Council grant ensures that the show goes on! Neston Town Council funding has ensured the continuation this year of Neston and District Art Society’s annual exhibition. Making the presentation of the grant certificate confirming the award, Town Mayor Cllr Mike Shipman said how much the annual exhibition contributed to the cultural life of the town. This year’s is being held at Neston Town Hall from 27th to 29th April. The presentation took place prior to the January meeting of the Society at which local artist Dennis Oakes demonstrated landscape painting techniques to members who had braved the cold weather. The Society meets on the first Monday of each month outside the summer months at 7.30pm at St Michael’s Hall, Marshlands Road. Nestonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s young writers become film makers Following their success at Neston Christmas Victorian Festival, Neston Young Writers will again undertake a challenging project to write and produce a short film. Writing and filming will take place in Neston with professional actors in the cast and members of InterACT Youth Theatre. The group, for ages 12-19, meets at Neston Community and Youth Centre on Burton Road, CH64 9RE and the dates for this term are 1st, 8th and 15th February, 1st, 15th and 29th March. Facilitator Mike Lockley will be sourcing a suitable film festival to enter the new work into. Cadets swap the skies for the river Three Neston Air Cadets started the new year activities by kayaking in the Lake District over the weekend. The natural geography of the lakes make them an excellent place to learn with sheltered bays, big open water, islands to explore and all set in magnificent scenery. Sergeant Jonathan Mountford, Corporal Kieran Eeles and Cadet Joshua Eeles all experienced kayakers took on the challenge of grade 2 and 3 rapids on the rivers Greta and Lune in the Lake District. On the first day, they went down the Greta. The trip started on flat water, easing up to Grade 2 rapids in the first kilometre, until the Magnetic Rock rapid is reached, the first of many Grade 3 rapids. The rapids proved to be an exhilarating and challenging experience for all the kayakers. On the second day, they went down the River Lune, the most challenging of the two rivers over the weekend. Corporal Eeles said the highlight was â&#x20AC;&#x153;the adrenalin rush of paddling fast water, learning and testing new skills. Kayaking white water is an extreme sport, and to stay safe you need concentration, physical strength, and to follow the instructions givenâ&#x20AC;?. 10 To advertise call 01244 350398

Plum job for Parkgate pupils Trees have been planted by local school children to complete the refurbishment of a popular play area in Parkgate. Children from Parkgate Primary School’s School Council planted apple and plum trees behind the recently refurbished Ropewalk Play Area in order to complete the scheme. Trees were supplied by the Mersey Forest as part of the Council and Neston Town Council led partnership scheme and will provide the local community with fresh fruit. In the summer three extra pieces of play equipment were also installed at the play area, thanks to funding secured by Cheshire West & Chester and Neston Town Councils. Cllr Louise Gittins said: “I’m delighted we worked closely with Neston Town Council to create such a wonderful play space. Play areas, like Ropewalk, make an important with contribution to the health and wellbeing of children and families in the area and we hope that they enjoy Mondays many happy hours here. 5pm & 7pm “I’m delighted that children from Methodist Church Hall Parkgate Primary School were able Mellock Lane, to come along to help plant the trees; Little Neston I’m sure they will enjoy seeing the Wednesdays results of their work in the spring.” 9.30am, 11.30am, 5pm & 7pm

The way we were Parkgate Baths

Swimmers and sunbathers enjoying themselves at Parkgate Baths in the early 1930s. Built in 1923 by Mr A G Grenfell, headmaster of Mostyn House School, the open air pool was intended primarily for use by the pupils but was also opened to the paying public. They relied on water from the Dee to fill the pool but as the water level fell in the river, so the cost of piping the water forced the closure after the end of World War Two, The site is now a car park for Wirral Country Park, near the Boathouse pub, pictured right in 1928, two years after it was built An aerial photograph would have shown that the outline was in the form of a boat. Christian spirit to the fore in Neston GENEROUS donations from Neston added up to nearly £12,000 for Christian Aid last year. The money from the sponsored events goes to areas in need across the world, including Syrian refugees and the Haiti Hurricane appeal. Events included the traditional Christian Aid sponsored walk from Neston to Heswall (pictured) which raised almost £2000. A collection at Gordale Garden Centre made over £300, house-to-house giving raised almost £8,000, a Christmas collection at made £500 and voluntary bagpacking at Sainsbury’s pro-duced £600 in December, taking the total up to nearly £12,000. As almost half of this was gift-aided, HM Treasury will add over £1,000 to this. Treasurer for Neston and District Christian Aid, Eileen Ward, said: ‘This is an excellent result. The need for the poorest people around the world is great, and it is good that we are doing what we can to help. Thank you to all those who volunteered to walk or collect, and to those generous people who sponsored and gave money.”

Woodfall on the rise THERE were celebrations at Woodfall Primary after the school was ranked among the top five per cent in the country. Post traumatic stress disorder Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by traumatic and distressing events which many military service men and woman often suffer from after serving in the Armed Forces. The time length when someone suffers from PTSD can vary massively. It can occur straight after a traumatic incident or can be triggered years later. Someone who is suffering from PTSD often relives the incident through nightmares or flashbacks triggered by everyday situations. Symptoms may include: l Re-experiencing - when the individual relives the traumatic event resulting in physical changes such as erratic behaviour, pain or trembling. l Avoidance and emotional numbing - avoiding certain people, places or objects which remind the PTSD sufferer of the traumatic incident. They might also avoid discussing the event completely.

l Feeling on edge l Depression l Anxiety l Headaches Bowen Therapy can help to relieve the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as it relieves stress from deep inside the body which can help reduce the symptoms of PTSD and can encourage the individual to regain a normal life. The Bowen Technique is a finger and thumb rolling movement which is applied to specific points of the body. It is performed on muscles, ligaments and soft tissue using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that person. No hard manipulation or force is needed or used. The Bowen Technique encourages the whole body to restore its natural hormonal and physiological balance, resulting in a release of deep stress from the individual’s body. Bowen Therapy is not forcing the body to change, but asking the body to

recognise the treatment and make the make the improvements accordingly. People normally find that Bowen Therapy is a gentle and relaxing experience. The sessions generally last around 30 – 60 minutes. Only 1 – 3 sessions may be necessary to see and feel a result, however, depending on the severity of the PTSD the individual is suffering, they may require more.
