Summer performing arts course

Youth theatre group Little Actors is again offering a summer performing arts course in Neston for 7-12-year-olds. Collaborating with a theatre director and a choreographer, the children will create a new musical version of a favourite story. Parkgate based professional actor Natasha Symms will direct the show collaborating with Leila Chebbi who will create the song and dance routines. The course will run from Monday 1st August to Friday 5th August, 10am to 3pm each day at Neston Town Hall. On the Friday afternoon the children will present their new theatre creation to family and friends. The course will cost ÂŁ55 or FREE for low income families. Bright ideas for life after retirement BRIGHTLIFE, the organisation set up to tackle loneliness amongst older people in Cheshire West and Chester, is launching a competition to make over £250,000 available to local people and community groups. The Bright Ideas Competition welcomes individuals and community organisations from across the region to pitch their ideas for projects and activities that could help to reduce the risk of social isolation in over-50s. Successful applicants will win a share of the £250,000 award money to turn their ideas into reality. “The Bright Ideas competition is a great way of making funding accessible to community-minded people and smaller organisations that might not apply through traditional routes,” says Commissioning Manager Adele Gatley, who is working in consultation with Brightlife’s Older People’s Alliance. “We are encouraging applications from any source, regardless of size, and working closely with Chester Voluntary Action to provide tailored packages of business support to applicants, giving them the best possible chance of securing funding for their ideas.” The Bright Ideas competition will be run over four rounds, with each round open for applications for nine weeks. Brightlife is holding a series of free information workshops for anyone interested in applying to the competition, held in various locations throughout Cheshire West and Chester during June and July. Town mayor re-elected Cllr Mike Shipman has been reelected as Chairman of Neston Town Council, and therefore as Town Mayor. Cllr Ceri Lloyd was re-elected as Deputy. Cllr Shipman was a founder member of Neston Town Council in 2009 and represents Little Neston Ward. Having been brought up and married in Wallasey, Cllr Shipman has worked in Further Education locally before moving to the Midlands and then to the NorthEast where he was a college Assistant Principal and Director of Quality, before working independently as a consultant in curriculum and quality. After retiring he returned to the Wirral and has lived in Neston since 2000. After election he thanked members for their help and cooperation during the last year. The Town Council is implementing a staffing restructuring from July and it was felt that continuity of Council leadership was important. This will also be helped with the continuation in office of Cllr Ceri Lloyd as Deputy Mayor since she has played a major role in the restructure as Chair of the Council’s Human Resources Committee. PHIL LLOYD has resigned from Neston Town Council. He was co-opted to the council in January 2014 as a member for Neston Ward and re-elected in May last year. The mayor Cllr Mike Shipman said: “I believe Phil has made an outstanding contribution to the town through his work on the Council. In particular, his work to improve public transport in the town has involved regular contact with our local MP and various transport lobby groups. Backing for befriending scheme THE Neston and District Community Fund is backing a project to improve the lives of vulnerable older people. The Fund is giving a grant of £2,100 to support the Neston element of the Close to Home initiative which is run by Ellesmere Port and Neston Association of Voluntary and Community Organisations (EPNAVCO). Around 20 older people within the Neston area will benefit from the funding of the volunteer befriending programme. The project is a lifeline for vulnerable older adults – often the volunteer is the only person they see all week. Volunteers are also trained to identify issues such as failing health, confusion or environmental problems such as their home being too cold or in need of urgent repairs. The grant provided by the Fund will help to reduce the length of time between a referral being made and a volunteer befriender being matched with the service user. Phil Bates, one of the founders of the Neston and District Community Fund, said: “As soon as we heard about the Close to Home project, we had no hesitation in agreeing to fund the initiative. “It is a fantastic example of why we decided to launch the Neston and District Community Fund. Hopefully, other similar projects committed to tackling social isolation and deprivation will come forward and tell us about their work and funding requirements.”

