Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Hoole and Newton
areas & Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

A new business group is being set up in Hoole to help promote the area. Local businesses and organisations want to create a group with the sole purpose of increasing footfall and popularity and better cooperation within the Hoole community. Making Hoole Stronger is being spearheaded by Kingdom Thenga, owner of the Hollows and the Suburbs, on Charles Street. The aim is to build on Notting Hoole and the success in reaching the final of the Great British High Street Awards. Kingdom said: “Hoole is a suburb which prides itself on independent businesses, so a community forum available for like-minded business owners to share ideas is something desperately missed in Hoole.

Hoole History Corner
John Ebo, from Hoole History and Heritage Society, continues the story of Flookersb IN the 19th century the area known as Flookersbrook straddled the turnpike, now Hoole Road, and according to Gore’s Directory residents commonly cited ‘Flookersbrook’ as their postal address. Indeed the land immediately adjacent to the modern Westminster Road was known as ‘Flookersbrook Field’ and later Bishop’s Field. Whenever any portion of it was sold the deeds always referred to it as Flookersbrook Field and might still do so today. The re-naming came about, perhaps, as Westminster Road was formerly named Peploe Street after the former Bishop of Chester. The only reference to this today is Bishop Street, now a car park, which sits within the former field. Flookersbrook Thomas Walker Field came into the ownership of Thomas Walker (Walker Street). He was a successful local businessman owning the Tannery Yards situated where Brookside Terrace and West Street are today and the Lion Brewery in Chester. He married the daughter of John Lightfoot (Lightfoot Street). Their daughter married into the Pickering family who are also recorded as a street name.
Other notable landowners were the Earl of Kilmorey, an Irish Peer, who may not have lived locally, and Charles Brown. The local roads bearing the name ‘Kilmorey’ reflect the Earl’s previous ownership. His descendant, the current Earl was an MP, Sir Richard Needham, who served as a Northern Ireland minister. Charles Brown bought the Folly in 1860 and was of the second generation of the Brown family to be involved in public life in Chester. Interestingly no local roads are named after him but he did leave a significant legacy to our area. The Brown family began their ascendency in Chester with the brothers William and Henry. William Brown was influential in bringing the Railway to Chester, the original idea being that Chester was only to be a branch line. He was also instrumental in the commissioning of the fine station in Flookersbrook which was designed by Thomas Brassey Charles Brown, nephew of William, was also much involved in local politics and was ultimately six times Mayor of the city. He was Mayor in 1880-81, 1883-85 and from 1891-3. It was said that he anticipated a knighthood but, perhaps,
Charles Brown
John Lightfoot owned the Ermine Hotel and land including where Halkyn Road exists today. It is said that he effectively died intestate having left his property to his son who pre-deceased him by six days! The ensuing legislation arising from claimants took decades to resolve and may be reflected in property deeds today. Hoole History and Heritage Society always welcomes enquiries and information about our past.
FLOOKERSBROOK Part Two
ersbrook, from the 19th Century to the modern day. 1s 6d (7.5p) per linear yard. Today a flat rate is paid Such an enclosure was not approved by all and Charles Brown was criticised for ‘improving’ his own property, which was true, but he did expend some £3000 (over £300000 in today’s money!) largely for the public benefit. Further controversy occurred in 1898 when the Trustees exercised their right to close their land to through traffic from Halkyn Road to Kilmorey Park Avenue. At the turn of the 20th century cuts were made through the plantations to give direct access to Ermine Road and Kilmorey Park Avenue.
this was forfeited through his involvement in the affairs of the 1880 election which led to the disenfranchisement of Chester for five years. In the 1870’s he was much concerned with the state of the ‘pits’ at Flookersbrook which abutted his own property. These were stagnant and unpleasant ponds often used to water cattle being driven to market. He was unsuccessful in persuading the Hoole Local Board to make improvements and resorted to a private Act of Parliament. Together with the Earl of Kilmorey he set aside lands to be created as ornamental gardens enclosed by railings and for the stream to be culveted. This Act, the Flookersbrook Improvement Act, gained Royal Assent on 1st June 1876 and gave rise to the modern Flookersbrook. The Flookersbrook Improvement Act provided for a Trust for the management of the lands and the appointment of seven Trustees. The original Trustees included Charles Brown, the Earl of Kilmorey and appointments made by the Turnpike Trust, Hoole District Board, the ratepayers of the Township of Newton. Today there are still seven Trustees reflecting the Act in modern terms. The Act also provided for income to maintain the plantations by way of a levy on the ‘frontergers’ at
In 1923 the War Memorial was erected on the edge of the plantations opposite The Elms which was then ‘Hoole Town Hall’, and was dedicated at Easter. In 1949 the low masonry wall with inserted plaque was added to commemorate those who died in the Second World War. In these two articles we have seen how Flookersbrook has developed from a manorial estate to a unique urban location. The plantations provide for a pleasant and actively maintained setting as you approach Chester. But on closer examination we have learnt that ‘Flookersbrook’ was, not long ago, regarded as a much wider area covering much of the modern Hoole. How did this re-naming come about and should the original naming have greater prominence? Perhaps this should be better recognised? The author would welcome comments. Next time, in Part 3 we shall include images of old Flookerbrook. Find out more about the Ermine Hotel (now the Flookersbrook) at our next meeting on Wednesday 21st September at 7.30pm in the Community Centre, Westminster Rd, when Ralph Earlam will explore its long history. Extend or Move?
