COMMUNITY SPIRIT

IT’S often said these days that neighbours don’t speak to each other as we did in the old days. This certainly isn’t true in Elmwood Avenue and Oaklea Avenue where big efforts are being made to engender a community spirit, which surfaced in a sunflower competition. In this month’s edition we have clubs news, Hoole History, gardening, thought for the month with Andy Glover, financial column, community listings and much more.

Away to Sea... A luxurious cruise means many things to many people but we feel that Silversea’s small ship cruises personify the true meaning of comfort. With just over 300 suites on their largest ships, some of the most expansive suites at sea and ample public spaces on board, there is simply no better place between sea and sky. The ships are small enough to visit exceptional destinations and berth right in the beating heart of the destination; yet large enough to make sure that everything you could dream of from exquisite fine dining to a personal butler and superlative service is catered for? That’s real luxury. Silversea’s fleet of nine ships sail not only to distinctive destinations such as London’s iconic Tower Bridge, the incredible Northwest and Northeast Passages and the far flung Solomon Islands, but from pole to pole they get you there in superlative luxury. With over 900 destinations whether it is iconic cities or remote shores, wherever you want to go, you can get there with Silversea. Silversea cruises have been voted the best luxury cruise line, so it is no surprise that their suites offer one of the highest space-per-guest ratios of any luxury cruise accommodations. All suites feature ocean views, and most with a private teak veranda.

Regardless of the ship or suite, all guests will be pampered by the personalised services of an attentive butler, sailing in style aboard the best luxury cruise line. Imagine it, as you step back on board, your butler is waiting to greet you with a smile and a glass of champagne; as you step out of the pool, a deck hand has already prepared your towel and as you sit down to dinner, your favourite drink appears as if by magic. With a staff to guest ration of almost 1:1, their service remains the jewel in Silversea’s crown. Devoted, discreet and experienced, these dedicated men and women are the key to turning your trip into a long-lasting memory. With Silversea cruises you enjoy free-flowing premium wines and spirits, delicious gourmet cuisine, in-suite dining, full butler service for every suite and of course all gratuities. Savour the peace of mind of knowing that there is no salient price-tag at the end of a wonderful night of entertainment. Which is also complimentary, by the way. Whether you long to mingle in the Med, swim with the turtles of the Galapagos or embrace the glaciers of Alaska, there is something special about knowing that this cruising is all inclusive. You’re in safe hands with Helen Hayley Sanders visited Beauty with Helen and was delighted with the results It’s fair to say that skincare is something of a labour of love for Helen Scarborough. In fact it has been her life’s work! Helen has over 30 years experience as a skin therapist so there’s very little she doesn’t know about skincare. As a Dermalogica expert the welfare of her clients is Helen’s primary concern and she has incredible enthusiasm to achieve amazing results from her range of treatments. Within minutes of meeting her I was made to feel completely at ease and cared for, safe in the knowledge that I was in safe hands. Helen’s wealth of knowledge and pure enthusiasm for skin care results was evident throughout my appointment. What I liked before I started my facial was the interest she had for me and my skin. It wasn’t a rushed service with her facials lasting 90 mins she takes the time to get to know you, know about your lifestyle so she can choose a facial to give you the best results. Helen explained to me that although some regular facials can be relaxing, you want to get the best from your treatment. She showed me some before and after pictures of clients with varied skin concerns and I really was amazed by the non-surgical pictures she had showed me. She explained about the different ranges Dermalogica produced and how each specialist range was used according to your skin concerns. Adult acne, sun damage/ pigmentation, ageing skin, teenage skin concerns whatever the problem there was a range to suit all. I liked this, as on reflection it does make sense. Why waste your money on something that’s not going to work/ make a difference? Helen goes more in-depth that just your average facial, she used a range of equipment and products that were necessary for my skin concerns. It wasn’t just one facial does all, she adapts and makes her treatments tailor-made to what your skin needs.