Party fit for a Queen! Pupils at Neston Primary School, staff and invited guests enjoyed a very colourful, and memorable day recently, when they celebrated The Queen’s 90th birthday by holding a party for the whole school. The hall was elaborately decorated and pupils made crowns to wear and flags of Commonwealth nations to wave. There was time for a sing-a-long before the birthday cake was cut. Traditional party games followed and ‘the Queen’ herself made a special appearance!

Get ready for Neston’s big weekend of fun Go Neston! Cycle, Run, Play, Shop, Eat and Drink.... A great weekend of events is coming up in the first weekend of July in and around Neston. On Saturday 2nd July there’s Neston Farmers’ and Food Makers’ Market from 9am to 1pm on the Market Square, followed by Neston Village Fair – a hugely popular annual event - at Comrades Field behind the Parish Church from 1pm, featuring plenty of entertainment, stalls, games, raffles and refreshments. Following its success last year Sunday 3rd July will see the Liverpool-ChesterLiverpool Bike Ride come through Parkgate and Neston. Local cyclists Andy Mills, who established the Neston Cycle Town Initiative to increase awareness of Neston as a great cycling hub said, “We are expecting thousands of riders to come through the town between 9am and 12noon, so even if you’re not riding, why not come down and support the cyclists as they come through. Guide leaflets of the newly produced Family Cycle Ride will also be available for those wanting to pedal a local route.” Zaria Shreef, of Neston Community & Youth Centre, who has arranged a number of cycle fairs in Neston said, “It’s going to be a great day for cycling. On Sunday afternoon the Colour FUN Run for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd will start in Willaston at noon, with participants being pelted with different coloured dyes as they make their way down the Wirral Way to Parkgate. In all their multi-coloured madness they will be greeted at Neston Cricket Club, where there will be a Family Fun Day – free entry for all! On a sunny afternoon members met for a picnic lunch in the grounds of Burton Manor. Goodies were eaten, champagne was drunk and the Queen was toasted in a happy, friendly atmosphere. MEMBERS of the Neston & Parkgate Slimming World groups, together with other local groups, have collected 608 bags of clothes, worth £18,240 that they’ve successfully slimmed out of to, raise money for Cancer Research UK. Jayne Williams, a weight loss Consultant who runs the Neston & Parkgate Slimming World groups, encouraged members, their friends and families in Neston & Parkgate to spring-clean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they’ve successfully slimmed out of to generate valuable stock for local Cancer Research UK shops. The groups, which meet every Monday & Wednesday at UR Church Centre & Neston British Legion and have lost a stunning 291 stones since January this year, were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the ‘Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. With each bag worth up to £30, Jayne hopes the contribution from the Neston & Parkgate groups will help to reach that total. She says: “The incredible members of my group have amazed me with their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again! “Knowing they’ll never need their ‘before’ clothes again, when I told my group about the campaign they couldn’t wait to take part. Not only is the Clothes Throw a perfect opportunity for all of us to celebrate our slimming success, it is also vital we spread the message that keeping a healthy weight could reduce the risk of developing ten different types of cancer. “My group sessions are always buzzing and when we collected the bags in the atmosphere was incredible. My members have seen stunning weight losses simply by making small changes to the way they shop, cook and eat, and by taking steps to become more active. But the best thing about our group is the caring support members give to each other, spurring each other along and sharing recipes and tips every week.”

A right royal celebration The children at Bishop Wilson CE Primary School in Burton have enjoyed a fantastic street party to celebrate the Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 90th Birthday. All the children and staff sat down to traditional party food prepared by the school catering team and the PTA. The playground never looked better! The afternoon continued with traditional playground games that the Queen herself may have enjoyed as a child. The children were presented with a commemorative coin to mark this occasion. In addition, the Craft Club at Bishop Wilson were asked by the Local Vicar, Rev Helm, to create a display in church as part of their celebrations. A fantastic stained glass window and ceramic flower display was created.

All looking good at Neston Primary Neston Primary School is celebrating after being given a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted inspectors The inspection team visited the Burton Road school in May and found that it was ‘good’ with ‘outstanding’ judgements for early years and personal development, behaviour and welfare. There was praise for the pupils’ behaviour and head teacher Rob Golding as well as positive comments about the imaginative curriculum and good attitudes to learning.
