Mark gets on his bike to help old pal A man cycled over the Pennines to raise funds for his old friend who suffered a severe stroke last year. Mark Hughes made the trip in dreadful weather from Ellesmere, in Shropshire, to Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium on a fixed wheel bike. He did it to help Peter Fabian, 62, who had a stroke which left him with weakness on his right side, and speech difficulties. Peter, who lives in Hoole, was an active member and coach of Chester Triathlon Club, Chester Road Club and Total Fitness before suffering a catastrophic stroke whilst training. Mark said: “I met Peter when I was Captain of Chester Triathlon Club and he is one of the best always helping other people and has time for everyone. “Peter is making good progress but needs speech therapy and physiotherapy sessions to improve his speech and movement. “Peter is an inspiration in his fight to improve his condition and I would like to help in my own way.” You can still donate by going to the JustGiving site and searching for ‘markhugheschestertri’

Concerned about care home fees? By Nina Sperring of Hoole-based Bartletts Solicitors If you are considering giving your home or another significant asset away, make sure you receive impartial advice about both the advantages and risks before doing so. Some individuals may receive advice from nonsolicitor advice services but unfortunately those services often provide improper advice about the gifting of assets, claiming to avoid Inheritance Tax or care fees. These services also tend to charge significant fees but sadly the schemes involved very often turn out to be ineffective.

“I regularly see a number of clients who are keen to give assets away to mitigate their Inheritance Tax position or to protect their estates from care home fees in the future but unfortunately they are not aware of all of the risks involved. My duty is to explain both the disadvantages as well as the benefits, but no professional should advise a client whether or not to give away an asset; it is for the client to reach their own decision, having considered all of the pros and cons involved and having taken into account their own personal circumstances.” says Nina Sperring, solicitor at the Chester law firm.

Some of the advantages of gifting assets l The share in the asset that you no longer own may not be taken into account if you have to undergo means testing for benefits or publicly funded services such as care fees l It may provide you with reassurance for the future - knowing that the beneficiary has already been provided for. l It may make matters easier when it comes to administering your estate when you pass away. Some of the risks of gifting assets The Law as well as Governmental Rules regularly change however some of the risks involved at this moment in time are: l There may be tax implications if your property is sold for more than it is worth at the time the gift is made. Furthermore, if an asset has been gifted and you continue to retain a benefit (for example if you continue to live in your home after it has been given away) then this could be treated as a Gift With a Reservation for Inheritance Tax purposes. The Government also introduced an additional tax in 2004, which seeks to catch schemes that previously escaped the Gift With a Reservation rules. This is known as ‘Pre-owned Asset Tax” and has the effect of charging income tax on assets where the individual continues to enjoy/occupy the same. l The full value of the gifted asset could still be taken into account for funding long term care as there are anti-avoidance measures in relation to means testing. The anti-avoidance framework states that if you transfer assets, such as your home, into someone else’s name in order to deliberately avoid Care fees then the Local Authority can treat the value of the asset as part of your capital when they are means testing. l If you move into a home but do not have the financial resources to pay for your care because of the gift of property then the Local Authority may only pay for the basic level of care which would no doubt leave you in a position where you would need the financial support of others. You should normally be sure that you have sufficient liquid assets available to fund your care to ensure that you do not suffer any hardship as a result of transferring your property. It is therefore important that if you are considering giving assets away that you seek professional advice from a solicitor so that you are fully informed of all of the risks and advantages involved. By using a solicitor you could save your estate and beneficiaries a great deal of potential difficulty in the future.

Hoole History Corner

The story of Hoole Road continues with the Shell garage and Moor Park, by Hoole Hi Documents in the Cheshire Record Office enable the history of this side of Hoole Road as far as Canadian Avenue to be traced. In 1708, the Mayor of Chester leased two fields on Hoole Rake (Hoole Road) and St. Ann’s Rake (Hoole Lane) for 99 years to Thomas Kelsall of Mickle Trafford. In subsequent years the Lease was sublet and transferred on several occasions. It was eventually owned by the Rathbone family from the Wirral. The illustration below shows these fields which were advertised for sale in 1852. The red area became Moor Park and the green area became Golden Grove. This stretched from Hamilton Street to Canadian Avenue and included the site of All Saints Church. The field on Hoole Lane was coloured yellow.

A daughter of the Rathbones, Mary Wilson, inherited the land; her husband died and Thomas Tolver (17521828) befriended her. The 1789 Cowdroy’s Directory lists him as a gentleman owning lands in Hoole. He benefited from the inheritance of Mary Wilson in 1797 and himself came to own the lands; he was declared bankrupt in 1800 when he was living at Brook Cottage in Flookersbrook where he died in 1828. The lands previously owned by Mary Wilson were then inherited by Thomas Tolver’s three daughters – Sarah Elizabeth (Paget) (1778-1843), Francis, also known

as Fanny (Bagnall) (1772-1851) and Maria Jane (Moor) (1781-1859). The Tithe Maps c.1839 show that the plots of land on the south side of Hoole Road were owned by Francis Bagnall and some of the eastern plots were held jointly with William Hamilton. Francis Bagnall was also the owner of a house and gardens and the 1841 Census and an 1848 Directory show that this was Brook Cottage. She died in 1851 but the Census of that year shows that her sister, Maria Moor was living with her. During the early 1850’s the lands were sold and by 1853 Maria Moor had given her name to Moor Park which went as far as Hamilton Street. (See advertisement which explains why there are gate posts to Derby Place, Stone Place and Westminster Road). Beyond that, the fields were listed as Golden Grove.

