Willaston Memorial Hall gets a makeover Willaston Memorial Hall is officially back open for business, following a major internal restoration project. The restoration work, which took place over the summer, was made possible thanks to grants worth more than £20,000. Wirral residents were invited to celebrate the reopening with a ‘Best of British’ soup lunch, hosted by the trustees of Willaston Memorial Hall, in November. Built in the late 19th century, the hall is positioned

next to Willaston village green and is a hub for community events in the village, from pre-school play groups and Pilates classes, to country markets and guiding groups. The hall has long oozed charm, still boasting its original beams and decorative windows, but regular use had meant that the paintwork needed refreshing and soft furnishings were in need of replacement. Colin Jerrett, chairman of the committee of trustees, said: “We are very grateful to the funders and who have made these much-needed improvements possible. While remaining sympathetic to this historic building, these stylish yet practical improvements should ensure that the hall remains a much-used community asset for many years to come. “The hall is very much at the heart of the village, with a packed calendar of regular bookings and an increasing demand for special events, such as weddings and local music performances. So far, the response to the improvements from residents has been overwhelmingly positive.” The improvements include new paintwork, refurbishment of the wooden floor, energy efficient lighting and heating, new soft furnishing, better sound system and CCTV. The work was made possible thanks to WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund (£13,200), The Big Lottery Fund (£8,500) and the support of Mark and Anita Mitchell and Zoom Zoom Trust. A group of volunteers are once more hosting Neston Community Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day at the United Reformed Church Hall on Parkgate Road in Neston. They can cater for up to 40 people. The lunch is provided free of charge, transport can be arranged. Last year they hosted 30 people. There are plenty of volunteers now and the organisers are looking for donations of either money or food to help with costs. Victorian Christmas returns to Neston Neston Victorian Christmas Festival is set to return for its second year on Saturday 2nd December 2017. The one-day event will take place on the Market Square and Town Hall from 12noon-6pm, with the lights switched on at 5pm. The event is organised by Neston Town Council working in partnership with Neston Rotary Club and Neston & District Churches Together. Festival goers will be treated to a full programme of Victorian-themed Christmas entertainment to include brass bands, choirs, dancers, bag-pipers as well as local community groups and schools. The Christmas market will be a blend of over 50 stalls including gifts, arts, crafts and festive food. Children will be able to visit Father Christmas in his grotto. Steampunk stalls and demonstrations, combining Victorian England with modern technologies to re-imagine design, art and fashion, will see a new dimension to this year’s proceedings. Claire Evans, from Neston Town Council, said: “Last year’s festival was hailed a ‘Triumph of Community Celebration’ by Neston’s Town Mayor at the time. You couldn’t fail to be cheered by the warmth and congeniality at the heart of our town. This year we’ve added some new elements; it’s a festival that really does offer something for everyone.” The festival is free to enter and there is free parking in and around the town.

CRIMEFILE Crimes reported to Neston police include: Hadlow Lane – An electric plane and router were stolen from a van. Hawthorn Road – A house was broken into and the keys to a new red Mini were taken and used to steal the car which was returned later with damage. Springcroft – Thieves broke in and took two sets of car keys. A Ford Ranger was moved from outside the garage and parked further along road so that they could steal a black Nissan GTR from the garage. Raby Park Road – A break-in was reported at the cabin on the old Neston High School site.

Henley Road – Two males pulled up to rear of the Lady Hamilton pub and then loaded a cooker into the van. Meadow Lane, Willaston – The gas meter was stolen from outside a house under renovation. Bull Hill – A green Carrera Vanquish mountain bike was stolen from a shed. Liverpool Road – Two drunken males damaged a garage door. Buggen Lane – A stone was thrown through the window by group of youths. Shakespeare Road – A bedroom window was pulled open in an unsuccessful attempt to gain entry.

Young actors win again Award-winning InterACT Youth Theatre added another award to its collection this year. At the National Drama Festival Association All Winners’ British Final the group won the Nan Nuttall Memorial Award, which recognised the contribution of the group to youth engagement. Interact had already won awards at the Leverhulme Drama Festival earlier in the year. The group has again been selected for National Theatre Connections 2018 and they have chosen a play called ‘The Blue Electric Wind’ by Brad Birch. This will be performed in March in Neston and then will transfer to The Lowry in May. The group will also enter their paly in the Leverhulme Drama Festival in April to see fi the can repeat their successes. New members are always welcome and scholarships are available. Parkgate pupilsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; winter wonderland The children at Parkgate Primary School had a fabulous day learning through the natural environment, either on their school grounds or down on Parkgate front. Dressed for the winter weather, the children and staff embarked on many activities. The reception class made skeletons for their bodies; year one sketched Mostyn House; year two sorted and classified natural materials; year three made and solved their own addition word problems using chalk; year four used Ipads to create I-movies about the different habitats; year five acted out part of the story of King Kong using the outside as a stage and year six created flood defences for a river. 16 To advertise call 01244 350398

