Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Hoole shortlisted for GB High Street awards The Notting Hoole team are so excited and proud to announce that Hoole has been shortlisted for the 2016 Great British High Street awards in the Local Centre category. After winning ‘Best Newcomer’ in last year’s competition, Hoole has its sights set on an even bigger win this year. Chairwoman of Notting Hoole (the team behind the entry) Sue Mason said: “We won £5000 for the community last year, and it is fantastic to have so much support from the local residents and businesses this year too. “It’s already an exciting time for Hoole after the massive success of the Autumn Street Festival and the run up to the Christmas Lights Switch On event, and this is the icing on the cake.” ‘It’s fantastic news that we’ve been shortlisted’, added Linda Hobbs, self-confessed Hoolster and Secretary of Notting Hoole, ‘but now the really hard work begins. We need the continued support of the community to vote every day on the Great British High Street Award website remember “Hoole Needs You!” Another win this year helps Hoole survive the endemic decline of the traditional High Street and protects the area we all love.’ For details on how to vote go to http://thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk/high-street-of-the-yearaward. Schools ‘on board’ with Somerville’s For Sale sign art competition Somerville’s Estate Agents have teamed up with the Notting HolleTeam to offer pupils in local schools the chance to have their artwork displayed on their ‘For Sale’ boards in the Hoole area and win book tokens for their school. The Hoole Life Art Competition aims to encourage young people, aged 4 to 11 years old who live in Hoole or attend school in the local area, to have fun and be creative with their ideas for a Somerville’s arty ‘For Sale’ board which usually feature the works of famous artists such as Van Gogh and Klimt. The brief is to draw or paint a picture showing what they love about living in or visiting Hoole. A shortlist of 12 pictures will be drawn up from the entries that the judging team consider to be the most original, creative and well executed and these will be displayed at the Notting Hoole Christmas Lights Switch On event on 19th November 2016. First, second and third prize winners will be selected from the shortlist, winning book tokens for their school. The 1st prize winner’s picture will be framed courtesy of Art At A41 and will be made into a Somerville’s arty ‘For Sale’ board and displayed around Hoole throughout 2017. During that year Somerville’s are sponsoring Hoole Christmas lights and for each winning board that is put up, they will donate £5 to the Christmas Lights fund. The local schools have been keen to encourage their pupils to take part and have distributed the entry forms among their classes. “We are all getting excited seeing the entries come in,” says Somerville’s Director, Annie Somerville. “It’s so great to see how creative the children are. Hoole is such a lively and vibrant place and this has inspired the children to paint some very good pictures!” For further details on the Hoole Life Art Competition, please pick up a leaflet and entry form from Somerville’s Estate Agents, 24a Charles Street, Hoole, Chester CH2 3AZ. Closing date for entries is Friday 11th November 2016. Hoole Roundabout November 2016 19
GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
Leaf colour in November
NOVEMBER can be a drab, dark month with the warmth of autumn behind us but it is the best month for leaf colour. Visit some of the large gardens open to the public or go to a local park to see the flame colours of trees, just before the leaves fall. Shelter and well drained soil can support a lovely Acer especially if grown near larger trees. The red colour of the one in the photograph will shine out in late autumn. The yellow berries of Pyracantha Soleil d’Or, has yellow berries in autumn and winter. The berries are not eaten by birds until later in the winter. It has white flowers in spring, loved by bees and is good as a hedging plant. It has very sharp spines abut 2cm long
that will pierce leather gloves so be cautious when planting or pruning! If you have a sheltered garden with well drained soil that does not get much hard frost why not consider a Pittosporum, an evergreen shrub with attractive foliage. There are many varieties but all will take cutting back to keep them to shape and size. The one pictured is Pittosporum tenuifolium Garnettii with dark stems and green and cream leaves. Jobs to do around the garden include finishing planting tulip bulbs which can go in later than daffodils. Plant in well drained soil in sun for best effect and expect to replant in subsequent years as the bulbs are not as vigorous as in their first year.
Put fallen leaves in a separate compost bin or put in a bin liner to rot down. One of my clients has superb compost made from leaves and grass cuttings mixed. They mow the lawn in autumn which cuts the leaves up and the grass clippings help them rot down fast. Prune any roses that have finished flowering to take off the top growth. Formative pruning of bush roses can be done in early March. Climbing and rambling roses can be pruned now for next year – a prickly job! Cut off all the little spindly stems. Then look for long strong new growth to tie in, preferably horizontally so that the stem sends up lots of new flowering growth along its length. Cut out old brown wood.

Some musings about Hoole with Andy Medcraft
What are those noises coming from next door?
