Dog poo detectives are in the pink! Volunteers in Handbridge are helping Cheshire West and Chester Council tackle thoughtless dog owners by organising a special initiative in their area. The Friends of Edgar’s Field Park in Chester have volunteered as part of the Council’s Good Dog Ownership campaign to highlight the problem of dog fouling. The volunteers will use chalkbased pink spray paint to highlight the problem to let them know that someone is watching. The Council’s Streetscene Team will then move in quickly to clean up the mess. This initiative has the added benefit of clearly pinpointing the unwanted deposits to passers-by. Handbridge is one of three hotspot areas selected for the ‘Pink Poo’ initiative. A Pink Poo Toolkit is also available on-line to help other communities to run their own campaigns. Local Handbridge Park Councillor Razia Daniels said: “It’s wonderful that the Friends of Edgar’s Field Park are getting involved and helping us with our campaign. “We really need volunteers in other areas of Handbridge – particularly Appleyards Lane, Prenton Place and Allington Place. It is simply a case of spraying and then logging the problem areas and emailing the information through to the Council. Clearing up is then organised by our Streetscene Teams.” The Friends of Edgar’s Field Park all ready to start their Pink Poo campaign: Steve Rodgers (Chair); local ward member, Councillor Razia Daniels; (kneeling) Paul Blackburn, from the Council’s Regulatory Services Team; and Graham Gordon (Treasurer) and Pamela Stanley from the Friends of Edgars Field Park.

Duke’s Drive community group launched A new community group - Friends of Duke’s Drive - has been formed to help manage the areas of the Drive that fall under the council’s responsibility. Handbridge Park Councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan, along with Localities Officers and Countryside Rangers have helped the group to get started. Councillor Sullivan said: “We are delighted to see a new community group starting up and getting involved in this historic countryside site. “They have our full support and it is so easy to sign up and become a member.” The group have a Facebook page – Friends of Duke’s Drive Woodland, Chester.

Musical gets a modern twist Queen’s Park High School played host to the annual end of year production performed by the talented students of Mill View Primary School. This year, their chosen production was, ‘Olivia!’ - a modern twist on the classical story of Oliver. In a unique collaboration, students from Queen’s Park High School worked as technicians supporting their younger peers to develop their production and enhance the already incredible show with lighting and sound. Matt Yeoman, Director of Learning for the Visual and Performing Arts said: “It is always fantastic when new ideas, new collaborations and new opportunities are created for students and this certainly is the case. “Working alongside the staff and students from Mill View Primary School has been a real privilege and I know our own students from Queen’s Park have gained a lot from the truly vocational opportunity the collaboration had presented.” 20 To advertise call 350398

QUEEN’S PARK HIG

Staff triumph as parents enter the dragons’ den Queen’s Park High School staff team were challenged to a Dragon Boat race by parents. The stage was set at the Queen’s Park High School Boathouse where both teams, each of twenty two participants lined up alongside The River Dee. The parents boasted an impressive squad, complete with seasoned rowers including one ex GB rower. Whilst the teachers demonstrated their superior face painting ability through their Spartan like ‘pink’ war paint. The parents were well in front at the half way point but the staff found their rhythm to steam to victory with a late charge. The teams retired back to school for a wellearned BBQ!

Year 11 say farewell to school in style Year 11 celebrated in style at their very successful prom which was held at the Mollington Banastre Hotel in July. It was a chance for staff and students to come together to celebrate the successes of students over the past five years and to mark the end of this part of their formal education. BBQ time .... at last! At the time of writing this blog it is 28°c and Wimbledon has just finished... So move aside strawberries and cream, let’s get the barbie on! When the rare opportunity for a BBQ arises we all snatch at it with both hands. But what to cook . . . Of course the staples of any BBQ are the sausages, steaks, burgers and kebabs but there are other things to try. Quite a recent phenomena is the butterflied leg of lamb, which is a leg of lamb boned and opened up to resemble a butterfly’s wings. Today though, I would like to draw attention to the Spatchcock Chicken. A Spatchcock Chicken is a chicken that has been prepared ready for cooking by either splitting the bird down its backbone or removing the backbone altogether. Then after flattening it out to give an even depth of meat for even cooking, two skewers may be inserted to hold the bird rigid. This technique will allow for a chicken to cook much faster than a conventional whole chicken and in addition it makes it very easy to apply a marinade prior to cooking. As everyone will be aware it is very important to make sure that a chicken is thoroughly cooked through, so when barbecuing a Spatchcock Chicken I would advise to start it off in the oven and finish it off on the BBQ. Should you have a BBQ with good temperature control then you may choose to cook on it from start to finish . The lidded BBQ’s are probably best for cooking large joints of meat. The recipe I am using today uses lemon, garlic, rosemary, oregano and chilli flakes with white wine but you can use any of your favourite chicken marinades to apply to a plain Spatchcock Chicken.

Spatchcock Chicken with Chilli, Lemon & Herbs Ingredients:

A 2 kilo Spatchcock Chicken Zest & juice from 2 Lemons 3 tbsp Olive Oil 1 Garlic Clove, crushed 3 tbsp fresh Rosemary, chopped 1 tbsp cracked black pepper 1 tbsp Chilli flakes Coarse Sea Salt 1 tbsp dried Oregano Half a cup of white wine

Method:

1. Place the chicken in a heavy roasting dish

2. Rub the chicken with olive oil, pepper, salt, rosemary, garlic, lemon zest, chilli flakes and oregano. 3. Drizzle the lemon juice over the chicken and place in your fridge for at least one hour. 4. Preheat oven to 200°c / Gas Mark 6 5. Cover the chicken in foil and roast at the top of the oven for a total of 30 minutes . After 20 minutes add the wine and baste the chicken regularly with the tray juices until removal from the oven.Keep these juices for further use. 6. Remove Chicken from the oven and transfer to a preheated BBQ for the remaining 15-20minutes of cooking time.

7.Baste the chicken with the cooking juices from your roasting tray as needed, to keep it moist.. After carefully checking that your chicken is fully cooked through let it rest for 15 minutes, cut into pieces and serve. Drive your neighbours mad with the amazing smells!! Note: For those with a temperature thermometer the core temperature of your chicken should be 75°c/165°f or even slightly above when removed from the BBQ.

Top Tip: Try sliced bacon on your BBQ. It really brings out all the flavours of your food
