You’re never to old to tread the boards A theatre group which has specialised in helping young actors is now also doing its bit for those people with a few more miles on the clock. Little Actors Theatre is working in partnership with Brightlife Cheshire to deliver a bespoke theatre company for the over 50s. The group calls itself Brightlights Theatre Company and meets every Friday 11am-1pm at Neston Theatre Arts, 26-30 Brook Street. The company has already devised a new comedy play called ‘The Cruise’ which is to be entered in the 2019 Leverhulme Drama Festival. Working with professional actor Mike Lockley the group is now ready to embark on rehearsing and staging the play. New actors would be welcome and could be accommodated, however, the group really needs people interested in the backstage side of things. Costumes, props, direction, stage management, lighting and sound all need someone at the helm. New members would be most welcome to get involved. There is no charge for the sessions but we do request Antique Clock Care a donation for refreshments. Council approves Burto After many years of uncertainty and concern over the future of Burton Manor, Burton Residents can now look forward to witnessing its restoration and development. This follows the decision by Cheshire West and Chester Planning Committee to approve the plans proposed by Peter Betts of Burton Manor Restoration Company to restore the Grade II Listed Manor and gardens, along with an enabling development of 16 new family houses in the grounds. Following the closure of the training facility at Burton Manor in 2007, the owners Liverpool City Council took the decision

to put it to the market for sale in 2014. There followed two abortive attempts to purchase and develop, including the most recent as a wedding venue. During this period the maintenance of the Manor was neglected resulting in extensive dry rot and deterioration to the building. The approved development will see the Manor restored and converted to office accommodation to be occupied by the Russel Taylor Group. The future of the listed Walled Gardens and Atelier units are assured by their transfer to the Friends of Burton Manor Gardens. In addition, the village

will once again have the use of a village shop and cafĂŠ. The listed Mawson gardens and Ancient Monument of the Ice House will continue to be accessible by the public and 16 family houses will be constructed for sale within the grounds. The development will be undertaken by Peter Betts of The Burton Manor Restoration Company with the support of the leading conservation architects Donald Insall Associates and Ryder Landscape Consultants. Speaking after the decision by Cheshire West, Mr Betts said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are delighted that our plans

More trees at Drake Road The second phase of tree planting has been completed along Drake Road. Neston Town Council, in collaboration with the Mersey Forest, provided funding for 16 trees on the verges of Drake Road, Neston. The first phase in 2016 gave residents the choice of four different species (birch, mountain ash, hornbeam or non-fruiting pear) to be planted on the road verge outside their house. The local appreciation of the initiative then led to a second phase of four further trees in 2018.

We sell our homes for large sums of money, which makes it highly attractive for scammers to sell your home from right under your nose, they will transfer your property into their own name using false documents and often take out a mortgage against your property. Your property is more at risk if there is no mortgage, it is rented out or empty, in addition properties that are not mortgaged or registered with Land Registry are seen as more high risk. There are a number of ways you can protect your property: • Is it registered? • Are your contact details up to date at Land Registry. • Get Land Registry property alert service, this will not automatically block any changes to the Register but it will alert you if something is happening. • Get a restriction put against your title, this will stop Land Registry registering a sale or mortgage on your property unless a conveyancer certifies the application was made by you. • Choose your conveyancer carefully, make sure the firm acting for you is genuine by checking with the Law Society or Council of Licenced Conveyancers.

Crimes reported to Neston police include: l Briardale Road, Willaston – A group of passing youths snapped the wing mirror off a Saab 900 which had been parked at the roadside. l Neston Road, Willaston – A Kia Sedona was reversed into McColls convenience store in the middle of the night and two men used an angle grinder to access the cash machine. They left in a dark coloured vehicle which had been parked nearby. l A male has been arrested following a series of vandalism attacks in Neston, where a ‘For Sale’ sign was used to smash a window in a communal door and a Suzuki Swift was damaged in Frobisher Road, fencing and various cars were damaged in Raby Park Road. It is alleged that the male walked through the area brandishing a plank of wood. l Old Vicarage Road, Willaston – Hedge cutter and charger, left on front of the property were taken. l Badger Bait – A Ford Transit van was stolen. l Hooton Road – Four chainsaws, two hedge cutters and chainsaw pads were stolen from an Iveco Tipper van, parked at Tomlinson Garage. l Puddington Lane – A saw and tins of pain were stolen from a property under renovation.

If it’s more than one a month that’s too many! l Don’t be fooled by ‘no added sugar’, this doesn’t mean there is No sugar in them! There are still natural sugars and carbohydrates, remember to check labels.

l Exercise as well as diet, you might be less on the scales but if you still struggling to get up and down the stairs and can’t run for a bus without getting out of breath, it’s time to get your fitness up. Remember exercise as well as diet promotes all the internal benefits plus increasing muscle mass, which helps take pressure off your joints. l Be careful running, as soon as people diet they also hit to the pavements to shed the weight. Remember if you’re not used to running, build this up gradually, buy decent trainers to avoid impact, this isn’t always the quickest form of exercise to get results you want. Interval training has been proven to be more effective. l Drink lemon water, there are so many benefits to doing this daily, remember to drink more when exercising. l Cut out white bread. Opt for granary! l Remember you’re a role model to your child’s eating habits in later life. Autumn tints in October

ith one of the driest summer of recent years this has not been great for gardeners. If you do want to plant anything out, firstly dig a hole at least 50% deeper and wider than the pot. Incorporate a lot of well rotted manure into the soil. This will act as a sponge to retain moisture. Make sure the plant has been standing in water for at least 2 hours to soak the compost. When planting put half a watering can of water in the base of the hole then backfill gradually, adding lots more water as I go. Firm the soil down and add another can of water on the top to settle the soil. Plants that do well in October include Cyclamen hederifolium. These autumn flowering cyclamen are hardy and like a light soil and a sunny dry spot around shrubs. They also do well in pots where the white marbled green foliage looks stunning all winter. Another

bulb that does well in pots is the Nerine with itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exotic pink flowers late in autumn. Again, they need well drained soil and a light dry soil by a wall would be ideal provided that they are not shaded by larger plants. Crab apples or Malus are in full fruit now with many keeping their tiny apples all winter. You get blossom in spring and coloured fruit in autumn on small trees. The variety Golden Hornet has bright yellow apples, Harry Baker has pink flowers and large red fruit which are good for Crab Apple jelly. John Downie has white flowers and two toned red/orange fruits also good for jelly. All are self fertile so they do not need another variety to pollinate the flowers, unlike some apples. Crab Apples are a good pollinator for apple trees so having one in the garden on a dwarfing rootstock (M9 or M26 for a small tree) is ideal.

This year my Star Jasmine or Trachelospermum jasminoides, has had flowers in summer and the glossy evergreen leaves have already started to turn red. Last winter it stayed red all winter, brightening up the garden. My Acers in pots have also turned to tints of orange, red and yellow. October is the time to finish harvesting tomatoes. Bring green ones indoors to ripen in the heat. Squashes and pumpkins should be ready to store too before any frost arrives. This year my runner beans will have finished early but sometimes they last into October. Pick them and cut the plants down to a stump. Leave them in the soil and they may well re-sprout next spring as mine did this year. Re seed any bare patches of grass after scarifying the soil, adding some compost, then sowing the seed and water in well.
