Wirral Wetrooms really do appreciate being part of their community and like to participate in helping with Friends of Irby Library. Their latest venture, I was informed, is a sponsored charity parachute jump, which seven of the team will be undertaking to raise money for the Catterbridge Cancer Charity. Donations can be made via facebook Justgiving.com/Wirral Wetrooms Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.

The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering. Owner Dave Sergison commented, ‘Customers will literally be able to

get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’

And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.

More improvements at Hadlow Road

you can easily upgrade your existing loo. They all include an oscillating shower with forward and backwards movement, air purification and a warm air dryer.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

Hadlow Road Station entertained many hundreds of children at the Santa Grotto despite the heavy snow in December. The Friends of Hadlow Road Station have received a £2,000 grant from the Postcode lottery trust for refurbishing the existing railway track. Improvements include fitting seats on the opposite (South) platform near to the existing old shelter, refurbishing the luggage trolley, cleaning and painting the signal, connecting Wirral Wetrooms specialise in DESIGN, the signal to the lever in the signal box so it worksWE and fixing thebespoke audio-visual unitand to the wetrooms bathrooms SUPPLY, FITStation. waiting room wall that will show short films of Hadlow Road & INSTALL The next openings of the pop-up café are Sundays 28th January, 25th February and JUST CALL... 25th March, 10.30am-1.30pm.

The Geberit AquaClean range is comfortable and stylish too. And with a model to suit every style of home, it would make a perfect addition to your new spa-like bathroom. Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply. Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?

Hot off the press! The Mayor of Neston, Cllr Pat Kynaston joined Class 4 at Parkgate Primary School to receive hot off the presses the first copy of their class newspaper, Jaguar Local, which they have been working on over the past few weeks. In it they have interviewed each other and the head teacher and school cook about the things important to them, taken photographs, created adverts for school clubs and even come up with an entertainment’s section. Class teacher, Mrs Jazmin Rashid said the project really engrossed the children. “All the ideas and content came from them and everyone of the 26 boys and girls contributed to the newspaper. Every class has a name and we are The Jaguars so they were keen that the name was reflected in the title. I couldn’t be more proud of them,” she said.

Charity founder g A NESTON woman who set up a children’s charity has been given an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

a short holiday to the Arctic Circle in Lapland to meet Father Christmas.

Karen Jones, chairman of Northern Lights, has been recognised for her services to children with life limiting illnesses in the North West and North Wales. Over three decades Karen has continually fundraised for the Northern Lights after the charity was set up in 1987 in memory of her friend, and co-committee member, Alan Johnson’s son, Christopher, lost his battle for life at the age of five after suffering with a brain tumour. Every December, the charity takes a group of children, aged between six and 11, on

Karen has devoted her life to raising as much money as possible so that each year as many children as possible can enjoy a brief respite from their day-to-day struggles to visit the real Father Christmas and enjoy a first-class holiday along the way. She is completely selfless in her approach putting the work of the charity before all else. The time and attention to detail to make these trips happen cannot be underestimated but Karen continues to work tirelessly and relentlessly in fulfilling the charity’s aims.

SHOCK Karen, who has been chairman for over 20 years, said: “I was shocked to receive a letter from the Cabinet Office in November, which seemed to suggest that I was getting an MBE. I said nothing until the Honours List became public and I still can’t believe that I have been singled out. I am proud to be a part of such an amazing charity and delighted to have been recognised in this way.” Karen said that receiving the honour as a representative of the charity was a huge privilege: “Wow, what an amazing way to end our 30th Anniversary year. I am surprised and delighted to have been awarded an MBE and feel very honoured to receive it. I hope that having these three letters after my name will add weight to our fundraising efforts and we continue to raise money for these wonderful holidays of a life-time.

given MBE “Being Chairman of Northern Lights is a big part of my life, and raising money for children with life-limiting illnesses is very important to me. I wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for the support of my fellow volunteers at Northern Lights and within the local community, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all.”

