Hoole History Corner
The story of Hoole Road, starting with the stretch Lightfoot Street to the petrol stati application for a fuller licence in 1884 revealed that The Globe had been replaced by a new hotel called The Beehive. This was owned by Thomas Henry William Walker, an architect from Liverpool. Together in partnership with his brother, John Lightfoot Walker, he also owned the Lion Brewery in Pepper Street, Chester. They were the great grandsons of John Lightfoot and the grandsons of Thomas Walker. Refusal for the fuller licence resulted in a fresh application in 1886 which described The Beehive as “picturesque and pretty and
The Lord of the Manor, the Earl of Shrewsbury, owned this land and on the 1789 plan of his Estates (see May Roundabout), the western part (No.3) was rented to Edward Ommanney Wrench the owner of Dee Mills which burnt down in 1789. The eastern part (No.4) was rented to the Artingstall family, who ran the Ermine Hotel. John Lightfoot (1758 to 1832) married Mary, the widow of John Artingstall, the Landlord, in 1783. He then became the Landlord from 1786 to 1818. John Lightfoot eventually owned a number of properties in Flookersbrook, and must have acquired this land from the Earl of Shrewsbury. Following John Lighfoot’s death in 1832, research suggests that the land rightfully belonged to his Trustees, although the Tithe Map Records (c.1839) show the land to be in the ownership of his son-in-law, Thomas Walker. The prominent property on the land rented by Edward Ommanney Wrench was the western facing Ashtree House which was set in extensive grounds. William Williams who ran the Flookersbrook Tanyard for Thomas Walker was also his tenant at Ashtree House. After his death in 1860 his wife continued to live there. However, by 1878, Ashtree House had become a Ladies School run by Mrs. Thomas whose husband, Thomas Lloyd Thomas was a newspaper reporter. When Tomlinson Street was built in the 1880’s the house was demolished.
BEEHIVE
The earliest record of a licensed premises appears in an 1857 Directory. The 1861 Census lists the Globe Tavern run by Robert Hand, who was described as a “railway servant and beerhouse keeper”. An
having 8 bedrooms and stabling for four horses”. During the application, it was revealed that T.H.W. Walker was the owner of land on either side of The Beehive. As an architect, he probably designed the new hotel and the houses built on either side (the terrace to the west was named Brookside Villas to the east was Hawthorne Villas). The application was again refused apparently on a technicality, but opposition from The Ermine and from the abstinence movement no doubt played a large part in the decision. The name “The Beehive” first appears in 1869 when the Innkeeper was William Smith. It was Albert Bailey, the Landlord in 1884, who first applied for a full licence. Over the next 30 years there were to be 9 different Licensees. T.H.W. Walker withdrew from his Lion Brewery partnership in 1888 and his brother sold the business to Thomas Montgomery in 1893. The Lion Brewery continued to supply the beer until it was taken over by Bents Brewery in 1903.

BANK
The 1891 Licensing Register shows that The Beehive had “6 beds for travellers and accommodation for supplying refreshments for 30 people”. Functions were held at the Hotel and the annual supper of “Railway Bus and Cab Drivers” was held from 1869 onwards, presided over by Mr. Samuel Weaver, whose cab and posting business effects were sold by auction there in 1895. Coroners’ Inquests took place and when Chester Football Club played at the Tomkinson Street ground The Beehive was used for changing purposes. During the First World War, Hoole Urban District Council distributed surplus sugar from here to soft fruit growers for the making of preserves and jams. Another application for a full licence was made in 1892 prior to the Royal Agricultural Show being held in Hoole in the following year. The only opposition was from The Ermine Hotel. However, in spite of support from the Chairman and several Members of the Hoole Local Board, and a petition signed amongst others by the Rector of Plemstall and the Church Wardens of All Saints
Church, the application was refused. This was probably due to the advice of Colonel Cope, on behalf of the Police, that the full licence was not required. The occupants of Brookside Villas and Hawthorn Villas were mainly from the professional classes- clergy, surveyors, auditors and doctors and dentists. Some of the houses were used as surgeries. From 1900 the properties were assimilated into the numbering of Hoole Road and lost their identities. Before the advent of the big banks further along Hoole Road, the need for banking services for the working man had been recognised by the Chester & North Wales District Savings Bank and their Hoole branch was built into the fabric of No.13. It eventually became Lloyds TSB and for many years the clock in its window was the only public time piece in Hoole to rival that on the steeple of All Saints Church.
CLOSURE
Time has not stood still; the bank has closed and The Beehive is now a branch of Richer Sounds.

