Parents want to ‘take Bear everywhere’ The family of a boy who has complex medical needs and disabilities are hoping to raise £20,000 so he can get out and about more. So far, a total of £13,000 has been pledged for Joseph Randles-Blyth so that his parents can buy a customised motorhome which has a hoist and disabled toilet to allow them to take him on trips away from the family home in Hoole. Parents Jayne and Dave have been amazed at the generosity of local people after setting up a Justgiving page called ‘Take Bear Everywhere’ for Joseph, whom they nickname ‘Bear’. They said: “Our son has complex medical needs, a life limiting condition and complex disabilities (total body involvement cerebral palsy GMFCS 5, Cystic Fibrosis, 75% lateralised dislocated hip, Epilepsy and a number of other complex medical conditions and disabilities) which mean that we are unable to take Bear out and about in the world as much as we would like due to his medical needs and disabilities. To achieve any outing away from home Bear requires a hoist, changing table and lots of supplies. Due to Bears complex disabilities a standard Disabled toilet does not have the equipment that Bear requires. “It is our dream for Bear to enjoy a comfortable and pain free life without limitations.” They want to raise enough cash to buy a pre-owned motor home/camper style van and convert it with the specialist equipment Bear requires to be able to leave the house even for short periods of time. The parents added: “We would love to take Bear everywhere and anywhere with no limitations. Bear loves being out and about and spending time with family and friends, having days out (big and small) and this has become increasing difficult to achieve.” They have set up a Facebook page called ‘Take Bear Everywhere’ and a Twitter account of the same name. Chester Family History Group Our next meeting is on Thursday 30th November - A Seasonal Miscellany featuring a quiz, family history oddities and seasonal refreshments. Members and non-members very welcome - the meeting starts at 7.30pm and there will be a small charge at the door. We meet at the Church Hall at All Saints Church, 2 Vicarage Road, Hoole, Chester CH2 3HZ. Chester Group host a help desk on a Tuesday and Friday at Chester History and Heritage Centre, St Michael’s Church, Bridge Street, Chester, 10am - 12noon and 1pm - 4pm. We also have a help desk at Chester Library at Storyhouse on Tuesday mornings between 10 and 12noon. New Co-op opens The new Co-op store on Hoole Road is due to open on Thursday 26th October following a £750,000 investment. The existing store in Walker Street, will be closed, with business transferred to the new store which is on the site of the old Elms GP surgery.

Big turn-out for Hoole’s autumn event The fair weather in late September helped to bring good crowds to the Hoole Autumn Street Festival. The format has proved so popular, the organisers, the Notting Hoole group, decided to expand the festival with stalls and displays at the car park to add to the packed Faulker Street and Charles Street. They are hoping that the Christmas lights event on 19th November will be even more successful.

Hoole soldier who died in WWI is honoured in ceremony In the September issue we covered the centenary of the death of Private James Edward Bowe. To mark the anniversary, members of his family met at the Hoole War Memorial on 22nd September to lay a regimental wreath in his honour. Present were his nephew, Ted Bowe, and his great nephews, David and John Nickless and Martyn Harris. David Goodwin, Minister at Hamilton Street Methodist Church, led the commemoration. Members of the wider Hoole ‘family’, including Cllr Angie Chidley and Hoole History and Heritage Society secretary Ruth Ludgate helped to provide valuable information about Private Bowe’s military career, were in attendance. A visitor from New Zealand, staying in Hoole on the day, noticed the service taking place at the Memorial on Hoole Road. Her relative, serving with the New Zealand Army was killed in action in November 1917, and she stopped to share her story with John and his family.’