DISNEYLAND 2017 was the charity’s 30th Anniversary and an additional trip to Disneyland in Paris was organised allowing 30 children in total to be taken away in this special anniversary year. The charity had never previously taken

children with mobility problems away before, due to the limiting conditions in Lapland, so visiting Disneyland Paris during the Christmas celebrations enabled an additional 10 children to be taken on a trip. The charity hopes to repeat this trip again in future years opening up opportunities to provide more deserving children with magical experiences. Now, to top off their thirty-year celebration, the charity has just achieved the magic milestone of raising £1 million during their 30 years of fundraising and have taken over 500 children on these wonderful holidays of a lifetime.

The way we were Parkgate

Above: A 1930s scene outside Leeman’s garage, on the Parade, Parkgate. The business, which was originally in Station Road, moved there in the 1920s until 1957. Regent Oil bought the property in that year and the garage was run firstly by Gerrard Motors and later by Bowmans. The convalescent home next door (pictured below) was demolished in the 1950s when this area became part of the garage car park. In the mid 1980s the garage site was sold and warden-assisted flats were built there. The convalescent home, which opened in 1882, is pictured here in 1915. During the First World War it was used as a Red Cross hospital. The buiding in the background was originally a single residence dating from the 18th century and now forms two houses, Overdee and Greywalls. l Pictures taken from the book Yesterday’s Wirral, by Ian Boumphrey. The book can be bought from a number of local shops or by writing to Ian at The Nook, 7 Acrefield Road, Prenton CH42 8LD, by phone on 608 7611 or by email at ian@yesterdayswirral. co.uk. Applying to the Court of Protection Jackie Campion gives an insight into the Court of Protection Mental capacity is necessary for a person to make legally enforceable decisions. If someone you love lacks the mental capacity to look after their own financial affairs, an application to the Court of Protection may be required unless a Lasting Power of Attorney has already been created. The Court of Protection makes decisions and appoints deputies to protect the interests of people who lack the capacity to do so for themselves. This includes people with learning difficulties, brain injuries or dementia. Anyone who has an interest in the wellbeing of the person who lacks mental capacity can apply to be a Deputy. However, it is a complicated process and there are strict rules on who should be served with the application and who can then be appointed as a deputy. The Court of Protection can deal with the following areas:

FINANCES: A deputy can administer finances and give authority to sell or buy assets. In certain cases applications can be dealt with on an urgent basis. The application to the court will include a medical certificate confirming incapacity along with details of the assets, affairs and circumstances of the individual. A copy of the application must be served on the person concerned. They have the right to object. Once appointed, the deputy works within the powers granted by the court and must make an annual account to the Office of the Public Guardian. PERSONAL WELFARE: This can include some of the most profound issues a court will ever have to deal with such as whether invasive medical treatment should be given or withheld. Even if the only question relates to the choice of care home or whether someone can go on holiday, an application may be required. At Campion Solicitors we will give you a clear advice and details of a fixed fee. All our initial interviews are free and without obligation to enable you to then make an informed decision on how to proceed.

Hayley’s health and fitness

Will a personal trainer really help me get to where I want to be? The answer is yes if you get the right one! Think of a trainer as your best friend, your worst enemy, your councillor, your motivational speaker, the person you go to when you are about to give in and someone you will be spending a lot of time with!

Ask for a taster session if you don’t know the person, its important you gel! You will be spending a lot of time with your trainer so make sure you are on the same wave length, so you don’t dread your sessions!

Therefore it’s vital you pick someone you get along with.

Be realistic no matter how good of a trainer you get if you’re not working hard outside your training hours you won’t get results, fact! Don’t expect a few sessions in to have a six pack if you’re out every weekend drinking, you get out what you put in,

Your first decision is Male or Female, males firstly don’t be put off by having a female as your trainer. Don’t for one minute think you will be let off lightly or thing will be easier if you get a female as this is NOT the case. As for men training women, a good trainer will work through what you need to work on and devise a plan that will suit you. So it shouldn’t be unachievable and although you will be sore after your first few sessions, don’t feel like guys are just out to ‘beast you’ (the none technical term for working you too hard that you won’t be able to walk’!)

