Royal welcome for Neston cadets Two cadets from 2375 Neston Air Cadets took park in Armed Forces Day celebration in Liverpool. Sergeant Kieran Eeles and Corporal Ben Turnbull were able to walk around the armed forces villages after the parade and took the chance to meet Prince Edward. Sergeant Eeles said HRH was “very interested in learning about their participation in Duke of Edinburgh awards and the challenges that they faced on their expeditions”.

Ewan steps up for Burton swimmers The swimming team from Bishop Wilson CE Primary School, Burton, took part in the Finalists Gala at Europa Pools in June. It was an exciting evening as the youngest team member, Ewan, had to stand in for a swimmer who was unable to compete at the last minute. He swam four races gaining valuable points for the team. The team finished in 8th place overall and were thrilled with their achievement.

Sun shines on Neston Village Fair It was another gloriously sunny afternoon in early July for the annual Neston Village Fair. The big crowd enjoyed performances by local primary schools, Hip â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;nâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Harmony choir, Neston Strummers and Little Actors Theatre, along with lots of stalls and classic cars. NESS AND LITTLE NESTON WI To celebrate the Queen’s Saphire Anniversary we held a Royal tea and quiz in the Glasshouse at Burton Manor, and we visited a beautiful garden in Ness . Three walks based around Chester , the Walls , Country Park and along the river from Eccleston. A coach trip to Norton Priory and the enchanting gardens at Arley Hall was enjoyed by all . The theatre group supported the Neston Players production of “Bette and Joan “ and went to the Empire to see “ Ghost “. Visits to Liverpool Nordic Church and the Western Approaches Museum were really interesting and informative. Cathy Roberts told us of her Tug Boat adventures rebuilding her vintage boat. June had begun with a meal at 1 Mostyn Square, Parkgate and finished with a fabulous Afternoon Tea at Burton with tasty sandwiches and equisite scones and cakes, and a very entertaining look back at clothes from the 1920 ‘s given by June Corner . The craft , book and poetry groups met as usual . We meet at St Michael’s Church , on the first Tuesday of the month, and visiors are welcome

Friends of West Vale Park Family Fun Day Sunday 6th August 1-4pm Please come along to our 7th annual event which will be held on West Vale Park, Neston on Sunday 6th August between 1 and 4pm. There will be a climbing wall again as this proved so popular last year and also a mobile caving experience. Children from 3 years old to adults can don a helmet and explore 25 metres of artificial tunnels. The traction engine ride will be back again and the small animal workshop to meet some unusual creatures. There will also be some taster sessions of Tai Chi during the afternoon so come along and see if you fancy joining a local group. In between these will be some races for smaller children and a craft table for those who love arty activities. Try your hand at the coconut shy and the curling game or tin can alley. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

SUMMER COLOUR August usually bring the late flowering perennials such as Japanese Anemone. As we have had a mild winter and dry spring into early summer, some plants are flowering almost a month early. So I am going to suggest plants that usually flower in August but may be going over this year! Not many shrubs flower in late summer but one that will give white flowers is Eucryphia x nymansensis Nymansay. A bit of a mouthful to say, but if you have space (it will achieve 10m by 4m in time), a sheltered spot and soil that is slightly acidic it will flower over a long period with many pure white flowers as can be seen from the photo. There are good examples on the Wirral where there is a maritime climate. Perennials that flower in August include Actaea Brunette which has dark purple foliage and then sends up tall spires of white bottlebrush flowers. Plant it next to glossy green leaves to show the foliage. It likes a moisture retentive soil and flower stems will soar to 2m in height. If you plant yellow Crocosmia Sulphurea and Kniphofia Little Maid in front of the Actaea, the yellow flowers will show well against the dark foliage. All prefer a moisture retentive soil. Clematis flowering in August will give colour if grown through a shrub that flowered earlier in the year. Clematis viticella varieties such Etoile Violette with rich dark blue flowers will do well in a shady spot. For a larger more robust plant try Clematis tangutica with yellow pixie hat shaped flowers in abundance. Jobs to do in the garden include planting daffodils, crocus and chionodoxa bulbs. Dead head roses and buddleia flowers to keep the plants looking good. Prune evergreens in August but not later as new growth is more likely to be damaged by frost. Pinch out the tops of runner beans and tomato plants to encourage production of beans and tomatoes. Keep them well watered in dry weather. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Woodfall’s wonderful wheels All 63 Year 5 children at Woodfall Primary and Nursery School took part in the annual Bikeability cycle training programme. Two of the children were riding adapted cycles, a hand bike and a tricycle, making the week accessible to all. With the sun shining throughout the four days they learnt the basics of balance and control on the school playground, to venturing out on to the roads near to school to prepare for on-road cycling. They practised a number of skills including passing parked vehicles, recognising typical hazards, knowing where to ride on the road and letting others know their intentions.

