Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &

Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Golf course to go into private hands Westminster Park Golf Course is set to be taken out of council control and run instead by a private provider. Cheshire West and Chester Council believes that switching Westminster Park to the private sector will lead to improved facilities while keeping the ‘Pay and Play’ policy for golfers who do not want to pay club fees. Council chiefs heard that the three West Cheshire courses, currently operated by Brio Leisure, are subsidised to the extent of £246,000 annually. Cllr Stuart Parker, Executive Member for Culture and Economy, told members: “Many private sector courses are providing ‘Pay and Play’ rates that compete with Municipal courses. “Consequently, the council and Brio have jointly agreed to look at the market to provide golf course operation, secure capital investment to improve the courses and reduce current subsidy.”

This unique workout combines the elements of Pilates, yoga, resistance training and ballet into a highly effective regime performed on the mat and at a ballet barre. The technique utilises the body’s own resistance in conjunction with weights, bands and small balls. The effect is a long, lean dancer’s body without being a dancer! The low impact, total body workout lifts the butt, tones the thighs, flattens the abs and sculpts the arms, whilst protecting the joints. Small isometric contractions are performed and integrated with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness.

on the beat with Police Community Support Officer Jenna Smith Burglaries in Handbridge and Westminster Park There have been a number of house burglaries in Handbridge and Westminster Park. Patrols are currently working in the affected neighborhood, working hard to catch those responsible. Report any suspicious behaviour on 101. Here is some simple crime prevention advice:Secure your home Here’s a list of some of the things you can do to improve the security around your home: • Fit mortise locks (Kitemarked BS3621) to all front and back doors and locks to all downstairs windows or windows which are easy to reach. • Keep your house and car keys safe and away from doors and windows. • Fit a burglar alarm, but make sure it is installed properly and works. • Keep your garage and garden shed locked with proper security locks, and keep any tools secure and out of sight. • Trim back any plants or hedges that a burglar could hide behind; and • Make sure you have up-to-date home insurance. When you’re away • Don’t leave your curtains closed during the daytime. • Use timer switches to turn on some lights when it gets dark. • Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries when you go away. • Ask a neighbour/family member to look after your home. Report any suspicious behaviour on 101.

Theft from Sheds and garages There has been a rise in theft from sheds and garages in Overleigh. The locks have been cut and items stolen. Patrols are currently reviewing CCTV in the area and visiting affected residents. Phone 101 to report any suspicious behaviour. Here is some simple crime prevention advice:•Please make sure all sheds and garages are locked and secured using a good quality hasp and staple with a closed shackle padlock and make sure that the doors are solid enough not to be kicked in. • Use sensor lighting in the garden and driveways to deter trespassers and phone 101 to report any suspicious behaviour. Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house. • Lock ladders inside your garage or shed to stop a thief using them to reach upstairs windows. If there is no room in your garage or shed, chain or padlock ladders horizontally to a sturdy bracket on an outside wall. Consider having lockable steel boxes fitted to the floor to store your tools in, or anchor posts fitted to the floor to secure larger tools and equipment

Car Crime Now that there are frosty mornings remember not to leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running. If you are defrosting your vehicle stay with it. Even if it is on the drive way do not leave it running unattended!

ANTI-AGEING: THE NATURAL WAY

Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic

H

ow do you define a Natural Skincare Product?

There is at present no international standard for Natural and organic products. There are several different bodies such as The Soil Association in the UK. In the United States their intention to regulate standards is that the product must contain over 95% natural ingredients and should not contain any ingredients suspected to have potential harmful effects on health.

