PEOPLE using quad bikes made a real mess of the Neston Recreation football pitch. The muddy tracks left by the off-road bikes meant that the young players of Neston Nomads couldn’t play. You can read more in this month’s edition. We also have news from Bishop Wilson and Neston Primary Schools, the refurbished red phone kiosk at Hadlow Road, crimefile, Neston Players, an update on the changes at Neston Town Council, the what’s on guide, business directory and much more.

Red phone box returns to Hadlow Road A refurbished red telephone box has made a welcome return to the platform at Willaston’s Hadlow Road Railway Station. The Friends group had organised for the dilapidated phone box to be spruced up thanks to various grants including a £2,000 Rural Support grant; a £1,000 Cheshire Community Foundation grant; £1,277 allocated from the New Homes Bonus; a £500 grant from Cllr Myles Hogg’s CWaC fund plus £677 provided from Friends’ own funds. A number of development projects continue to be delivered including the east section of the south platform that has the grass growing strongly while planting to encourage wildlife is expected to be undertaken early November. The facing brickwork of this platform edge will be rebuilt with a top similar to the platform at Thurstaston while eco-friendly picnic tables and benches are being sourced for fitting at Hadlow Road Station. Finally, an Audio Visual (AV) system is being purchased for fitting to the waiting room wall. This AV system will show a continually rolling display of historic and up to date pictures and videos related to Hadlow Road Station that can be viewed whenever the waiting room is open to the public. 8 To advertise call 01244 350398

Six out and five in at Neston Town Council IT’S all change at Neston Town Council this year with many well-known councillors standing down and new faces arriving. Since the annual meeting back in May, the council has seen several changes. Those who have left: Cllr James Wilkie, who had been with the council for some years, undertook an active role in many aspects of the Council and was the lead councillor at the time of the referendum for the neighbourhood plan. Cllr Mike Shipman (right) had been a Councillor since the formation of the Council in 2009 and had attended at the inaugural meetings. During his time he has seen the evolvement of the Council and overseen many of its restructures. Cllr Shipman was mayor for the last two council years prior to his resignation in May. Cllr Abdul Jilani was also a founder member of the council and despite a busy schedule, took an active part in debate when in attendance at both full council and at committee meetings on which he served. He has now moved out of the area. Councillor Kay Loch (right) served in a dual role for a period of time as borough councillor and an active town councillor. She has now decided to devote more of her time to her family. 12 To advertise call 01244 350398

Cllr Angus Montgomery served for a short spell on the town council but due to work commitments was unable to continue. More recently Cllr Sue Chambers (right), who had represented Parkgate Ward has resigned. It is hoped that she will work alongside the council with her busy community group commitments. The vacancy for Parkgate Ward has not yet been filled. The Council has welcomed, by co-option; Councillor Howe to represent Riverside Ward; Councillors Hine and Yarker to represent Little Neston Ward; Councillor Warner to represent Neston Ward and Councillor Chapman as the representative for Ness Ward. Council chairwoman Cllr Pat Kynaston said: “A decision to serve the community requires a significant commitment and all the exmembers have worked actively to improve the local environment and facilities for residents of the Parish. Whilst this can at times be a frustrating experience, we hope that it has also been an enjoyable and rewarding one. “These changes mean that we have seen an influx of new members onto the Council, several of them younger than our previously mature age range, and this will bring different viewpoints to our debates.”

Active Cheshire Staff Elly Glithero, Duncan Setterington, Councillor Louise Gittins, ‘Active Archie’ and pupils

Pupils take their first steps to fitness Pupils and staff at Neston Primary School launched their ‘Smile for a Mile’ project recently. The children enjoyed the school launch day thanks to Active Cheshire and Cheshire West and Chester Council, Councillor Louise Gittins and ‘Active Archie’ The ‘Smile for a Mile project was created to persuade primary schools across the UK to incorporate a daily one-mile run or walk into their timetables, to improve children’s health. Cheshire West & Chester Council is encouraging all primary schools across the borough to sign up. Neston Primary School has taken up the daily challenge, putting their own spin on the pioneering scheme and urging others to follow suit. PE leader Sarah Whitley said: “It adds to the school’s values and we believe it helps fitness and well-being, as well as pupils’ energy levels during lessons”. “It is not only about competing against each other, but yourself, as you try to reach a goal. It also helps teach children about resilience; to keep going even when it is tough.” The Smile for a Mile project has been credited with improving children’s focus, behaviour and attainment, reducing obesity levels and helping mental health issues. 16 To advertise call 01244 350398

