Neston is a ‘Champion School’ NESTON High School is now officially a Renaissance Learning ‘Champion School’. Charlotte Pearson, library resource manager has implemented schemes, rewards and reading communities in school to earn ‘Champion School’ status. Miss Pearson says: “This award is the product of years of work developing and inspiring reading strategies. It is reflective of the incredible work of students and their genuine love of reading. “The reading community in school has blossomed at Neston High School. Students are taking out more books than ever and have described how the scheme has motivated them to read more. Literacy standards are improving with the emphasis on reading for pleasure and we are in a position where the library is full every break and lunch time with students reading and quizzing!” Events throughout the year and efforts to promote and develop reading such as Big School Read, Reading Millionaires Scheme and local author visits from Jon Mayhew are lending themselves to continuing improvements in English results and raising standard of Literacy. The school’s Reading Millionaires scheme directly attributed to recognition for outstanding practice in promoting reading for pleasure. Reading Millionaires are a group of 35 students who have already read over a million words since September 2015. With the help of Accelerated Reader the school can calculate how many words a student is reading. Students take quizzes about the books they are reading and each quiz passed adds more words to their overall total. Paul Pearson, head of English, said: “This award is recognition of the incredible commitment of the students and staff to improve levels of literacy and reading for pleasure. It is wonderful to see pupils of all ages and abilities engaging with independent reading and pushing themselves to not only improve their levels of literacy but to get the very best out of the key skill of reading in English.” Students and staff gathered to celebrate the achievement where reading millionaires received a commemorative badge emblazed with ‘Reading Champion’ 4 To advertise call 01244 350398

It’s a ‘yes’ from Neston Neston’s Neighbourhood Plan received a majority yes vote in the referendum. Of the 3,469 people voting, 2,930 voted in favour of the neighbourhood plan, a majority of 2455. In 2012 the Town Council took the decision to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan and established a Communi-ty Steering Group to undertake the task. The Community Steering Group has worked tirelessly over the last four years to deliver a plan that represents the views and aspirations of the local community. The Neston Neighbourhood Plan will now be formally ‘made’ by Cheshire West and Chester Council and will become part of the statutory development plan for the Neston area and will be used alongside the Local Plan as a basis for making decisions on planning applications. Councillor James Wilkie said: “This represents the successful culmination of four years work by the Town Council and the Community Steering Group. On behalf of the Town Council I would like to thank the members of the Community Steering Group, members of the Task and Finish Groups, and our planning consultants Cass Associates. Without their considerable efforts it would not have been possible to pro-duce this plan. I now look forward to Cheshire West and Chester Council taking full account of the Neigh-bourhood Plan when determining planning applications.” Economic plan for Neston Neston Town Council has agreed an Economic Plan for Neston. The plan, a joint initiative between Neston Town Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council, sets out a comprehensive analysis of the local economy and contains an action plan setting out proposals for a number of key areas including the town centre, economy and employment, public transport, and the visitor economy. It can be viewed at Neston Library and Neston Town Hall and on the Neston Town Council website www.neston.org.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Neston, Parkgate, Little Neston, Burton and Ness

& Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LEGAL MATTERS Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors

Where there’s a Will

A

well used expression is ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’. We would play on this to say where there’s a Will, there is a clear set of instructions and wishes you leave so that those you leave behind can deal with matters efficiently. Not so snappy we admit, but it raises the question of where is your Will? You may well know the answer to this question, but at the risk of being blunt, this is of little use. More important is that your family or Executors know where your Will is.

A recent example to illustrate the need for others to know the whereabouts of your Will: James was an only child and never married or had children. Popular and active in the local community, with a number of close friends but in his latter years illness befell him such that social services came to manage his financial affairs as a Deputy for the Court of Protection. The nature of his illness also meant he could not provide any information about his family. When the inevitable time came to deal with his estate, social services confirmed no Will or reference to one was found in James’ papers. Canvassing of local law firms produced no positive results and so the estate was dealt with as intestate, meaning no Will in place. This in turn meant commissioning genealogical research to identify, trace and contact the ‘blood’ relatives entitled under the laws of intestacy. Furthermore, the closest able relative had to be ‘recruited’ as Administrator, in place of an executor. Obviously all this adds both to the costs and duration of the estate administration. One of the relatives contacted had been close to James and had a recollection from years ago James had talked about making his Will but didn’t know any more.

A few months had passed, all entitled relatives had been traced, contacted and notified, the Administrator recruited, and the Probate Registry had issued ‘Letters of Administration’ which is the approval to administer the estate when there is no Will.

