Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

potted: A Klimt in Curzon park, a Renoir in Upton and a Constable in Hoole! Somerville’s estate Agents are bringing well known works of art to the street with their arty ‘For Sale’ boards. The unique boards feature paintings from well-known artists and sellers are able to choose the masterpiece they want displayed outside their home. Richard Wheeler, one of the directors of Somerville’s said “We’re really pleased with how our ‘For Sale’ boards look. They’re a welcome and eye catching change from the normal run-of-the-mill boards that are out there.” He added “We like to stand out from the crowd and we want our properties to stand out too. We’ve had a lot of compliments about our art boards. People love them!” Mr Pugh from Handbridge said “We chose Van Gogh’s Irises for our board. It’s one of my favourite paintings. It’s such a clever idea to put these works of art on the ‘For Sale’ boards. It certainly makes a change from some of the ugly boards you see and brings some added interest to the street!”

School gets the go-ahead for all-weather hockey pitch Staff and students at The Catholic High School are celebrating after receiving formal planning permission to build a full size, floodlit, all weather hockey pitch. Following engagement with the local community and neighbours the application was submitted on the school’s behalf by Nottsport with the support of England Hockey, Cheshire West and Chester Council and several local sports clubs. Headteacher John Murray said: “This facility will be as much for the local community as well as the school and will act as a hub for Hockey and other sports. We have gained valuable approval and encouragement throughout this process including active support from local Councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan.” Hayley Waites, head of PE, added: “This will give the school a fantastic facility and

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge
CHICKEN - GET YOUR FINGERS DIRTY! In the 1950s a chicken used to be a real luxury meat but has steadily evolved into a staple in a short time. This is mainly to do with mass production techniques, producing a full grown bird in a matter of weeks. Sadly these mass produced birds are not kept in the best conditions, are completely lacking in flavour and all too often are pumped full of water, by supermarkets looking to increase their profit margins. Quite recently I was asked by a customer why I sold “dinosaur sized chicken breasts”? Puzzled I asked what she meant. She said that the supermarket ones which she had been buying (before converting to a high street butcher) were about a third of the size of mine. I explained that a 7-8oz / 200g chicken breast came off a chicken weighing 4Ib / 1.8kg which is a mature bird and that the supermarket chicken breasts were cut from 2Ib / 1kg birds which were immature and had hardly drawn breath. The plain truth is that proper quality chicken is available, does still have flavour and lends itself rather well for any number of recipes. It can be affordable and represents good value in the feeding of a family in tough times. For example after cooking a roast chicken don’t be afraid the next day to get your fingers greasy and strip every last bit of meat off the carcass. You’ll be amazed how much chicken you can find on a seemingly stripped frame. This is all usable meat for sandwiches, bubble and squeak or wherever your imagination takes you. This month’s recipe is for Basque-style Chicken with garlic, bacon, tomatoes and peppers.
Serves 4 Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 1 hour Ingredients: 4 large chicken portions 4 tablespoons of olive oil 6oz/170grams streaky bacon, diced 4 onions, sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 green peppers, deseeded and diced ¼ teaspoon dried marjoram 14oz/420grams tomatoes, skinned and chopped, or 14oz can of tomatoes 150-300mls / ¼-½ pint chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper Parsley to garnish
Recipe: 1. Heat the olive oil in a deep frying pan. Add your diced bacon and saute gently, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned. Remove the bacon from the pan with a slotted spoon and keep warm. 2. Add the chicken portions to the pan and cook, turning occasionally, until they are uniformly brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and keep warm. Add the onions and garlic and cook gently until soft and golden. Add the peppers and marjoram, cover and cook gently for 10 minutes. 3. Add the tomatoes and some stock (300ml/½ pint if you are using fresh tomatoes, or 150ml/¼ pint if you are using canned tomatoes in juice). Season to taste with salt and pepper. Return the chicken and bacon to the pan, cover and cook gently for 40-45mins, or until the chicken is cooked and tender. 4. Remove the chicken and transfer to a serving dish. Boil the sauce gently to reduce if necessary, until it is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Adjust the seasoning and pour over the chicken, sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve. Delicious served with rice. Bruce Edge, Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge (www.chesterbutcher.com)