was severely dehydrated (I knew this as I drink very little water) Helen marks the results and uses a technique formally known as face mapping to write down levels of oiliness, pigmentation, dehydration, fine lines, deeps lines, breakout activity, redness, milia. Keeping a record of this in order to try and improve the problem areas throughout the facials you may have throughout the year. The treatment itself didn’t just concentrate on my face, a neck and shoulder massage, head massage, arm and hand massage were all included within my allocated time. I really enjoyed this as it helped me to relax! Helen does a range of treatments, Full body massage, HD brows, pedicures, manicures, facials (all aspects), facial peels and much more! What’s better is she’s right on your doorstep, (Within Oliver George Hairdressing, Hoole). Helen’s passion for skin is addictive, I feel I gained so much more knowledge about what my skin needed after my visit and the results from one facial really was amazing. My skin was plumper, looked dewy and fresh and when tested again my hydration levels had gone from 28% (poor) to 56% (good category). It gave me a clearer view point on which products I needed for my skin type and I’m currently looking at changing my current skin care products over to Dermalogica. Helen’s expertise steered me away from quick fixes and I feel if I got these amazing results from one facial imagine if I made this a regular occurrence throughout the year, I could be looking at a younger healthier looking me in no time. I am thrilled to have Helen on my doorstep, quality professionals, qualified to a very high degree and someone that is passionate about what she does is a rarity. I would encourage anyone to book in as I’m 100% certain you won’t be disappointed. Skip the in - out services you sometimes find and treat you or a family member to some ‘down’ time with AMAZING results.

Throughout my personalised facial, Helen looks thoroughly into the hydration levels of your skin. Unfortunately, as I could have predicted, my skin 14 Tel 01244 350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

Neighbours sow the seeds of community spirit People living on Oaklea Avenue and Elmwood Avenue have been showing their community spirit – with colourful results. The neighbours meet up once a month for a curry calling themselves the ‘Young Bucks Crew’, while not to be outdone the ‘Oaklea Deers’ meet for monthly get-togethers too. Lisa Pritchard said: “Our common bond is to create a lost community spirit. We hold garden parties where we pull up the fence panels between our back gardens to create a ‘common garden’ where neighbours can gather together for a chat with a barbeque and children are introduced to become lifelong friends.” The community has raised vital funds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd with apple pressing events, Christmas Carol singing and - this summer - the first annual sunflower competition. There were more than 20 entries to find out who could grow the tallest sunflower. Children and adults truly embraced the challenge. From tiny seedlings at Easter to giant plants by August the early spring rain followed by the long spells of sunshine really helped to grow the huge flowers which was a delight to see when they reached above the garden fences! The tallest sunflower, measuring a staggering 9ft 8ins was grown by eight-year-old Ronnie Hill, of Oaklea Avenue, who was delighted to win his own gardening set and creative mug set. Lisa added: “I’m so proud of our community who collectively raised £170 for the hospice and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Autumn tints in October

W

ith one of the driest summer of recent years this has not been great for gardeners. If you do want to plant anything out, firstly dig a hole at least 50% deeper and wider than the pot. Incorporate a lot of well rotted manure into the soil. This will act as a sponge to retain moisture. Make sure the plant has been standing in water for at least 2 hours to soak the compost. When planting put half a watering can of water in the base of the hole then backfill gradually, adding lots more water as I go. Firm the soil down and add another can of water on the top to settle the soil. Plants that do well in October include Cyclamen hederifolium. These autumn flowering cyclamen are hardy and like a light soil and a sunny dry spot around shrubs. They also do well in pots where the white marbled green foliage looks stunning all winter. Another

bulb that does well in pots is the Nerine with it’s exotic pink flowers late in autumn. Again, they need well drained soil and a light dry soil by a wall would be ideal provided that they are not shaded by larger plants. Crab apples or Malus are in full fruit now with many keeping their tiny apples all winter. You get blossom in spring and coloured fruit in autumn on small trees. The variety Golden Hornet has bright yellow apples, Harry Baker has pink flowers and large red fruit which are good for Crab Apple jelly. John Downie has white flowers and two toned red/orange fruits also good for jelly. All are self fertile so they do not need another variety to pollinate the flowers, unlike some apples. Crab Apples are a good pollinator for apple trees so having one in the garden on a dwarfing rootstock (M9 or M26 for a small tree) is ideal.

This year my Star Jasmine or Trachelospermum jasminoides, has had flowers in summer and the glossy evergreen leaves have already started to turn red. Last winter it stayed red all winter, brightening up the garden. My Acers in pots have also turned to tints of orange, red and yellow. October is the time to finish harvesting tomatoes. Bring green ones indoors to ripen in the heat. Squashes and pumpkins should be ready to store too before any frost arrives. This year my runner beans will have finished early but sometimes they last into October. Pick them and cut the plants down to a stump. Leave them in the soil and they may well re-sprout next spring as mine did this year. Re seed any bare patches of grass after scarifying the soil, adding some compost, then sowing the seed and water in well.