Distribution was planned when out of the blue an email was received from a small law firm some distance away. This solicitor had tried to contact James, and in the absence of a response made some basic online enquiries and came across the estate notice in the London Gazette. The Solicitor was planning on retiring and was contacting clients to ask where they want their Wills to be sent for safe storage… Whilst working away many years ago James had called in to a Solicitor offering a discounted Will service and had made a Will leaving his estate to the cousin mentioned above, a longstanding friend and a charity he favoured, and the cousin was the nominated executor. All the work in the estate to date was largely wasted, and very nearly the Administrator was at risk of acting illegally and liable to the beneficiaries named in the Will. So, if you have made a Will, make sure you have discussed it with your chosen executors, keep a copy in a safe place, and clearly record where the original is stored. If you have not made a Will, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Better biking

Thousands of cyclists expected to THE prestigious Liverpool to Chester Bike Ride returns to Neston on Sunday 3rd July. The ride is expected to attract around 4,000 cyclists and is suitable for all ages and abilities due to the range of routes and traffic free sections. It is also the only annual cycle event in the country to include 3 miles riding underground with exclusive use of the Birkenhead (Queensway) Tunnel. Last year saw the rerouting of the ride back through Neston for the first time in over 10 years. James Wilkie, chairman of the council’s town centre committee, who approved the rerouting of the ride through Neston said: “Last year’s event was a phenomenal success 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

and the town council welcomes the return of the ride through Neston once again. Like last year residents will get to experience the excitement of a mass participation ride, local businesses will have an opportunity to show riders and visitors what great things there are on offer in the area and riders will get to experience a taste of the ‘Cheshire Rivera’.’ As well as opportunities along the route, Neston Town Council, with support from CAN (Community Activities in Neston), will be providing a service area for participant and visitors at Neston Market Square. Katy Pierce, Town Centre Manager for Neston Town Council said: “This is a real opportunity

Better public transport is vital for town Neston Town Council returned to the issue of transport at its April meeting - and agreed to establish the Neston Transport Standard. In agreeing the standard, the council took account of important views from the public response to their consultation: l A better link between Neston and Chester is needed – especially at weekends and in the evening. l Neston should look for a range of short and longer term improvements to meet the standard. l A half-hourly service on the Borderlands line is a priority – nearly 1,300 signatures were collected on this issue for Justin Madders’ petition that will now go to Parliament. The council also agreed to become a station adopter and improve Neston station’s appearance - and the protection of the public – by contributing to floral displays and making the case for CCTV in the vicinity of the station. On 15th April a deputation from Neston Town Council attended a high-level conference organised by the Deeside Business Forum at Connah’s Quay. They articulated Neston’s role in the Deeside economy and the importance of transport links – particularly to the booming Deeside Industrial Park. l Pictured: Town Councillors James Wilkie, Phil Lloyd, Ceri Lloyd and Mayor Mike Shipman put the case for better transport for Neston at the Coleg Cambria conference.

Bathroom

Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.

The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering. Owner Dave Sergison commented, ‘Customers will literally be able to

get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’

And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Friends are on track for a new kitchen THERE will be some 21st century improvements to the Victorian delights of Hadlow Road Station. Part of the station building will be converted into a small kitchen for the Friends Group to use at forthcoming events. The work is being carried out by Cheshire West and Chester Council, which owns the Willaston site. Western Link has also given a grant of £1,000 towards white goods and cupboards. Ged Weeden, from the Friends Group, said: “This is a very welcome announcement and particularly well-timed as we approach summer and the 150th anniversary of the opening of Hadlow Road Station in October this year with celebrations scheduled for Saturday 1st October.” Ged added: “The Friends Group are always looking for more volunteers to join to support our aim of improving

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders

Justin Madders, the Labour MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, and Shadow Health Minister, gives his thoughts on the outcome of the Hillsborough inquests.

Hillsborough

J

AMES Delaney, Christopher Edwards and James Hennessy are names the people of this area will always remember. Young men with their lives ahead of them were lost to us when they attended a football match at Hillsborough in 1989. In total, 96 football fans died and it is a mark of shame for this country that it took 27 years for the truth to become official, that these fans were unlawfully killed.

Touchwood Tree Surgery

Like most people, I remember at the time the horror of the scenes unfolding on TV. I remember two lads from my football team appearing on the national news laying a wreath on the terraces in the aftermath which shook me to the core. We all knew someone who was at the match and in the days before mobile phones it wasn’t as easy to get the word out that somebody was safe, but the agony of waiting for news was nothing RFS Cert Arb & NPTC Qualified Staff compared to the pain for those who lost loved ones. Scandalously, we know that pain Fully Insured Domestic & Commercial was only the start. What followed was a concerted attempt by the authorities and certain sections of the media to smear those fans. For those born in the last few decades it is Pruning, Felling, Reducing difficult to comprehend just how much football fans were demonised by some at this Dismantling and Clearance time and they seemed the perfect scapegoat for the authorities to blame for their own Hedge negligence. ButMaintenance the families knew differently and they have shown tremendous spirit and determination to keep fighting for the truth. Stump Removal

Tree Surveys The original inquestand wasreports a travesty and whilst the most recent one finally got to the truth, it was still made much harder than it needed to be by police lawyers continuing to smear theFree fans. The fact that no Estimates &individual Advice has yet been called to account for their actions is something that now needs to be put right. Prosecutions must follow.