I’d fallen out of love with our little house in Hoole long before the inlaws invaded. We’d decamped to the guest room while they took ours. The irony is not lost on me. While most tried to avoid the obvious signs of our landlord’s neglect to fix the gaping hole in our kitchen ceiling, repair the shower that had burst a pipe somewhere deep within the adjoining wall or replace the boiler that has died and made more comebacks than Cher, the in-laws were less sympathetic to our situation and were quick to point out how unnecessarily steep our stairs were, how uncomfortably big the lampshade appeared to be in “their” bedroom and how disappointing it was that the house was devoid of shoehorns or talcum powder.
“What’s that noise?” asked the motherin-law. “Our neighbours,” I responded as the laughter that erupted next door rattled the array of trinkets that had been unpacked and now adorned every available flat surface. The fireplace was now an array of slippers, tablets, socks, glasses, phones, chargers, handbags, keys, coins, receipts and a dessert spoon that now served as a make-shift shoehorn. We’d spent the week before polishing and vacuuming the house in anticipation of their visit and now our efforts where hidden under a thick layer of debris. Another laugh, forced and theatrical boomed through the wall. The spoon clattered to the floor. I ‘d wondered if our neighbours were hard of hearing and that’s why they were so loud. I used to work for a company back down south run by
a plummy woman called Annie with a very shouty voice. She never had anything interesting to say but she still said it loud enough for everybody within a mile radius to hear. Annie employed an elderly lady called Pearl to assist with ad hoc duties and she’d shout orders at her all day. Pearl took the shouting as a sign that Annie herself had hearing difficulties and therefore responded at equal volume. The pair would stand shoulder to shoulder and bark at each other like a pair of rabid terriers.
to acknowledge what was happening outside, their faces reddened and I sat back in my chair and grinned.
The deaf neighbour theory replaced the earlier misconception that they were just inconsiderate and paid little attention to the natural ebb and flow of the neighbourhood. The booming voices, the door slamming, the car stereo at stupid o’clock all contributing to an annoyance that only I seemed to feel. And now my annoyance is simply that I am old. I’ve become the grumpy old man next door.
Welcome to Hoole - the real Hoole. Not this Notting Hoole ladies that lunch Hoole but this fly tipping in Phillip Street Hoole. This nitty-gritty Hoole that sits beyond its beautiful High Street. Welcome to the terraces where real people live. Where charity muggers flock like scavenging birds to prey upon us every month or so. Where the neighbours wake you in the night with their door slamming. Where you struggle to park outside your own house. Where you’re told at 6.30am that your cologne smells nice. Where people are kind enough to take in parcels when you’re not home. Where the smoke and mirrors of all that entices people into our neighbourhood begs the question: who wants the truth when you can have something beautiful? I do! I find it refreshing that it’s not all a picture postcard. It’s more than pretentious wine bars and fancy restaurants.
And then it all just faded away that balmy night we sat at the table playing Rummikub, the in-laws still in tow. The kitchen door was open to let in the breeze and suddenly there was screaming from out in the yard. It took only a second to realise that it was coming from one of the adjacent houses and that the screams were of pleasure rather than pain. They were loud and female and within only a few minutes she had found religion. Her calling out to God went on and on, louder and louder. Although it was hysterical, sat there with them, all eyes fixed on the little white Rummikub tiles scattered about the table, desperate not
The screaming has become a semi regular thing now. The humour was numbed slightly when we realised only her voice ever calls for that “celestial high.” When she repeats that monologue word for word at 3.30pm on a Thursday afternoon it’s inappropriate but apparent it’s simply a particularly well loved scene rather than a fellow ‘Hooligan’ getting frisky with a mime artist.
GRUMPY OLD MAN
The clutter and debris has cleared and we are now the proud owners of an extendible stainless steel shoehorn. A ‘thank you for letting us stay’ present and certainly not an ‘at least we know you’ve got one next time we visit’ gift.

