Look what chemistry did for Alan A man from Little Neston has written a book charting how his struggles at school failed to stop him succeeding as a top scientist. Alan Heaton’s autobiography ‘Look what Chemistry did for me’ shows that despite failure early in life it is amazing just what can be achieved with determination, hard work and grasping opportunities when they arise. Hopefully it can inspire others in this situation. It charts Alan’s life from failure at study at school to the top of the academic tree as Professor and Head of Chemistry at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). On the beat with Nordic walkers The Nordic Walkers who meet up at 2pm on Wednesdays at Stanney Fields Park, on Hinderton Road, were joined by Neston police recently.

More success for Neston youth theatre InterACT Youth Theatre which meets at Neston Community and Youth Centre, has again scooped awards at the Leverhulme Drama Festival for 2018. With their play â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The Blue Electric Windâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; by Brad Birch they won the Val Marshall Trophy for Artistic Endeavour. Also actors Oliver Cunliffe (14) and Flo Raven (12) were joint Best Supporting Actors with Matthew Latham (12) and Joshua Stevens (14) as joint runners up in the Best Actor category. The play was presented as part of National Theatre Connections and was premiered at Neston Civic Hall in March. The play then performed in the under 16s category of the Leverhulme Drama Festival at the Gladstone Theatre in Port Sunlight. Finally, as part of National Theatre Connections, the group performed at the professional venue The Lowry, Salford Quays. New members are always welcome and this term will see the group doing workshops in theatre skills and improvisation as well as some members doing LAMDA exams. Planning for Parkgate Carnival on Sunday 8th July has been progressing brilliantly and the event programme has now been finalised. Visitors will be able to enjoy a huge range of musical talent, creative performers, children’s amusements and a showcase of delicious artisan foods and fine wares from some of the most talented artists and crafters in the area. In addition to returning favourites, the Carnival has new features including a sports village, prosecco bar, a lifestyle hub, a coffee bar and an art and craft competition offering an array of food, drink, fun and opportunities. All this has been possible due to the amazing support of local business sponsors and other businesses who have helped out. The intention with the 2018 Carnival is to raise funds to take more children with life limiting illnesses on a holiday of a lifetime making an identifiable difference to their wellbeing. Whenever a person dies, somebody has to put their affairs in order, deal with any inheritance tax and ensure that the beneficiaries get what they are due from the estate. If there is a Will, this person is known as the executor. If the person has died without making a Will (or if the Will is not deemed legal) then the person is said to have died intestate then intestacy rules apply in this situation and the person dealing with the estate is known as the administrator.

I just can't get MOTIVATED! We all know that first session in gym, that first fitness class or that first run especially after a long time being away is always the hardest! So, what can you do to ensure you stop making excuses and start making those positive changes. My first bit of advice would be to set a realistic goal! No use saying I’ll run a marathon in 2 months when you haven’t moved for years, nor is setting a target of 3 stone weight loss when your cupboard is full of cakes and biscuits. Start off with baby steps, so for example, you might start with ‘this week my target is to cut out crisps and cakes’ once this target is achieved add on another small goal. ‘ This week Ill increase my water intake etc’ With weight loss it’s so important that you do BOTH exercise and diet together. You will get smaller just dieting but when you’re left with saggy skin and you’re still out of breath getting up the stairs what’s the point! Exercise has a huge impact to all aspects in day to day life, whether it’s your mental state, reducing your risk of high blood pressure, improving your flexibility the list is endless! So, there is no time like the present to start. Exercise classes on your own can be daunting but find something you’ll enjoy and use this as a tool to meet new people, get stuck in and give it your all. In group exercise using others as a tool to ensure you keep going, if group exercise isn’t for you try doing your own workouts at home or getting a personal trainer. Dieting is the part of getting fit most find the hardest, sticking to healthy foods especially at the weekends can be tricky! I believe it’s not about cutting everything out just to have everything in moderation. Carbohydrates

