There have been a number of burglaries in roads near to the cycleway with canny thieves using the track as a means to escape. So local Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett and the local councillors have joined forces to bring Selecta DNA to the area. PCSO Bartlett noticed that the break-ins were more prevalent in certain roads, so he asked the councillors for Hoole and Newton for help. Cllrs Angie Chidley, Alex Black (Hoole) and Richard Beacham and Gill Watson (Newton) all agreed to donate money from their councillors’ allowance to fund Selecta DNA kits. People in areas such as Sefton Road, Greenbank Road and Mannings Lane are now able to uniquely mark goods in their house with the invisible spray. Each DNA code is unique to each address, so that if thieves break in and take a TV or other electronic items that have been sprayed with Selecta DNA, it makes it very difficult for them to sell them on. If police find the stolen goods they can reunite them with their owners. PCSO Bartlett said: “These kits have been given to a lot of homes and we hope that it will put thieves off because they can’t move them on easily afterwards. Anyone found with property marked with Selecta DNA will be in possession of stolen goods. “Thanks to the local councillors who have helped to fund the Selecta DNA from their allowances.” 14 Tel 01244 350398

Hoole History Corner

COMMUNITY CENTRE

Hoole History and Heritage Society record the celebrations which took place to mark 150 years of the Hoole Community Centre building HOOLE Community Centre buzzed with many fond memories on Saturday 10th October when past pupils of Westminster Rd School visited Hoole History’s exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the school in 1865.

Two former classrooms, now the Community Library and Hobson’s Cafe, were the setting for a collection of historical documents, photographs, school reports, certificates and other memorabilia donated by past pupils and their families.

The land and building for a school “For Girls and Infants” were given by Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, in whose honour Peploe St was later renamed Westminster Rd. At that time there had been increasing concern about the dangers of ignoring the moral well-being of children.

As far back as 1834 a Poor Law Report told Parliament that the government should “...promote the religious and moral education of the working classes.”

with himself as a five year -old, sitting on a rocking horse at the centre of a picture of a mixed class of boys and girls taken in 1936 (opposite).

Included in the documents on display were reports written for Alice Clayton from 1922 – 1925, as well as a couple of her exercise books. (The photo shows Alice’s beautiful handwriting recording a May Day celebration on the Roodee.)

Prior to 1865, Christchurch Newtown Parish had, in 1855, started a National School in Peploe Street in the mission house (Lewis’s Ice Cream today). The 1857 Post Office Directory described it as a school for boys and girls.

In 1867, when the new parish church was built, it became All Saints National School, providing for boys, so the additional school for girls and infants was a welcome addition to provision for the children of Hoole.

In 1903 management of the Westminster Rd School was transferred by the then Duke of Westminster to the control of the Church of England. Hoole History and Heritage has a copy of the handwritten conveyancing document recording this change. Among the visitors eagerly searching photographs for images of their younger selves was Ron Brodhurst of Hoole who is pictured face to face

Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.

READING, WRITING AND ‘RITHMETIC Alice learned in a class of 40 pupils and did lots of work in English, divided into Reading, Composition, Writing and Dictation (lots of this!) as well as English Literature. She also studied History, Geography Drawing and Nature. Reports were made on her “General Intelligence” and “General Neatness” and, in the days long before gender equality, a section of her reports headed FOR GIRLS ONLY records her progress in Needlework, Hygiene and Cookery.

By 1953 the single report entry for Arithmetic in the 1920s had become Arithmetic (Mechanical), Arithmetic (Problems) and Arithmetic (Mental). Handwriting, PT and Games as well as Music and Science had been added to the pupils’ studies

and the section of the report limited to girls had disappeared although Domestic Science and Hygiene still featured.

In the 1960s the subjects studied had hardly changed from the 20s although Spelling and Comprehension now appeared in reports. Personal qualities were still strongly encouraged, evidenced by a Certificate of Merit on display awarded to Roger Moore in 1966 for “Politeness and Courtesy”.

Westminster Rd School closed in 1981 and, after a brief spell as part of the then Chester College, through the work of the Hoole Area Residents’ Association it became our Community Centre, thus continuing to play a central role in the life of Hoole.

