Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Flasher in Westminster Park? Police are appealing for information following a suspicious incident in Westminster Park. At about 6.45am on Wednesday 26th November, a 34-year-old woman was walking her dog in the park when she was followed by a man. The man fled the scene when he noticed other dog walkers in the area. He did not touch or attempt to engage the woman in conversation. The man is described as white and between 5’8” and 5’9” tall. He had blond hair and dark clothing. This follows an incident of indecent exposure which took place in Westminster Park at about 7.30pm on Saturday 22nd November. On this occasion, a 52-yearold woman was walking in Westminster Park when a man exposed himself to her. The man is described as white and about 20 years old. He was wearing dark clothing. Police are investigating whether the two incidents might be linked. Insp Brian Green of Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Unit said: “Officers are currently carrying out a number of enquiries in a bid to trace the men and patrols have been stepped up in the area to actively target those responsible and to reassure members of the local community. “We are urging members of the public to be vigilant when walking alone and to report any suspicious activity immediately.” Anyone with any information can call the police on 101.

Lache drugs house closed down by police POLICE have used new powers shut down a notorious ‘crack house’ in Lache. Officers are now able to apply for closure orders at premises where somebody is, or has been, causing distress or nuisance. The closure order for 45 Lache Hall Crescent was approved at West Cheshire Magistrates. The court order means that no-one is allowed into the house for a period of three months, and anyone who does enter is liable to arrest and up to six months′ prison, or a £5,000 fine, or both. Insp Brian Green, from the Chester Outer Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “This closure order was carried out as part of Operation ImpACT and it reinforces the commitment that the police and partner agencies have in targeting those people that undermine our communities and bring misery to residents through their involvement in illegal drugs and anti-social behaviour. “We are committed to protecting the community from drug related crime and antisocial behaviour and this action is intended to send a very clear message that drug dealing in any form will not be tolerated. “Over the next three months regular checks of the premises will be conducted to ensure the closure order is not breached.” Inspector Green added: “We would like to thank local residents who have provided intelligence and information. Quality of life for our community is of paramount importance; our action in this instance has demonstrated our commitment.”

The joy of dance The children at St Mary’s Community Nursery School enjoyed a dance workshop in December. One of their topics this half term has been Sleeping Beauty. They have listened to lots of different versions of the story and the play loft has been turned into Sleeping Beauty’s castle where children have fun dressing up and pretending to be the different characters. Right: Alfie Edwards and Stilian Temelkov can be seen concentrating hard, following the movements which depicts the moment when the bad fairy casts her spell. Above: Lucy Edwards, Amelie Curtis and Allen Paulvin are just waking up after being asleep for a hundred years. It felt so good that afterwards they danced for joy!

This unique workout combines the elements of Pilates, yoga, resistance training and ballet into a highly effective regime performed on the mat and at a ballet barre. The technique utilises the body’s own resistance in conjunction with weights, bands and small balls. The effect is a long, lean dancer’s body without being a dancer! The low impact, total body workout lifts the butt, tones the thighs, flattens the abs and sculpts the arms, whilst protecting the joints. Small isometric contractions are performed and integrated with an interval training approach that burns fat and improves cardiovascular fitness.

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge
Happy New Year! Half the country are presently fighting expanding waistlines and contracting wallets. Its probably true to say that most of us are a bit bored of all the rich Christmassy food and are ready to get back to basics. I have to admit that sometimes a plate of egg and chips does the job nicely but won’t keep the cold
out on a bitterly cold January evening. For such an occasion the “Ham Shank” comes into its own. At approximately £1 per 1Ib it really is a great value meal for all the family. Today’s recipe is “Braised Ham Shank with seasonal root vegetables”. The Ham Shank is cured pork shin, so it has plenty of flavour
Braised Ham Shank with seasonal root vegetables Cooking\time: 3 hours Serves 4 Ingredients: Ham Shank - approximately 2.5 3Ib (1.135-1.365kg) Carrots - 4 medium roughly chopped Celery Sticks - 2 roughly chopped 1 Large Onion roughly chopped 2 Bay Leaves Cooking Tip: Soaked your Ham Shank in a large saucepan of cold water for approximately one hour to remove excess salt.
1. Add your celery, carrot, onion and bay leaves and Ham Shank to a large saucepan. Cover with water by 2 inches. Bring to the boil then reduce to a gentle simmer. 2. Cover and cook until the shank is falling of the bone (approximately 3 hours).
and requires long slow cooking. Very little preparation time is needed but a few hours gently simmering will produce great results. This meal is twice as good a value because a second meal of Pea and Ham Soup can be created in minutes at minimal cost for the following day or can be frozen for another time.
Pea and Ham Soup The next day any leftovers can be turned into a delicious and nutritious soup. If you have used up the stock from your first meal then simply use a vegetable stock cube. Add the stock to a large saucepan and then add 500grams of frozen garden peas and a clove of freshly crushed garlic. Bring this to the boil until the peas are cooked. Then add all your remaining original meal to the saucepan and blend in a food processor. Return to the pan and reheat gently. Serve with plenty of crusty bread and thick butter. Delicious!
3. After 3 hours gently remove the skin from the Shank and strip the meat from the bone with a fork. Serve with new potatoes and steamed cabbage with plenty of black pepper to taste.

