Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Police hunt for flasher POLICE are appealing for information from the public following two reports of indecent exposure. At 7pm on Tuesday 23rd August, two teenage girls were walking along Chester Millennium Greenway cycle path, near to Dicksons Drive, Newton, when they saw a man using a mobile phone. As the girls got closer to the man they realised that he was exposing himself. The second incident occurred at 8.30pm on the same night when a woman walking along Faulkner Street, Hoole, saw a man exposing himself in the street. The offender is described as a white man, tanned, approximately 5ft 8 inches tall, of slim/ medium build with shaved dark hair, and possibly a moustache. At the time of the incident he was wearing a dark blue/possibly back top, sunglasses and jeans. Insp Karen Jaundrill said: “I would appeal to anyone who recognises the description of this man, or who may have seen the offence take place to contact the team here at Chester. “Although investigations in relation to these incidents are in their early stages, we do believe that these incidents are linked and we are keen to trace the person responsible.” Contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 865 of 23/8/16 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Cheese and wine evening There will be a wine and cheese tasting evening at Hoole Community Centre, Westminster Road, on Saturday 1st October, from 7pm, hosted by Gyles Walker, wine buyer for the Co-op. Tickets £20 for a table of four. Email chestercooplocalforum@ gmail.com for details. Tickets also available from the Co-op stores in Hoole, Kingsway and Westminster Park.
Hoole autumn festival
The Hoole autumn festival will be held on Sunday 25th September in Faulkner Street, Charles Street and in the Community Centre. As well as many of the local businesses which will be open, there will be 42 stalls already booked including South African, Jamaican, vegan food, crafts for the children. There are pop up bars from Chester Beer and Wine and Deva Craft Brewery so you won’t miss any of the live bands, dancers and buskers. The team at the Notting Hoole community group are expanding the festival to the community centre on Westminster Road. There will be activities such as fencing handball and archery for the children. Daisy the vintage caravan Photo Booth will be there too. The stalls will clear away around 5pm when Faulkner Street will reopen. Charles Street will remain closed and the guys from GHQ will play an eclectic mix of disco, funk, old school hip hop and house music. Anything to move your feet and shake your butts.

Hoole History Corner
Hoole History and Heritage Society examine what happened to BISHOP STREET, LAW
T
HESE properties along with those in Faulkner Street, Charles Street and the northern end of Peploe Street (Westminster Road) were the first streets of urban Hoole. They were built on the Flookersbrook Field, also known as Bishop’s Field. On the Hoole Township Tithe Map c. 1839 (in the County Record Office but also available online - in the picture Hoole Rd runs across the top left hand corner). It is shown as Plot No. 13 owned by Charles Hamilton. Through marriage and early heir-less deaths, the land then passed to Thomas Faulkner who sold the Field in building lots in the 1850’s. These were bought by builders and investors as, in today’s terminology, ‘Buy to Let’ projects. the newly-built properties were then rented by workers who had come to Chester following its expansion after the arrival of the railways. The rents were just a few shillings and the tenancies changed hands very frequently.
BISHOP STREET A deed dated 1853 records the sale by Thomas Faulkner to George Brown, builder of Newton, of the land which was to become Bishop Street. The houses were advertised in 1854 as being “well tenanted”. The Street contained 34 terraced houses and it must have been a very tight knit, law abiding, residential community. However this respectability was perhaps marred in 1868 when proceedings were taken against one Samuel Earlam for keeping pigs on his premises at No. 3 “so as to be a nuisance”! Much later when local Manx T. T. rider Bill Smith opened his motorcycle shop he extended Bramhall’s Garage in Westminster Road to occupy the corner with Bishop Street where an enclosed yard now houses Lewis’s Ice Cream vans. Bishop Street was demolished to make way for today’s car park. The Hoole Millennium Book suggests that the Street was named after Bishop Peploe Ward. Unfortunately, Peploe Ward only ever became a Canon and the name more likely alludes to Bishop’s Field or Bishop’s Ditch which flowed into Flookersbrook (the stream).
LAW STREET Built at a right angle to what was then the end of Peploe Street, the next field being Cow Pastures which was not built on until the 1890’s, Law Street consisted of 18 terraced cottages. In 1876 Mr. Lloyd’s cow keeper’s business at No. 2 was sold by auction including “a well bred in-calf cow, a cow in milk, a useful pony and cart and dairy equipment”. The business was still being operated by Elizabeth Griffiths in 1892. The cows were kept on the open land behind. In 1911 a fish and chip shop was run at No. 18 by a Mr. Davis. In response to a query from a reader, the Society discovered some incidents that occurred here. In 1867 a girl aged 2 was crushed by a turning horseHoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.