Hoole History Corner Dave Rees, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, explores the history of Hoole’s Britain declared war on Germany and her allies on 4 August 1914. Following mobilisation of the Army the British Expeditionary Force began landing in France on 12 August 1914. It was soon realised that the scale of the conflict and the number of casualties would require many more nursing facilities and much more medical care than the county could then provide. Nation-wide, premises were found to accommodate Auxiliary Hospitals. In Hoole, three were opened; Hoole Bank House (now the Hammond School) in1914; Hoole House in 1915; and Chester War Hospital (taking over the Workhouse in Hoole Lane) in August 1917.

HOOLE BANK HOUSE On 15 August 1914, Mr George W Hayes offered Hoole Bank House to the Red Cross as a hospital for wounded soldiers and sailors, paying the expenses for its conversion, even before the first major involvement of British troops in France on 23 August 1914. The Hayes family were now living near Basingstoke, so the property was available although the domestic staff were still in residence. Harry Leach, their coachman is pictured, with his son also Harry Leach, who served in the Army Ordnance Corps throughout the War, outside the front entrance to Hoole Bank House. Harry Leach Snr and Pte Harry Leach AOC outside Hoole Bank House By 24 October 1914 Lady Mackinnon the Vice-chair of the Chester Branch of the British Red Cross Society was able to announce that Hoole Bank and also Richmond House in Boughton were ready. Appeals were made for donations or support in kind to fund the work of the hospitals. Hoole Bank offered 42 beds from the converted ground floor entertaining rooms and existing bedrooms.

There wasn’t long to wait. The local press announced the first patient as Lance Sergeant W J Tasker, 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment, who was well known in the local area. He was probably Lance Sergeant P T Tasker whose family is believed to have lived in Bishop Street. A further press visit to Hoole Bank on Tuesday 27 October 1914 gave them the opportunity to speak to the next contingent of 4 wounded soldiers to arrive. A further 42 wounded British and Belgian soldiers arrived in that week and most were sent to Hoole Bank including 12 of the 15 Belgians. The arrival of more wounded service men continued and was reported in the press. At that time there were 10 nurses including the acting matron Mrs Hamilton and 2 orderlies. Mrs Mary Smith of Folly House, Commandant of Cheshire 46 British Red Cross Society (BRCS), appears to have then become the Matron. In November 1915 a significant addition to Hoole Bank’s staff was Katherine McGrath, a Canadian, as Matron. Her appointment led to Lt Colonel Prout, Royal Army Medical Corps, who had overall responsibility for the distribution of wounded in the area to concentrate the wounded from the Canadian forces at Hoole Bank. Katherine McGrath stayed until April 1918 when she enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps. She received the Royal Red Cross from H.M the King at Buckingham Palace in April 1918. Numerous lists of local persons making donations and gifts of provisions for the upkeep of Hoole Bank and the other Red Cross hospitals in the area were recorded. Special efforts were made to celebrate the first Christmas of the War. There was a Christmas tree, a special meal and gifts of pipes, tobacco and cigarettes were sent from Mr & Mrs Hayes. Miss Helen Huleatt, then secretary of the Chester Division of the BRCS had organised entertainment. Wounded from Richmond House were invited, and other guests brought the number to over 100. It was over by 8:30pm as a further 11 wounded were received from the Front on Christmas Night. In January 1915 Hoole Bank received a gift of five brace of pheasant and three brace of duck from His Majesty the King. In July, a concert was given by the ‘Child Trio’ and the ‘Kuda Quartet’; a special tea followed using a magnificent Dee salmon donated by Messrs. Totty, fishmongers in Brook Street. Outings were recorded including one to St. Winefride’s Well in Holywell and Pantasaph Monastery for the Belgian patients.

le’s hospitals and their role in World War One. As well as the newspaper reports on numbers of wounded arriving and donations received there are some references to entertainments provided to provide cheer to the patients. Out of this grew the “Whizz-Bangs Pierrot Troupe”, named after the sound made by an approaching German artillery shell. Members included Lilias Mary Napier Officer in Charge and Helen Huleatt who would later be Officer in Charge of both Hoole Bank and Hoole House hospitals. They were pre-war members of the Red Cross branch in Chester as secretary and assistant secretary. Both were from Army families. Lilias’ father was killed in action at Gallipoli in 1915 and Helen lost her brother who died of wounds in 1917. Helen’s grandfather had been involved in the Crimean War and was the subject of some less than complimentary remarks from Florence Nightingale! Throughout 1916 there were reports of support for the hospitals with donations of foodstuffs, cigarettes and tobacco and newspapers for the patients. Concerts to raise funds were held at the Town Hall in Chester and the troops entertained within the hospitals. There were frequent reports of new wounded arriving on a weekly basis. These are two of a number of photographs of nurses and wounded form 1916/17 taken at Hoole Bank House, others are on the Hoole History web site, and available on the Cheshire Image Bank website.

