Willaston footpaths sealed with a kiss! Willaston Residents’ and Countryside Society (WR&CS) has now completed its programme of installing kissing gates on all the footpaths in the Parish, replacing stiles and making the paths more accessible for younger and older people. The final gates were recently put in thanks to funding from Cllr Myles Hogg’s budget and the Wirral Footpaths and Open Spaces Preservation Society. Jane Townsend, WR&CS’s Footpaths Officer said: “We are delighted that we have managed to install kissing gates across the area. They enable farmers to keep farm animals in the field whilst allowing people to pass through. There is no problem about having to unlatch a gate or clamber over a stile, which is difficult for many people ... and of course, it is fun to demand a kiss if you are the first person through!” 6 To advertise call 01244 350398
Chris Hampshire, Chair of WR&CS added: “We are grateful to Peter Atkinson, the Public Rights of Way Officer at Cheshire West and Chester Council as the Council has replaced a number of stiles over the years and has helped WR&CS to obtain all the permissions that we needed to install new stiles. WR&CS was formed in lieu of a Parish Council to protect and improve the environmental amenities of the village and its surroundings; preserve and encourage village cultural and social activities; and represent the views of the village and monitor matters of common interest. The Society is entirely run by volunteers. Hannah Troake with some children enjoying a game on the kissing gate at the Johnston Recreation Ground in Willaston.

Volunteers aim to spruce up historic Hadlow Road station A new group based in Willaston, but which is open to any interested party, has begun community activities at Hadlow Road Station. The Friends of Hadlow Road Station has formed a committee, adopted a constitution that provides a framework for the group to operate within, and have begun meeting regularly at the village Memorial Hall. In addition, two community volunteer clear up days have already been held at the Station in April and May 2015. Chris Hampshire, Chair of the Friends Group says: “We hope that anyone visiting the Station will see a difference to the level crossing gates on the east side of Hadlow Road, in the gardens on both sides of the platforms and with the planted trough. Our thanks go to all the volunteers who have made this possible with their hard work and commitment.” Paul Taylor, the Wirral Country Park Ranger based at the Station, added: “We are really pleased with the efforts made by all the volunteers.” In addition to these activities a large overhaul of the disused wooden signal box building is also well underway for completion this month. This will add significantly to the overall experience visitors will feel at the station. An official re-opening ceremony of the signal box is also being planned and a stall manned by volunteers has been booked at Willaston Festival on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June at Johnston Recreation ground in Willaston. Following that, plans are in place for the 150th commemorative celebrations to recognise the opening of the station on 1st October 1866. Friends of Hadlow Road Station is entirely run by volunteers and was formed to work with Cheshire West and Chester Council to protect and enhance the Historic Buildings and direct surroundings at Hadlow Road Station; preserve and encourage village and volunteer cultural and social activities; and to represent the views of the Society and monitor matters of common interest.
Deputy Mayor Myles The new Deputy Mayor of Ellesmere Port is Cllr Myles Hogg who has been a councillor for 28 years, representing Willaston and Thornton for 20 of them. He was Mayor of Ellesmere Port and Neston in 2002/2003 and has been a Governor of The Whitby High School for 27 years and Chair for 12 years. He is Governor of Childer Thornton Primary School and also West Cheshire College. Councillor Hogg is a Chartered Accountant and is married to Marilyn with three grown up children and eight grandchildren. He has lived in Willaston since 1985 and his hobbies are gardening and playing bridge. Cllr Hogg said: “My role during the coming twelve months will be supporting the Mayor and I hope that I will be getting out and about around Ellesmere Port, meeting local people and children at a number of occasions and events.”