Hoole let the hops out!
Once again there was a festival atmosphere in Hoole for the inaugural Beer Festival at Hoole Community Centre. Hundreds of people sampled dozens of real ales and artisan ciders, accompanied by live music entertainment from local singers and bands playing original music. Event organiser Sue Mason, from the Notting Hoole group, said: “We were thrilled with the positive feedback we received from our attendees. Everyone had a fantastic time and can’t wait to come back again next year. We have already booked the venue for 2018!” Owner of Chester Beer & Wine Samantha Jackson said ‘After 12 months of planning it was great to see the event getting such amazing support from the local community as well as many visitors from all over the North West who came for the Beer Festival but stayed for the weekend to explore Chester.” Photographs courtesy of Ian Southerin and Rik Pinchin

But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. HAPPY ‘NEW YEAR’! BY THE REV ANDY GLOVER I would like to wish all our Jewish readers in Hoole “L’Shanah Tovah”, have a Happy New Year 5778. Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of the Hebrew month Tishri. In 2017 this will begin at sundown on Wednesday 20th September and ends at sundown on Friday 22nd September. The Jewish New Year celebration begins with the blowing of the shofar (the ram’s horn) in the synagogue. This marks the start of the ten High Holy Days of the Jewish calendar. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah literally means, “head of the year” or “first of the year.” Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. The Jewish New Year is no different from that of other religions and cultures in that there are many traditions and symbolic foods associated with it. But unlike the UK culture, there isn’t lots of wild partying. Rather, the holiday is a period of prayer and reflection shared with one’s family and friends. There is, however, one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the UK one: Many of us use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making “resolutions.” Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the New Year.
Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 29 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.
Let’s explore a little the concept of new beginning; this can be in the arena of fitness and health, or maybe in the arena of relationships, throughout life we need from time to time to think about making a new start. But is it possible to start again or to begin to follow new course or direction in your life. Christianity has at its heart the concept of new beginnings, a second chance, and the opportunity to change. Forgiveness is a key to the embracing of new beginnings especially in relationships – is there someone you need to contact or reconnect with - a friend or family member, maybe even your spouse or partner where a new beginning is needed. To build a relationship we will need to give and receive forgiveness, this is true in our relationship with God – many times in my Christian faith I have needed to know that I am forgiven. Maybe this month of September could be the time for you to experience a new beginning to experience the change you desire to see in your life. I hope that this “New Year” will be a year of new opportunities and experiences. Why not, as the hash tag on twitter says, #TryChurch Visiting a church for the very first time can be a tough experience. Where should I go? What should I wear? What time should I show up? What’s here for my kids? What can I expect? These and many more questions can surface. So I’d like to put you at ease. Your first visit to HBC Chester will be refreshing, friendly, and enjoyable for your whole family. We want you to experience inspiring music, helpful teaching from the Bible, friendly people, and a place where you feel welcomed and “at home”. This is a place where you can experience new beginnings! In September we shall be looking out for and ready to welcome any 1st time guests. On the 1st and 3rd Sunday we gather together at Chester Catholic High School and on the 2nd and 4th Sunday in Hoole Lighthouse Centre. We start at 10.30am and finishes by 12.15pm although we always serve good coffee at the end. On our website we have a page dedicated to helping out first time visitors to our Sunday Morning Celebrations http://hbc. org.uk/visiting-hbc/new-to-church During the morning there is usually singing, teaching that helps us to understand the Bible, prayer, listening and responding to God and an opportunity to meet with others. Children and young people are in the main church for the first 15 minutes of the celebration, after they go out into their groups. There is also a crèche for under 3’s. My hope is that with any first visit to HBC Chester or any of the Hoole churches would be a friendly and enjoyable experience for the whole family, I would personally like to invite you along. This is what one person said who came along last year; “I was surprised when I got to the church that morning. It was different to what I’d imagined, and the people were very friendly. I didn’t feel like they were trying to shove religion down my throat, they let me make up my own mind. It was a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, just like one big family. I would recommend it to others: you never know where it could lead you. My whole life has changed completely in the last year.” I end with the Jewish New Year Prayer: “May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a year of health, happiness and prosperity. Let this be a time for renewing faith and hope for peace.”

Centenary of Hoole soldier’s death in the Great War FRIDAY 22nd September marks the 100th anniversary of the death of a young man whose name appears on the war memorial on Hoole Road. Born on 4th March 1894 at 68 New Peploe Street (now Westminster Road), James Edward Bowe was the younger son of Jacob and Frances Bowe, of 77 Faulkner Street. He came from a staunch Methodist family and his name also appears on a cornerstone at Hamilton Street Church laid by his father. His nephew, known to everyone as Ted, and who was named after his uncle, survives him and lives in Newton. James was killed during the third battle of Ypres and is buried in Bedford House Cemetery, near Zillebeke. Of the 5,139 British Empire servicemen buried there, he is one of the 2,194 identified casualties. He joined the South Lancashire Regiment on 1st March 1917 and after initial training at Barrow-in-Furness, he went to France on 20th June where he was a Private with the Royal Engineers. Before joining the army he was in the service of the London and North Western Railway as a checker at Queensferry. Letters from his captain, SW Schwabe, and sergeant B Jarram reached his parents on 1st October. Capt Schwabe wrote: “I hope and trust that it will ease your sorrow a little when I tell you that he died nobly and uncomplainingly doing his duty, and that it is due to his sacrifice and to the sacrifice of many of his comrades that our line is still advancing and peace thereby brought nearer.” Sgt Jarram added: “We were holding a certain part of the line when a German shell dropped in the trench, killing your son instantly. We are more than sorry to lose such a good soldier and comrade, for he was liked by everyone who came into contact with him. We did all that was possible for him and buried him as decently as possible under the circumstances.” James’s great nephew, John Nickless, of Hoole, visited his grave in 2014, the first family member to do so since James’s father Jacob in the 1920s.