Ness and Little Neston WI Autumn is here and thoughts turn to Christmas events but we have had much to enjoy in the last few months. Several members enjoyed a fabulous meal and cruise from the Mill Boat, Chester, and again at 1 Mostyn Square. Neston Players “ For the love of it “ musical was well supported, as was Shirley Valentine at the Floral Pavillion. The Craft Group had a hilarious morning at the Funky Aardvark in Chester, making pottery heads with some very strange expressions. The group now meet in Ness Village Hall, which is very convenient and accessible for their monthly meetings. Members joined Riverside WI for a visit to Chatsworth House to see the fantastic fashion exhibition, and the following week friends from Riverside joined us for a wonderful visit to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, a very emotional and uplifting experience for everyone.

We have had some inspirational speakers, including Jackie Mafi speaking about the awful “ cosmetic “ and torturous fashions that women have employed through the ages to make themselves attractive. No wonder they all died young! An interesting visit to the Cancer Research Laboratory in Liverpool to understand the recent advances in science and the collaboration between different charities and nations to eliminate this disease. Visits are planned for to Wong’s the Liverpool jeweller, Giselle at the Empire, a coach trip to the Lion Salt works in Nantwich and a private viewing at M & Co, Heswall. Afternoon tea at the Atheneum Club in Liverpool and an evening meal at the Manor in Greasby, all before we even start on Christmas. We meet at St Michael’s Church on the first Tuesday of each month, and a new programme will start in the new year ,visitors are welcome.

Pupils’ Viking adventures The Year 2, 3 and 4 children in Bishop Wilson CE Primary School, Burton, had an exciting day at Weaverhall Museum recently where they stepped into the world of the Vikings. They discovered the fearsome weapons used and how to form a shield wall and listened to tales of Viking adventures and invasions. They even discovered the remains of a Viking Warrior’s grave.

Two days in the forest The children at Bishop Wilson CE Primary School, in Burton, had a fantastic two days taking part in Forest School. The younger children went bug hunting, making bug hotels and animal masks. The children in the Owls class incorporated their Vikings topic by making necklaces, rune stones and dens, baked bread on a campfire and foraged for apples and pears to make a drink. The Eagles class made Egyptian reed boats and pyramids.

Neston take-away owner fined in food hygiene prosecution The owner of a take-away business in Neston has been ordered to pay a fine and costs totalling £5,567.50 for food hygiene offences. Mr Keung Lau (63), of Littleton Close, Prenton, Wirral pleaded guilty to 10 offences, under food safety and hygiene legislation committed at The Oriental Flavour, High Street, Neston. West Cheshire Magistrates’ Court heard that, despite several visits from environmental health officers, the Neston premises remained in a filthy condition with risk of contamination, kitchen equipment in poor condition, cooked rice stored at room temperature for six and half hours after it had been cooked and food on sale beyond its expiry date. Mr Lau was fined £3,000 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £2,447.50 along with a victim surcharge of £120, making a

total payable of £5,567.50. In court Mr Lau’s solicitors explained that the offences occurred due to personal circumstances, namely, the impact of the death of his wife from cancer, and having to visit his son who was ill in China, after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Mr Lau cooperated during the investigation and made improvements. The premises have since been given a food hygiene rating of three – generally satisfactory. Cllr Karen Shore said: ““We’re pleased the court recognised the seriousness of these food hygiene breaches. We do understand that people go through difficult times, but hygiene and health must come first. “To protect the safety of residents and visitors to the borough, we want to work with business owners wherever possible and only use prosecution as a last resort.”

Neston Civic Society The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Thursday 16th November at the United Reformed Church Hall, Moorside Lane Neston. Our AGM is the opportunity for members to nominate new members to the committee, and to receive reports of our activities. It will be followed at 8pm by a talk by David Casement: The Laxey Wheel, alias the Lady Isabella. The Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 near Laxey, in the Isle of Man, only 100 miles from Neston. It was designed by Robert Casement, and is over 72 feet in diameter. It was called the Lady Isabella after the wife of the Governor of the Isle of Man. Visitors and new members are welcome. Ensuring that your Will is properly carried through Jackie Campion talks explains how to go about appointing an executor for a Will When someone has made a Will and appointed executors in their will, the executors will be responsible for carrying out the deceased’s wishes. When someone is named as the executor of a Will, they are being asked to take responsibility for administering the estate of the person who made the Will, called the testator, upon the testator’s death. The term ‘estate’ simply refers to all the assets a person leaves behind.