’
Having dealt with Richard Wheeler twice before, we knew the sale of our home was in safe hands with Somerville’s. Thanks to their innovative approach they managed ten viewings for us on the first day to market and by the second day we’d accepted one of two offers from reliable buyers and at the required sale price - all of which was instrumental in enabling us to secure our own purchase. Moving home can be quite complicated but this is as smooth as it gets! Andy & Kim E., Chester
QUEEN’S PARK HIG Message from the new headteacher
Lyndsay Watterson
I am absolutely delighted to be taking up the position in January and consider it a real privilege to have been appointed. I have a passionate desire to lead the school to an unprecedented level of success, whilst equally, empowering all individuals to hold true to the school’s mission statement of ‘working together to promote excellence in learning and achievement for all’. Just to give you a little bit of background about myself, I began my teaching career in 1995 in the north east of England as a Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages before moving on to become Head of Languages within the same school. However, having grown up in Cheshire, the lure of the ‘Shire’ became too much and I returned to my roots, spending two years at Cheadle Hulme High School before moving to Tarporley High School & 6th Form College in 2003 where I have held the positions of Head of Languages, Assistant Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. I believe that Queen’s Park High School has many strengths and enormous potential for the future. I have already been overwhelmed by the warm welcome I have received from all staff, governors and students alike and feel excited by the prospect of leading the school into its next ‘chapter’ of development. As Headteacher, I am committed to nurturing, motivating and inspiring all individuals within the school community to recognise their worth, develop their self-belief and strive to achieve their aspirations and goals. My expectations of the students, in terms of their achievement and behaviour, are very high. If our students are to reach their full potential as responsible citizens, there has to be a culture of mutual respect, honesty and understanding; a standard which I have cultivated throughout my career and which I believe is also valued within Queen’s Park High School’s community. The relationships between teachers, students and parents are fundamental to the success of the school and I very much hope that we can work together to ensure the best outcomes for your children over the coming years. I am very much looking forward to meeting you in the near future and becoming an integral part of the school community.

This insight will be of great use to the students who attended as they will be able to use their new understanding when answering questions on conservative ideology in the coming exams. Thanks go especially to students Adam Traynor and Johnny Tarbuck for their efforts.

Busy autumn for rowers
The Dee Autumn Head took place under perfect conditions. Crews rowed 4K from the motorway bridge to Dee Lane opposite the Meadows. Eve Finlay came 3rd in the WJ15 X1 singles. The WJ13X quad with Zara Gaulier-Price, Kiera Burke, Louise Coleman, Bethan Curtis and cox Zoe. They rowed in their first race and looked very accomplished but only rowed the course since they had no opposition. l QPHSRC were able to enter three quads in the Northwich Rowing Club Head Race. The WJ15 X4+ quad with Eve Finlay, Eve Lawlor, Felicity Weir, Zoe Theil and cox Amy Williamson came 3rd out of nine in a very competitive group. The J14 X4+ quad with Henry Dougherty, Charlie Birchall-Jones, Aiden Farelly, Cameron Neill and cox Morgan Whitley rowed like demons to come 3rd out of thirteen crews. Finally the WJ13 X4+quad with Zara Gaulier-Price, Kiera Burke, Bethan Curtis, Charlotte Carswell and cox Morgan Whitely rowed up with great enthusiasm. Volunteers wanted The club is currently looking for adult helpers to help out at coaching sessions. No rowing or motorboat experience is required. Parents can help by providing additional supervision of rowers as they get boats in and out of the water. Volunteers would also accompany the current coaches in safety launches. Whilst this form of volunteering is likely to appeal to parents of existing rowers, other parents who want to find out more about rowing at the school will be very welcome. The current coaching sessions are after school on Tuesdays and Fridays and also on Saturday mornings Call Richard Cain on 07531629300 or email richard.cain1@btinternet.com

Plants to cheer the bleak midwinter The new year is a challenging time if you want flowers in your garden. Here are some ideas of plants that will brighten your day in winter. I love Hellebore orientalis which will really give you large colourful flowers in white, pink and velvet dark purple. They are easy to grow and are better suited to slightly shady spots where the soil does not dry out. I always warn my clients that the sap is poisonous and could cause vomiting if ingested or irritation to the skin. So always wear gloves when touching the plants and wash your hands thoroughly after handling. Alnwick Castle Gardens has these plants in their poison garden for good reason! Iris unguicularis is a winter flowering iris which will open
flowers in milder spells. The thin strappy foliage is not attractive but the flowers are beautiful, as you can see from the photograph. Another favourite of mine is the winter flowering cherry, Prunus sibhirtella Autumnalis. This is a small tree which has flowers on and off all winter in milder temperatures. The branches are covered in pink flowers on leafless stems and look very attractive against a dark fence or hedge. Sarococca or Winter Box is another good plant for winter. It has tiny white flowers giving off a heady scent. It is evergreen, will get to about 1m tall in time and will also tolerate lower light levels. For flowers from December to March plant a winter cherry, a couple of Sarcococca,
underplanted with hellebores, Iris unguicularis, snowdrops, small daffodils and chinodoxa and you will have flowers from December to March, year after year. There is some work to do in your garden in January starting with pruning fruit trees and bushes except plums and cherries. Grape vines should be pruned before mid January. After this time the sap begins to rise and the cuts will bleed. Order your first early seed potatoes and set them on a windowsill in a cool place to chit ready to plant out early varieties in March. Plant bare rooted fruit trees and shrubs if the soil is not frozen. Mulch the plants with manure around the roots to protect from freezing.

