Council demands improvements at High Road danger junction Major improvements are needed at the notoriously tricky junction between Raby Park Road and Chester High Road. That’s the view of Neston Town Council, which has asked Cheshire highways chiefs to look again at installing traffic lights. Anyone turning right out of Raby Park Road will know that it’s a difficult turn, with traffic seemingly coming from all angles. But it has been like this for many years and it’s not just minor bumps. Back in 1994 Heswall teenager Andrew Fielding was tragically killed in a crash near the junction. Recently, his mother Mrs Pauline Fielding spoke to Neston Town Council about the dangers. The council also received a report from Cllr Ceri Lloyd and letters from two residents suggesting the need for an overhaul of the A540 junctions. Mrs Fielding said: “I have been campaigning for 23 years since Andrew was killed in a crash caused by a driver who did not stay at the scene and who was never traced. Incredibly, the junction remains unimproved - and has become increasingly dangerous.” Now Neston Town Council has added its weight to the cause by resolving to ask

CWaC to undertake major improvements to install linked lights at the junction of Raby Park Road and the A540. It also resolved that the Independent CWaC councillor for Parkgate, Martin Barker, would take a question to the CWaC Full Council. Cllr Barker said: “If we are to make this important road safer and better for its users, a more comprehensive scheme is needed that coordinates the traffic lights at all the junctions to Neston and Parkgate from the A540. This has become increasingly important because of the redeveloped High School, the enlarged distribution warehouse, and the additional housing planned at Hinderton Hall.” Cllr Ceri Lloyd added: “The A540 is a vital link to the town and it is essential that it is made as safe as possible for all road users as a matter of urgency.” A petition calling for action already has around 2,000 signatures. l Cllr Martin Barker (CWaC and Neston Town Council), Mrs Pauline Fielding (RoadPeace) and Councillor Ceri Lloyd (Neston Town Council) with the petition for improvements.

Pupils help injured wildlife Neston Primary School councillors raised money for Wirral Animal Sanctuary. ÂŁ100 was raised at a cake sale. The councillors visited The Hog Centre and met some of the animals before presenting the money.

Poet visits

Pupils at Neston Primary school enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside the brilliant poet Matt Goodfellow. The children produced their own poems as part of a very enjoyable workshop. They later performed their poems to an audience.

Library improvements

The library at Neston Primary school received a facelift recently when the talented artist Andy Birch decorated the walls with his bright and colourful designs. The ideas were suggested by the pupils and they had the opportunity to help Andy with some of the painting.

Burton school’s muddy marvels The children from Bishop Wilson CE Primary School in Burton have had great success at recent cross country races against other local schools. Bishop Wilson gained first places in the girls’ year 3 and 4 race and the boys’ year five and six race.

Cohabiting Couples and your rights Jackie Campion explains some of the legal complexities facing cohabiting couples If you and your partner aren’t married or in a civil partnership, you might be surprised that you have very little legal protection if you break up. You may have lived together for many years or have children. However you are not legally recognised as a couple and this can make it very difficult to claim a share in the family home or your partner’s finances if you split. For couples living together it can seem normal for one partner to give up work to care for children or elderly relatives – or for the couple to make a verbal agreement where one pays the mortgage and the other pays the bills. But without having an agreement in place, the court can’t make your ex pay maintenance to support you just because it might be fair. We can offer you advice on simple steps that can be taken to protect each other. We can also assist if the relationship does break down and there are issues about the

finances or property. We can assist with the following possible steps: l Cohabitation agreement – this sets out your joint intentions for things like finances, property and arrangements for children if you split up. l Declaration of Trust – this sets out how you want to own a property and in what shares, and can also cover what happens if you split up. l Will – if one partner in an unmarried couple dies, the other does not have an automatic right to inherit your share of the property or possessions, without this being spelled out in a will. Even if the other partner has lived in the joint home for decades, without their name on the deed or as a beneficiary in the will, they could lose their home and any right to proceeds from the sale. anuary is a time to wait for spring, with bulbs just peeping through. Time to look and appreciate the shapes of evergreens in the garden. There are plants with dramatic shapes such as evergreen Phormiums or New Zealand Flax, with their long sword shaped leaves. They make a bold statement in any garden and come in a range of sizes and colours. Some have white and green leaves, others red, orange, plum and plain green. They need some shelter from wind and a well drained soil with moisture. The smaller ones can be grown in pots, so Bronze Baby with reddish purple tinged leaves will grow to about 1m tall and wide. Some such as Phormium tenax Pupureum will get to 2m tall and almost as wide. Pair them with low

