Parkgate community spirit ‘cleans for the Queen’ TWENTY SEVEN volunteers braved the elements to set about giving Parkgate a spring clean. Suitably clad against the cold breeze off the marsh, they met in the grounds of St Thomas’s Church on Mostyn Square, Parkgate. All had responded to the invitation to join the Parkgate Society Community Spirit ‘Clean for the Queen’ event. A number headed for the Marsh to tidy the area between the seawall and the first gulley. The rest of the team split into pairs and headed off to the Wirral Way, Park Fields, Wood Lane, Boathouse Lane and the Ropewalk park area. The car parks on Station Road, Mostyn Square and the Old Baths were targeted. The Lanes and Weints leading off the Parade were also visited by the volunteers. After two hours of litter picking 62 bags had been filled and left for CWAC Street Scene staff to collect and dispose of. The volunteers were blessed with good weather and all agreed that they felt better for being out early on the Saturday morning getting some exercise and plenty of fresh air. The event ended with chips and a hot drink supplied to the volunteers by Neil of the Parkgate Fish and Chips. The Community Spirit organisers wish to thank all those who attended the event, Neil and Helen the owners of the Parkgate Fish and Chips, URENCO, who sponsored the bespoke Hi Visibility Waistcoats worn by the volunteers and also Street Scene for the loan of the equipment used and also for collecting the filled green bags left at the various pick up points. The ‘Clean for the Queen’ event in Parkgate will be followed by more events over the coming year and if you wish to join us, or would just like more details please contact David Johnson at: community@parkgatesociety.co.uk 6 To advertise call 01244 350398

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Neston, Parkgate, Little Neston, Burton and Ness

& Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LEGAL MATTERS Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors

The importance of having a Will AND keeping it up to date DIFFERENT organisations carry out surveys for different purposes, and a popular one with some charities is how many adults have not made a Will. The figure remains consistently around the 40% mark. Based on the 2011 census, this would mean approximately 20 million adults in the UK do not have a Will in place. Of course it also means around 60% do have a Will in place…. or do they? Here at Campion Solicitors we are very keen to encourage you to make a Will, and of equal importance is to keep it up to date. This month we thought a couple of real life examples might stir you into action to either make a Will or update the one you have.

‘I’LL GET AROUND TO IT’ An elderly local woman passed away. She had never married and never had children but was in touch with a couple of cousins living nearby, as well as her friends and neighbours, and she was an active supporter of local charities. It was known there was no Will, and she had often said ‘I’ll get around to it’. The closest cousin appointed a solicitor to help because when there is no Will, the estate is referred to as ‘intestate’ and there are rules and procedures that have to be followed. There was the cousin who lived nearby, another in Lancashire and another relative in North Wales. The cousins thought it was just a case of verifying the family connections and then distributing the estate according to the rules. To correctly confirm the entitlement under intestacy, it was necessary to undertake some family research. A few months later, a total of 45 verified entitled ‘blood’ relatives had been identified, some of whom were in the US, Africa, Europe and Australia, and most never knew the lady had even existed, and most didn’t know each other. Each of the proven relatives received a part of the estate. It was obvious this was not what the deceased would have wanted, but if there is no will, then this is what happens. There was also beneficiary number 46: H.M. Government; the single largest beneficiary by way of the inheritance tax that had to be paid.

‘I HAVE A WILL’ A Widow with no children made a Will leaving a specific legacy (an actual amount of money) to ‘my dear friend’ and the residue (the rest of the estate) to her brother with no alternative beneficiary. (The brother was divorced and estranged from his ex-wife and children.) When the Will was written, the Widow was living in rented property on modest means and so the legacy to the friend represented around half of her estate. The brother predeceased leaving his estate to the Widow, and so on her death, the friend received the legacy, but the residue was distributed as per the rules of intestacy to the brother’s estranged children. The Will was written in 1969, so the ‘dear friend’ received the legacy of £500, and the estranged children received around £400,000.

Please make a Will AND keep it up to date.