Local author Bev uses city landmarks for inspiration
H
andbridge author Bev Cowperthwaite has let her imagination run riot in a new novel about a girl who time travels through the city.
The novel: Mary Draper Dreams of Castle in the Sky sees the cathedral’s gargoyles come to life. The girl’s affectionate cat talks like a toff! Her friend is a suspected jewel thief and the batty Crigglestone sisters are conning their way around a spirit-board so successfully, their dearly departed swindler of a mother would have been proud. But can poor gap-toothed Mary Draper wake herself up? Twelve year old Mary finds herself living an anguished life in a poisonous village, tormented by the goldfish murdering class bully. She gathers she has a sleep disorder causing the unlikely ability to time-travel back to 19th century Chester. Mary is hauled into the lives of her two Victorian friends, Maud Wibble, a giddy girl who can’t pronounce her ‘r’s and Tom Cash, a distressed Liverpudlian boy who use to have a sense of humour. Tom is wrongly accused of the theft of a jewel from the Castle’s Agricola tower, owned by the cantankerous Duchess of Meadowsville. Confronting a life-changing experience, Mary dreams up a plot to expose the real crook in order to clear Tom’s name. Bev, who goes by the writing name Evelyn 26 To advertise call 350398
Winters, is intimate with all the book’s locations. Mary Draper Dreams of Castle in the Sky has been described as a Narnia of sorts, with dark aspects by an Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award reviewer. It is an endearing novel of urban England, a whimsical, charming tale of a Chester girl’s struggle through adolescence. This is sympathetic of a school-aged girl and how she sees this fantastical world.
Endorsement The novel, which is available on Kindle and in Paperback on Amazon has received backing from TV Presenter Sian Lloyd who says: “Evelyn Winters’ natural story telling is bursting with a feeling of quirky magic. It’s a stormy journey and a must read come rain or shine.” Stephen Mosley MP of Chester is also endorsed the story saying: “With its rich history and wonderful architecture, Chester is the ideal setting for any
novel. “Evelyn has taken our imagination on a ride through Chester of old in this original and gripping tale. “I wish this book every possible success and hope many more Chester based stories follow in the years to come.” The Handbridge author’s debut short story, ‘The Little Big Clockmaker’ sees a bewitched clockmaker playing havoc with time by removing and replacing the hands of the Eastgate Clock and ‘A Very Giant Tale’ is

focused around the hypocaust in the basement of Spud U Like and the Soldier who stands outside. The fun part is visiting the settings and checking one of the most photographed timepieces in the country, to see if any of the hands are missing and seeing if the soldier’s eyes really move as he still looks for marauding Welsh giants. Once visited, she is encouraging the children to take a SELFIE with the landmarks and uploading them with the reviews on her Amazon pages. Bev said: “I am intimate with all the book’s locations. I have studied Chester and its hidden gems such as the Wishing Steps, the cathedral’s Chester imp and the camera Obscura, kept in Bonewaldesthorne’s Tower on the City Walls.” The short stories are also being converted to audio so they can be synced with Kindle whisper which will be available on Amazon and ITunes very soon.

Queen’s pupils achieved the highest percentage of A* at Alevel and the highest percentage of A*/A at GCSE locally.

New records set for the Shoebox Appeal Students at The Catholic High School, in Handbridge, have set a new high for Operation Christmas Child. All told, 261 shoeboxes full of presents for children in countries around the world have been sent. The presents, identified by age and gender, so some might be for a younger boy, or for an older girl, are all donated by students at the school. The appeal has been co-ordinated by teachers Lynette Sloan and Vicky Ellison, and a group of enthusiastic Year 8 students. Volunteer Jody Pickles said: “It’s been fun wrapping the boxes and collecting the presents, and its great knowing that we are making Christmas special for someone else.” James Pickering added: “Some children wouldn’t get a present this Christmas if it wasn’t for this appeal, so it’s really worthwhile. We do a lot of charity work in school, but this is special because it’s for Christmas.” Mrs Sloan said: “The whole school has been involved in this. Each year group and each tutor group has put something towards the total. The staff have been great too, helping the students sort through the presents and making sure we have the right gifts for the right children.”
