NESTON WHAT was Neston like during the First World War? On the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great War, Neston Library is holding an exhibition about the town’s involvement in the conflict.

Accolades for road safety officers Neston pupils have received special accolades for promoting road, community and personal safety messages in their schools and communities. Annabel Beddoes and Ewan Parnell from Neston Primary School received Highly Commended awards. Annabel and Ewan were awarded certificates and prizes in recognition of their Highly Commended status by the Council’s Road Safety Officer Lue Ellis. They were selected from 270 pupils who have carried out the role of JSO in the borough’s schools over the past year. Road Safety Officer Lue Ellis, Junior Safety Officers Annabel Beddoes and Ewan Parnell, Headteacher Rob Golding, Road Safety Officer Sarah Collins.

Neston Riverside WI Neston Riverside is an active WI group with trips, dining experiences and a variety of specialist groups meeting regularly; including book, craft and walking groups. It recently celebrated its 4th Birthday with a meal at Neston Cricket Club on the 16th July. 44 of the members made it to the meal and there was a friendly atmosphere, fine food and fun entertainment. The highlight of the evening was a performance by the WI’s own choir; The Riverside Rhapsody Singers who gave their own twist to songs from The Sound of Music; with “How do you solve a problem like Andrea” being especially appreciated-Andrea being our current President. Many thanks to Jennifer Ricketts and Pauline Hignett who organised the entertainment. The food by Cheekychillie Events was delicious, the view was great and the company couldn’t have been better. Altogether a great celebration.

Applying for a Lasting Power of Attorney A LAsting Power of Attorney (LPA) gives another individual the legal authority to look after specific aspects of your financial affairs or health and welfare should you lose the capacity to do so. itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not just for the elderly; younger people may become incapacitated through accident or illness. If you do not have an LPA in place and later become mentally incapacitated, relatives may face long delays and expense in applying to the Court of Protection. LPAs are designed to be recognised by financial institutions, care homes and local authorities, as well as tax, benefits and pension authorities. They are legal documents . You may consider having one alongside your Will. There are two types of LPA: one that can cover decisions about money matters, known as a property and financial affairs LPA, and one that can cover decisions about healthcare, known as a personal welfare LPA. A key

difference is that a property and financial affairs LPA can be used while someone still has capacity, whereas a personal welfare LPA can only be used once they no longer have capacity. A person administering a property and financial affairs LPA can make decision on things such as buying and selling your property, dealing with your bills, running your bank accounts and investing your money. If they have a personal welfare LPA, they can generally make decisions about where you should live, how you should be treated medically. County awards for Callum and Natalie Two Neston Air Cadets received the Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit from David Briggs, Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire at an awards ceremony at Chester Town Hall. Cadet Warrant Officers Callum Reid and Natalie Fields, along with family and guests, were honoured at the annual presentation of the Lord-Lieutenant’s Awards for Cheshire. During the ceremony, Mr Briggs appointed 19-year-old Callum as Deputy Lieutenant’s Cadet. Callum will provide ceremonial support to the Lieutenancy over the coming year. Callum joined Neston Air Cadets five years ago. His crowning achievement was in 2013 when he graduated from the challenging Headquarters Air Cadets Junior Leaders’ Course and was awarded the coveted Burgundy Lanyard. Mr Briggs also presented his Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit to Natalie, who has proved an excellent role model for cadets both on her squadron and across Merseyside Wing. Last year, Natalie was awarded the Dacre Brooch by Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, Commandant Air Cadets, for being selected as the best female cadet in the Air Training Corps, from over 10,000 female cadets in the organisation. Colourful time for store staff