ESSENTIAL MOISTU DURING THE WINT Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic
D
uring the winter months our skin takes quite a battering due to the external extreme cold and the internal central heating. Central heating and heaters in our cars cause severe dehydration. I am sure you have noticed how the skin on your lower legs is really scaly. I know when we undress to shower or bathe the last thing we want to do is delay immersing in the warm water, but it is important at this time of year to exfoliate at least 3 times a week and then moisturise daily after showering or bathing. Making the effort at this time of year will be rewarded when the warmer weather returns.
URISATION TER MONTHS At Hough Green Clinic we recommend a Lactic Acid Peel to massively increase hydration, naturally exfoliate and leave the skin healthy, moisturised and glowing. This is a Winter Treatment MUST HAVE. We also apply a replenishing mask to soothe and deeply moisturise the skin after the Peel. Our PRIORI(R) Lactic Acid Peel is still only £42.00. Investing in a hydrating mask that you can sleep in twice a week is also beneficial.
Exfoliation of the face, neck and chest is recommended 2 to 3 times a week followed by a good moisturiser that contains lactic acid which is excellent for ultra moisturisation.
Remember to increase your water intake to at least 8 glasses of water or other nonalcoholic drinks daily to counteract the dehydration.
Lactic Acid produced naturally in our muscles when we exercise, is excellent in skin care as it will naturally increase your own production of hylauronic acid which is your own natural moisturiser. Lactic Acid also helps the skin to exfoliate naturally.

Spectators became the detectives as Mr Yeoman - aka Inspector Leather - and his cast of dedicated teachers and students performed ‘Who murdered the Popstar?’ – bringing smiles to the audience’s faces as they wove 80s song lyrics throughout the bizarre and intriguing plot. Rest assured; no real tigers were used! The evening raised £800 which will be put to good use enhancing the learning environment for all pupils at QPHS.
Head teacher Lindsey Watterson said: “It is wonderful to have a thriving PTA. I would like to thank everyone involved in putting on such a good evening, parents, staff and students alike. There was a lovely atmosphere and a real sense of community – everybody was made to feel welcome. For me personally, it highlighted the collective commitment and support that exists within and around the school, something which I hope we can continue to build upon in the future.” For more information about the PTA, the activities our fundraising supports, and how you can get involved, visit www.qphs.cheshire.sch.uk
Mixed crews enjoy festive sprint On the last Saturday before Christmas the school rowing club held its Pudding Races. In this event students of different ages and ability were mixed up and teams of five were selected from the student rowers. The coxed quads, rowed in a sprint from the Earl’s Eye down to the QPHS rowing club jetty. Overall the winning team was Ben Newell, Struan Fishburn, Emily Cox, Harrison Kendall and Zara Gautier-Price but the team with by far the highest mark in the quiz was the catering team with Angie Mohan, Diana Collin and Larry Irwin. All the activities were very ably organised by one of the students, Lucy Clegg, and the delicious food was supplied by the parents.
IGH TheSCHOOL Diamond Jubilee Sporty girls fly the flag for QPHS It has been a very busy and rewarding time in girls’ PE. It all started late last year at Catholic High School who were hosting the annual Chester and District Gymnastics competition. Five very nervous Year 9 students had worked really hard practising the vault and a group floor routine. This was the first time any of the students had competed in a gym competition but the adrenaline was flowing and they performed an almost seamless floor routine. The vault was more of a challenge for some, but Ket Somkhane nailed it!!! Performing two very solid tuck jump vaults she secured herself a silver medal. Well done to Abbie MacPherson, Abbi Foden, Berna Karapinar, Ket Somkhane and Hannah Salvi. The winning streak continued when a group of mainly year seven girls took part in a year 8 indoor football tournament at Christleton. Wins against Catholic High and Abbey Gate ensured a place final where they were beaten 5-2 by Bishop Heber The team consisted of Kiera Burke (Yr8), Julia Neill (Yr7), Leah Thompson (Yr7), Izzy Edmonds (Yr7), Lebecca Tariq (Yr7) and Bethany Winder (Yr7)

