The first arts market is on Saturday 5th March and will coincide with a Fairtrade breakfast. Woodfall pupils make history! The Year 2 pupils at Woodfall Primary School enjoyed a Living History Day, coming to school dressed as a character from history, including Boudicca and Marie Curie! As part of the day the children took part in numerous activities including an archaeological dig and examined artefacts from the past. Rich rewards for Fairtrade The Neston Fairtrade Town Steering Group has been contacting all local catering outlets to see if they serve or will serve some Fairtrade refreshments. The group was delighted to find that Rich Coffee at Neston’s Friday Market is 100% Fairtrade and most of his tea is too. Richard Lennox said most of his customers request Fairtrade and he believes ‘a good day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.’ On Saturday 5th March there will be a Fairtrade breakfast from 10am-2pm at the Neston Town Hall Market. l Companionship

Wills and Lasting Power of Attorneys We all put great efforts in protecting what we value; our families, our homes, our possessions, but what about protecting our wishes? Many people put off, or do not make a Will because they think their financial affairs are straightforward, but a Will is about far more than financial matters. Neston’s new school building set to open in autumn 2017 PROGRESS on the new building project at Neston High School has taken a landmark step forward with the completion of the traditional ground-breaking ceremony which was arranged to coincide with the 58th anniversary of the opening of the existing school. Present at the ceremony were members of the governing body, the headteacher Steven Dool, members of the senior leadership team together with students. They were joined by special guest David Burkey, who had been present at the opening of the original school in 1958 and was one of the first students through the doors of the newly opened building and appointed as one of the first prefects. Mr Burkey said: “This is a very special day for the school and for the whole of the community; Neston is very fortunate to be benefiting from such a significant investment. Representing the governing body were chairman Kevin Mothersdale and Ian Mellor who has been working closely with deputy head Colin Randerson and business manager Tina Phillips on the new build project since its inception almost five years ago. It will also provide sports and fitness facilities including two activity studios and ICT rich areas for library, learning resource centre and sixth form study area. “We are really looking forward to enjoying the increased spaces for non-educational use, such as our new 450 square metre dining room, an outside dining area, an eco-garden and improved parking facilities for staff and visitors,” said Mr Dool. “It will be fantastic watching the new building grow over the next 18 months as we continue to work on the existing site, well away from the construction site.”

Since the first event we have had much interest from the artist community who are keen to come along and take part in our new market in 2016.” A fair-trade breakfast event will be running in conjunction with the launch market in March. The market will be held on the first Saturday of the month inside Neston Town Hall between 10am and 2pm. Improvements were made over two years ago, including new paving stones, benches and litter bins as well as improved information boards. But late last year, as part of the council’s routine inspection, officers noticed that some of the paving stones were beginning to break up. This should not have happened so a decision was taken to request the relaying of all the landscaping by the original supplier of the paving. Cllr Martin Barker, said: “We believe the paving stones were sub-standard and have successfully negotiated the replacement of the stones at no cost to the council. Stage is set for inaugural choir festival NESTON will be the destination for choirs from all over the North West of England in April, as they come together for the inaugural North West Choir Fest. The brainchild of Hip & Harmony CICâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Creative Director Paula Prytherch, the festival at Neston High School is believed to be the only one of its kind in the region. It will be a non-competitive event, bringing like-minded people together to sing, with workshops leading to a mass performance of material learned on the day, plus the opportunity for all participating choirs to share performances of their own material. Paula said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We would like North West Choir Fest to become an annual fixture for choirs throughout the region. We are confident that with the experience Hip & Harmony CIC has with community arts projects, alongside the skills of the practitioners we have engaged, the event will be great day and we are all looking forward to it immensely.â&#x20AC;? It is anticipated that around 10-15 choirs will participate, with bookings currently being taken on a first come first served basis. All community choirs and singing groups are welcome to take part, as are individuals if they do not currently belong to a choir that will be participating. Material in the workshops will be taught by ear, so an ability to read music is not required. The event will take place on Sunday 24th April. Dismay as thieves target Burton Manor glasshouse THE Friends of Burton Manor Gardens recently received a prestigious award from the Chester Civic Trust for the Restoration of their Edwardian glasshouse. However celebrations were short lived when thieves broke in and stole over ÂŁ1,000 worth of garden machinery from their locked store room. It was a hard blow to the charity as the loss was not covered by insurance and they will have to find funds for increased security. The Friends who have been on site for many years received a grant of around ÂŁ500k from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore the glasshouse and walled garden which their volunteers more than match funded with their hours worked. Since the glasshouse was opened in 2011 the volunteers have also restored a Victorian orchard and much of the historic gardens attributed to Thomas Mawson, however it gets more difficult to operate on a site where the historic buildings are falling into disrepair due to neglect. The group have had a difficult year working under the threat of the site being sold to developers whose plans are not sympathetic of its historic value or respecting that it is registered as a community asset with the local authority. However, they have formed a limited company which, with the co-operation of a local developer, has resubmitted a community bid to purchase from the owners Liverpool City Council. Burton Manor and its grounds have always had great support from the wider community and the many groups that use it for activities, it is hoped that a community bid to purchase will be successful and the plans for the site which achieved over 90 per cent approval at a public consultation can be implemented in order to achieve a sustainable future for this historic site. NESTON town councillors have been discussing the merits of introducing a 20mph speed limit across more of the area. Councillor Phil Lloyd, who chairs the Planning and Environment (P&E) Committee said: “Road safety is an important issue in Neston and we urge the people of our town to take this opportunity to let their views be known to Cheshire West either by contacting local CWaC councillors or Members of Neston Town Council. We are concerned that the map issued by CWaC shows that current arrangements are not clear, for example in suggesting that Raby Park Road is not subject to a 20 mph limit when it is – and we are currently asking for the reinstatement of the road humps that help to sustain that limit.” Neston Town Council urges local residents to comment on the extension of the 20 mph limit – as it currently operates in Parkgate to all residential areas.