growing mounded plants around the base. Another plant that will stand out in winter is the pine Picea pungens Hoopsii with pale blue/ grey needles on a slow growing tree which will make up to 4m in time. It needs to be in an exposed position with sunlight all around to make the perfect Christmas tree shape and have moist but well drained soil. To appreciate the tree, plant around it with low growing shrubs such as Euonymus Emerald n Gold or Silver Queen with their variegated foliage. Some winter heathers will be in flower in January with pretty pink or white flowers. Trim the bush back after flowering. If you want more substantial flowers I always recommend Hellebore orientalis varieties. These robust perennials with leathery

flowers come in white, pink and deep plum shades, some with speckled flowers, some are double but all flowers in the depths of winter. Cut most of the leaves off in late autumn so you can see the flowers developing. They like medium or heavy soils with plenty of humus and can flower in light shade under larger shrubs. Not ideal in full sun butefI have one B ore that copes with being baked in summer! Prune deciduous shrubs and climbers when you can see the branches free of leaves. You can get a good shaped shrub when pruned out of leaf. Pick up and diseased leaves from around the base of roses to try and reduce blackspot next season. School is under Jack’s spell Jack Stokes is the top speller at Neston High School. In an intense Spelling Bee challenge, he emerged victorious in the final with Grace Prytherch and Daisy Marsh. The competition, run by the school librarian Miss Pearson, initially involved working out science anagrams before moving onto spelling out words. The standard was so high that harder words had to be added to the final round!

St Winny’s enjoy the tag of champions The Year 6 class at St Winefride’s Catholic primary are tag rugby champions. They took part in the second round of the competition, playing against schools from Ellesmere Port, Frodsham and Helsby. After winning all of their matches, the children went through to the final, playing against Frodsham CE Primary School, which they won 4-2. This means that they will now go on to represent the Ellesmere Port, Neston and Frodsham/Helsby area at the Cheshire Games in March 2018

Wirral Hospice is collecting from addresses across the Wirral, including the CH60 and CH64 postcodes in Heswall and Neston. The hospice would welcome a donation for the collection of your Christmas tree. Cash injection for town play area The community in Neston is one step closer to getting an improved play area and open space at Sytchcroft Park in Neston thanks to a £44,954 grant from funding body WREN. The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, together with match funding secured from Cheshire West and Chester Council, Neston Town Council and the local ward member will be used to create a new play area, multi-use games area, footpaths and wider landscape improvements in the park. Cllr Louise Gittins said: “The improvements at Sytchcroft will provide a real boost for Neston. The project has been a great example of joint working between the Council, the Town Council, other project partners and the community. “The importance of green spaces and play areas in our communities, and the contribution they make to health and wellbeing, has long been recognised. It is essential that the quality of our play areas and green spaces is maintained and enhanced where possible. “It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to a refurbished play area and open space taking shape over the next year. Cllr Ceri Lloyd, from Neston Town Council, said: “The bid is the culmination of a lot of hard work and perseverance from a number of people committed to improving the quality of life for Neston residents. “The success of the bid to receive money from WREN shows the power of effective partnership working within local communities. The Town Council has worked with its partners to secure considerable external funding for this project. We look forward to working with everyone to deliver the new park and the improved recreational outcomes for people of Neston.” The Council in partnership with Neston Town Council conducted wide scale public consultation in 2016 and 2017 presenting ideas to the community on how to improve the whole Sytchcroft site. Ideas included the presentation of a masterplan detailing how to refurbish the site which included new toddler and junior play areas, a multi-use games area together with open space and landscaping improvements, improved entrances to and from the site, new signage and site footpath links. There was widespread community support to improving the site.
