Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

THE University’s move into the old Capital Bank building has caused rumblings of discontent, with one campaigner claiming it will lead to the ‘studentification’ of Handbridge. You can read more in this month’s magazine. On a sad note, in this month’s Butcher’s Blog Bruce Edge pays tribute to his father John Edge who died recently. We also have news from Queen’s Park High School, Chester Croquet Club’s forthcoming season, Handbridge WI’s appearance on national television, Hough Green history, Dodleston Castle, as well as the usual features, including the crime update with PCSO Jenna Smith and health and beauty.

Somerville’s: Let’s hear what our customers have to say.… “After initially putting our house on the market with another estate agent, we quickly discovered that we were not receiving the service levels that we were promised and subsequently lost confidence in the agent. We switched to Somerville’s and could not believe the difference. Annie, Richard and their team made you feel like you are their only client. We are truly grateful to all of the team at Somerville’s for all their hard work and for looking after us so well.”
“A big thank you for all the effort you have put into selling our house. It is greatly appreciated. We had great confidence in Richard when he sold our house in 2008 and your conduct over this sale has reinforced this feeling. It has been a pleasure dealing with you both.” Mr & Mrs P. Westminster Park
“Thank you so much for your help. Your style and manner and personal attention to clients has been well received and refreshing in this day and age.” Sue R. Waverton
David & Sarah O’Donnell, Hoole
“Thank you so much for your wisdom, patience, guidance and expertise. You have been a great support.” Ms J.Y. Hoole
“Thank you so much for everything you’ve done in ensuring the sale of my house has gone so smoothly! Both you and Richard have not only been great fitting people in for viewings but helpful offering guidance through the process – something that cannot be underestimated. I’ll be in touch over the next few days with the keys but just wanted to thank you for being great with the sale!” Charlie M. Chester
“What a great partnership Richard & Annie are. I am so pleased I was recommended Somerville’s who in my opinion have proved they can show the big chains what professionalism and customer service is all about. Annie took the stress out of house selling for me by keeping in contact each week. I will never have any hesitation in recommending Somerville’s and I am eagerly awaiting getting a signed copy of Annie’s book!” Mr Sandiford, Curzon Park

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge
John Edge 1940 -2015 It is with great sadness that this month’s blog will be in memory of my father John Edge who passed away on the 18th February after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on the 20th October 1940 during the Second World War and lived in very cramped accommodation above the shop in our current location. My Grandfather Ernie, founder of our family business then left to go to War leaving my Grandmother, Florrie, to run the business with no previous experience of butchery whilst looking after a newborn baby. My father lay in a drawer at the side of the shop till while she served the customers.
In 1955 aged 15, Dad joined the family business. He was to put 50 years of his life into the shop, working hard and modernising as he went. Over his lifetime in the shop he and my Grandfather saw the emergence of the supermarkets and the domestic freezer. The freezer revolutionised how people shopped like the supermarket did but the supermarkets were to prove a huge threat to small independent shops all over the country. At one stage there used to be 12 butchers shops between our shop and The Cross in town. Now we are the only one.
My father’s way to compete with the supermarkets was to provide better quality, provenance and better service. This was the way we remained in business over some very difficult trading years. He put all of himself into the shop on a daily basis. He had a great sense of humour and always had a laugh and a joke with customers. In addition, he had a very caring side which saw customers confide in him with their ups and downs in their own lives.
His funeral on the 10th March was attended by nearly 400 people which showed how fondly he was thought of by his friends, family, customers and the whole local community. I had the pleasure of working alongside him for 12 years before he retired which will always live with me. He will be hugely missed and I am told will be held in great affection for many years to come by the people of Handbridge and Chester.

Take a look at Hough Green’s history
Hough Green has a long history not only as the main route from Chester to North Wales and Ireland but also as an area of industry. Only in the last 150 years has it been transformed from Chester’s major brick-making site to a prestigious residential area. The first inkling for a book setting down this history came when one of the authors gave a presentation to the Hough Green Residents’ Association in 1999. One or two of the other authors who were present suggested
that a book might be possible but nothing happened because of other commitments. However, the idea never went away and a couple of years ago, with changing circumstances, the idea was reborn. This time, it took root and grew to achieve what we have today. The authors of the book are: Ray Carpenter Pam Corkerton Carol Farrell Mike Lloyd With much financial and other support from the Hough Green Residents’ Association, ‘From Bricks to Villas’ will be published on 13th March 2015. It details the story of Hough Green over the last 600 years noting both the mighty and the mundane. It takes 144 pages of quality paper with a wealth of images to enhance that tale. As far as we know, there are no other history books covering this location so the book fills a gap in the literature. The book, priced at £14.95, will be available from the Hough Green Local History Group by mailing local.history@raycar. plus.com or by calling: Carol on 674955 Mike on 680328 Pam on 680277 Ray on 671684