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
Don’t park on Zig Zags – parents warned ‘Irresponsible’ parents are putting lives at risk by parking on the zig zags outside Hoole Primary School. That’s the view of PCSO Keith Bartlett who says there will now be a zero tolerance policy from now on, with drivers who are caught given a fine and points on the licence. He said: “Last week I saw four cars parked there when the parents were dropping their children off at school. “It’s irresponsible and is a danger to children. The message to parents is: if you can’t park outside the school, go further up the road and walk.” l Patrols are being stepped up after youths were found inside a derelict building on Hoole’s Alexandra Park. It is believed that they have been hanging around in the building, which is between the bowling green and the children’s play area. PCSO Keith Bartlett said: “If anyone sees young people going into the building, they should call the police. The building isn’t safe.” l Drivers turning right off the Boughton railway bridge onto Lightfoot Street have been cutting right across the mini-roundabout. Local people living in Westminster Road contacted PCSO Keith Bartlett after witnessing a number of close shaves by motorists refusing to take the long way round the roundabout which is at the bottom of the railway bridge. So, he contacted the local council who have since repainted the roundabout to make it clearer to motorists.
Christmas lights switch-on date There is a new twist to the Hoole Christmas Lights event this year. The organisers are putting on a Christmas market before the event, with many local stalls, street food and open mic on the stage. This year it takes place on Sunday 19th November, with the market running from 11am and the lights switched on at 6pm. Santa will be in attendance in the evening when the lights go on in Faulkner Street and Charles Street.

LIFE’S NOT FAIR BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
I don’t know if you have ever said this “life sometimes is just not fair” I know I have! Situations and circumstances happen within the cause of life that really do seem unfair and at times pretty random. I sometimes wonder to myself why do bad things happen to good people? Why is it that for some individuals the course of life seems to be a very rocky path and for others ‘everything they touch turns to gold?’ During the summer I read the auto biography of Dawn French, I really enjoy reading about other peoples lives and what strikes me time and time again, and it happened in the life of Dawn French is that an opportunity comes along in life where they seem to be in the right place at the right time and then they make a choice to embrace this opportunity. For many this choice leads them on a road to some degree of success with work and life. Looking from the outside this can seem unfair? Why do some people lives break out from what life throws at them whilst others never seem to move on from particular difficult situations and circumstances. This got me thinking about the question, “what is fairness?” Most of us would agree it involves issues of equality,
28 Tel 01244350398
impartiality, proportionality, openness and due process. Most would agree that it is unfair to handle similar matters inconsistently. Most would agree that it is unfair to impose punishment that is not commensurate with the offence. The basic concept seems simple, even intuitive, yet applying it in daily life can be surprisingly difficult. Even a superficial reading of the news and events over the past few weeks highlights many examples of unfairness and injustice; an accident a motorway that kills 7 people who just happen to be driving at the same time as a lorry driver who fell asleep at the wheel; the effects of Western global warming that causes flooding and droughts in third world countries Bangladesh; the loss of jobs in a car factory which will devastate the local economy; the refugee crisis in Europe and wars in Syria; the sudden death of a family member from a heart attack. How do we handle and deal with life when it seems at time so unfair. Fairness is one of the 6 pillars of character and together with trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, caring, and citizenship these are the values that form the basis for forming good character in a person. Fairness is described with phrases such as Play by the rules • Take turns and share • Be open-minded; listen to

others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly. Our character will always come to the fore whenever we are faced with a crisis or we have to deal with a situation of unfairness. One way to prepare is to make sure we make personal choice sand decision that treat others with fairness – we all need to take time out to consider our choices and decisions and their consequences. For me my faith is something I can draw upon to give me strength, like all of us I can sometimes wonder, “why did God let this happen?” and “where was God in that moment?” For me the faith I have in God as a good good Father enables me to appreciate and see that God does care and he wants to draw near to us so we can begin to make sense of life and to understand I am not subject to fate and its random acts.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
FLAMING NOVEMBER COLOUR With the flowers coming to an end for the year, it is time to appreciate the leaves changing colour to yellow, orange and red and berries on shrubs. In sheltered areas where Acers can thrive in cool damp soil, their leaf colour can be stunning in autumn. I have an Acer palmatum Orange Dream, in a pot. In spring the foliage is lime green but in autumn the leaves are edged with orange red than gradually deepen over the days. If you have space for a large tree in the garden and want autumn colour then try a Liquidamber. Some are huge trees but Liquidamber orientalis will grow slowly to 6m tall with yellow and orange foliage in autumn. Plant well away from buildings, at least the ultimate height away, to prevent tree root damage to structures. Last month I suggested a striking grass, Miscanthus sinensis Flamingo for autumn colour. As the weather cools, this grass takes on orange reddish hues as can be seen from the photo. Berries do well at keeping colour going on into winter and this year is superb. Look around as you walk to the shops and you are likely to see gleaming Pyracantha shrubs loaded with berries
in red, orange and yellow. Another desirable plant is Callicarpa or Beauty Berry. The variety Profusion is best for berries which are clusters of purple dotted up the stems. Needs a moisture retentive soil in sun or light shade and berries best after a hot summer. This year Berberis are berrying well with clusters of scarlet berries which make a stunning contrast on the purple leaved varieties. As leaves fall, and if you have space for a leaf compost heap, clear them up and put them in their own heap or damp into plastic bin liners, preferably with grass cuttings to help them rot down. Leaves and grass make the most delicious compost (from the plants point of view!) which is usually weed free. Dig out any vegetables that have finished for the season and add a layer, 3ins deep, of well rotted manure onto the top of the bed to be taken down into the soil over winter. Make sure you have cleared all leaves from around roses and cut off any that show signs of disease. These spore based moulds stay in the soil ready to emerge in the next season so keeping the area clear is important. Finally, plant tulip bulbs, your last chance for a display next year!

