OPEN AND CLOSED SEPTEMBER will see the new cafe at Hoole Community Centre fully opened after it won a big lottery grant. It will be sad to see the Natwest and Lloyds Bank branches close this autumn. Let’s hope these premises are occupied quickly. There has been huge support for Hoole in the Great British High Street Awards, with people using the #Hoole2Win and #GBHighSt on Twitter - it’s just a pity the bank chiefs don’t feel the same way! I suppose the irony is that Tesco want to move into the old Elms surgery - but no one seems to want them!

Many house hunters active at this time of year are hoping to be in their new home by Christmas so it’s important to get your sale or purchase agreed by mid-October if this is to be achieved. For anyone wanting to move house over the next few months here are a few simple tips which can help you get going!
Selling TipS: As the weather starts to change, gardens will begin to fade from their summer glory and you will need to cutback the hedging, dead-head flowers and sweep up leaves. The weather can be unpredictable so make sure you have a foot-mat for people to wipe their feet on if it’s raining or over-shoes to wear on light coloured carpets. An umbrella is always handy for showing the garden when it’s wet. If it’s a little chilly, get some background heating on or light a small fire. Warm and cosy rooms are very welcoming when it’s blustery outside. Use lamps on darker days to brighten up a room and even have some chilled background music to create the right feel.
Buying TipS: If you want to agree a purchase at this time of year and move in by Christmas it’s important to have all your financial arrangements in place and to instruct a solicitor who will work quickly and efficiently. Be sure to check with the seller or agent about the home owner’s onward plans. If you get embroiled in a long chain there can often be delays which are out of your control. Book removal companies early. November and December are a busy time of year and many firms get booked up quickly.
If you are thinking of buying or selling over the next couple of months please feel free to contact Somerville’s Estate Agents with any questions or to request a valuation.

CHESTER UNION WORKHOUSE 57 HOOLE LANE, CHESTER
The original gates of Chester Union Workhouse were at, what is now, the entrance to Housesteads Drive, on the right of which was the gatemen’s lodge. The drive went through a receiving block
under a gothic arch to the main block, later the main part of the City Hospital. The buildings were imposing, built of red brick, and the main block had a ‘water tower’, topped with a spike on a spire.

THE WORKHOUSE Part 1 the history of this former building on Hoole Lane. The spike was the symbol to vagrants that poor relief and one night’s accommodation in return for work was provided at the workhouse.
Plan from 1911 Ordinance Survey Map.
The new buildings were to replace the ‘House of Industry’ on the Roodee, which was no longer suitable for use as a workhouse. On 26th April 1872 the Local Government Board in Whitehall, London ordered the Guardians of the Chester Poor Law Union to purchase the land on Hoole Lane, described as
‘three fields in Hoole Lane, in the township of Hoole, in the County of Chester, belonging to the trustees of the late Thomas Brassey Esq, containing an area of 16A, 1N, 24R, statute measure, and being numbered in the Tithe Map, 20, 21 and 22’
for a sum of money no greater than three thousand five hundred pounds. The three fields were part of the estate of the late Thomas Brassey, the great railway engineer and contractor, who had undertaken the building of Chester Railway Station. The Local Government Board directed that the land be conveyed to the Guardians of the Poor of the Chester Union, and their successors, to build the Workhouse, its Schools and a Hospital, also whatever was necessary in later years for the relief of the Poor of the area covered by the Chester Union.
The workhouse and its other buildings were to be big enough to hold 450 persons, men, women and children, ‘properly classified’. (Families were separated on entry) The workhouse was to cost no more than £15,750. The School was to be suitable for the reception and the maintenance of 150 poor children,
costing no more than £5,250
The Hospital Infirmary was to cost no more than £3,500 The plan for the workhouse building was the winner of an open competition, submitted by W Perkin and Sons. The new workhouse, opened in 1878, had a large T-shaped main building facing to the east, with a separate infirmary to its west and a school to the south.
The workhouse system clearly expressed Victorian values and attitudes towards the poor. It degraded the poor in order to dissuade them from entering the workhouse. For people of that generation being admitted to the workhouse was the last resort, and a source of great shame. It was the same for the inmates who were born there. It was not until 1904 that children born in the Hoole Workhouse were able to have ‘57 Hoole Lane’ recorded as the address of their birth on their birth certificates. It was only later, in 1920, when those who died there had an address instead of ‘died in the workhouse’ recorded on their death certificates.

HOOLE RANGERS FC
High hopes for new season despite big squad changes After last season’s strong finish by Hoole Rangers 1st team, we had high hopes for the new season. However, several players decided not to play again this year and so the close season was a busy time for team manager Mark Roberts and assistant Craig Jones attracting new recruits and arranging friendly fixtures to look at the new players. Fortunately a number of the strongest of last year’s team stayed with us so we know we will go into the new season with a very competitive squad. l Graham Scheuber will once again manage the 2nd team in division 2, where we are expecting them to fare much better than last season. l The pitch has fully recovered following the drainage work last year and we will be moving back onto it this season. Having monitored its condition through last winter we are very hopeful not to lose as many games to the weather as we have done in the past. l Any new players who are interested in playing for either of our teams would be welcome. Due to mid week fixtures in August and September, training may not be as regular as normal, so please contact either Mark Roberts or myself on the numbers below and we will advise how to get involved l We are also looking for people to help out with the teams on training nights / Saturday afternoons or to help with the general running of the club. Please get in touch if you are interested.

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Hot stuff at Hoole barbecue The Hoole Community barbecue took place this summer and was judged to be a huge success. The weather was kind and the crowds turned up at the Community Centre, and later at the Suburbs for the event, one of many which brings the people of Hoole together. Some other interesting facts were: many people believe you need a ticket to go to church (where is the box office?); some believe church is like a golf club, only open to members; as well as some who believed they can only go if invited.