on the beat with Police Community Support Officer Jenna Smith It’s been a busy time for the officers in the Overleigh area as we have started Operation Shield. You may have noticed new signs and posters in your area; here is some more information about the new operation. What is Operation Shield? Operation Shield is Cheshire Constabulary’s unique DNA marking system that is protecting homes and businesses in Cheshire by reducing burglary opportunities, deterring offenders, and identifying and recovering stolen property. How does it work? Operation Shield works by using state-of-the-art unique DNA liquid which contains an individual code to mark property in your home, garage and shed. The DNA coding in the liquid is registered solely to your address and added to a database, meaning that if anything is ever stolen it can be traced back to you. The liquid is barely visible and is hard for offenders to see. Once it’s applied to property it is extremely difficult to remove, meaning that if an offender is ever caught in possession of stolen items they can be linked directly back to the crime scene. Once property has been marked and registered, stickers can be displayed around your property to work as a deterrent to any burglars who may be looking to target your home. What can Operation Shield protect? Operation Shield can protect a whole range of items within your home, garage and shed. Items listed below are just some examples of what can be marked with the liquid; Laptops, TVs, Games consoles, Mobile phones, Cameras, Tablets, Hi-fi systems, Jewellery boxes, Bikes, Tools, Gardening equipment, Sports equipment
What happens to burglars who are brought into police custody? Operation Shield now means that anyone who has been arrested and brought into custody is scanned for traces of unique DNA liquid – not just offenders who have been arrested for burglary. As well as scanning offenders, police also process any recovered property for DNA code. I am a business owner, what does Operation Shield mean for me? As well as protecting homes across Cheshire, Operation Shield is also dedicated to protecting businesses and the property within them. The system works the same way as it does for private premises, with business owners able to mark goods, equipment and cash tills with the unique DNA liquid. Businesses can also use an intruder spray system which releases a spray of the liquid onto offenders who force entry into a premise. The liquid then marks the offender’s clothes, hair and skin, and is extremely difficult to remove. In fact, the liquid can stay on skin and hair for up to six weeks. They might not see it – but we will. How can I get protected by Operation Shield? Operation Shield has launched in burglary hotspot areas across Cheshire and local officers have been working closely with communities in these areas to help them protect themselves. Operation Shield uses service provider SelectaDNA for the unique DNA products. Other service providers are available. If you would like to find out more about Operation Shield and crime prevention advice, contact your local neighbourhood officers by using the details found on the Cheshire Police website. If you would like to purchase SelectaDNA kits, visit the SelectaDNA website www.selectadna.co.uk

Handbridge WI featur Did you catch the local Women’s Institute on BBC’s Countryfile programme last month? The ladies were featured in the show to talk about the issue of processed food. Handbridge member Sybil Graham is involved with the National Federation of Women’s Institute (NFWI) so she and some fellow members were invited to take part in a discussion about Country of Origin Labelling [COOL]. This was in the news because the extension of legislation to processed food was being debated in by the European Parliament that week. Countryfile presenter Tom Heap, filmed in Sybil’s kitchen in Queen’s Park, with Sybil Graham, Christine Robinson, Pauline Cotton, Veronica Bull and NFWI member Marylyn Haines Evans.

armer Spring days lift our spirits and put a spring in our step. The days are longer and the daylight is brighter, so why is our skin looking tired and grey and in need of pepping up. Our skin needs brightening and energising. At the end of winter we are relying on many vegetables and fruit that have been stored or have travelled many miles and as a result have lost a great deal of their vitamin content. Even dairy products are affected as the cows are eating stored food. We feel fatigued and our skin reflects this - we call it “Spring Tiredness”. Dull skin needs two important boosts: gentle exfoliation to remove dead cells and energising ingredients to brighten and give back its natural bloom. Face treatments containing antioxidants provide us with brilliant energising effects and because antioxidants also act as anti-inflammatories these creams and treatments are suitable even if your skin has been left sensitive by the colder weather. Products containing high levels of Vitamin C are excellent for brightening the skin. At Hough
Green Clinic our Vitage(R) Vitamin C Radiance Serum is an instant fix for dull tired skin as it contains encapsulated Vitamin C to energise and Argantensyl to firm and tighten. Vitamin C Radiance Mask balances and energises. It contains stabilised Vitamin C, kaolin and almond. It refines pores, deeply hydrates and restores radiance. For best results it should left to work its magic overnight. Revaleskin(R) containing CoffeeBerry(R) the powerful botanical is packed with polyphenol antioxidants and has clinically proven results for skin brightening as well as hyperpigmentation, redness and irritation reduction.
The Illuminesse Brightening Complex is a must have fix for tired dull skin. Replenishing Eye Therapy is ideal for dark circles and tired eyes as well as lifting and firming.