Who to choose When choosing an executor it is important to look at the practicalities of what you are trying to achieve under the Will. Honesty and conscientiousness are important, but if you are appointing more than one executor - and often that’s a good idea – executors also need to be team players. They need to be able to make decisions about financial and other matters, in the interest of the beneficiaries as a whole and not just themselves. They also need to have the time and the inclination to deal with paperwork, the extent of which should not be underestimated. Most people think in terms of appointing their beneficiaries as executors - often their wife, husband, civil partner and children - and let them sort it out.

But what happens if they do not get on? You could ask a neutral member of the family, or a friend, to be an executor. When the time comes, is it fair to ask someone who does not benefit under the will, and cannot charge for their time, to deal with it?

Professional executors It may be worth exploring the option of appointing professional executors A careful choice of professional executors can save time, hassle and tax. There are different types of professional executors: solicitors, accountants and banks. Solicitors alone are governed by rules that limit their fees to what is fair and reasonable, Solicitors also have full professional indemnity insurance. Probably the main benefit of professional executors is their independence, allowing them to make often difficult decision in the best interests of the beneficiaries, without having any vested interests themselves. At Campion Solicitors we will give you clear advice when making a Will and details of a fixed fee. Call Jackie Campion.

Life on the ocean wave Recently three members of the Royal Navy visited Neston Primary School to talk about their careers. The navy men shared some tales about the different kitchens on board the ships, catering for up to 1,700 people at a time and the group of 10-11-year olds spent a morning enjoying fun and games with the physical training instructors, who taught them about the importance of healthy eating and keeping fit The visit from the members of the Royal Navy was part of the school’s STEM Polar Explorer Programme.

Bathroom

Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.

The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering. Owner Dave Sergison commented, ‘Customers will literally be able to

get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’

And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets? A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Oh, and by the way customers receive a freshly made cup of their favourite coffee, latte, cappuccino or espresso when they visit the showroom! Wirral Wetrooms really do appreciate being part of their community and like to participate in helping with Friends of Irby Library. Their latest venture, I was informed, is a sponsored charity parachute jump, which seven of the team will be undertaking to raise money for the Catterbridge Cancer Charity. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

FLAMING NOVEMBER COLOUR With the flowers coming to an end for the year, it is time to appreciate the leaves changing colour to yellow, orange and red and berries on shrubs. In sheltered areas where Acers can thrive in cool damp soil, their leaf colour can be stunning in autumn. I have an Acer palmatum Orange Dream, in a pot. In spring the foliage is lime green but in autumn the leaves are edged with orange red than gradually deepen over the days. If you have space for a large tree in the garden and want autumn colour then try a Liquidamber. Some are huge trees but Liquidamber orientalis will grow slowly to 6m tall with yellow and orange foliage in autumn. Plant well away from buildings, at least the ultimate height away, to prevent tree root damage to structures. Last month I suggested a striking grass, Miscanthus sinensis Flamingo for autumn colour. As the weather cools, this grass takes on orange reddish hues as can be seen from the photo. Berries do well at keeping colour going on into winter and this year is superb. Look around as you walk to the shops and you are likely to see gleaming Pyracantha shrubs loaded with berries

in red, orange and yellow. Another desirable plant is Callicarpa or Beauty Berry. The variety Profusion is best for berries which are clusters of purple dotted up the stems. Needs a moisture retentive soil in sun or light shade and berries best after a hot summer. This year Berberis are berrying well with clusters of scarlet berries which make a stunning contrast on the purple leaved varieties. As leaves fall, and if you have space for a leaf compost heap, clear them up and put them in their own heap or damp into plastic bin liners, preferably with grass cuttings to help them rot down. Leaves and grass make the most delicious compost (from the plants point of view!) which is usually weed free. Dig out any vegetables that have finished for the season and add a layer, 3ins deep, of well rotted manure onto the top of the bed to be taken down into the soil over winter. Make sure you have cleared all leaves from around roses and cut off any that show signs of disease. These spore based moulds stay in the soil ready to emerge in the next season so keeping the area clear is important. Finally, plant tulip bulbs, your last chance for a display next year!

