Woodfall pupils make a quacking effort for appeal! Woodfall Rotakids have started supporting their new charity The BabyGrow Appeal at the Countess of Chester Hospital. They sold mini ducks as part of the Duck Race, in Chester, in September and raised £200. Some of the Rotakids and other pupils also went along to the race to collect for the charity and support Woodlina the Woodfall Duck. Deputy headteacher Mrs Bramham collected the trophy on behalf of ‘Woodlina’ who was voted the most popular duck on Facebook. The Rotakids have many exciting adventures planned this year and are very grateful to all the children, parents and staff for their support.

CRIMEFILE CRIMES reported to the police in Neston recently include: Shakespeare Road – a wheelie bin was used to smash a ground floor double glazed window. Coniston Road – A green plastic pump-action plant sprayer was taken from the back garden of a house. Brook Street – A black and green, 125cc motorbike was stolen from the roadside and found later in Birkenhead. Neston Road, Little Neston – A window was smashed on a Seat Leon, parked at the Wheatsheaf pub. The Court – A Ford Ka was scratched along the bonnet. Woodbank Road – All the windows were smashed on a Vauxhall Astra which was parked on roadside for four days. Allans Meadow – A group of youths walking along the road kicked out at cars as they passed. The Parade, Parkgate – The back window was smashed of a Toyota Yaris, parked at the Boathouse.

ALAN Founds and Tom Peters have done brilliantly to win the British F2 Sidecar Championship. You can read more about the Little Neston team’s success in this month’s magazine.

Congratulations to the Neston charity Northern Lights for winning a special award. Also, well done to Neston Civic Society and the Redcliffe Dental Practice for maintaining a flower bed in Little Neston which has won a community prize.

Railway signal box re-opening evokes memories of a bygone age WITH balmy temperatures and the brass band playing, visitors to the old railway station were transported back to glorious summers of the 1950s. But this was September 2015 and the venue was Hadlow Road Station, in Willaston. Almost 200 visitors were there for the special event to mark the refurbishment of the old signal box and to begin the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the station next year. Many enjoyed the performance by the Scratch Brass Quintet playing an assortment of tunes including Ticket to Ride by the Beatles, Eine Kleine Nachtmusic, Purcell Trumpet and Happy Birthday for Mrs Goodall and Mr Ted Welsh celebrating 87 and 94th birthdays respectively. Mr Welsh worked at the Station Signal Box in 1937. Wilf Wilson visited the re-opening after his great endeavours to recover the Signal Box for reinstatement in the early days of the Wirral Way at Hadlow Road. Occasional steam sounds echoed around the platforms like those from memories from the station in the 1950s. The Hadlow Green Singers sang as we all enjoyed teas and cakes on the platforms to Chattanooga ChooTed Welsh with Deputy Mayor Cllr Hogg Choo and an extra

special treat was the adaptation of Flanders and Swann’s; On the Slow Train with the closing lines adapted to mention Hadlow Road Station. Visitors were served cakes by the Guides and escorted to the signal box by the Scouts; “Railway Children” volunteers had made cakes and teas to sell from the Station Office. Society chairwoman Chris Hampshire said: “Work at the station continues as we intend to deliver further improvements to the station over the coming months.” Introducing Ellesmere Port Deputy Mayor Myles Hogg who had poignantly adapted one of Sir Winston Churchill’s most famous speeches to thank the volunteers for the beginnings; projects and activities started around the station. The Deputy Mayor and Mr Ted Welsh both cut the commemorative ribbon. The event was a great success as noted in several comments from visitors: The society now look forward to more clear ups around the station whilst they prepare for Santa’s Grotto on 13th December and the 150th anniversary of opening on 1st October 2016.

Fabulous award for Neston charity A NESTON charity which organises once in a lifetime trips for terminally ill children has been given a prestigious award. The volunteers from Northern Lights were presented with The Queens Award for Voluntary Service by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire, David Briggs. It is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. Northern Lights, one of only two charities within Cheshire to have received this award in 2015, provide holidays to meet Father Christmas in Lapland for children with life limiting illnesses. The committee of Northern Lights were joined for an afternoon tea by the deputy Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Angela Claydon, the Mayor of Neston Cllr Mike Shipman, Cllr Martin Barker, friends, family and supporters at Neston Cricket Club. Karen said, after the presentation: â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is an honour to receive such recognition for the work of the charity and as a committee we are very proud to hold this award and would like to thank everyone who had made this possible. Without those people who have raised funds for the charity over the 28 years since it was founded, the volunteers who help with our events and all those involved in taking the children to Lapland, we would not be able to provide these wonderful holidays. We thank everyone involved and hope that we can continue to provide these holidays of a lifetime in memory of Christopher for years to come. Sidecar pair crowned British champions