George Hayes’ two sons served in the Forces during the war. The elder, Harry Urmson Hayes was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion Black Watch. He was killed in action on 13 October 1915 taking part in an attempt to take the village of Hulluch from the Germans, during the latter stage of the Battle of Loos. Following Harry’s death, his father endowed a Ward at the Chester Royal Infirmary where a plaque was placed, and which is now in the Hammond School at Hoole Bank. Another plaque was placed in Chester Cathedral. His younger brother Eric Gerald Hayes joined the Royal Naval Air Service and became a pilot joining the80 Squadron Royal Air Force when this was formed on1 April 1918 by combining the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. He was engaged in attacking German artillery positions and was shot down 18 July 1918. Though badly wounded he survived, spending some time in a hotel in Paris which had been converted to a Red Cross hospital, before returning to Britain. 2nd Lieutenant Harry Urmson Hayes and Flight Lieutenant Eric Gerald Hayes l The article can be seen in full at http://hoolehistorysoc. btck.co.uk/WartimeHoole/ HooleHospitals1914-1919. l The next event is on Thursday 18th October when John Hess will talk about the Cheshire historian George Ormerod, whose house he lives in.

Hayley’s health and fitness

Lifestyle tips to get you fit and healthy Read the below for simple steps to becoming a healthy happier you. l Give yourself a realistic target and timescale to achieve. Be mindful that when weight comes off slowly it is more likely to stay off. l Avoid crash diets and quick fixes. Anything worth doing isn’t easy, you might lose 1st in two weeks crash dieting but then as soon as you eat normally you will gain your weight back and more! l You must get moving daily. Office jobs mean many of us are so far from reaching the recommended 10,000 steps a day, log yours with a pedometer and start increasing your steps. l Limit your amount of food, start using the scales to measure your food! When you read calories on the back of food its often based on servings/ grams. People often double this even triple portions to fill their plate. This means your literally eating double the calories per serving of food. l Take your time eating, avoid sitting in front of the TV to eat meals, chew your food properly it will tell your brain your full quicker. l How many take-aways are you having? If it’s more than one a month that’s too many!

l Exercise as well as diet, you might be less on the scales but if you still struggling to get up and down the stairs and can’t run for a bus without getting out of breath, it’s time to get your fitness up. Remember exercise as well as diet promotes all the internal benefits plus increasing muscle mass, which helps take pressure off your joints. l Be careful running, as soon as people diet they also hit to the pavements to shed the weight. Remember if you’re not used to running, build this up gradually, buy decent trainers to avoid impact, this isn’t always the quickest form of exercise to get results you want. Interval training has been proven to be more effective. l Drink lemon water, there are so many benefits to doing this daily, remember to drink more when exercising. l Cut out white bread. Opt for granary! l Remember you’re a role model to your child’s eating habits in later life. If they see you snacking all day on fast foods its likely they will think this is the norm, teach them good habits to prevent them from gaining excessive weight when they grow up.

l Don’t be fooled by ‘no added sugar’, this doesn’t mean there is No sugar in them! There are still natural sugars and carbohydrates, remember to check labels. 40 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

LIFE'S JUST NOT FAIR! I don’t know if you have ever said this “life sometimes is just not fair” I know I have! Situations and circumstances happen within the cause of life that really do seem unfair and at times pretty random. I sometimes wonder to myself why do bad things happen to good people? Why is it that for some individuals the course of life seems to be a very rocky path and for others ‘everything they touch turns to gold?’ During the summer I read the auto biography of Dawn French, I really enjoy reading about other peoples lives and what strikes me time and time again, and it happened in the life of Dawn French is that an opportunity comes along in life where they seem to be in the right place at the right time and then they make a choice to embrace this opportunity. For many this choice leads them on a road to some degree of success with work and life. Looking from the outside this can seem unfair? Why do some people lives break out from what life throws at them whilst others never seem to move on from particular difficult situations and circumstances. This got me thinking about the question, “what is fairness?” Most of us would agree it involves issues of equality, impartiality, proportionality, openness and due process. Most would agree that it is unfair to handle similar matters inconsistently. Most would agree that it is unfair to impose punishment that is not 44 Tel 01244350398
