Creature comforts in the park Rivacre Country Park was the venue for the annual barbecue and evening bat walk. Visitors were able to explore the park’s woodland on the bat walk led by the council’s countryside rangers, learning more about the fascinating creatures and their habitats while they swooped above. Local member for Netherpool, Councillor Diane Roberts, said: “We are really lucky to have a fantastic Bright idea Flower baskets have been installed along Marina Drive to brighten up the area for local residents and visitors to Ellesmere Port town centre. Lucky 13 have the w Thirteen youngsters from Ellesmere Port were full of smiles after winning a creative writing competition. More than 350 schoolchildren from five schools put pen to paper in the contest as part of Cheshire West and Chester Council’s ‘SMILE’ campaign to attract new foster carers and adopters. The youngsters were asked to share their thoughts about what makes them smile in a short story or poem.
Jessica Weston of Sutton Green Primary School’s entry, titled ‘Inside a Smile’, was selected as overall winner, and there were 12 runners-up. The winning stories and poems have now been published in a booklet titled ‘What Makes Me Smile?’. The 13 youngsters attended a celebration event at Whitby Sports Club where they were presented with their awards by Devan Bailey of the Cheshire Phoenix Basketball Team. Devan, whose parents are foster carers, volunteered his time to help raise awareness of the need for more foster cares and adopters in West Cheshire. The schools that took part were Sutton Green, Cambridge Road, The Oaks, Rivacre Valley and Wolverham primary schools. The winners were chosen by a judging panel comprising foster carer Chris Peters, Anne Ainsworth of Ellesmere Port Library and local Councillors Ben Powell, Justin Madders and Pat Merrick. Councillor Powell said: “We were thrilled with the response to the competition. The standard was so high that choosing just 13 winning entries was not an easy task. “My congratulations go to Jessica and to each of the runners up. They should be very proud of themselves. “It is wonderful to read what makes them smile - things such as sunny days, pets, friends, going to school and where they live. But touchingly, the overwhelming subject is family. “Family is at the heart of our SMILE campaign. We need local carers for local children, and this competition is

playing a valuable role in raising awareness in the Ellesmere Port community. “In West Cheshire we have 470 children in care, but only 180 fostering households. We also have a shortage of adopters. “We want to spread the message that there is no such thing as a typical foster carer or adopter. The most important thing is that you can offer a secure, stable and caring environment for a child - either on a shortterm, long-term or permanent basis. “If you think you can make a difference to a child’s life, please take that first step and get in touch with our Fostering and Adoption Recruitment Team.” Ellesmere Port is the latest area in Cheshire West to take part in the SMILE schools competition. By taking part, pupils help to spread the fostering and adoption message to their
families and the wider community. Schools also help to raise awareness by displaying banners on their fencing and hosting the Council’s recruitment information events for people to find out more about becoming a foster carer or adopter. Further information is available at www. smileadoptionandfostering.co.uk. Alternatively, telephone the 24-hour hotline on 01244 972222 or text SMILE to 80010. Rainbow Colours in September

Gardening by Janet Heath
Early autumn is one of the most spectacular seasons for colour with hot reds, orange, yellow, blue and shades of pink to brighten our gardens. Top of the list of flowers are Dahlias, if you can keep the slugs at bay. They are superb for giving flamboyant flower shapes and colours and range from tall (2m ) to small (50cm) so there is one for all situations. They need a sunny place and moist but well drained soil so heavy clay and dry soils are out with loamy soils preferred. They grow from tubers which should be lifted in late autumn and the foliage cut off then stored in a cool dry place over winter. A less well know plant for sunny positions are Caryopteris clandonensis – a small delicate shrub (1m tall)
that will thrive in sunny well drained soil. Sandy soils are ideal but avoid heavy clay. They have small grey green leaves and clusters of light blue flowers in September. Another favourite are the Asters with many daisy flowers in shades of pink and lilac. The classic Aster Frikartii Monch has the lilac flowers over a period of weeks. Well drained but moist soil and sunny place is best for these perennials. Start harvesting apples and pears. Apples are ready when you lift the apple gently and the stalk breaks off easily. If you have to tug at the apple, it is not ripe and should be left on the tree. You can sow seeds of winter lettuce, lambs lettuce, land cress, rocket and spinach in early September for harvesting in winter and spring although the winter
lettuce is not ready to eat until spring. Cover with a cloche or fleece in cold weather. Lawns can be scarified in September which will remove mounds of moss and dead leaves – it’s amazing how much comes out! Then reseed bare areas or patch with turf. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Mount Pleasant Gardens at Kelsall are always worth visiting with formal and informal areas packed with a huge range of plants, trees, shrubs and ponds. Paths ramble down the terraces with sculptures set in the landscape. It is open on 6th and 7th September.

Bathroom
Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.
The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering. Owner Dave Sergison commented, ‘Customers will literally be able to
get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’
And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,
Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.
A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.
Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Oh, and by the way customers receive a freshly made cup of their favourite coffee, latte, cappuccino or espresso when they visit the showroom! Wirral Wetrooms really do appreciate being part of their community and like to participate in helping with Friends of Irby Library. music festival returns Events and Production Ltd, said: “Ellesmere Port is a town full of talent and passion and to be able to provide an outlet to show off all of this talent is quite simply a pleasure. “Ellesmere Port is in need of more exciting events to entice numerous people to its centre so that our contagious community spirit and pride can spread and draw more people to this vibrant town.” Aimed at transforming the heart of Ellesmere Port and perceptions about the
town the scheme is supported by the local council and other public bodies. Civic Square has recently been the focus of many successful events including Sport in the Port, the Giants Parade, Big Lunch, the Christmas Light switch on and the big Wheel. Community cafe opens its doors Whitby Road has welcomed another new business as Montague Café opens its doors. Run by local CIC Access2Training&Employment, the cafe offers healthy food and non-alcoholic drinks at affordable prices, in an environment that helps to bring people together promoting friendship and community spirit. Montague will provide training and work experience opportunities for young people looking to work in the catering industry and also has a stage and licence for musical events - creating a hub and podium for local talent. Officially opened by Andrew Miller MP, the event was also attended by local residents, Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Councillor Brian Jones; Executive Member for Localities, Councillor Lynn Riley and local ward Councillor Justin Madders. Mr Miller MP: “The Montague makes a very welcome addition to Whitby Road, I am pleased by the range of backers this project has received and I look forward to the Montague’s success.” Gary Williams, of CIC Access2Training&Employment, said: “Montague aims to ensure that everyone in the local area has the opportunity, ability and confidence to access a healthy and acceptable diet for themselves, their families and their communities. We do this by supporting work with and within low-income communities that address health inequalities and barriers to healthy and affordable food. ” Cheshire West and Chester Council launched a project in 2012 looking to target long-term vacant shops in the old high street of Whitby Road. The grant scheme aims to bring properties back into use, improve the appearance of the street, help increase footfall for the other shops, and support the regeneration of the wider area. Local Councillor, Justin Madders, said: “It is very encouraging to see this project come to fruition, bringing new life into the high street. I am very pleased that the money secured from Marks and Spencer’s is being put to such innovative use and I hope that the café will get plenty of use both day and night.”