Neston Female Society to parade on Ladies Walk FOR the first time in its history, the traditional walk organised by Neston Female Society will utilise the road named in its honour. Ladies Walk in Neston was created when the road configuration at the top of Liverpool Road was altered in the 1990s. It was named after the annual Neston Female Society parade known colloquially as ‘Ladies Walk’ or ‘Ladies Club’ or even ‘Ladies Day’. In the most recent past, the parade has started from the Malt Shovel pub car park in Liverpool Road. Now, organisers are creating a new tradition by altering the route so that it begins from Market Square, with walkers proceeding onto Ladies Walk going northwards to join Liverpool Road, turning left and proceeding on to the High Street. Honorary Secretary of the

Female Society, Martin Barker, explained: “There are two compelling reasons to make this change. Firstly, it brings the start of the parade right into the heart of the town centre, but secondly and more importantly, it means that for the first time the procession will use Ladies Walk itself.” In fact, the change of gathering place brings the event almost full circle, as it is as close as you can now get to where the original Neston Female Society walkers would have met over 200 years ago. Then, the procession would begin

Stage group caught on camera! Neston’s Little Actors Theatre Company has received £250 to buy a video camera for the children’s performing arts groups in Neston CH64. The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation which offers grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities. It will be used to record the work of InterACT Youth Theatre, whose play ‘It Snows’ was performed at Neston Town Hall in March. A video will then be sent to the National Theatre. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

from the National Schools, which stood where the Town Hall is now located. Subsequently, the National Schools moved to Liverpool Road (‘Top School’), so the gathering place for the walk moved with it, from around 1860, eventually shifting to the Malt Shovel when the National Schools was closed and developed into housing in the ‘90s. This year’s Neston Ladies Club Day will take place on Thursday 2nd June. Walkers to gather in the Market Square from 1.30pm, setting off at 2.30pm. There will be a programme of entertainment around the procession, town centre roads will be closed for the afternoon and the traditional funfair will be in place on the Chester Road Car Park. More information, including where to obtain children’s wristbands, will be circulated soon. Councillors’ surgery Cheshire West & Chester Councillors Louise Gittins and Andy Williams hold a surgery on the third Saturday of each month at Neston Town Hall. All welcome. The next one is on Saturday 16th April, from 10am-12noon.

Mother, Baby and Bowen Therapy During pregnancy Bowen Therapy has a very important role to play in the health care of women both during and after pregnancy. The Bowen Technique is integral for Mothers-To-Be as it is one of the only therapies that can be performed in its entirety, being very gentle, with the patient sitting down or lying on their side, whilst remaining clothed. Bowen Therapy can treat all common pregnancy pains from morning sickness and tiredness to physical pain such as back ache and sciatica and assist with digestive problems as well as psychological and emotional well-being. For new mothers Bowen is helpful in speeding recovery after birth. Treatment focuses on encouraging the uterus to contract and helping the pelvis to realign. The sooner after labour the mother comes for treatment, the more effective Bowen therapy will be. For babies Birth is one of the most traumatic processes a child will go through and Bowen Therapy can be given within days of birth. Bowen can be extremely effective in treating colic, digestive problems, chest infections and restlessness as it is gentle enough to be used on the most delicate of babies. As babies change so fast often the results can be seen during the course of the session. Bowen is generally pleasant to receive each session lasting 30 to 60 minutes. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during treatment. For more information on Bowen Therapy refer to Wirral Bowen Therapy above and for other Bowen Therapy Professional Association members in your area visit www.bowen-therapy.co.uk 160844 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.nestonlocal.com or call 561 7173

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Getting Crafty at Bishop Wilson Children who attend the craft club at Bishop Wilson CE Primary School, Burton, were busy this half-term designing and making cushions for their mums for Mother’s Day. They are currently making decoupage keep-safe boxes and designing a piece of furniture in decoupage for display within school.

Costume drama at Burton! The children and staff at Bishop Wilson School, in Burton, made a huge effort for World Book Day, coming to school dressed as book characters. The children from Reception to Year 6 were also involved in a book scavenger hunt. Prizes were awarded to one child from each year group for the most imaginative costume.