Better train services so important to Neston A through rail service between Neston and Liverpool is a big priority for Neston Town Council. The council believes such a service should be delivered within an English rail franchise rather than a Welsh one. The interim statement of rail priorities was agreed at the Council’s last full meeting as part of its response to the Network Rail consultation on the Welsh Rail Network. But the Council has gone further in identifying its own priorities. It considers that it is important to secure improved bus services for the town with a focus on access to Hooton Railway station, Arrowe Park Hospital and Deeside Industrial Park. The Council supports proposed improvements in facilities at Shotton within Network Rail’s Welsh Route consultation, but does not believe that the Neston railway should be part of the Welsh network. A transport conference in 2015/16 to develop and publicise its priorities and develop a fuller position statement is planned by the Council, which is calling on Cheshire West and Chester Council, on Neston CWaC councillors and on Justin Madders MP, to recognise the neglected state of Neston’s rail services and to make Neston their top railway priority. Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Phil Lloyd
8 To advertise call 01244 350398
said: “The creation of a more powerful Welsh Assembly and the emergence of a possible City Region based on Liverpool leave Neston at risk of isolation. The Town Council is determined to ensure that Neston is well connected and believes that direct, electrified rail access to Liverpool within an English rail franchise is vital. We also welcome possible improvements at Shotton that assist access to Deeside and Chester as mentioned in the Network Rail consultation for Wales. “We aspire to the same levels of service, security and station facilities offered by Merseyrail to neighbouring towns and villages. We encourage Neston residents to respond to the Network Rail study in order to add weight to the Town Council’s position. “Better bus services are also vital, and should be coordinated with trains whenever possible, so that Neston residents can access major destinations for work, leisure and medical appointments.” Network Rail is conducting a review of its Welsh network that currently includes Neston as part of the Borderlands line and can be accessed via www.networkrail.co.uk

Now for the news – Neston style! Neston High students who had been selected by their English teachers participated in the BBC School Report project which took place in more than 1,000 schools over the UK. It consisted of students carrying out interviews, filming, editing and reporting on worldwide issues. The students demonstrated impressive skills and commitment, and were supported by Ms McKeown and Mr Smith. For over a month the news team have been meeting twice a week to collect ideas and produce the reports. During these meetings students have been discussing what to report on, delegating roles and combining everyone’s research. The topics for the news stories included Cancer Research, Neston Council’s budget cuts and YouTube on its 10th birthday. For the YouTube story students explored the question: are vloggers a good influence on the youth of today? Students also interviewed the school Librarian, Miss Pearson, for a report on council cuts and how this will affect the local libraries. Mr Smith said: “It was an amazing experience for the students; they all enjoyed doing the project for the first time and the reports and interviews the students have produced have been to an incredibly high standard.” Student Ruby Dodd said: “I really loved doing the interviews and working with my peers in a different and exciting way.” Archie Jackson added: ““My favourite part was editing all of the recordings and being able to work with students from other year groups.” Above: Archie Jackson, Sam Madders, Will Dennison, Tom Price, Emma Fewtrell, Cerys Price, Abbie Cannon and Ruby Dodd Left:Abbie Cannon, Sam Madders and Will Dennison

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Neston, Parkgate, Little Neston, Burton and Ness
& Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

21 pieces of stunning artwork from seven schools in Neston, Parkgate, Burton and Willaston will be unveiled on Wednesday 1st July, at a launch event in Neston Market Square. Over 200 children took part in workshops led by Community Activities in Neston, to create floral and nature themed collages to decorate the walls of Neston Market Square. The individual pieces of art were photographed and assembled into collage panels by graphic designer Jo Richardson, and will take two days to install in Neston Market Square. CAN Group Project Manager Eileen Miller says, “It’s been a huge undertaking to involve this number of children in the project, but we wanted as many as possible to be able to have the achievement of seeing their artwork on public display. Neston Market Square will be a secret garden which we hope will delight residents, impress visitors and instil a sense of pride in hundreds of children and their families.” The Schools Market Square Art Project has been a collaborative initiative, spearheaded by Cllr Janet Griffiths and Cllr Kay Loch. It is the latest project to be funded from S106 money