Following my editorial on pigmentation last month we are delighted to introduce Revaléskin . This skin care product really combats and targets pigmentation problems caused by the sun head on. (R)

Revaléskin Anti-Ageing Skincare is 98.4% to 99.2% natural and contains no ingredients that are potentially harmful to health. One of the key ingredients in this skincare range is CoffeeBerry which is no stranger to us at Hough Green Clinic as we have stocked the CoffeeBerry Skincare range for many years. (R)

Gardening by Janet Heath

Midwinter Cheer

The end of year is the best time to appreciate the evergreen plants, mainly shrubs and trees. Holly or Ilex is the classic Christmas shrub with dark glossy green leaves and red berries. Frost on the leaves gives them a magical Christmas touch. Hollies prefer a moist, well drained soil so heavy waterlogged clay is not recommended. There are many other evergreen shrubs with cream, yellow and green foliage which always cheer up a garden in winter. Ground cover Euonymus Emerald n Gold and the variety Emerald Gaiety will cover the soil under larger shrubs. Another green and yellow shrub is Elaeagnus x ebbingei Limelight that will grow in sun or shade and

brighten up darker areas in winter. Conifers come into their own in winter and I love the smaller trees with silvery blue foliage. The blue spruce Picea pungens Hoopsii has silvery, ice blue needles and would be suitable for moist but well drained acidic soil. Another conifer with similar coloured foliage is Abies concolor Compacta which is a smaller slow growing tree with silver grey needles. These two smaller trees would look great with Rhododendrons and underplanted with Euonymus to give year round colour. My favourite sight in winter is to see Dogwoods or Cornus with red or yellow coloured bark planted against silver birch with the winter sun giving a glowing colour. Cornus alba Elegantissima is

one of the best with rich red stems in winter and green with cream edged leaves in spring and summer. It is a vigorous grower and will thrive on well drained or heavier soils in sun. Cut the stems down to 30 cms every two or three years to promote new growth and bright red bark. Jobs to do in December are limited. Keep off lawns when frosted as you may cause damage to the grass by treading on it leaving a trail of footprint sized dead grass! Prune shrubs to shape. If you have ordered bare rooted, trees, shrubs or roses plant them out when the weather is dry and the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. If they arrive when conditions are not right for planting, plant them up in pots or heel them in where the soil is well drained.

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge

Top Tips for a Top Turkey First things first how many people are you catering for and how big does your turkey need to be? Size – Allow 1Ib/454g per adult when deciding how big a whole turkey to buy. Cook your turkey from room temperature.

Removal from your fridge an hour before cooking will achieve this. Be sure to remove any giblets from the cavity of the bird before placing in the oven. Prior to cooking it is good to bear in mind two important rules. 1. Never overcook your turkey;

2. Never undercook your turkey. I know that this states the obvious but a successful roast turkey dinner depends on this. No pressure then!

Turkey is very lean meat and therefore can go very dry when overcooked. It really is essential to get your cooking times organised so that you know approximately when you need to be removing the turkey from the oven. Make sure that your bird is accurately weighed

occurs around the time its due to be cooked. At this point, the bird needs to be removed from the oven to rest for approximately 25mins. This will help to redistribute the juices prior to carving. prior to cooking and if you stuff the bird please make sure to allow extra cooking time. The British turkey information service says that if the turkey is over 4kg/9Ib calculate 20mins per kg plus 90mins. Therefore a 10Ib/4.540kg turkey should take 3 hours at 180 C o

Under 4kg/9Ib is 20mins per kg plus 70mins. A meat thermometer is a great tool to ensure a perfect turkey every time. You need to aim for a core temperature of 75 C. o

Pop up turkey timers are great as they provide reassurance that the bird is properly cooked. The timer is pushed into the deepest part of the breast meat and will pop up at exactly 75 C which is the correct temperature to be reached. You will need to keep checking to see when this o

If you do not have either the thermometer or timer, then push a fork into the deepest part of the leg. If the juices run clear, then the turkey is cooked. If not, give another 10mins and then try again. To add more moisture to the breast, butter can be rubbed into the breast meat under the skin and then all over the legs. Season the bird and then cover the breast with tin foil while leaving the legs to open roast. The legs are not as tender as the breast meat and therefore need more exposure to the heat so that the legs and breast are cooked at the same time. Otherwise the breast can become overcooked whilst the legs need additional cooking time (the legs can always be foiled later if necessary). Note: The turkey is the main course; prepare all of the other foods around the turkey, not the other way around. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR

Ballet, bagpipes, bullying and B Performing Arts came to life at The Catholic High School Soirée, featuring over 100 performers and nearly 30 different acts. The variety and the quality of the performances were fantastic with Emma Peruzza playing the bagpipes, two GCSE Drama groups performing short plays, a superb dying swan from Swan Lake as well as musical theatre, bands and the school show choir Centre Stage. The evening began with excerpts from Grease performed by Sixth Form drama and music students, before hosts Frankie Serra and Hannah Salisbury (Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl) took over and welcomed a full hall of proud parents, families and school staff. Year 11 singers Sarah Hulmston and Lilli Griffiths performed excellent solos, followed by Sixth Form pianist Louise Beltrami, sisters Arianne and Andrea Perez performed The Neighbourhood’s

‘Sweater Weather’ before the Year 10 GCSE Drama group teamed up with lead vocalist Frankie Boswell to bring Emilie Sande’s ‘Read All About It’ to life. After superb individual performances by Year 8 students Ellie Jones (tap) and Emma Peruzza (bagpipes), it was the turn of Year 11 drama students performing a short summing up of ‘Blood ‘Brothers’. A Sixth Form band performed ‘Second Chance’ before further solo slots featuring Year 11 singers Hannah Chesworth and Ailis Duggan, and a debut for Year 7 clarinettist Jennifer Astbury. Street dancer Jordan Massey, from Year 13, had the whole audience holding its breath with his freestyle interpretation, complete with several standing flips and handstands before show choir Centre Stage performed the first of their numbers – ‘For Good’ from the musical Wicked. Bollywood came to Chester with sisters Milin and Livin Dinu, along with best friend Emily Brayne, performing Indian Dance to ‘Come and Get It’, before Molly Davidson sang and

The ingenious use of the school hall to provide several performance spaces meant there was no break in continuity as Year 9 students dealt firmly with ‘Bullying’ in their devised drama piece. Flautists Molly Johnson and Grace Braham led into musical theatre numbers from Shrek and Les Miserables featuring Shannon Brown, Alice Birthwright, Maisie McMahon and Aaron Bladen. Tap dancer Mazy Roberts was followed by another Sixth Form band and Mac Alexander’s sax solo. The finale came with performances by Isabelle Mohan, Ellie Jones, Steph Reay and Louise Beltrami. Karen McCarthy, Head of Performing Arts at the school said: ‘This was a genuinely brilliant night tonight. I’m massively proud of the students and my amazing department’. Many of the students involved are now due to take part in the Cork Jazz Festival which has included performance from the school Swing Band for the last eight years.” Opposite page (from top): l Year 9 students Abbey Bevan, Ella Lloyd, Lauren Postles and Mazy Roberts about to sort out the bullies. l Lilli Griffith singing ‘As long as he needs me’ from Oliver! l Centre Stage performing ‘For Good’ from the Lion King

Still love the beautiful game but can’t keep up the pace? Walking Football is the new sport that everyone seems to be talking about and is rapidly gaining momentum. Age UK Cheshire, along with Cheshire West and Chester Council, the Cheshire FA and Brio Leisure, have joined together in a bid to increase activity levels, predominantly among the over 50’s, by encouraging people to take up the sport of Walking Football. Recent studies have shown that as well as all the health benefits, exercise - even slower-paced exercise such as Walking Football - may also improve memory and slow down mental decline, aid sleep as well as improve strength and balance to help reduce the risk of falls. Proving increasingly popular in various parts of the country, walking football is a slow-paced version of the game aimed at those who are looking to ease themselves back in after injuries, those who have never played the game before and older people who simply want to enjoy football without the vigorous workout. The rules are the same as normal 5 a side football with the obvious difference being that there is no sprinting, running, jogging or slide tackling. There is less stress on the body but the game is still competitive.