Sainsbury’s Neston have been very busy recently raising funds for charity. In July the store sponsored a table for the BiG Colour Run for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd and had great fun throwing orange powder at the runners as they passed by. We won the prize for the best colour station. Then they took part in the Race for Life at Birkenhead Park and have raised £180 so far for Cancer Research. Store manager Laura Smith along with her daughter Lucy; Team Leader Jayne Boddy and her daughter Libby: PR Ambassador Louise Irvine and her Springer Spaniel Max all completed the 5k walk in just over 1 hour. Customer services manager Penny Povey and colleague Alex Rigby completed the gruelling Deva Divas triathlon in just over two hours and have so far raised £488 to be split between Mind and Dementia UK. The store’s local charity partner for the last 12 months– the Wirral Fund for Children with Special Needs will be presented with a cheque for £1,970 soon. The new local charity partner is the Joseph Windsor Heart Trust, which helps to raise funds to put defibrillators in Neston’s schools, recreation centres and public places. Sainsbury’s will be holding “a Cuppa with a Copper” sessions in the café on Friday 5th September from 1-2.30pm and then every three weeks after that. These sessions will give people the chance to meet up with the local Police Community Support Officer and pick up some tips on home safety etc. plus give you chance to discuss things that concern you.

Burton’s ‘doorway to another world’! Visitors to Burton Manor Gardens will no doubt have been intrigued by the arrival of ‘The Bath House Folly’. Newly installed in the Walled Garden following its appearance at the recent Royal Horticultural Society Show at Tatton Park, it is currently on loan to Burton Manor Gardens. Made primarily of re-used wood, the Bath House Folly was created by artist Kate Maddison. Parkgate pupils show their supp Parkgate Primary School pupils have been working very hard to raise money for the annual national ‘Send My Friends to School’ campaign. This year the focus of the campaign has been to raise awareness of the plight of disabled children in developing countries who are not able to attend school. Pupils decorated figures and added their messages. These were displayed in the playground as a reminder. Parkgate Rotakids also organised many fun events which were supported by all the children in the school. They began with a ‘Name the Teddy Bear’ competition followed by a ‘Run to London and Back’ where the whole school worked together to cover the distance from school to No. 10 Downing Street and back

The children want the Prime Minister to honour his election pledge to ensure that all children across the world have the opportunity for an education. The children presented Mr Miller with a signed school photograph to give to Mr Cameron. The total amount raised to send a disabled child to school in a developing country was an amazing ÂŁ533!

Neston pupils commemorate the Great War Pupils at Neston Primary School have been commemorating the start of World War One. Members of the school gardening club created a small memorial garden which includes a blossom tree and the years 1914 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2014 cut from the ground. Poppies were also planted in the raised beds on the school yard. Year 6 pupils created an impressive and enigmatic display in the entrance hall to remember the men and women involved in the war.

Small firms bullish about the future More than 60 per cent of small firms are optimistic about their business prospects, according to a leading Neston accountant. Phillip Bates, principal with Phillip Bates & Co, said that although trading conditions remained “tough”, the majority of his clients were starting to see an increase in sales and opportunities. The Park Fields ‘Cow Field’ has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Community award for the third year running, one of just 178 sites in the country. The Field, which was nominated by the Friends of Park Fields, was judged against a strict criteria and included an “on site” visit by the Green Flag judges. Chris Try, Secretary of the Friends said: “We are really pleased that the field and the hard work that the community has

contributed has been recognised by the judges as outstanding.’’ The field, which was granted QE2 Playing Fields Status in 2012, is now in its’ second year of a project to create a wild flower meadow Over 50 local people, young and not so young, turned out in May to sow a special mix of wild flower seeds and in total over 4.5 hectares were sown, including an area dedicated to poppies in remembrance of

further enhance this area over the coming years. The speaker is Lt Commander Tony Cioma MBE RNR and his talk is entitled “Life with the Sea Cadets”. Non members are welcome, entrance £1.50p, paid at the door. Thursday 4th September What did Neston do in the Great War? An exhibition about Neston and its surrounding villages during the Great War, 1914 to 1918, will be opening in Neston Library, Parkgate Road. The exhibition will be opened at 7pm by Neston’s Mayor, Councillor Janet Griffiths, and there will be refreshments, while the local Air Cadets’ Band will with music popular at that time. Members of the Burton and Neston History Society have been researching the history of this period and have found lots of fascinating information which will be on show; there will also be folders with details of Nestonians who served in the war. Organisers are hoping to include pictures and information about all whose names are on the War Memorial in Neston Churchyard, as well as others who served. If you have a relative who lived in Neston at this time and have any information about them please contact Neston Library - phone 337-4690, or come along to the Exhibition which is open for three months.