REMEMBRANCE BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER This month I am attending a birthday celebration of a very good friend of ours; Sue and I have known this person for over 10 years, this means we have lots of shared memories, including some very happy ones and some equally as sad. We were looking through some photo albums which recorded some of these events through some specific photographs at christenings, weddings, holidays and Christmas times. We had great fun looking through old photos and it certainly Andy Glover has lived in stirred up lots of memories as we remembered the stories that lay behind each Hoole with his wife Sue of the photos. To be able to remember is wonderful; the brain’s ability to store, retain and recall information creates memories. As we get older memories become more important to us, remembering our childhood, remembering loved ones who have passed away and remembering those special occassions we celebrate within life. Of course not all memories are happy ones, one of the amazing dimensions of remembering is that emotions are attched to our memories, so when we remember someone or some event we encounter afreash the emotions that belong to that memory.
for 27 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
November is a month for remembering and as a nation we remember 2 specific things: Remember remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason Should ever be forgot... Words of “Remember Remember” refer to Guy Fawkes with origins in 17th century English history. On the 5th November 1605 Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several dozen barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried as a traitor with his co-conspirators for plotting against the government. Fawkes was sentenced to death and the form of the execution was one of the most horrendous ever practised (hung, drawn and quartered) which reflected the serious nature of the crime of treason. The following year in 1606 it became an annual custom for the King and Parliament to commission a sermon to commemorate the event. This practice, together with the nursery rhyme, ensured that this crime would never be forgotten! Then on Remembrance Day, the 11th November, this day chosen because it was the day that World War One ended in 1918, when the armistice was signed in Northern France, at 5am. Six hours later, the fighting stopped, and to commemorate this there is a two-minute silence in the UK at 11am. This year is a particularly special occasion as it is 100 years since the Battle of the Somme, this battle took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the River Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the Allies and was the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front. More than one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. The nearest Sunday to the 11th is called Remembrance Sunday, when church services are held in honour of those involved in wars, and wreaths are laid on the memorials, which have a place in every town. A poem called ‘For the Fallen’ is often read aloud on the occasion; the most famous stanza of which reads: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. I don’t know if you’ve ever given any thought to the fact that God remembers. God is omniscient, by definition. That means He knows everything there is to know. He knows everything that has happened in the past. He knows what is happening at present. And He knows what will happen in the future. This means that all we have done, good and bad, are all known to Him. He has perfect memory of each and every thing including the wrong that we’ve committed. When we remember some memories we will have feelings of regret and remorse, sometimes we would wish we could change something that was said or done by us or to us. By experiencing God’s forgiveness we can ‘move on’ from these feelings. God does not mysteriously and suddenly “forget” all the bad and wrong things but because of the death of Jesus he chooses to remember them no more – this is the hope of the Christian faith, forgiveness from God via the experience of knowing Jesus enables us to forgive and be forgiven so that we can be free from the effects of some of the bad memories that we so easily remember and become entrapped within the emotions of these memories.

CRIME UPDATE with Police Community Support Officer Keith Bartlett
TRICK OR TREAT WARNING PCSO Keith Bartlett is asking parents to keep an eye on their children if they intend to go out ‘trick or treating’ this Hallowe’en. The 31st October is always a busy night for the police with groups 14 going around in scary costumes, sometimes throwing eggs at buildings. PCSO Bartlett said: “I’d advise children to go out with an adult, and definitely not alone in the dark. It’s best to have safety in numbers.” A number of posters have been given out to homes and businesses which can be displayed, indicating whether the homeowner is willing to take part in trick or treat. Shops have also been warned against selling eggs and flour to young people in the run-up to Hallowe’en. l You can contact the police on the non-emergency number 101.

Autumnal sun shines The Hoole Autumn Festival has been hailed as a huge success.
“After the Hoole May Day Festival we knew we had a lot to live up to with our next event, but The Hoole Autumn Festival exceeded everyone’s expectations,” said Sue Mason, chairwoman of Notting Hoole, the volunteer group behind the event. The sun shone on Charles Street and Faulkner Street as crowds danced to live bands, buskers and a DJ, ate and drank from wonderful stalls selling cuisine from mourned the world, and browsed the arts and crafts stalls. Many of the resident businesses also opened their doors to join in the Sunday afternoon fun. The event was a huge success for all the stallholders and the businesses who opened, giving the area a tremendous boost, at a time when Hoole is bidding for Great British High Street of the Year, having won the Best Newcomer category last year.
es on Hoole festival As well as all the festival fun going on in the High Street, there was also plenty going on in the community centre children’s activities, sports and circus skills, music and even an apple press to put those windfalls to good use. There really was something for everyone at this fantastic festival. Linda Hobbs, secretary of the team and Hoole born and bred said: “Although the event took months of hard work to organise, it was all well worth it on the day. We are so proud of Hoole and we know that whatever we organise, the Hoole residents will get behind us and support us 100%. The area is lively, vibrant and friendly, and we love bringing that out at events like this.” Are the Notting Hoole team taking a well-earned break now? “Of course not!” laughs Sue, “We are busy working on the Hoole Christmas Lights Switch On which will take place on Saturday 19th November and we hope to see you all there!”