from the Sainsbury’s development which has to be spent within the town centre. It follows investment in pavements and road surfaces, new lighting columns and marketing of the town and its markets. Cllr. Andy Williams, Chair of the S106 Group, said: “This is a great way to brighten up the market square, and I hope the many local children who took part will be very proud to see their art displayed for all their family and friends to see.” The floral theme for the artwork was inspired by the work of international artist Gordon Young, who has been working with local groups in Neston on an art initiative led by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC). CAN Group were asked by CWAC to coordinate the work with Gordon Young locally, and it tied in perfectly with Cllrs Loch and Griffiths’ idea to brighten up Neston Market Square by working with local schools. The official unveiling of the Schools Market Square Artwork will take place at 10.30am on Wednesday 1st July on Neston Market Square. New MP hails ‘productive meeting’ with town council MP Justin Madders described as ‘productive’ his informal meeting with members of Neston Town Council for an exchange of views. He said, “There was a lot of agreement on the future priorities for the town.” Councillors pressed the case for improvements especially to the rail service for Neston, and the problems caused by the service being run within a Welsh franchise. Other local priorities discussed included the urgent need for affordable housing and economic development in the town. Mr Madders was impressed with Town Council initiatives such as securing the Liverpool to Chester cycle ride passing through the town. The councillors emphasised the role of the local council in championing the needs and aspirations of the town. 18 To advertise call 01244 350398

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?
A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Summer is coming... are you bikini ready? It’s the time of year we either love or loathe. If you have been good and working hard for the summer months you will be proud to show off your new body, if however you have left it too late you’ll be happy to stay in your jeans and jumper for a little longer. So are there any quick fixes if your August holiday is approaching and what can you do to get results FAST! 1. Cut the carbs! Most people start the day off with toast or cereal (carbs) fruits for a snack (carbs) sandwich and crisps (carbs) pasta or meat, potatoes and veg (carbs) as you can see the common theme is Carbs and although I wouldn’t advise anyone to cut carbs out completely but if they aren’t being used up on a daily basis this WILL turn to fat! Stick to higher protein foods throughout the day they keep you fuller for longer, will help prevent muscle wastage and when you’re working out will help create muscle tone!
amount of time with a high energy class! Aim to work out 5 times a week and make sure you are sweating/ heart rate is high and you are truly fatigued.
3. Drink plenty of water! Flush out all your toxins and get your skin glowing. This alone will help you lose weight, 3 litres a day if you’re getting active. 4. Cut the sugar, sugars may taste good, but they really aren’t doing anything for your waist line. Just cutting sugars out in your tea/ coffee can save you loads of added calories. Watch out for sugars in concentrated orange juice/ fruit juices/ sparkling water and certain high sugar fruits like pineapple/ grapes/ tangerines and tomato soups/ sauces.
Design 5. Make sure you are sleeping enough. Sleep
is when your body recovers and is when you get your results! If you aren’t getting your 7 hours, you run the risk of becoming fatigued in the day, meaning you crave sugary/ high carb foods to try and keep your energy levels up. Get to bed earlier and avoid teas/ coffees/ sugary drinks before bed.
Supply
2. Get active and commit to something, if you have 6 weeks before your hols this is the time you get to get moving and the intensity has to be high. Providing you have relatively good fitness and you aren’t too over weight it’s time to hit it hard! Jogging for an hour will burn calories but you will get more done in a shorter

Neston at the heart of charity cycle Neston will be put firmly on the sporting map in July when the Liverpool Chester bike ride passes through for the first time in history. The annual cycle challenge, organised by Pennine Events, is now in its 22nd year and 2015 is giving you even more opportunities to be a part of this fantastic event on 5th July. A variety of routes are on offer for all abilities – and all of these pass through Neston. To add to the atmosphere of the day, a host of family activities will also be held, including a family fun day at Neston Cricket Club from 12noon. Keeping with the fitness theme, a fun run will take place between Willaston and Parkgate, along the Wirral Way. This 5k race will see participants doused in different colours as they take part. Sue White, Event Manager at Pennine Events, said: “We want to encourage as many people as possible to take part. This year’s event really does promise to be one of our best.
“We are delighted to be taking the ride through this beautiful part of the Cheshire countryside and it is fantastic to see that the town of Neston is on board to support us and offer lots of additional attractions too.” For the fourth consecutive year Wirral based charity Claire House is the ride’s official partner. The event has already raised more than £120,000 for the charity. To sign up and for further details of the event contact support@pennineevents. co.uk Follow the event on Twitter @lclbikeride and on Facebook at liverpoolchesterliverpool
Neston Riverside WI Neston Riverside WI learnt some basic sign language at their May meeting thanks to Pauline Macdonald’s instructions and can now both sing and sign “I Can Sing A Rainbow.” Pauline is a retired teacher of the hearing impaired who enjoyed passing on her experience and enthusiasm. Neston Riverside has an enthusiastic singing group called The Riverside Rhapsodists who help the WI to make a good sound at the best of times but when the signing was included it made it a rather special occasion. Members also had a tour of Hoylake Lifeboat Station and were impressed by the state of the art lifeboat, the Edmund Hawthorn Micklewood, and the tractor used to tow it. 40 To advertise call 01244 350398