M
ANY people love where they live - the house, the neighbours and the location - but when things become a bit cramped they often face a difficult decision: “Do we extend or do we move?”
take appropriate loading of a floor rather than a ceiling? Do you need planning permission? All of these things cost money but you won’t necessarily see a great benefit from the expense incurred.
As estate agents we are always being asked for our opinion and predicted end value of a house if extended. Here are a few hints, tips and some questions to get you thinking about whether extending your home is right for you.
SIDE EXTENSION
How much will the house be worth if we extend? Generally speaking if your property is already in good condition and you decide to extend into the loft or at the back of the house you should plan to stay for the medium to long term. A good quality extension will usually cost anywhere from £30,000 upwards, but you are not guaranteed that this amount will be transferred straight to the end value of your home. LOFT CONVERSION If you want to extend into the loft we generally advise that you try and incorporate an ensuite as well as another bedroom. This will be more expensive but will certainly help with end value. Think about access into the new loft room. Will you lose a bedroom creating space for a second staircase? Is there enough head height or will you need to include dormers and a new roof? Will the joists need strengthening to
Extending to the rear or side to create a large kitchen and social space is always popular but consider how much garden area will be used. Family houses with small gardens can sometimes struggle when it comes to resale. Also think about a two storey extension rather than just single. The cost does not double but the space can. Have a look where your drains are. How close to the boundary can you build? Will you need a party wall agreement? Will a neighbour have a right to light issue? Can you build under permitted development or do you need permission? Whatever you decide to do, make sure you get the relevant building regulations approval and we always advise consulting an architect before you approach a builder. If you are facing a decision about whether to extend or move, do contact Somerville’s Estate Agents to discuss things through. We will be able to provide you specific advice about your property and an estimate of the current and post-building work value.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
GLORIOUS WARM AUTUMN COLOURS
In early autumn the colours change from pastels to hot colours and if you plan your garden scheme you can have a concentrated area filled with autumn colour. Autumn flowering shrubs that are reliable and flowers for weeks are the varieties of Hibiscus syriacus. These shrubs will grow on most soil provided they retain moisture. They take a year or two to start to grow and also come into leaf later in spring than most shrubs. However, the show from the large flowers ranging from white with pink centres, to dark pink, blue and pure white is well worth it and once settled in, they can get to 2m tall. For drier soil, how about Abelia Frances Mason. This likes a slightly sheltered position if it is to keep some foliage in winter. The leaves are green and yellow with fragrant white flowers in autumn. One photo is of Abbeywood gardens near Delamere with its prairie planting of grasses such as the tall golden Stipa gigantea and swathes of perennials in wide open spaces. They look stunning at this time of year. One of the plants featured are Sedum spectabile with flat heads of pink flowers
loved by bees. In theory they like a well drained soil and their fleshy leaves do well in drier conditions but they also grow in damper soils. Plant next to Rudbekia fulgida Goldsturm with its yellow flowers for a striking colour combination. Work to do in the garden includes starting to plant daffodils and crocuses for spring. Divide summer flowering perennials and replant them, watering in well to rejuvenate them for next season. Water and harvest runner beans and tomatoes regularly to extend the season. Tomatoes take time to ripen so don’t give up if they stay green, leave them on the plant to ripen. If you have grown pumpkins and squashes, remove leaves so that they ripen. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. You can visit Abbeywood Gardens Delamere ifrom Sunday to Thursday. Mount Pleasant gardens near Kelsall are open on 3rd and 4th September with their Sculpture Exhibition so do go and see the many different themed borders, ponds, stumpery and ferns.