TIME, EFFORT, COMMITMENT IS THE KEY! Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor

You need to think how much time you have to fit this in, whether its 30 min sessions or an hour, you will need to consider childcare, costs, and how long you can do this for? Think how much you want to achieve your goal, personal training is an amazing tool yet you won’t get the results unless you put the effort in. There is no use training then going home and eating crisps and cakes, what’s the point! Your diet is key and alongside a trainer you must be putting the effort in with your healthy eating also. You can’t do one without the other so plan your meals, food prep and don’t go food shopping on an empty stomach.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Signs of spring A

t last spring is on the way with plants coming into growth with the lengthening daylight, even if there is frost and snow. Starting with small flowers, grow a drift of snowdrops, either the native single variety or for a change, buy some double snowdrops. As you can see from the photo, the double snowdrop flower is beautiful. Another flower for early spring is the Winter Aconite or Eranthis. This has bright buttercup yellow, glossy flowers on very short stems. Both snowdrops and Aconites prefer a humus rich soil, well drained, usually under larger shrubs or in woodland. Scented shrubs are a joy in winter as they are unexpected but often highly fragrant coming from relatively small flowers. The Winter Box Sarcococca confusa or Sarcococca Hookeriana is a low evergreen (to 80cms) with tiny white flowers, not much to look at but they pack a powerful fragrance which in a small space, will waft on the breeze. Another choice scented shrub is Daphne bholua Jaqueline Postill. Last year I visited Rode Hall to see the snowdrops and they had many of these shrubs in flower. They will grow to 2.5m tall, are evergreen and have clusters of sweetly scented pink flowers (see photo) all over the shrub. Will grow on any well drained but moisture retentive soil but must have shelter from wind and frost. There are some clematis that will flower in mild periods in winter although you have to bear in mind that many have much smaller flowers than the summer varieties. Clematis cirrhosa Jingle Bells or Freckles will flower in early spring. They have small bell shaped flowers in cream and spotted pink with evergreen foliage. These require shelter and a west or south facing position away from frost and with well drained, moisture retentive soil. If you have an apricot or peach growing against a wall or fence do remember to protect the flowers from frost. They flower in late February or early March so to make sure of a crop put a fleece over it when frost is due and remove during the day to allow pollination. Prune Wisteria new stems from last year back to 2 to 3 buds to encourage flowering but leave the fat buds on older wood alone – they should be your flowers for this year! Cut back dead stems from perennials and grasses being careful to avoid damaging any new shoots. 01244 318258 / 07984 627270 Janet Heath janet@gardenmentor.co.uk Garden Mentor 38 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.nestonlocal.com

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders

My worries about our National Health Service

T

he NHS is one of the greatest achievements of this country with this year being its 70th birthday, but the last few weeks have seen questions raised again about its future with terrible stories emerging of people being treated at a & e in trolleys, in the car park, on the floor and even in a broom cupboard!

There is no doubt that the winter has always been historically the busiest time of year for the NHS but this year feels particularly serious. Indeed, Chris Hopson, Chief Executive of NHS Providers, the body representing frontline trusts said that the NHS is at a “watershed moment and cannot deliver care to the standards required by its constitution with the funding it receives. This follows over 60 A & E Consultants writing to the Prime Minister expressing their concerns, and the Care Quality Commission, the body responsible for ensuring safety standards are met, announcing it was going to suspend its inspections in A & E departments due to the winter crisis. Whilst there is general agreement that the current situation is untenable (unless you are the Prime Minister of Health Secretary who have understandably tried to downplay the issue) there is not so much consensus amongst the politicians about what to do about it. A lack of available beds is one of the key causes 40 To advertise call 01244 350398

of delays at A&E, as well as patients being treated on hospital corridors and in the back of ambulances waiting outside of hospitals. Independent health think-tank, the King’s Fund reported in September 2017 that the NHS in England currently has fewer acute beds relative to its population than almost any other comparable health system. For me, at the heart of this is the inescapable fact that the NHS has been receiving funding increases of less than 1% a year for the last 8 years and most experts believe the NHS needs increases of around 4% each year to keep pace with increases in demand due to an aging population. The result of this unprecedented financial squeeze which combined with patients who are medically fit to be discharged from acute beds to be cared for in the community not able to go because of cuts in the social care sector means the images we have seen in the last few weeks were sadly inevitable. I do not want the Government to try and ride out the current storm and change nothing; I believe a commitment to returning to funding levels enjoyed in the previous decade will put the NHS on an even keel and secure its future for the next 70 years. The staff, who have been working under incredible pressure in recent times, deserve more support in order to deliver the NHS that most of the public want.