Air cadets celebrate Neston Air Cadets celebrated another year packed with sports, adventure training, courses, camps and much more, at their annual dining-in which took place at Thornton Hall. The guest speaker, John Thelwell, a triathlete, gave a spectacular speech on his triumphs and the training that leads up to such events.

Muddy marvels Neston Air Cadets braved the elements and beat the mountains of mud in the recent Inter Squadron Cross Country Competition that took place at Stadt Moers Park, Whiston. Many medals were won and five cadets reached the next level, with three actually taking part in the Inter Wing Event held at RAF Cosford. Cpl Powell was chosen to go on even further, to represent Wales & West Region in the Inter Region competition.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

COLOURFUL SPRING

APRIL is the month when plants really get going and I would like to start by looking at climbers, in particular Clematis. Spring gives a number of varieties to consider. Clematis armandii with larger, white slightly scented flowers is an evergreen climber which will flower even in darker corners of the garden. It needs a sheltered spot with moist well drained soil to do best and bear in mind it will cover a large area. I love Clematis alpina with small hanging bells of flowers in blue, white and pink. Clematis macropetala is particularly beautiful with delicate double flowers and does not get as woody as the alpina varieties. Prune just after flowering by cutting back a little if they get too large. Small perennials such as Allysum and Aubretia provide early season colour and another attractive alpine flower are Auriculas. Similar in size to Primroses they have velvety flowers in a wide range of colours. Very good for moist well drained soil in sun and dislike wet soil. If you have a woodland edge site with moist well drained soil try the stunning Dicentra spectabilis. It has arching stems with white or pink and white hanging flowers. It does die down later in the season but is lovely for a woodland garden. Plant alongside Epimedium a low growing perennial with glossy heart shaped leaves. In early spring they have new bronzy leaves and pale yellow or pink flowers depending on variety. Plant hardy annuals such as sunflowers, nasturtiums and marigolds out in the garden, where they are to flower. If the weather is mild later in April, sow seeds of lettuce, carrots and radishes outside. Make sure roses are fed and look out for aphids on new growth. Spray with a solution of washing up liquid to keep them at bay. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Briarfield near Burton on the Wirral is open on 24th April and has a couple of acres of gardens with alpines, bulbs and herbaceous borders with plants for sale.

Supporting Fairtrade Fortnight The Neston Fairtrade Town Steering Group held a ‘Sit Down for Breakfast, Stand up for Fairtrade’ event at Neston Town Hall on 5th March to highlight the difference people can make to the lives of producers by buying Fairtrade goods. Free Fairtrade refreshments and Fairtrade samples were enjoyed and £200 of purchases were made from the Traidcraft and ‘And Albert’ stalls. Over 200 people, including MP Justin Madders and Neston Town Mayor Mike Shipman, supported the event which was held in conjunction with the launch of the Arts @ Neston Town Hall Market together with the regular Farmers and Foodmakers Market. Ness and Little Neston WI We have had a really good start to the year despite the miserable wet weather. Gavin Hunter presented a virtual tour of the ‘Lost Halls and Mansions of Wirral’. Theatre trips to see ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ were hugely enjoyable, as was the behind the scenes tour of the Liverpool Playhouse. Luckily the weather did not prevent the walk around Chester City Walls and another from West Kirby, pub lunches being an added attraction. Brian Hallworth gave atalk about “Easter Folk” taking us back to pagan times. There are many treats in store for April, theatre visits, coach outings and the Birthday Dinner, as well as a First Aid afternoon and the Craft, Poetry and Book clubs will meet as usual. 32 To advertise call 01244 350398

Course could be a life saver The children in Years 5 & 6 at Bishop Wilson Primary School, Burton, undertook a ‘First Aid in a Day’ training course run by St John’s Ambulance and have received Fire Safety Training from Cheshire Fire Brigade. They were taught about resuscitation and how to deal with choking as well as dealing with cuts, grazes and broken bones and when to phone for the emergency services. The Fire Safety Training taught the children how to evacuate a building safely and the dangers of fire. As part of the training all the children entered a ‘smoke tent’ to demonstrate what it would be like to be in a smoke-filled room.