St Winnies pupils go purple The children from the St Winefride’s Rotakids Club and Mrs Jeacock were joined by Prof David Brigden to plant some purple crocus outside the school entrance as part of Rotary’s Purple4Polio appeal. The purple crocus is a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to stop polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunised. By planting purple crocus, Rotakids want to raise awareness and funds to help finish the job. Later in the year, St Winefride’s will be holding a Purple Fundraising Day, when the children are invited to come into school wearing anything purple, with all money raised going towards the Purple4Polio appeal. This means that the team will be representing the Ellesmere Port, Neston and Frodsham areas at the Cheshire Games in Crewe in March. This year’s final was particularly exciting, although not for the parents and teacher spectators, as the final was decided by a ‘one on one’ penalty shoot out. Well done to Tom Jones for saving all the penalties and scoring the winning goal!

Jo on a fund-raising mission after mum’s dementia battle The agony of seeing her elderly mum suffer with dementia has inspired Jo Curtis to devote herself to raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. Jo Curtis, who lives in Little Neston, works full time while being a carer for her 81-year-old mum who lives with her. Jo said: “It is heart-breaking to see my lovely vibrant mum slip away day by day and it is because of this I have decided to take up a challenge at work to be a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society for the next 12 months.” Thus far she has completed a 10-mile memory walk with a group of local Neston friends and work colleagues which raised £3,766, and three quiz nights netted £200. Two other events are scheduled for December: a Rock n Roll Bingo night on Monday 4th December and a big fundraising event on Saturday 9th December with a live salsa band, dancers, karaoke, raffle and an auction. Both are being held at the Lady Hamilton Pub on Henley Road, Little Neston. Jo added: “I have been reaching out to all local businesses in the surrounding areas to request donations or pledges of a gift, or voucher to raffle or auction. We are looking for prizes such as some vouchers for afternoon tea, a meal for two or food, booze, sweet hampers or anything you would like to donate to help us raise money for this very worthy cause. New womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mental health support group A new mental health support group for Neston women has now opened. Aimed at women who experience mental health problems and/or social isolation, All About Women is run by women who themselves have, or have had, experience of mental ill health. Weekly meetings take place at the Neston Methodist Church Community Centre at the junction of Park St and Liverpool Road (near the High Street) on Thursday evenings from 7 - 9pm. (Cars can be parked in the GP Surgery car park opposite) The primary aim of the group is to give the women the opportunity to share their feelings with a group of like-minded women in a friendly, non-judgemental and safe environment, help them make new friends and encourage them to move forward in their lives. As the group progresses, the hope is to arrange outings and day trips to places of interest in the local area and further afield. Referrals will be accepted from GPs, social workers, community psychiatric nurses, and any other healthcare professionals who have clients/patients who they feel will benefit from this group, but importantly women can self- refer. Anything discussed in the group is confidential, unless the women, themselves, wish to discuss their problems outside of the group. IS BACK PAIN HOLDING ACCORDING to a recent report carried out by The British Pain Society there are ten million chronic pain sufferers in Britain alone which affect not only their social life but interferes with their working life. Back pain costs the UK billions of pounds in health bills, loss of earnings and lost productivity. However many people in the UK who are unable to work due to back pain are not covered by this or by allowances. Instead these sufferers are reliant on their partner or early retirement. Following a recent survey British businesses lose an estimated 4.9 million days from employee absence due to work related back pain. The North East suffers than most, with 2 people every hundred having to cope with the condition. As a result, each affected employee takes 19 days of work which in turn puts the business at stake. GPs tend to refer patients to chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists and in some cases suggest surgery. In recent studies carried out by the NHS there has been a significant increase in teenagers suffering with back pain. This age group costs the NHS nearly £4billion per year alone working out at an average of

£8,000 per teenager. Despite this the number of back pain sufferers is still prominent with treatment showing no guarantee of success. Bowen Therapy is an alternative therapy which has slowly but surely been sweeping the nation over the last 20 years.

RELIEF The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free noninvasive complementary therapy which was invented in Australia and introduced to the UK in the 1990’s. Bowen Therapy has a particularly strong record of success in the treatment of back pain. A national study, carried out by The Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA), showed that 95 per cent of back pain sufferers experienced either complete relief or a marked improvement, after a series of no more than three Bowen treatments. It prides itself on being able to trigger the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the changes it requires. With primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual. No hard-tissue

manipulation or force is needed or used. Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process. Bowen is generally pleasant to receive, each session lasting 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the age of the client and the nature of their condition. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment. Short-term (acute) injury may be resolved in one to three Bowen treatments, while long-standing (chronic) conditions may require longer.

A gap of five to ten days is recommended between Bowen sessions; so that the body can process the subtle information it has been given. Once the healing process is underway, the treatment would have taken the relief off your back meaning you can carry out activities in and outside of the workplace which you had on hold. As well as back pain Bowen Therapy also may help with a host of other health issues such as: frozen shoulders, sports injuries, whiplash, migraine, hay fever, asthma, IBS, fertility matters to name but a few.