George Meakin, a railway contractor, who had worked for Thomas Brassey on the construction of the new Chester General Railway Station bought a large plot on which The Elms was built. Brook Cottage was demolished to make way for Moor House, which was described in the advert for its auction in 1859 following Maria Moor’s death as a “genteel private residence with exterior gardens and pleasure grounds”. Both Francis Bagnall and Maria Moor were wealthy

Edmund Richard was the Chairman of the Hoole Local Board in 1873, and he was a Guardian of the Poor; he died in 1879. ladies, prominent in subscribing to local causes, which included a donation to the building of Christchurch School in Peploe Street (opened 1857) and the Patriotic Fund. In 1816, they both marched in the first procession of the Flookersbrook, Newton & Hoole Friendly Society from Flookersbrook to the Cathedral; they were still taking part in the Friendly Society marches in 1840 when Francis was 68 and Maria was 60. The Trustees of Maria Moor sold Moor House to George Haworth in March 1860, a colliery owner from Tryddyn; he appears there in the 1861 Census and he was a partner in a number of mining ventures in North Wales; he died in 1865. The occupants of Moor House for the next fifteen years were the Wimperis family. The father, Edmund Richard was the Chief Accountant at the Leadworks and one of his sons, Edmund Morison Wimperis became a wellknown artist; Edmund never lived at Moor House but was brought up in a cottage at the Leadworks where at that time his father was a

By 1891 it was again a private house occupied by Thomas Smith, a draper; in 1893 he was fined 10 shillings and costs for keeping a dog without a license. In the 1901 Census, Joshua Taylor (a railway agent) was the occupant and his widow, Elizabeth Dinel continued to live at Moor House until the 1940’s. In the early 1950’s, Ernest Newport and George Kimpton were recorded as living there and it then became a guest house. It was demolished in 1966 when the Shell Filling Station was built on the site. Endless cleaning getting you down?

We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. Steve, who is part of Hoole All Saints Church, said: “It has been a dream come true being a part of the competition, being surrounded by like-minded designers and working under the guide of the Vice President of Lego, it’s something I never thought possible. I have always been creative and enjoy bringing my ideas to live through Lego.” In each episode the contestants built creations, including a supersized challenge. In the episodes, Steve and his build partner Nate, excelled and demonstrated their creativity and versatility, creating a Chinese banquet out of bricks in episode one, a Pirate-themed Fun Fair for episode two and in episode three, a host of animals including a lemur, crocodile and a chameleon for the Nature theme. The final saw the pairs listen to a six-year-old’s story and then spend three hours recreating the imaginative tale in a spectacular build. The remaining two teams then had two weeks to go to create a showcase build measuring 2 x 2m. The winning pair, Steve and Nate built an incredible piece showing a life-size figure of a stressed man, working at a desk with a working typewriter, whilst his inner child had escaped and was playing with toys, including a Noah’s Ark with moving animals heading into the Ark and a working Jack-in-the-box, on the floor behind him. Both finalist pairs, Steve and Nate and Nicholas and Coba, will now have their creations exhibited at the company headquarters in Denmark. Steve incorporates Lego into the curriculum at Birkenhead School, on the Wirral, and runs robotics as part of the school’s co-curricular programme. 24 Tel 01244350398

HEAVY BURDEN BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER I read recently about a missionary who was living in Africa. He was disturbed over something he was seeing. The women, in the village he was in, walked around with heavy loads of wood piled on their backs. Their husbands, on the other hand, carried nothing more than a walking stick and walked several yards in front of them. It was considered an honour for the women to carry these heavy loads for their husbands. Feeling sorry for them, this missionary saw a need for some wheelbarrows. So he sent a telegram back to the United States, ordering 200 of them to be shipped immediately. When they arrived, he showed the women how to load the wood in the wheelbarrows. A few weeks later, he returned to the village to find the wheelbarrows all parked in a neat row -- unused. He asked, “Why aren’t you using them?” One woman explained, “Well, you see, when we got the wheelbarrows loaded and all of the wood up on our backs, they were just too heavy to push!!” That incident suggests the way a lot of people have experienced Christianity. It holds out a promise to them of a fuller, richer life where all their problems will disappear. In reality, it just brings additional burdens -- one more thing to do, one more thing to worry about. That’s the way, many of us can see Christianity; a list of rules to be kept, a pile of commands that we see as a responsibility to enforce. Yet Jesus hated religion and religious practice. This is