Every Opportunity Endless Possibilities

LETTER FROM WESTMINSTER by Ellesmere Port and Neston MP Justin Madders

Time for action on Vauxhall future The news that 400 jobs are to go at Vauxhalls is a massive blow for the individuals concerned but also for the local economy, particularly in the run up to Christmas. Following the announcement I was granted an Urgent Question in Parliament on the news. Urgent Questions are matters that are not already on the agenda for the days business in Parliament but are urgent and important in nature. In order to be granted an urgent question an application has to be made to the Speaker’s Office, who then requires a representative of the relevant Government department to attend in order to answer the question. On this occasion, the Minister tasked with responding on behalf of the Government did not convey a sense of grip of the situation or tangible solutions to the challenges ahead. If we accept at face value that the reason for the announcement is the falling sales of the Astra then that is not a reflection of the dedicated local workforce and does not give us many clues about PSA’s ultimate intentions for the plant. However, while it was encouraging to hear the PSA Group affirm its commitment to the Astra plant at Ellesmere Port and its confidence in the capability and skills of the Ellesmere Port workforce to deliver the required improvements

in performance, there was a clear indication that plant efficiency and certainty over our future trading relationship are pre-requisites for further investment decisions. It is therefore clear that we need the Government to commit to a much greater level of support in terms of reducing plant costs and expanding the local supply chain. At the moment only about 25% of the parts for the Astra are sourced locally; huge savings can be achieved by increasing that figure. These are things that need to be worked on now and I know that locally the Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership are making steps in that direction but we need political and financial commitment from central Government to achieve these aims as well as certainty about our future trading relationship as soon as possible. It is time for action from them and I am going to be spending the next few weeks and months putting as much pressure on them as possible to support the plant. After all, they managed to come up with proposals that convinced Nissan to commit to UK manufacturing, we should expect the same level of support for Vauxhall. In the meantime I hope that the Company will work closely with the Union to minimise the number of compulsory redundancies and ensure there is support for those who have to leave.

Hayley’s health and fitness

Are you making your child fat? DID you know that 1 in 3 children aged between 6-9 years are obese? Did you know that food/ eating habits in young children are what can contribute to them being overweight as an adult. There are several factors in today’s society that contribute to a childhood obesity, simply things such as; Larger portioned foods, snacks between meals, sugary drinks, lack of activity, skipping breakfast, bad habits observed by parents the list goes on. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO BREAK THIS CYCLE? You may think what’s a few treats they are children that’s what kids do, eat sweets, ice cream etc. However you could be contributing to their risks of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, reduced mobility, low self-esteem and depression plus many more negative consequences. The fact is when a child is young they only know what they are taught and see on a daily basis, if they think having full fat coke for breakfast and take-aways of an evening is the norm, they are more likely to continue this when they get older. If you’re guilty of this it’s not too late to change habits and you being a good role model is the first place to start. If your child is a fussy eater, try a variety of foods and offer lots of praise and encouragement for trying something they wouldn’t usually have. Sit down with them at meal times and show them that you eat the new foods too and tell them how good for you they are. Children need to try foods on more than one occasion, they might not like it the first time but keep trying, try adding different sauces, or mix it in with something they do like. Be sure to make a big fuss if they do finish or even try a new food. It’s important they stay active, how many children do you see as soon as they get home from school are straight on the computer/ social media. Limit these times and get the whole family out and about. These may sound

like simple tasks but they can make a huge difference. A child should be physically active 60 mins of the day! It’s important also not to use food as a reward, “oh well done honey you did your homework, here’s a cream cake!” use sticker charts, praise and days out to reinforce good behaviour. You often hear lots of mums saying “Give him this it will keep her quiet!” yes you might get two minutes peace while they finish off a bag of sweets. But you will have more grief when your child needs teeth removing due to tooth decay! Keep snacks to savoury treats, cheese, crackers, veggie sticks for example. Keep in mind of the effects in later life, cut of sugary snacks, encourage good eating habits and show them good life skills by being a good role model. It’s never too late to make changes!