Hoole BBQ - Eat, dri The 3rd Hoole Community BBQ began in style as dozens of children from local primary schools were marched into the Community Centre by Dewa Roman Soldiers Experience. It’s fair to say that they came, they saw & they partied!! Hundreds of people flocked to Hoole Community Centre in July to enjoy an evening of food, drink, live music and dancing, and raised nearly £4,000 for charity in the process!! Dance troupe House of Dance performed to an adoring crowd, including ex Liverpool footballer Ainsley Harriott with Kingdom Thenga, from the Suburbs, at the grill.
and proud dad John Barnes, whose daughter was performing on the night. Ainsley Harriott also took a turn on the BBQ, serving burgers & hotdogs to very pleased customers. There was plenty of entertainment for the kids face painting, decorating your own gingerbread man, lots of sports to play, including Archery, football and fencing. The annual event raises much needed funds for Hoole Community Centre, a local charity and a valuable resource offering services to many
rink and be merry! sectors of the local community. Money also goes towards the cost of putting on the Hoole Christmas Lights Switch On, a very popular community event, funded entirely by donations. The BBQ was organised by fundraising group Notting Hoole, the team behind the successful May Day Street Festival in May. Chairwoman of the group Sue Mason said: “The whole team has worked so hard to put on this event but it’s all worthwhile when you see how much everyone enjoys themselves, and knowing
that we are helping support our local community. The Notting Hoole Committee would also like to thank all the volunteers who made this possible, and all the wonderful people and businesses who donated their time, products & prizes to make the event such a success.” The next event is an Autumn Street Fayre in September. FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER
I read recently about a missionary who was living in Africa. He was disturbed over something he was seeing. The women, in the village he was in, walked around with heavy loads of wood piled on their backs. Their husbands, on the other hand, carried nothing more than a walking stick and walked several yards in front of them. It was considered an honour for the women to carry these heavy loads for their husbands.
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 28 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
Feeling sorry for them, this missionary saw a need for some wheelbarrows. So he sent a telegram back to the United States, ordering 200 of them to be shipped immediately. When they arrived, he showed the women how to load the wood in the wheelbarrows. A few weeks later, he returned to the village to find the wheelbarrows all parked in a neat row -- unused. He asked, “Why aren’t you using them?” One woman explained, “Well, you see, when we got the wheelbarrows loaded and all of the wood up on our backs, they were just too heavy to push!!”
That incident suggests the way a lot of people have experienced Christianity. It holds out a promise to them of a fuller, richer life where all their problems will disappear. In reality, it just brings additional burdens -- one more thing to do, one more thing to worry about. That’s the way, many of us can see Christianity; a list of rules to be kept, a pile of commands that we see as a responsibility to enforce. Yet Jesus hated religion and religious practice. This is what he once said, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me— watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Back in the 1st Century the New Testament book of Acts, which tells the story of the early church, records the first time when people were called Christians – “There in Antioch the Lord’s followers were first called Christians” (Acts 11:26). The word was probably a nickname. It literally means “little Christ’s” and referred to someone who was committed to Jesus and trying to follow his teaching. Today in the 21st Century, there can be many sorts of definitions of what is a Christian; Believing the Bible, maybe – though Christians can disagree profoundly about what the Bible says; going to a church, maybe – but going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to McDonalds makes you a hamburger; Being baptised, maybe – though some churches don’t practice baptism and some people who are baptised don’t practice Christianity. Living a morally upstanding life, maybe – though of course many non-Christians do this too; and just how bad do you have to be to stop being a Christian. So for me we need to strip away 1900 years of institution and living on the Christianized Continent of Europe and go back to the 1st Century definition of a disciples: someone who was committed to leaning to life lives becoming more like Jesus and learning to do what Jesus did. The truth is you need both aspects of this definition to begin to understand what Christianity about. My hope is that if all of who would call ourselves Christians lived our lives literally as disciples who were like Jesus in character and did what Jesus did in actions! If we began to do this, then I think we would help those looking on to see what Christianity really is all about. 24 Tel 01244350398 www.hooleroundabout.com

CHESTER NATIONAL TRUST VOLUNTEERS Chester National Trust Volunteers (CNTV) is looking for new members. The group carries out land management tasks within a radius of 30 miles of Chester. Tasks include hedge laying, dry stone walling, path maintenance, planting trees, building tree guards, fencing, and many other tasks that NT Rangers ask us to carry out. CNTV was formed over 25 years ago, a group of around 50 friendly people of varying ages, (18 - 70+), who enjoy friendship, working together and good fresh air. We work across Cheshire, the Marches (Chirk and Erddig) and the Wirral. What constitutes a work day? You can choose to work on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday. Arrive at the site at 10am (it may be possible to share transport but your own car is an advantage) and work until 4pm (with regular breaks – mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon). Do what you feel capable of, enjoy the company of like-minded people and breathe good fresh air! There is always a task for everyone. No prior knowledge or experience is required, only a willingness to get involved and work hard. Be ready for any weather and any job. After completing 50 hours of volunteering, there is the added bonus of receiving a National Trust volunteers card which entitles you to free entry at all National Trust properties, and discounts in some of their shops and cafes. If you are looking for an opportunity to spend time outside, give something back to the countryside and have fun – whatever your age or abilities – you can get in touch by contacting Dick Pole at dickpole@zcl-uk.net