28 Tel 01244350398

what he once said, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Back in the 1st Century the New Testament book of Acts, which tells the story of the early church, records the first time when people were called Christians – “There in Antioch the Lord’s followers were first called Christians” (Acts 11:26). The word was probably a nickname. It literally means “little Christ’s” and referred to someone who was committed to Jesus and trying to follow his teaching. Today in the 21st Century, there can be many sorts of definitions of what is a Christian; Believing the Bible, maybe – though Christians can disagree profoundly about what the Bible says; going to a church, maybe – but going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to McDonalds makes you a hamburger; Being baptised, maybe – though some churches don’t practice baptism and some people who are baptised don’t practice Christianity. Living a morally upstanding life, maybe – though of course many non-Christians do this too; and just how bad do you have to be to stop being a Christian. So for me we need to strip away 1900

years of institution and living on the Christianized Continent of Europe and go back to the 1st Century definition of a Christian: a person who is learning to be like Jesus and learning to do what Jesus could do. The truth is you need both aspects of this definition to begin to understand what Christianity is all about. The word for “disciple” in the New Testament literally means “learner,” and refers to someone who doesn’t just learn what their teacher knows, but becomes the kind of person their teacher is. Jesus told his own disciples, “Anyone who believes in me will do the things that I have been doing…” My hope is that if those of us who would call ourselves Christians live our lives literally as disciples who look like Jesus in character and competency! If we began to do this, then I think we would greatly help those looking on to see what Christianity really is all about.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

AUTUMN FRUITS October is a month when the garden still sports some colour and foliage before the leaves fall in autumn. Squahes and pumpkins come in a multitude of shapes and colours as can be seen from the attached photo. When you tap the squash it should sound hollow and be ready to be stored in a cool dry frost free place for up to 6 months. Leaves will start to colour up towards the end of the month. Parthenocissus tricuspidata or Boston Creeper has large 3 lobed leaves that turn a brilliant red in autumn. If you have space on a wall and don’t mind climbing ladders every year to stop it going into the gutters, then it will give interest from spring to autumn. Any well drained soil, ideally with moisture will suit it. An underrated plant is the Persicaria affinis varieties with pink or red small bottle brush flowers. Not often for sale but often seen draped over wall or in crevices in gardens they make good ground cover and will flower from late summer into autumn. New varieties are being developed for their striking foliage and one most often seen is Persicaria microcephala Red Dragon with deep red and green leaves. Lastly, grasses such as the many Miscanthus varieties, tend to look great at this time of year. They will grow tall to 1.5m and develop silky tassels of flowers in red, pink and cream before fading to straw colours in winter. Miscanthus sinensis likes any type of soil provided it is relatively moist. Paired with lower growing Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm and Sedum spectabile in drifts, it will provide colour and movement in autumn. There is a lot to do in the garden in October. Splitting and replanting perennials so they settle

in for winter. Plant trees and shrubs at this time of year too, except for tender shrubs as they may not survive winter. Planting spring bulbs to give colour from January onwards can start in October although Tulips are best planted in November to avoid disease. Pruning of deciduous shrubs can start although any evergreen shrubs are best left until next spring before cutting back.

Hayley’s health and fitness

LIFESTYLE TIPS TO GET YOU FIT & HEALTHY HERE ARE my simple steps to becoming a healthy happier you. 1. Give yourself a realistic target and time-scale to achieve. Be mindful that when weight comes off slowly it is more likely to stay off. 2. Avoid crash diets and quick fixes. Anything worth doing isn’t easy, you might lose one stone in two weeks crash dieting but then as soon as you eat normally you will gain your weight back and more! 3. You must get moving daily. Office jobs mean many of us are so far from reaching the recommended 10,000 steps a day, log yours with a pedometer and start increasing your steps. 4. Limit your amount of food, start using the scales to measure your food! When you read calories on the back of food its often based on servings/ grams. People often double or even triple portions to fill their plate. This means your literally eating double the calories per serving of food. 5. Take your time eating, avoid sitting in front of the TV to eat meals, chew your food properly it will tell your brain your full quicker. 6. How many take-aways are you having, if its more than one a month is too many! 7. Don’t be fooled by no added sugar, this doesn’t mean there is No sugar in them! There are still natural sugars in them and carbohydrates, remember to check labels. 8. Exercise as well as diet, you might be less on the scales but if you still struggling to get up and down the stairs and can’t run for a bus without getting out of breath, it’s time to get your fitness up. Remember exercise as well as diet promotes all the internal benefits as well as increasing muscle mass, which helps take pressure off your joints.

32 Tel 01244350398

www.

9. Be careful running, as soon as people diet they also hit to the pavements to shed the weight. Remember if you’re not used to running, build this up gradually, buy decent trainers to avoid impact, this isn’t always the quickest form of exercise to get results you want. Interval training has been proven to be more effective. 10. Drink lemon water, there are so many benefits to doing this daily, remember to drink more when exercising. 11. Cut out white bread. Opt for granary! 12. Remember you’re a role model to your child’s eating habits in later life. If they see you snacking all day on fast foods its likely they will think this is the norm, teach them good habits to prevent them from gaining excessive weight when they grow up. 13. Lastly, don’t give up lifestyle changes are one of the most effective ways to shed weight and keep it off Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor 07551 878786

SCHOOL 2018 CHOOSING the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents

much more than a report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, see the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child.