0151 336 5847

Andy Burnham MP gave one of the most powerful speeches ever heard in the House of 07825 994to246 Commons in response the official statement from the Home Secretary. He said: “What kind of country leaves people who did no more than wave off their loved ones to a football www.touchwoodtreesurgery.co.uk match still sitting in a courtroom 27 years later begging for the reputations of their sons, info@touchwoodtreesurgery.co.uk daughters, brothers, sisters and fathers?” We should all reflect on this, those complicit must answer for their actions and we have to ensure something like this never, ever happens again.

Ness and Little Neston WI

In April we enjoyed a faulous Birthday Dinner at Prenton Golf Club, wonderful food and glorious views. The craft group proudly presented a beautifully decorated cake, thanks to Ann Howard’s sugarcraft instruction. There was an interesting visit to the World of Glass at St Helens. Several large, fragile exquisite hand blown bowls were gingerly carried back on the coach. Flavia and Vincent were wonderful in the Last Tango at the Empire, everyone enjoying the stars of Strictly Come Dancing A large group had a Scandinavian buffet at the Nordic Church in Liverpool and learnt about the history, evolving from the Seaman’s Mission. We had glorious sunshine in for the afternoon tea and Beetle Drive in the Glasshouse at Burton Manor, more cakes and laughter! A raffle raised funds to provide much needed personal items for women at some Wirral based shelters. The Ranger at Dibbinsdale led an interesting walk around the Nature Reserve. The walking group also had walks around Bidston Hill and Parkgate. Recent meals took us to Kri Kri in Neston and Ego, in Heswall, the craft, book and poetry groups met as usual and more theatre trips are planned. At the May meeting there was a fabulous “Celebration of Talent “ where members showed a wonderful diverse range of crafts from photography, sewing, glasswork, embroidery and painting. We also had a serious debate about the care of dementia sufferers in hospital and another regarding the amount of food wasted. Meetings take place at St Michael’s Church, on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30. Visitors are welcome

Theatre group rake in the awards In the last two weeks Neston’s Little Actors Theatre Company has received two awards for the work they do in the community. In April the Theatre Club (for 5-11 year olds) participated in the Leverhulme Drama Festival with a new play called ‘Penny and Franc’. Written by Mike Lockley the play shows how World War 1 impacted on the lives of children. The group was awarded the Val Marshall Trophy for Artistic Endeavour. There were three best actors nominations for Evie (11), Samuel (10) and Matthew (10). Also, the group came second overall in the under 12s category with 68 points. On the 11th May at Chester Town Hall Little Actors received the Highly Commended Award from Cheshire West Voluntary Arts for their delivery of performing arts activities in Neston. The ceremony was attended by Artistic Director Samantha Giblin, Trustee Sue Kendall, Jonathan (15) and Joshua Stevens (12) (both of InterACT Youth Theatre and Neston Young Writers). The award was presented by the Sheriff of Chester. Samantha is delighted that Little Actors creative work was acknowledged in this way for the second year running. This brings the total to four awards in just two years. Little Actors is very proud that they are offering such a high quality of professionally led performing arts activities in Neston. Due to a series of funded 50% discounts LATC promotes access for all and inclusion to all the activities. There are drama, singing and dance workshops for children from 2 1/2 up to 19, Neston Young Writers for 13-19 year olds and also adult dance and tap classes. All workshops take place at the NC&YC Burton Road. Future plans for 2016-17 include a summer course in August, National Theatre Connections, the Leverhulme Drama Festival, LAMDA exams, a talent showcase and lots of appearances at Neston’s community events. For details visit the web site at www.littleactorstheatre.com. l Cllr Louise Gittins and members of LATC with the award.

Countdown to Neston Village Fair It’s a little over a month until the Neston Village Fair and the organisers are already finalising what should be an exciting event. The event takes place at Comrades’ Field, behind the church on The High Street, Neston, 1-4.30pm on Saturday 2nd July. It’s one of the most well supported events in this area, the place for bargains and excellent family fun. The Fair supports all the local charities and good causes who have stalls and raise their much needed funds at the Fair. The entry fee is still £1, with children under 16 free. The Dream Stage featuring by popular demand the Bethania Puppets will be held in the brand new marquees funded by the Cheshire Community Foundation and Neston Town Council; and old favourites too – the Assault Course, Bungee Run, Bouncy Castle, and of course the Classic Cars. There will be entertainment all afternoon from the local schools, choirs and dancers. We are having the fabulous Parkgate Jazz Band and Neston Strummers There are also the usual stalls – tea and beer tents, cakes, BBQ, hotdogs, candy floss, Junk & Disorderly and Bric-a-brac, books, Hamper Raffles, Craft Stalls and much more. The prize in the grand raffle is an overnight stay for two people at Craxton Wood. 44 To advertise call 01244 350398