Hayley’s health and fitness
Are you making your child fat? DID you know that 1 in 3 children aged between 6-9 years are obese? Did you know that food/ eating habits in young children are what can contribute to them being overweight as an adult. There are several factors in today’s society that contribute to a childhood obesity, simply things such as; Larger portioned foods, snacks between meals, sugary drinks, lack of activity, skipping breakfast, bad habits observed by parents the list goes on. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BREAK THIS CYCLE? You may think what’s a few treats they are children that’s what kids do, eat sweets, ice cream etc. However you could be contributing to their risks of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, reduced mobility, low self-esteem and depression plus many more negative consequences. The fact is when a child is young they only know what they are taught and see on a daily basis, if they think having full fat coke for breakfast and take-aways of an evening is the norm, they are more likely to continue this when they get older. If you’re guilty of this it’s not too late to change habits and you being a good role model is the first place to start. If your child is a fussy eater, try a variety of foods and offer lots of praise and encouragement for trying something they wouldn’t usually have. Sit down with them at meal times and show them that you eat the new foods too and tell them how good for you they are. Children need to try foods on more than one occasion, they might not like it the first time but keep trying, try adding different sauces, or mix it in with something they do like. Be sure to make a big fuss if they do finish or even try a new food. It’s important they stay active, how many children do you see as soon as they get home from school are straight on the computer/ social media. Limit these times and get the whole family out and about. These may sound
32 Tel 01244350398
like simple tasks but they can make a huge difference. A child should be physically active 60 mins of the day! It’s important also not to use food as a reward, “oh well done honey you did your homework, here’s a cream cake!” use sticker charts, praise and days out to reinforce good behaviour. You often hear lots of mums saying “Give him this it will keep her quiet!” yes you might get two minutes peace while they finish off a bag of sweets. But you will have more grief when your child needs teeth removing due to tooth decay! Keep snacks to savoury treats, cheese, crackers, veggie sticks for example. Keep in mind of the effects in later life, cut of sugary snacks, encourage good eating habits and show them good life skills by being a good role model. It’s never too late to make changes! Hoole History Corner
The story of Hoole greengrocer Thomas Baldwin, as told by Ralph Earlam, from the H The descendants of Thomas Baldwin have provided Hoole History & Heritage Society with some family photographs, which have prompted some local research. The author remembers his mother being served with vegetables by Thomas, who would have been in his 80’s, and the photograph of him and his wife confirm the memory. The author also delivered milk to his son, John Miles Baldwin, a painter and decorator at his shop at 21 Charles Street and remembers being paid by him. Thomas Baldwin was born in 1859 in Burton, Westmoreland, his parents being Henry, who was a molecatcher and Margaret. He had an elder sister, Mary who married a Chester man, Edward J. Felstead. The 1881 Census shows Thomas staying with them at 18 Charlotte Street. He was 22 years old and his occupation was a tailor. It was here that he met Elizabeth Riley who would become his wife. Later Census returns show her as being born in Hoole, but she was actually born in Holt, Denbighshire, the 1861 Census shows her as the daughter of Leonard Reilly, an agricultural labourer who came from Ireland; he was married to Mary, a girl from Holt. The 1881 Census shows that Leonard Riley (spelling of surname changed) had moved to No.66 (probably now 56) Faulkner Street where he was a cow keeper. At that time the population of Hoole was expanding rapidly bringing with it a demand for fresh milk; a number of residents kept cows which they raised on the field of Cow Pastures, which was behind the early houses of Faulkner and Law Street. Leonard Riley’s wife no longer appears but Elizabeth aged 24 is listed as a dressmaker. Thomas and Elizabeth (pictured) were married in 1882 and they set up a greengrocery business at No.8 Charles Street. This was a wise move because it appears that there wasn’t another one in Hoole. Previously the shop in 1871 had been run by a butcher and in 1881 it was occupied by a printer and smallware dealer.
They had 8 children and the 1911 Census includes a son John Miles, 17, as an apprentice painter and decorator. A ‘Jno Baldwin’ (presumably John Miles) appears in the admissions register of All Saints School in 1903. When World War 1 started in 1914 the sons were enlisted and the following information has been found about John Miles: His service record appears not to have survived but it has been established that he served overseas and was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. This was initially as Private 37391 with the South Wales Borderers, going overseas at some point after 1 January 1916. The Battalion that he was with cannot be identified, but in the photograph he is wearing the cap badge of the South Wales Borderers. At some point between October 1917 and January 1918 he transferred to the Labour Corps as Private 417569, meaning he was likely medically downgraded either through illness, accident or wounds received. For some if not all his time with the Labour Corps he was with 911 Area Employment Company, and would have been involved in a variety of non-combat duties. They were part of the 2nd Army, which was re-designated from March 1918. From then until November 1918 they were involved in 19 separate battles. After the War the greengrocery business continued in Charles Street; Elizabeth died in 1924 but Thomas (for some reason known as ‘Skinner’ Baldwin) continued to run the shop until his death in 1949. His daughter Miss Elizabeth Baldwin continued the business before she died in 1960. The premises