are always labelled as the baddie of the food groups yet eaten properly can be a good tool. It’s the refined carbs that you have to watch, cakes, crisps, sugary snacks are the bad foods. Eating the healthy carbs such as vegetables, fruits and whole grain cereals etc are a perfect way of getting nutrients in and getting a balanced diet. Avoid diets that are all protein, or all liquids they can have adverse effects on your body. A diet however high in protein is what I advise all my clients to eat. A typical day would be eggs and 1 small slice of granary bread for breakfast, handful of almonds for a snack, dinner chicken salad, followed by a Greek yoghurt, afternoon snack a small piece of fruit, evening meal pork/ chicken stir fry. Get yourself a food and exercise diary note all the activity you do throughout the day and use this as a guide of where you can improve. Write down your monthly targets and keep track of good and bad days. Seeing what you actually consume is a great way of monitoring your calorie intake. GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Blooms for June T

here are many beautiful perennials flowering in June and it is difficult to choose which ones to have in the garden.

I would love to have delphiniums but the slugs get them in my heavy soil. However, if you can keep the slugs off, they can pop up each year with tall spires of rich blue, pink or white flowers. In autumn many will flower again if you cut the dead flowering spikes off in summer. Another reliable perennial for damper soils are the magnificent Rodgersias with their large Horse Chestnut shaped leaves and tall robust stems with white or red flowers. I saw them at Dunham Massey garden last year growing with huge Alliums. Alliums will flower each year and are often teamed with roses. Will thrive in heavier well drained soils and are especially good in drier borders. Shrubs can form the backbone of a border so why not indulge in a Deutzia. A small on Deutzia Gracilis has little white flowers or Rosealind a taller shrub to 1m with rich pink clusters of flowers. They will grow in sun or lights shade and any soil provided it is not dry. For a larger shrub or small tree one of my favourites are the Sambucus or Elderflower with the purple or golden foliage. Sambucus Black Beauty likes a damp heavy soil and has pink flowerheads in early summer. Make Elderflower cordial with the flowers and it will be pink! Roses are centre stage in June so make sure you feed them well with a proprietary rose feed, spray with soapy water to remove an excess of whitefly and keep dead heading them. Work to be done in the garden includes trimming Privet and Box hedging. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering. Keep climbing roses and clematis tied in and under control. Friends of Hadlow Road Station The platform brickwork and edging on the far platform has been slightly delayed as we need to check if planning/building permission is required before work can start following a meeting with CW&C’s Conservation Officer. Four trees were cut down on 10th/ & 11th May by Chester Zoo so we hope the animals enjoy their treat. These trees were removed from the platform top to open up the platform ready for re-instatement of that platform top in future. The tree stumps will be removed next. Many thanks to Willaston WI who have kindly offered to donate a tree and plant it at the station. A few tree varieties have been suggested by the CW&C Ranger so we await the Willaston WI’s tree selection from the options provided. 75 top grade hardwood sleepers have been ordered ready for the existing track to be re-laid and these should be delivered before the end of May and this will then be followed by putting down recycled track ballast. The team are working on refurbishing the sack trolley, (which is under cover offsite), and this refurbishment is progressing well. It will be completed shortly and will then be secured safely onto the station platform before the 2nd trolley on the platform will be refurbished. In addition, the large Hadlow Road Station sign is being replaced as the timber has split and the paint has come off. The large timber gates to enter the car park and other fences are rotten and CW&C have agreed to repair the gates and fencing shortly subject to budget funding. At the moment we are second on votes/tokens at Tesco Heswall so we need all the support we can get. Thank you. Collecting for Christian Aid Volunteers have been collecting house-to-house during Christian Aid Week in May. Gordale Garden Centre invited the group to hold a bucket collection which produced £356. Treasurer Eileen Ward said: “Following the closure of the last bank in Neston, we now have an arrangement with Christian Aid to let us pay in cash at Post Offices. The staff at Little Neston Post Office are very helpful, and they are open longer than high street banks. The money is al-ready with Christian Aid, helping the poorest people in the world.” The annual Christian Aid service was held at St Thomas’ Church, Parkgate, on Sunday 13th May when the curate Rev Josh Askwith led the service.