Adam Doyle, Adult Football Development Officer, Cheshire County FA, said: “Not only does walking football provide a fantastic alternative to keeping fit it is also a great way to meet new people through the social elements the game brings” Kick around Louise Gough, Senior Health and Wellbeing Officer at Age UK Cheshire added: “Walking Football is such a great concept. There aren’t that many activities that engage older men let alone provide so many health and social benefits. Although our players are predominantly older men, we welcome women too. So if you want to keep fit, learn new skills, have fun and meet new people at the same time, come along and have a kick around!.” Age UK Cheshire is currently offering Walking Football sessions at the Northgate Arena, Chester on a Wednesday from 11am-12pm . Come along and try a FREE taster session! So what’s next? Maybe Walking Rugby? For more information on Walking Football or to see what other activities Age UK Cheshire has to offer, please contact our Get Going Together Team on 0151 348 5493/4 or visit our website at www. ageukcheshire.org.uk

T

he shop windows are festooned with decorations and bright, twinkling coloured lights adorn almost every possible surface. Christmas carols and popular seasonal songs like ‘’White Christmas’’ and ‘’Let it snow’’ seem to emanate from virtually every shop door way, as if to encourage you to cross the threshold, absorb the Christmas Spirit and survey the multitude of products on offer. Many shop fronts have snowflakes stencilled on their windows and decorated Christmas trees, both real and plastic are prominent features, as are realistic dummies dressed as Father Christmas with motorised arms ringing hand bells and taped voices calling ‘’HO HO HO’’. The sales staff in the stores are wearing brightly coloured clothes with tinsel wrapped

around their necks and Father Christmas type hats on their heads. The shoppers are out in profusion, wrapped in winter coats, anoraks and boots to protect them from the drop in temperature significant with the time of year. Multi-storey buildings are competitively clad externally in lights wishing everybody a ‘’Happy X’mas’’ with incredibly extravagant, and expensive, lighting systems whose purpose seems to be to outdo the immediate neighbour.

BRIGHT STAR

I was sitting in Starbucks, having a coffee before a meeting and watching the scene as it unfolds when a double deck bus passes rapidly by and I notice that the whole of one side of the bus is a massive poster. The scene shows Mary and Jesus in the manger complemented by the attendant animals and bright star. The top of the poster is headed for the full length of the bus, in very large letters

www.overleighroundabout.co.uk

The true spirit of Christmas This month contrasts the Christmas celebrations in Hong Kong with those back home. ‘’The True Spirit of Christmas’’. The bus moved too quickly for me to see who had actually sponsored the poster. The scene I describe is not in the United Kingdom, nor even a European city but Hong Kong in December not too long ago. The sun is shining brightly and the temperature is a glorious 23 deg C during the day but the locals are feeling the chill compared to the heat and humidity of summer! According to the official figures Hong Kong has a multicultural population of more nearly 7.5 million with Chinese, Muslims, Jews, Hindus and about 500,000 Christians included in the total. Since the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, it is said that many Christians have left Hong Kong but the true spirit of commercial Christmas continues to increase. Soon after Christmas, the theme will change from one form of celebration to another when the Chinese population celebrate their New Year, which in 2015 is the Year of the Sheep (Goat) and scheduled for sometime in

February. It all depends on the phase of the Moon. The lights and decorations will remain in place but the message will change to Gong Xi Fat Choi in Cantonese or a Happy New Year. Somehow, the true spirit of Christmas seems meaningless in such a culture, but as I know from my Christian friends in Hong Kong, Christmas is celebrated in a traditional manner by them despite the overt commercialism and pressure to spend money on something the Chinese know very little about. In this country, we are also subjected to the extreme financial pressures that the Christmas period brings. Returning to Chester from Hong Kong on a cold winters evening and seeing the decorations, lights and trees in homes in the city and surroundings, makes you realise that when we celebrate Christmas we do so with a greater feeling for the true spirit of Christmas and the meaning of the greatest story ever told.
