Preparations are well under way for Neston Ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Day on 7th June, and this year funding has been agreed for a showcase for local talent. Memorial unveiled to Neston war hero A memorial plaque has been unveiled to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the award of a Victoria Cross to Neston man Lt Col Christopher Bushell. The Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, David Briggs joined the Mayor of Neston, Cllr Pat Kynaston, MP Justin Madders, Cheshire West & Chester Councillors, Neston Town Councillors and the Curator of the Surrey Infantry Museum, together with community groups, to unveil the plaque within the railed area of the War Memorial. Almost 50 descendants of Christopher Bushell travelled from as far away as France to take part in the church service which preceded the unveiling and the local branch of the British Legion saluted Lt Col Bushell with the Last Post and dipped standards.

Local residents stood with the family to observe a minuteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s silence. The Junior Mayor and Deputy Junior Mayor represented the youth of Neston at the ceremony. Following the formal ceremony guests and local residents took the opportunity to see the replica medals, displayed on an original regimental drum, within a glass case set up in the church. The cover cloth will be displayed in Neston prior to being donated to the Surrey Museum to join the original medals. Talent showcase

There will be an extra dimension to Neston Ladies Day on Thursday 7th June. Neston Town Council has approved a grant application by the Hip and Harmony choir to provide a showcase for local talent and community art groups, attracting friends and families in support of the artists. Walkers survive the wet and windy weather A total of 32 people - and several dogs - took part in the traditional sponsored Christian Aid walk, on a cold, windy and sometimes snowy day. Margaret Heibel and Cheryl Ellis served hot drinks and snacks at the Gayton half-way stop. Back at the United Reformed Church, walkers enjoyed home-made soup, and home-baked bread. Lynne Vaughan said: “We are so grateful for the generosity of those who donated. The money raised goes directly to our partners who need expertise, or cash grants to organise life enhancing projects for the most vulnerable people on the planet.” A collection at Aldi raised £514.48 and a further collection will take place on Saturday 12th May at Gordale and during Christian Aid week from 13th-19th May. On Sunday 13th May the Christian Aid service will be at St Thomas’ Church, Parkgate at 6.30pm. Convicts spruce up Wirral Way Offenders carrying out Community Payback along an idyllic stretch of disused railway have been praised by Cheshire West and Chester Council for improving the popular path. Community Payback is a sentence made by the court that involves people working for a period of time under the supervision of probation on tasks that benefit local areas. Teams of up to eight people doing unpaid work have shifted tonnes of mud, leaves and silt that had obscured swathes of the route on the Wirral Way, near Lees Lane, Little Neston. The work started last October, and has been supervised by the Cheshire & Greater Manchester Community Rehabilitation Company’s Community Payback Supervisor, Val Barker. The Council’s Director of Place Operations, Maria Byrne said: “Our Greenspaces Team has a long-standing partnership with the Community Payback Team and the arrangement has produced excellent results. I’m very grateful to everyone who has been involved with

the work near Lees Lane, they have done a great job.” Jack, who was sentenced to 70 hours unpaid work, said: “It’s nice that what we are doing is appreciated. “I’d obviously prefer not to be here, I’m doing this as well as my job so I’ve lost a lot of free time, but I am happy getting stuck into it and am pleased it is helping the area.” Val said: “We’ve a really good relationship with the Council and have been happy to get stuck into this task. It’s a beautiful stretch, but sadly – as well as the silt – a fair amount of litter had been dropped as well, but we’ve shifted that too. “People on Community Payback have worked hard and many passers-by have thanked them for their efforts. I am delighted that they have been praised for a job well done.” Offenders across this region carry out more than half a million hours of unpaid work every year.

Hoops team win shoot-out St Winefride’s basketball team have enjoyed more success, winning the second round of the Cheshire schools competition. Improvements at Sytchcroft Park Sytchcroft Park is to be transformed by a new play area and landscaping. Cheshire West and Chester Council, Neston Town Council and partners have secured funding to improve the site. The funding will now be spent on a new play area, multi-use games area, extra footpaths and wider landscaping in the park. CCTV and lighting improvements will be installed on the existing cycle path through the site to Neston Station. Neston High School and Neston Primary School will be asked to help draw up a community art project for the site. Maria Byrne, from Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “On behalf of the partnership, I am delighted to report the fantastic response to the call to improve this area of Neston. We have secured significant funding from a variety of contributors to make a real difference to the park. “We will now work together to deliver the plan and we are excited at the prospect of a revamped community space this coming autumn.” The Council and Neston Town Council carried out a public consultation in 2016 and 2017, presenting ideas on how to improve the whole Sytchcroft site. Spring is here

After a long cold winter we can welcome a variety of trees, shrubs and perennials that flower in May.

Laburnum x watereri is a smallish tree (4 to 8 metres tall) with long racemes of bright yellow flowers in late spring. Note that all parts of the tree are poisonous including the seeds so not one to plant where small children or animals are around. However the flowers are stunning and if you had time to train over an arch you could have a mini Laburnum tunnel similar to the famous one at Bodnant gardens. Clematis Montana is a climber, very vigorous and can drape itself over 4 fence panels! It is covered in pink or white flowers which are slightly scented and will flower in sun or shade. Best in a moisture retentive soil and if it gets too large, take the shears to it immediately after flowering. Shrubs flowering in May include Spirea Goldflame or Golden Princess. These low growing mounded shrubs are good in sun or partial shade and any soil. The new foliage has orange or yellow leaves in early spring and bright pink flowers in summer. Perennials include the large flowered Paeonies in flower in May. They take time to clump up but look stunning. Will grow in sun or part shade and best in moisture retentive soils. Put plant supports around the foliage to keep it from falling over. On a smaller scale, the Silene vulgaris or Bladder Campion is perfect for the edge of a rockery or raised bed in sun. You can see it flowering on cliff paths in this country but it can do well in gardens too. Jobs to be doing in the garden in May include doing the Chelsea Chop! Perennials that flower later in the season such as Heleniums or Astrantias can be cut back to delay flowering. If you have 2 plants cut one back and leave the other to extend the season. Put straw around Strawberries to protect the fruit. Keep your potatoes earthed up to improve yields and continue to plant succession of salad seeds like lettuce and radishes for a continuous supply. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Framley in Neston is open on 7th May with lovely mature woodland underplanted for spring, paths around the 5 acre garden will take you to a sunken garden and an intriguing pond in the woodland. Tirley Garth near Tarporley is open on the afternoon of 13th and 20th May. This Arts and Crafts garden has 20 acres to explore, including thousands of Rhododendrons and Azaleas out in May.