Law Street
The shop on the corner with Peploe Street was originally a general store. It is remembered by old ‘Hooligans’ as a newsagents called Sharmans and more recently (for 35 years) has been a barber’s and hairdresser’s. Law Street was demolished in the 1960’s; the photograph shows the north side and Sharman’s shop.
GRIFFITHS TERRACE The Terrace was also built at a right angle to the then end of Faulkner Street, on the boundary with Cow Pastures and Thomas Walker/Lightfoot’s lands. Ten terraced cottages led to Hoole Bank where the
Bishops Terrace
Co-op was to be built in 1906, much of the site now being occupied by Walker Street Community Park. On its corner with Faulkner Street the shop at No. 55 sold small wares in the 1920’s and was a grocery store run by Mrs. Kearle in 1952. The illustration shows the Author’s Aunty Alice looking out to see why a photograph was being taken of the last gas lamp in 1967. We have not been able to discover who ‘Griffiths’ was.
FINALLY Although these Streets were condemned in the mid 20th Century, when they were originally they were provided with fresh water and sanitation. The caring administration of the Hoole Local Board, which was democratically elected from 1864, led to good living conditions and a very low mortality rate compared with other urban areas of the country. Hoole aims to go in GB High Street HOOLE is going for gold again in the GB High Street awards after being awarded Best Newcomer Overall at a prestigious ceremony in London in the 2015 competition. Along with the award came a prize fund of £5,000 which the team have been busy spending on the Hoole community. Sue Mason, the tireless chairwoman of the team behind the awards win said “We have been so busy since the awards last year with new and annual events. The Notting Hoole fundraising team put on a hugely successful May Day Street Festival earlier this year which received massive support from the community and the press, and it was pretty much demanded that the Festival become a regular annual event. We wanted to celebrate our achievement and the fantastic support we’ve had from the High Street businesses and the resident community, and I really think we did that!” The Notting Hoole fundraising team have not stopped there. Along with an annual Community BBQ, a Fundraising Football Tournament and of course the Christmas Lights Switch On, the creative team came up with a series of Bags for Life to raise funds for the Hoole Christmas Lights and to increase pride in the area. The set of bags with the slogans ‘There’s No Place Like Hoole’, Cool Hoole’ and ‘Hoole Load of Shopping’ are currently on sale in shops throughout Hoole. The enthusiasm of the team and their reputation for achievement is infectious too it seems. Local M.P. Chris Matheson personally requested the Notting Hoole team advise and mentor the Handbridge Community Association with their

fundraising and their Christmas Light Switch On event, and, as Sue said “Chris has always been totally supportive and an active part of the team, so we just couldn’t turn down an invitation like that from him! “ “One of the advantages of entering the GB High Street Awards is that you are encouraged to come up with new ideas all the time” - this from team Treasurer Sam Jackson. “The judges suggested last year that we give Hoole a stronger brand, so after a brainstorming meeting we came up with ‘Hoole Life’ and the strapline ‘Eat, Shop, Stay’. We have a fantastic new logo designed by a very talented local graphic designer, which we are rolling out throughout the area on window stickers, posters, website, social media and a brand new tourist map of Hoole for local Hotels and B&B’s, which has been designed by a very talented local artist.” In support of this year’s bid, the team have also commissioned a video to be shot and produced by a local freelance film-maker Alicja Socha, featuring many local businesses and residents. Team Secretary Linda Hobbs said “we have been around the area filming over the last week and it has been marvellous to engage with so many people, and see them enjoying themselves in helping us film them. Really inspirational.” The Notting Hoole team are no strangers to inspiring change; thanks to their lobbying there is now a food bank located permanently in Quality Cleaners on Faulkner Street, and Charles Street has a Community Notice board for local events and groups. Sue added: “Hoole is a perfect blend of tradition and trend, and there are so many different facets,

but they all come together to make an exciting, vibrant community. We are proud to represent Hoole and if we can do anything to help preserve that, we will. Too many High Streets decay and stagnate, and we really need to get the message
out that people have to work hard to reverse that trend. We are definitely stronger together.” If you would like to support Hoole’s bid to win the GB High Street Award please follow them on Twitter, Facebook etc….

Traffic problems ahead as new bridge is built on Brook Lane THE closure of Brook Lane bridge is set to cause traffic problems until next summer. Network Rail will replace the existing bridge on Brook Lane with a new one which will require less future maintenance. Work began in September and is due for completion in June 2017. During the work local traffic will be affected but diversions will be in place. Martin Bell, scheme project manager from Network Rail, said: “This work is part of our Railway Upgrade Plan which will provide a better and more reliable railway for Britain. We recognise the work to install this new bridge will cause some disruption and thank people in advance for their patience. The bridge is coming to the end of its useful, safe life and to ensure the railway and road bridge continue to be safe and reliable, we have to replace it.” Residents who would like additional information on the work can call Network Rail’s 24-hour helpline on 03457 114141.