The following crimes were reported to police in Neston recently: Parkgate Road – A Mitsubishi 4x4, parked at Craxton Wood Hotel had a window smashed. Allans Meadow – Windows were smashed on a Fiat Punto, parked at the road side. The Looms – Loose change was stolen from an unlocked Volkswagen T-Sporter motor caravan. The Priory – A three-wheel Motability walker, with shopping bag attached, was taken from a porch. Allans Meadow – The outer pane of a double glazed window was smashed. Mayfield Gardens – Pea netting, securing the boundary in the back garden was cut. Neston High School – A pellet gun is believed to have been used to damage a pane of glass which had only just been repaired. Burton – Gardening equipment was stolen from a storage area within the grounds of Burton Manor. Sunningdale Way – Two geese were taken from a garden shed. Wesley visit plaque unveiled TWO DOZEN people braved strong winds and rain in Parkgate Road for the unveiling and dedication of the new plaque commemorating the visit by John Wesley in 1762. Edward Hilditch, Chairman of Burton and Neston History Society, quoted from John Wesley’s journal. Parkgate was a passenger port for Ireland and he travelled this route many times. He recorded in his journal for the 1st April 1762. ‘I rode to Parkgate and found several ships, but the wind was contrary. I preached at five in the small house they have just built; and the hearers were remarkably serious. I gave notice of preaching at five in the morning. But at half-hour after four one brought us word that the wind was come fair, and Captain Jordan would sail in less than an hour. We were soon in the ship, wherein we found about three score passengers. The sun shone bright, the wind was moderate, the sea smooth, and we wanted nothing but room to stir ourselves; the cabin being filled with hops, so that we could not get into it but by climbing over them on our hands and knees.’ This Methodist Chapel remained in use until 1860. When a new Presbyterian Church was built in 1884, now the United Reformed Church, the old building was no longer used and was demolished some years later.

The Mayor of Neston, Mike Shipman, recalled that 30 years ago, the old plaque had been vandalised, and Susan Chambers, then secretary of Neston Civic Society, arranged for its reinstatement. The wall on which it was mounted was taken down in 2015 in order to build Belvedere Park, and Steve Quicke of Neston Civic Society designed a new slate plaque, paid for from a bequest to Neston Civic Society from Ruby Holloway. Methodist Minister, Reverend Marcus Torchon and the Mayor then performed the unveiling (above). Rob Ward, Chairman of Neston Civic Society, thanked John Macbryde and Carol Russell from Macbryde Homes for installing the new plaque. Among those present were Rev Gilbert Braithwaite, a keen student of the history of John Wesley, and Rev Hilary Bell from the nearby Parkgate and Neston United Reformed Church. The idea for the ceremony came from local Methodist John Crowther. l The next meeting of Neston Civic Society will be at 7.30pm on Thursday 17th March at the United Reformed Church Hall, Moorside Lane, Neston, when Adrian Sumner will give a talk on The Art and Architecture of St Petersburg. Visitors and new members are welcome.

Sunday 6th and 13th March Clean for the Queen, a country-wide project set up by the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ association to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Queen.