Alfie’s street dance wows the judges Twelve fabulous acts made it through to the final of Woodfall’s Got Talent with pupils playing instruments, magic and singing. The eventual winners chosen by the rest of the pupils were Alfie with his Street/Hip-hop dance routine, who came first, Nell with her Acro-dance (runner-up) and Sam playing the Piano (third).

Slimmers donate bundles of clothes for Cancer Research UK Generous slimmers in Neston have been donating the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw in support of Cancer Research UK. The Wednesday Neston British Legion & Monday Little Neston Methodist Church Slimming World groups have collected 105 bags of the clothes, shoes and accessories from members who slimmed out of their old wardrobes and feel confident they’ll never need their ‘before’ clothes again. With each bag worth around £25 to the charity, slimmers in Neston have raised around £2,625.00 for the charity.

Neston nuisance is banned A criminal has been banned from large parts of Neston. Calvin Lewis, 20, formerly of Bridge Court, Neston, was convicted of assault and possession of a knife in a public place. During the hearing Lewis was also handed a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) lasting three and a half years. It prevents him from entering a large area of Neston for the full duration of his order. The order also prevents him from behaving in an anti-social manner, using foul, abusive offensive or threatening behaviour towards any person in England in Wales. Lewis is also banned from associating with a number of named people in any public place. PC Graeme Morrison said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lewis has been causing issues in Neston for more than three years and this was having a significant impact on the local community. This Criminal Behaviour Order aims to prevent further issues - making Neston a better place to live, work and visit. I hope that it reassures local people that we take issues such as this very seriously and will do everything we can to put a stop to this sort of behaviour. If Lewis breaches his Criminal Behaviour Order he will face going back to prison.â&#x20AC;?

Rural crime causes concern Thieves stole a red Isuzu Trooper from a rural property in Mill Lane, Ness, and drove it through a fence and over rough land to escape. l A large amount of equipment was stolen from a garage in Mudhouse Lane, Burton. The thieves got away with a Specialized Rock Hopper Bike, Trek Fuel EX8 Bike, fishing tackle, Makita chainsaw, Stihl chainsaw and chains, Stihl hedge cutter, crowbars, wheel set for bikes. l A heavy concrete planter was stolen from outside an address in Ness recently. The heavy item is about 2ft in height, painted white and contained a central miniature privet hedge surrounded by blue and white flowers. l Thieves got away with Honda, Suzuki and Ram quad bikes from a barn in Puddington. l A Dewalt bench saw and Stihl petrol grinder were stolen from a Vauxhall Vivaro in Earle Drive. l A handbag was taken from a Hyundai and a purse was stolen from a Ford Focus at the Boathouse car park.

Station kiosk goes off for restoration The red telephone kiosk that has stood on the platform of Hadlow Road Station for many years has been removed and transported to Norfolk for a full refurbishment at a cost of over £4,500. This money was raised by Friends of Hadlow Road Station (FHRS) through various successful grant applications over the last two years. The restoration work will be undertaken over the next couple of months and the kiosk will be returned to Hadlow Road Station in a pristine condition and put back in the same location. A full set of photographs will be provided to FHRS at each stage of the restoration along with other photographs and videos. These will form part of the regularly updated Audio Visual material that will be displayed on the monitor that will be fitted to the wall of the waiting room shortly. l While Cheshire West & Chester Council (CWaC) are renting out the Station Master’s House for a commercial café at Hadlow Road Station it is business as usual for the community popup café provided by Friends of Hadlow Road Station (FHRS) volunteers. It will continue to be open every other Sunday in the summer months through volunteers who provide their time free of charge and all profits are used to enhance the local environment at the station. The commercial café operated from the Station Master’s House is totally independent from the FHRS pop-up community café. The Friends’ café will be open on 13th & 27th August; from 10:30am to 1.30pm.

Neston Riverside WI Neston Riverside WI had a fun day out in Delamere Forest trying out the Segway Experience at Go Ape. Despite the drizzly rain and their initial trepidation they all had a really good time and segwayed confidently through the forest and round the lake.