SCHOOL 2018 CHOOSING the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. Over the next few pages you can learn about some of the open days that will be running across the area during the autumn months. Open days are so important because they can show parents much more than a report or a school league table. You get to meet staff, ask questions, see the facilities and see how the school operates. Looking for the right school is like searching for the perfect home. It’s only when you step inside that you know if it’s right for you and your child. Hoole Roundabout September 2017

New headmistress appointed to the Queen’s School The Governors of The Queen’s School are delighted to announce the appointment of a new Headmistress from January 2018. Following a rigorous recruitment process, Miss Lyndsay Hilton has now been appointed to the role. Miss Hilton joins Queen’s from Exeter School in Devon, which was recently rated Excellent in every category by ISI inspectors and where she currently oversees the highly successful academic and co-curricular programmes as Assistant Head. After a successful career in the chemical industry, Lyndsay moved into teaching in 2004 and has worked previously in leadership roles within the state and independent sectors. Her appointment follows the announcement that current Headmistress Sarah Clark will move to take up the role of Headmistress of the North London Collegiate School in January 2018. Miss Hilton said: “As someone who has always been passionate about the education of girls, I am delighted and honoured to be named as the new Headmistress of this outstanding school. “I believe that girls should always aim high; they should be inspired, supported and challenged to think and work independently so that they may take their life in whichever direction they choose. “I know that these are also the values of The Queen’s School and I am excited to be leading the school’s future, working closely with staff, pupils and parents to build on its current success.” As well as being a regular open water swimmer and climber, Lyndsay is also a keen adventurer and has previously been selected to take part in a scientific research expedition to Antarctica with the Fuchs Foundation. She will join the school as Mrs Hilton-Lang following her wedding in the summer. Chair of Governors Mrs Marion Ardron said: “We were looking for someone who has a rare mix of qualities, skills and experience - and in Lyndsay we have found it. “Sarah Clark has been an excellent Headmistress and has developed the school into a modern, dynamic learning environment for able girls to thrive and develop. We look forward to working with Lyndsay to build on this legacy.”
Enjoy the challenge...
Girls thrive at The Queen’s School because we value them as individuals, inspiring, supporting and challenging them to excel. Come along to our Open Morning to find out more. Take a tour led by one of the girls and meet our highly qualified team, including Miss Lyndsay Hilton who will take the helm from January 2018.

Abbey Gate College celebrates 40 Years with special gala concert In July, Chester based independent school Abbey Gate College hosted a special Gala Concert as it marked its 40 years anniversary. As part of the concert, 75 past choir members joined the current choir producing a spectacular sound of 140 voices. The concert was directed by Mr Stewart Smith (right, above) who is retiring after 39 and a half years as Director of Music. During this time, he has led a thriving music department with many of his former pupils progressing to careers in opera, music production and cathedral music. At the concert, the audience also enjoyed performances from the Infant and Junior School choir, instrumentalists, and vocalists. The choir has sung in most English cathedrals including London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, where they will return to in April 2018. The choir has also toured to various locations including France, Belgium (Menin Gate), St Mark’s Venice, Germany, Italy, Holland, Denmark and the west and east coast of the USA on two occasions. The concert also welcomed the new Head of Music, James Andrews (right, below) who, as well as being a former pupil of the College, is an ex-Head Chorister of Chester Cathedral and a graduate of the Birmingham Conservatoire. He begins his post in September 2017. For videos of the night’s performances go to the Abbey Gate College YouTube channel. 44 Tel 01244350398

Firs School Chester Celebrates Popularity of Fir Cones Provision for two year olds
Independent pre-school and primary education for boys and girls 2-11
The Firs School Chester is delighted that since opening the Fir Cones, a new two year old provision, in February, they have been welcoming lots of new pupils to the school. Building on the success and experience of the Pre-School Kindergarten the school now caters for 2-11 year olds. This all year round provision for two year olds offers wrap around care 7:45-6pm (if required) and is located in the dedicated space within the Pre-School Kindergarten building and offers healthy delicious meals prepared on site. The Early Years at the Firs School was recently a finalist for a national Independent School’s Association award for outstanding quality. Lucy Davies, Head teacher at The Firs School comments; “We are delighted to have been
nominated for this prestigious ISA Award and are very proud of our teachers and children. We pride ourselves on inspiring children to learn and we believe these early years are critical in encouraging children to love to learn. The judging process is very thorough and evidence can be wide- ranging and includes an inspection of the school along with evidence of innovation in provision.” The ISA Awards celebrate those making remarkable strategic and financial contributions to independent schools across the UK and provides the benchmark for the sector as a whole. All shortlisted schools can demonstrate value for money to their parents.