Selling in the Autumn months MANY house hunters active at this time of year are hoping to be in their new home by Christmas so it’s important to get your sale or purchase agreed by mid-October if this is to be achieved. For anyone wanting to move house over the next few months here are a few simple tips which can help you get going!
BUYING TIPS: If you want to agree a purchase at this time of year and move in by Christmas it’s important to have all your financial arrangements in place and to instruct a solicitor who will work quickly and efficiently. Be sure to check with the seller or agent about the home owner’s onward plans. If you get embroiled in a long chain there can often be delays which are out of your control. Book removal companies early. November and December are a busy time of year and many firms get booked up quickly.
SELLING TIPS: As the weather starts to change, gardens will begin to fade from their summer glory and you will need to cutback the hedging, dead-head flowers and sweep up leaves. The weather can be unpredictable so make sure you have a foot-mat for people to wipe their feet on if it’s raining or over-shoes to wear on light coloured carpets. An umbrella is always handy for showing the garden when it’s wet. If it’s a little chilly, get some background heating on or light a small fire. Warm and cosy rooms are very welcoming when it’s blustery outside. Use lamps on darker days to brighten up a room and even have some chilled background music to create the right feel.
If you are thinking of buying or selling over the next couple of months please feel free to contact Somerville’s Estate Agents with any questions or to request a valuation.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
AUTUMN FRUITS October is a month when the garden still sports some colour and foliage before the leaves fall in autumn. Squahes and pumpkins come in a multitude of shapes and colours as can be seen from the attached photo. When you tap the squash it should sound hollow and be ready to be stored in a cool dry frost free place for up to 6 months. Leaves will start to colour up towards the end of the month. Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Creeper has large 3 lobed leaves that turn a brilliant red in autumn. If you have space on a wall and don’t mind climbing ladders every year to stop it going into the gutters, then it will give interest from spring to autumn. Any well drained soil, ideally with moisture will suit it. An underrated plant is the Persicaria affinis varieties with pink or red small bottle brush flowers. Not often for sale but often seen draped over wall or in crevices in gardens they make good ground cover and will flower from late summer into autumn. New varieties are being developed for their striking foliage and one most often seen is Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with deep red and green leaves. Lastly, grasses such as the many Miscanthus varieties, tend to look great at this time of year. They will grow tall to 1.5m and develop silky tassels of flowers in red, pink and cream before fading to straw colours in winter. Miscanthus sinensis likes any type of soil provided it is relatively moist. Paired with lower growing Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm and Sedum spectabile in drifts, it will provide colour and movement in autumn. There is a lot to do in the garden in October. Splitting and replanting perennials so they settle
in for winter. Plant trees and shrubs at this time of year too, except for tender shrubs as they may not survive winter. Planting spring bulbs to give colour from January onwards can start in October although Tulips are best planted in November to avoid disease. Pruning of deciduous shrubs can start although any evergreen shrubs are best left until next spring before cutting back.

It all started watching the news, a as Youth Pastor, before report was about a mum who had turned her 2 sons into the police becoming the Pastor and when they boasted about a violent crime they had committed, as a now Team Leader. result the two men had been convicted and jailed but the rest of her family had disowned her!! I was struck at a number of levels, firstly well done to this woman for doing the right thing! Secondly, I couldn’t understand why or how the rest of her family had reacted in the way they had, and thirdly what a reflection on our society that this story made the national news, surely 30 years ago it would have to be the norm for parents to have done the right thing!! There is so much talk about the state of socity in the UK and there is no doubt that the youth of our nation have the spotlight on them, however we must be careful not to view young people in terms of stereotypes and gross generalisations. The media is very good at perpetuating these. Negative media stereotypes can also influence young people themselves—a kind of self fulfilling prophecy. On a broader level, young people can be discriminated against or treated suspiciously because of stereotypes. This is very important; young people should feel embraced by their community, not alienated by it. There are many young people who are making a postive contribution to life and we can see that many in the next generation are in need of postive role models, the communiictation of good values and a moral and spiritual underatnding of life. Churches across Chester are running Youth Groups and Clubs on a regular basis, with over 300 teenagers involved in them. A proportion of these are part of the D’Biz Youth Work run in partnership with a local charity called The Light Project. Here in Hoole a D’Diz Club and Coffee bar run every Thursday 8pm til 9.30pm and Friday after school 4pm til 5-530pm. Both are a run by church volunteers using the experince and expertise of two part time Youth Workers to provide well-resourced and exciting activities for young people. In fact across Chester more Youth Workers are employed by churches to serve the needs of the youth than by the local authority! This is only one example of such good work with teenagers – we also have the work of the Scouting Movement which also does an excellent work and there are many more I could mention but don’t have space for. I am convinced there is a place for Christainity to be involved in the process of forming the next generation and part of my mission in life is to make sure we hand over the torch of Christainty to the future generation.