A SIDECAR duo from Little Neston have had a phenomenally successful year, winning the British title along the way. Team Founds Racing are a F2 Sidecar team from Little Neston. The team, consisting of driver Alan Founds and passenger Tom Peters, won the ACU British F2 Sidecar Championship, finishing third in the FIM World Championship and at only their second year to the Isle Of Man TT Races saw them achieve an incredible 5th place, averaging laps at 112mph. The British F2 Championship consists of six rounds with two races at each round. The first round took place at the local track of Oulton Park where they were runners up to championship rival John Holden (TT winner and three times British champion). It was only in round two at Silverstone where they took their first win of the year and also a 2nd in race two. The team then headed off to the Isle of Man TT races for their second year, gaining a personal best of 5th with a race time of 112mph on the famous mountain course. Once back home the team continued their fight for the British Championship with a 3rd and 4th at Castle Coombe and a double race win in very contrasting conditions at Angleseyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Track Mon. 14 To advertise call 01244 350398

Before the last two rounds, Team Founds moved on to the continent to race in the FIM world F2 Championship in Oschersleben German. After some close racing they came home third and received the World Championship Bronze medal. Back home with two rounds to go it was time to pack up and of to Cadwell Park for the fifth round of the British Championship. With the championship in grasp, the results werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t what the team had been hoping for with a 3rd in race 1 and a frustrating DNF in race two caused by a puncture in the rear tyre. Heading off to the final round at Croft, Team Founds were still leading the championship but with a very close 7.5 points clear from second. The team clinched the championship with two solid results and beating their championship rivals across the finish line. Alan and Tom were officially crowned British Champions. NESS AND LITTLE NESTON WI THINGS are calming down now after the excitement of the London events, Margaret McQuair and Sue Tarbath enjoyed the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, and Carolyn Arrowsmith was the delegate at the Centenary AGM at the Albert Hall. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Princess Royal and the Countess of Wessex were present which made the conference all the more Members enjoyed two canal trips in August, although the weather was kinder on the first outing, on the second the weather was definitely more suitable for ducks! A walker’s quiz covering some of Liverpool’s historic buildings proved informative and fun, unearthing unusual facts and sights, truly a fascinating city. September’s speaker was an inspirational young woman, Katie Bushell, who has worked tirelessly to support young homeless orphans in Malawi. Katie, a teacher in Liverpool whose mother is a WI member, has founded several foster homes in Malawi and built a school for the village to enhance the outlook for these youngsters. She has been “hands on “with the project , building and teaching in Malawi as well as fund raising here to finance the undertaking , an enormous project of which she should be very proud. In September, on designated WI Day, we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea, and then much hilarity when June Corner enlightened us with her unique collection of “knickers through the ages “, nobody thought that underwear could be so funny or outrageous, or in some cases so uncomfortable. NESTON Civic Society has used part of a generous bequest from Mrs Ruby Holloway to install a plaque commemorating a visit by John Wesley to Neston in 1762. The plaque replaces one installed by the Society 30 years ago. It is one of the points on the Neston Town Trail, and can be seen in Parkgate Road between Neston Library and Moorside Lane. l The next meeting will be on 19th November at the United Reformed Church Hall, Moorside Lane. Students explore Central America YEAR 12/13 students from Neston High School completed a 2 week expedition in Honduras. The expedition led by teachers Sarah Westoby and John Hannibal was an amazing, challenging experience. The group spent one week trekking and camping in the mountainous tropical rainforest of Cusuco National Park. Students joined scientists to monitor species diversity and carbon dioxide levels locked into the rainforest. The second week was spent at the Marine Research Centre, on the island of Utilia students studied the Coral Reef ecology and were able to snorkel and scuba dive. trip was not without its challenges, hiking for five hours with a heavy backpack in intense heat was the hardest thing I’ve had to do. “It was worth it once we reached camp, where we slept in hammocks and woke up to the forest canopy. In the second week at Utilia, I achieved certified open water diver status.” Alfie Mayhew added: “We learnt techniques to survey birds, hepatofauna and invertebrates, as well as how to live and hike in a jungle.” Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities, who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research expeditions.