Uni article lacked depth Your article in the March edition about the sale of the Lloyds Bank site to the University of Chester is, as was the CWAC Planning Committee debate leading to the decision you report, woefully inadequate. CHESTER CROQUET CLUB
Why not play croquet this summer? Why not try a new outdoor leisure activity this summer? Croquet is an interesting and enjoyable game which can be played on equal terms by men and women of all ages and abilities. Perhaps you have played garden croquet with family or friends and would like to learn more about the game. Perhaps you have hung up your boots or trainers after playing a more strenuous sport and would like to switch to a game that involves challenge and skill but does not require the strength and stamina of more energetic activities. Perhaps you haven’t found a sport to interest you. Perhaps the children have left home and you find you have more time. Perhaps you have just retired or moved to the area and would like to try something new. Or perhaps you would just like to escape from the phone or computer or kitchen or daily round of work and enjoy a stimulating game in the fresh air? Why not try your hand at croquet? Chester Croquet Club meets in Westminster Park off Hough Green in Chester. It is a friendly and successful club with about a hundred members and is always pleased to welcome new members of all standards from absolute beginners to more experienced players. There will be two ‘Introduction to Croquet’ sessions for which there is no charge. Part One will be held on Sunday 12th April and repeated on Sunday 19th April, and Part 32 To advertise call 350398
Two will be held on Saturday 18th April and repeated on Sunday 26th April. Choose which Part 1 date and which Part 2 date you prefer. All sessions will run from 2- 4pm. If participants then wish to join the Club, beginners’ courses in association croquet and golf croquet will follow at the end of April. Coaching is also available for people who have played before and would like to improve their skills. No previous knowledge of the game is needed and all equipment will be provided by the Club. The only requirement is that players must wear flat-soled shoes. l If you would like to enrol or would like more information, please contact the Club Secretary, John Dawson, at 01244 675929 / johngdawson@onetel.com or the Membership Secretary Sally Slater on 01244 677645 / springboard_sally@ hotmail.com

The four were inspired by the Thursday coaching sessions at the school, run by Gary Kelsall. In addition, they all now attend training with Deva Handball and County training sessions. Cheshire girls and boys teams were successful in winning this tournament, fighting off tough competition from Greater Manchester and Greater Merseyside squads. The quartet from QPHS will now represent the Cheshire County at the National Championships to be held in Somerset on 18th April.

Did you know that Dodleston once had a castle?
T
ucked away behind trees in the private grounds of the Old Rectory in Dodleston are earthworks that at first glance seem insignificant. They can be seen from the churchyard side of the boundary wall at the rear of St Mary’s Church. These earthworks are the site of Dodleston Castle, a Motte and Bailey construction that was built in c.1090 by Hugh Lupus as part of a line of defences that stretched from Shotwick to Treuman’s Hill (near Hawarden), Dodleston, Pulford, Alford and Shocklach. The purpose of these ‘minor castles’ was to control the Welsh tribes and to prevent the theft of livestock.
A motte and bailey castle was made up of two structures, a motte, a type of mound - often artificial - topped with a wooden or stone structure known as a keep; and at least one bailey, a fortified enclosure built next to the motte. The term “motte and bailey” is a relatively modern one, and is not medieval in origin. The word “motte” is the French version of the Latin mota, and in France the word motte was initially an early word for a turf; it then became used to refer to a turf bank, and by the 12th century was used to refer to the castle design itself. The word “bailey” comes from the Norman-French baille, or basse-cour, referring to a low yard.
BRONZE AGE
Mottes were made out of earth and flattened on top, and it can be very hard to determine whether a mound is artificial or natural without excavation. Some were also built over older artificial structures, such as Bronze Age barrows. A motte was protected by a ditch or moat around it, which would typically have also been a source of the earth and soil for constructing the mound itself.
The Bronze Age connection is interesting, particularly as a Bronze Age flat axe head c.2500 BC was 30 To advertise call 350398

Dodleston Castle
found by metal detectors on land on the outskirts of Dodleston about eight years ago.
A keep and a protective wall would usually be built on top of the motte. Some walls would be large enough to have a wall-walk around them and the outer walls of the motte and the wallwalk could be strengthened by filling in the gap between the wooden walls with earth and stones, allowing it to carry more weight - this was called a garillum.
PULFORD
Smaller mottes could only support simple towers with room for a few soldiers, whilst larger mottes could be equipped with a much grander building. Many wooden keeps were designed with a bretasche, a square building that overhung from the upper floors of the building, enabling better defences and a more sturdy structural design.
Wooden structures on mottes could be protected by skins and hides to prevent them being easily set alight during a siege. The Motte and Bailey of Pulford Castle can be seen close to the church of St Mary the Virgin.
It’s interesting that churches were built close to the sites of castles and the Pulford Motte and Bailey is right by Pulford Brook, the established border between England and Wales.
Whether these castles ever saw military action is not clear but in 1401 King Henry IV called upon the governors of the Marcher Parishes, which included Dodleston, to ensure the castles were maintained to repel the revolts of Owen Glyndwr. Sadly, through the centuries these monuments of history have virtually disappeared off the scene but at least we have mounds of earth left as reminders of their importance in more turbulent times.