THOMAS BALDWIN (1859 – 1949) Greengrocer in Charles Street for over 70 years
the Hoole History and Heritage Society then became a paint shop run for several years by W. Caldwell. After serving during the War, John Miles resumed his career as a painter and decorator. A 1933 Directory showing that he was living at No.21 Charles Street, perhaps over the shop run by Mr. C. Hutchings, described as a paper hanger and decorator; as it would appear that John Miles eventually took over the business. After he retired in 1980, the shop became a laundromat. It is now a carpet shop. The final photograph supplied by the family shows Thomas Baldwin delivering fruit & veg from his horse and cart in Vicarage Road. One caption says that it is of him and his son, Charlie which caused great confusion because there is no trace of a son called Charlie. Further investigation revealed that the boy was actually John Miles and it was the horse that was called ‘Charlie’. Information on World War I service records provided by Dave Rees.
l This article is already available on HH&HS website, with articles will be updated as new information comes to light hoolehistorysoc.btck.co.uk/PeopleofHoole/ ThomasBaldwin.
The next meeting of HH&HS is on Tuesday 21st November when Dave Rees will be giving a presentation on Hoole’s WW1 Hospitals. He will be looking at the three hospitals in operation in Hoole during the First World War - Hoole Bank House, Hoole House and Chester War Hospital (otherwise the Workhouse/ City Hospital); the staff who worked there; stories of families connected to the buildings during the War; and other individuals with a Hoole connection who supported the medical services during the War.

Teresa seeks help for crash victim cousin A teacher from Hoole has been busy raising funds to support her cousin who suffered terrible injuries in a road crash in Mexico. Teresa Fajardo was devastated when she learnt that her cousin Eduardo Fajardo had his leg amputated and suffered bad facial injuries after being hit by a car. She has already raised nearly £2,000 through jumble sales and coffee mornings, as well as receiving help from Hoole businesses to help contribute to the cost of permanent dentures to replace the five teeth he lost in the accident. Now, Teresa wants to raise more to help buy the 22-year-old a prosthetic leg in time for Christmas. Eduardo wrote a thank you letter to people in this area who have helped him. It read: “I would like to thank with all my heart everyone who
has helped towards my cause. What a huge support, I did not expect it!” Teresa, who is a member of Chester Road Runners, has started a crowdfunding page www.crowdfunder.co.uk/eduardo1 to help towards the £4,500 cost of the prosthetic limb. She said: “Eduardo is doing really well, he’s strong in his mind and realises he is lucky to be alive. Let’s make his life better by helping him walk as normally as he will ever be able to with an artificial leg, rather than using crutches for years to come.” Anyone who would like to donate prizes or organise a fundraising event can contact Teresa by email at caramba3.tf@ gmail.com or visit www.crowd funder.co.uk/eduardo1