Hoole treasure trail returns THE Hoolisaurus trail may be a distant memory but in Hoole this autumn, the trail has returned. The Hooligator treasure trail, organised by Hoole Church of England Primary School PTA, in conjunction with local Hoole business and the Hoole Christmas lights committee, has seen alligators that have been decorated by the primary school children placed in various shops. Following on from previous years’ trail success, the children were provided with a Hooligator trail map and encouraged, with the help of their parents, to visit as many businesses in Hoole as possible and note which alligator is in which business. The completed trail maps will then be entered into a draw and the lucky winner will help to turn on the Christmas lights on Saturday 14th November. Headteacher Cheryl Bullen said: “I am delighted that we can continue to strengthen our school links with the local community through the fun of this trail”.

Hoole needs public’s help to be crowned Britain’s best high street HOOLE needs your votes in the national competition to find Britain’s best high street. Two weeks into the six-week public voting period, a rankings release by the Great British High Street Competition has revealed that in the local centre category, Hoole high street is riding high in first place. But with four weeks to go until voting closes, that could all change. Winners in each of the seven categories get a share of a prize pot worth £80,000 which includes expert training and tailor-made tips from Google’s training taskforce for one hundred of their shops, bars and restaurants. With the public vote making up 50% of final decision, the team behind Hoole high street are urging local people to get behind their bid for glory. Sue Mason, who is part of the Hoole campaign, said: “Over the past year we’ve made every effort to make Hoole a better place to work, shop and socialise. “That’s why we are delighted that that Specialist in all aspects of domestic & commercial groundworks we’ve been recognised as one of the top 3 high streets in the local centre category and one of the best in the country. “But to help us get over the line and be ranked Britain’s best, we need local people to get online and get voting.” ajleadsom@hotmail.co.uk Free Estimates. Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft

I HAVE delusions of grandeur. It’s only now, sat in a late 17th century hall in the Lake District, hiding from the in-laws under an ornately carved walnut four poster, that I can admit there is a certain charm to my current situation. It’s not their gaff. It’s a ‘pet friendly’ holiday let near Grange-over-Sands and I’ve been here a week (in Grange-over-Sands - not under the bed). It’s stunning. More importantly, it’s silent. Apart from the dumbed down baby voices of grown adults, the jealous barking of the family dog and then the reprimanding squawking simultaneously ordering him to “get on your bed,” “get under the table,” “get out” and “sit down,” this place is a welcome escape from my newly noise infested Notting Hoole neighbourhood. Shortly before we came away, the noises that usually eased me to sleep, along with the occasional odd drunk couple falling down the curbs on their way back from the Suburbs, were accompanied by a new set of neighbours who I wrongly tarred with the student brush.

I was lured into a false sense of security when I heard they had knocked on some of the neighbours doors to explain that they had just moved in and were having a few friends over for a house warming party and if the noise got too much, we could simply ask them to turn it down. Along with the rest of my neighbours (and I am assuming this as the neighbours will contort into positions only seen in travelling circuses in attempts to exit their houses and climb into to their cars without having to make eye contact with each other) we all sat in our kitchens clinging to our best crockery while our houses 38 Tel 01244350398

shook trying to consul ourselves that it was just one night - just one party - they did come and explain if it got too loud they’d turn it down so they can’t be all that bad - it’s a one off - we were young(er) once - let them have some fun. But it’s not been a one off. Since the elderly man at number seven wandered up the street collecting the empty beer cans and bottles and politely placed them on their doorstep to save them having to pull on their slippers and doing it themselves (which I am most certain they intended to do), I’ve not found myself wrapped around an Emma Bridgewater on the kitchen floor but I have found myself rewinding the TV to see what that pivotal plot twist was as the first time the dying words were spluttered, they were drowned out by the symphony of car door slamming and shrieking voices from further up the street.

BUMPER TO BUMPER

It’s those kind of shrieks that are slightly inhuman but sadly not high pitched enough that only a dog can hear. And it is one of those cars that may look like any normal red Nissan Micra but actually has an extra 27 doors cleverly concealed about its bodywork - all of which need to be slammed in such a way that even Fatima Whitbread would struggle to achieve. It’s also one of those cars that has separation issues. It can’t just park anywhere, it has to be tucked up nice and close to your bumper for safety. So close that you have to move your own car forward to open your boot. So close that you’re checking your exhaust for lipstick! I’ve not seen a single Nissan Micra here. There

www.hooleroundabout.com

are a few tractors and a 4x4 that’s never seen its four wheel drive function before, parked over at the gatehouse.

