Park spruced up for summer Pupils from Westminster Community Primary School have taken part in a planting activity in Ellesmere Port’s Westminster Park in time for the summer holidays. The final stage of a £36,000 improvement project in the park, pupils helped staff from Plus Dane Housing Trust and the Council to fill the raised bed seating feature, based in the centre of the park, with colourful flowers and plants to provide seasonal interest Works to improve play and leisure facilities for park users were completed earlier this year and included the provision of new toddler play equipment and enhancements to sports facilities with an extension of the tarmac pitch and the installation of a second goal to enable team sports to be played at the park. Local member, Councillor Pat Merrick, said: “The improvements for Westminster
Park have come as a direct result of local residents sharing their community’s ideas and I’m delighted to see local children get involved in finishing the project. “I hope that the community now make the most of the new facilities, especially as the summer holidays draw closer and we enjoy great weather.” Peter Jones from Plus Dane Housing Trust said “We were really pleased to support this project and involve local young children in the implementation of it. Headteacher Westminster Community Primary School Sue Finch, teaching staff, Plus Dane Housing’s Verna Ainsworth and Sharon Simpson, Richard Walters from Parsons the contractor who completed the improvements at the park and pupils and Mary Lavery from the council’s Total Environment Team

Stanley is three years old and very friendly. Unfortunately Stanley has the FIV virus so must be kept as an indoor cat. He will make a very loyal and loving companion. He follows his fosterer around everywhere and when she sits down Stanley thinks it is especially so he can sit on her lap. Stanley is the perfect companion, he is happiest on your knee, or on the newspaper you are trying to read. Cats with FIV make ideal indoor companion animals.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.
Bunbury Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?
A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Redundancy leads to creativity AFTER many years of working at Thornton Research Centre for Shell UK, former Lab supervisor, Sue Harper, has joined forces with her artist cousin, Christine Holme, to form BuzzyB art and craft workshops. Sue was made redundant at Christmas and took the decision to turn a life long love of crafts into a career opportunity. Sue took a part time job and enrolled on a craft course at West Cheshire College, Ellesmere Port. Sue said: “Being made redundant has given me the opportunity to spend time doing the things I enjoy most. As a Mad Science presenter, running after school clubs in primary schools, I get to work with children and I love it! Doing the craft course has been a dream come true. I have loved knitting and sewing from an early age and have enjoyed doing lots of crafts over the years.” The idea for BuzzyB was born when Sue and Christine realised how much they had in common. Christine is an independent artist and art tutor and former primary school teacher. Joining forces to run art and craft workshops seemed like the perfect idea for a partnership. “There are so many people interested in art and craft and we want to encourage their creativity. We are going to provide art and craft workshops, initially for children aged 7 to 11, every Wednesday during the summer holidays from 30th July. We have plans for a Saturday morning art and craft club from September.” Please contact buzzybartandcraft@gmail.com for further details.

Suzi left more than her vote in the ballot box
Microbiologist Suzi Adams is a relieved woman her treasured gold ring went missing shortly after casting her vote at the Euro elections. For minutes after leaving Ellesmere Port’s temporary polling station in Willowdale Way, Mrs Adams realised that her late grandmother’s wedding ring was missing. A hurried search revealed that the treasured keepsake had not been left at home in Blackthorne Avenue, Whitby. But in a flash of inspiration Suzi rang to ask polling station officials if the ballot box could be opened and searched to see whether her ring had slipped off as she cast her vote. But Polling Station Inspector Trudie Odaka explained that under electoral regulations the box had to remain strictly sealed until it was opened later that night at the area count at Chester’s Northgate Arena. Trudie, a Senior Legal Manager, duly marked the outside of ballot box 153 ‘open with care – may contain elector’s ring’ – and warned officials at the Chester count of the situation. And when the box was finally opened under supervision some hours later, Suzi’s 70-yearold band of gold was discovered among the 400-plus ballot papers. Mrs Adams was due to go on holiday early the next day and had to wait weeks before she could be reunited with her ring – kept in a safe place by council staff. “The ring is slightly too big and because my fingers were cold my first thought was it could have slipped off anywhere” said Suzi. The polling station was really just a hopeful guess. “Naturally, the ring has great sentimental value. It means a great deal to me and I was really delighted to get it back when I returned from my holidays.” Added Suzi: “I would just like to thank everyone at the council who took so much trouble to find the ring and keep it safe until I could reclaim it.”

More monitoring of air pollution
Four organisations are combining to tackle to problem of intermittent air pollution in the area of Thornton-leMoors. Cheshire West and Chester’s Environmental Protection and Public Health teams, the Environment Agency, Public Health England and Essar are monitoring emissions of sulphur dioxide. News of the joint investigation was given at a meeting of the Ellesmere Port Air Quality Forum by CWAC’s Environmental Health Protection Practitioner, Ian Nadin.
Mr Nadin said that a monitoring station, established last June, in response to concerns expressed by local residents had shown that during particular climatic conditions sharp increases in sulphur dioxide are recorded, typically for periods between 15 minutes and two hours. A spokesperson for the Environment Agency – responsible for monitoring major installations said today: “We are treating this matter seriously and are reviewing the initial findings of the ongoing study.”
Another new business for struggling town centre Ellesmere Port’s town centre has welcomed another new business, as Chalice Media Studios opened its doors at 8 Cambridge Road. In another boost to the area, former drama teacher at West Cheshire College and local author of crime thriller ‘Splintered’ Laura Harris will offer creative writing courses, actor training and representation, filming-making and performance and production based skills from the Cambridge Road premises. Director of Chalice Media Studios, Laura Harris, said: “We plan to start running our Actor Training and Creative Writing classes from these premises and will continue to produce new writing, and re-invent classic works to be performed in and around Ellesmere Port. “Our latest full-scale creative endeavour is a roaring 1920’s adaption of Romeo and Juliet, set against a backdrop of the prohibition of alcohol, bootlegging and rise gangsters such as Al Capone. The current location of the performance is top secret but the dates will be August 28, 29 and 30 August.” The area around Whitby Road has recently seen a flourish of new businesses and creative enterprises choosing to locate there, including the Paperboat Art Gallery and FabLab Ellesmere Port. Alayne Harris; Tony Terry, FabLab; Chalice Media Studios Laura J Harris; Council’s Town centre Improvement Manager Jochem Hollestelle; Heather Pugh, Stanley Staff; David Harris.