Prestigious award for Neston charity A Neston charity which provides holidays for terminally ill children has been given a national award. Buckingham Palace announced that Northern Lights was to become a recipient of the Queens Award for Voluntary Services (QAVS) for 2015. It is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. It is the MBE for volunteer groups. Northern Lights was nominated for its volunteer work in the community since its founding and was assessed by the LordLieutenant of Cheshire representatives on the benefit the charity brings to the local community and its standing within that community.
Northern Lights raises funds to give children with life limiting illnesses the unique experience of a very special holiday they will never forget. Every December, the charity takes a group of children, aged between six and 11, on a five-day holiday to the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland to meet Father Christmas. Alan Johnson, secretary and father of Christopher, whom the charity was set up in memory of, said: “The holidays provided by Northern Lights give the children an opportunity to forget, albeit for a short while, about their health problems. It’s great to watch their faces light up with pleasure as they are being whisked along on sleds pulled by huskies, driven around on snowmobiles, pulled in sleds by reindeer, tobogganing and being presented with presents by the ‘real’ Santa. about the time spent in Lapland seems to give them renewed strength to carry on fighting their own particular illnesses. Consultants often ask “what do you do whilst in Lapland” because the children often come back more confident and independent. In truth, we do not know, but these holidays seem to provide a useful component in the treatment of these awful illnesses and as a charity we are very proud to have played a small part in this role and delighted to have been awarded the QAVS.” Karen Jones, chairman and founding member, added: “When the charity was founded in 1987 (as the Christopher Johnson Fund), we had no idea that nearly 30 years later we would still be sending children with life limiting illnesses on these wonderful holidays.”

Gardening by Janet Heath
High Summer in JulY July is a month when the classic English herbaceous border is seen at its best. The gardens mentioned below have lovely borders and will give you ideas of plants to grow in your own garden. I love the herbaceous borders filled with perennials that pop up year after year. Agapanthus with its large heads of deep blue or white flowers and green strap like leaves it is an architectural plant for a hot sunny border and grows best in well drained soil and moisture at the roots. Another good plant for a sunny site is Lychnis coronaria also known as Bridget–in–herbravery according to the RHS website. If you have a sandy well drained soil in baking sun then this will be an asset to any border. It has grey/silvery soft leaves with magenta pink or white flowers. It does not last long but it will seed happily.
Lavenders are also a lovely small shrub for a sunny border. If you want the classic lavender scent then go for English Lavender Lavendula angustifolia. With many different varieties of English Lavender to choose from (over 250 apparently) there will be one for a pot or a gravelly soil and baking hot sunny border. Compact varieties like Hidcote or Munstead are better for smaller areas. In July cut back flowering shrubs such as Lilac, Weigela, Cistus and Philadelphus, just after they finish flowering, if you want to reduce them in size. Cut off dead flowers from Roses, Penstemons, Delphiniums, Centaurea, Nepeta and Lupins and you may well get a second flush of flowers in late summer – always a bonus! Dead heading annuals in pots will keep them flowering and do remember to keep pots well
watered in dry weather. Sow salad seeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce and lettuce for autumn cropping. l If you would like to visit gardens for ideas and a lovely afternoon tea, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. In Chester, on 4th and 5th July, 150 Barrell Well Hill gardens are open. On a series of terraces going down to the River Dee you can see perennials and shrubs for sun, a stream and bog garden. The Rowans at Threapwood near Malpas is open on 11th and 12th July has an Italianate theme. With formal and natural areas including ponds it is a fascinating garden to visit.