The 4x4 probably breathed a diesel infused sigh of relief when it left the M6 and saw the hills beyond. The only hills it had encountered until now was the speed humps on the drive to the boys’ pre-school. They’d not brought the boys. I assume they’ve left them with the nanny but they still have the baby on board sticker so they can park as close to the co-op as possible. I wonder how long it took for their horror to dissolve when they discovered the nearest Waitrose was over 26 miles away? I admit I tossed my Waitrose bag around early as I got out of the car and pretended to look for my keys. The chink of the Co-op’s own branded brews hidden inside gained a longing glance. They waved back and could see her mouth to him in desperation ‘where...’ and I envisaged them driving around that night in search of free Wifi to see if they’d missed one on their store locator app.

MATING RITUAL

So, here I am, under the bed with a limited supply of Kendal mint cake, trying not to draw attention to myself -hoping that the new baby is enough to divert their attention from me absence - and I’m pining for my own bed. I can’t squeeze under the Ikea frame like I can here but the noise of the new neighbour’s mating ritual echoing up the street like two feral cats in a Nicky Minaj karaoke competition is a little less annoying than grown-ups talking to each other like Tellytubbies.

There’s a cry from downstairs that we’re going to the chippy. It’s not very Jane Eyre and the table in the dining room is more befitting a full on banquet, or at least a family bucket from KFC and I wondered, if I was here alone, surrounded by all this grandeur and scenery and these bumps in the night what would I do for tea? Probably steal the staff’s 4x4 and head back to the Hollows in NottingHoole. There’s no place like home...

WHAT IS FAIRNESS?

Look up....

BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER

I DON’T know if you have ever said this “life sometimes is just not fair” I know I have! Situations and circumstances happen within the cause of life that really do seem unfair and at times pretty random. I sometimes wonder to myself why do bad things happen to good people? Why is it that for some individuals the course of life seems to be a very rocky path and for others ‘everything they touch turns to gold?’ During the summer I read the auto biography of Dawn French, I really enjoy reading about other peoples lives and what strikes me time and time again, and it happened in the life of Dawn French is that an opportunity comes along in life where they seem to be in the right place at the right time and then they make a choice to embrace this opportunity.

Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 27 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

For many this choice leads them on a road to some degree of success with work and life. Looking from the outside this can seem unfair? Why do some people lives break out from what life throws at them whilst others never seem to move on from particular difficult situations and circumstances. This got me thinking about the question, “what is fairness?” Most of us would agree it involves issues of equality, impartiality, proportionality, openness and due process. Most would agree that it is unfair to handle similar matters inconsistently. Most would agree that it is unfair to impose punishment that is not commensurate with the offence. The basic concept seems simple, even intuitive, yet applying it in daily life can be surprisingly difficult. Even a superficial reading of the news and events over the past few weeks highlights many examples of unfairness and injustice; an accident at an air show that kills 7 people who just happen to be driving on a nearby road, the effects of Western global warming that causes flooding and droughts in third world countries Bangladesh; the loss of jobs in a car factory which will devastate the local economy; the refugee crisis in Europe and wars in Syria; the sudden death of a family member from a heart attack. How do we handle and deal with life when it seems at time so unfair. Fairness is one of the 6 pillars of character and together with trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring, and citizenship these are the values that form the basis for forming good character in a person. Fairness is described with phrases such as Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be openminded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly. Our character will always come to the fore whenever we are faced with a crisis or we have to deal with a situation of unfairness. One way to prepare is to make sure we make personal choice sand decision that treat others with fairness – we all need to take time out to consider our choices and decisions and their consequences. For me my faith is something I can draw upon to give me strength, like all of us I can sometimes wonder, “why did God let this happen?” and “where was God in that moment?” Faith enables me to see that God does care and he wants to draw near to us so we can begin to make sense of life and to understand I am not subject to fate and its random acts.

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam.