Retirement opens a new chapter for author Robin SALTNEY man Robin Chambers has realised a lifelong ambition to become a published writer. He has penned an epic fantasy tale called Myrddin’s Heir, which has been divided into several books, the first of which ‘A Wizard of Dreams’ is now on sale. Robin, who is originally from Bootle, near Liverpool, spent his career in the teaching profession, much of it spent in touch Inner London comprehensive schools. During those years he cherished an ambition to write in the same broad genre as J.R.R.Tolkien and C.S.Lewis but the demands of his teaching career were too allencompassing. Robin said: “When I finally retired at the age of 65, my wife and I moved to Belize, and in no time at all found ourselves involved in the running of a small hotel owned by a charming Taiwanese couple who needed help with their English! I still thought I had plenty of time left to write. It was only after I narrowly survived a murder attempt at the age of 69 that I realised how easy it is to die without accomplishing a
cherished ambition. So we returned to the UK at the very end of 2011, and I set to work on Myrddin’s Heir: the epic story I will leave behind.” The first five books are now in the Kindle Store, and you can find out more by visiting www. myrddinsheir.com. A Wizard of Dreams tells of Gordon Bennett, who has special powers. He has an alter ego / guardian angel named Zack who knows a lot. The opening chapters exemplify the way his powers grow. He deals with bullies, he travels in dreams through time and space and goes wherever truth has found a cunning place to hide… Subsequent novels in the series are Amazing Grace, The Quality of Mercy, Gifts from the Gods and When the Cat’s Away Robin added: “They are written for bright children between the ages of 10 and 110. They challenge; there are chapter notes at the back. The story should engage anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter books… “My work as a teacher was fêted by many. I would like before I die to know that my work as a writer was appreciated by more than a handful of people.”

Gardening by Janet Heath
The promise of spring Late winter can often bring a blast of cold weather but it does not stop plants from starting to grow and flower. Bulbs start the year with crocuses and snowdrops out first. Crocuses do best in sun as the flowers will open wide in the sun, then close as the sun leaves them. Crocus tommasinianus has pale mauve flowers with golden stamens in the middle and the birds do not damage the blooms. Birds seem to like the larger flowers especially yellow ones, so I now avoid growing these! A shady site with well drained soil under deciduous trees suits the snowdrops better. They will gradually carpet the ground under trees and shrubs. I would
26
also add Iris reticulata to my early flowering bulbs. These small but exotic blue, white or creamy coloured flowers will enjoy a sunny or lightly shaded spot in any well drained soil. Plant all these bulbs in groups close together for best effect. An early flowering climber is Clematis cirrhosa Wisley Cream. This is an evergreen climber that will do well in a sheltered sunny position and give you white, slightly scented flowers in late winter. Ensure the roots are kept cool with the growth in the sun. Prune to shape after flowering but this variety only needs pruning if it becomes too large and to remove dead stems. Witch hazel or Hamamelis is another early flowering shrub although be warned, the flowers are small so don’t expect a
showy plant. However they do look good in light woodland with tiny spidery yellow, red or orange flowers, often slightly scented. In autumn the leaves turn red or yellow. Underplant with snowdrops and crocuses and plant next to a Cornus alba sibirica with red stems for a colourful display in February. Mulch those perennials whose buds are just below the surface of the soil with a layer of well rotted manure. Paeonies have big fat buds at soil level, rodgersias and heleniums sit just below the surface and all would have new shoots protected from freezing by a cosy layer of mulch. Also mulch fruit trees and shrubs with a layer of manure and complete pruning of apples and pears before buds start to grow.
