Have your say on plans for new ‘watersports hub’ Views are wanted on the proposed watersports hub on the River Dee. Last month we reported on concerns that the development would involve building on a chunk of Meadows land. The project group includes Cheshire West and Chester Council, Chester Renaissance, British Rowing and British Canoeing. Active Cheshire, the lead organisation for physical activity and sport in Cheshire have been commissioned to impartially gather and understand the requirements of the local community. They want to hear local opinions from a wide range of people including residents, schools, businesses and community groups. HANDBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB The Club meets at 1.45pm on the third Thursday of the month in St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Our summer season began in May when we had a coach outing for members and friends to Attingham Park near Shrewsbury. We had a fantastic day out with glorious weather in which to explore the wonders of the house and gardens -- the walled garden, which provides much of the produce for the cafe and restaurant, is superb. In June we welcomed back Karen Schofield from Preston with her demonstration entitled “The Garden Party”. Karen also judged our members’ competition, “Summer in a Teacup”. July’s meeting is on Thursday 16th, when Arthur McDonald from Northwich will take “Let Joy be Undefined” as his theme. The following day we have our very popular “Strawberry Tea” in aid of charity, hosted by member Pat Wynne in her garden at Mancot. There will be no meeting in August, when we take our summer break. On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th July, 1-5pm, two pretty gardens are open to the public in Mollington, postcode CH1 6NJ. Combined admission £5 children free. s we are fast approaching the summer holiday season now is the time to stock up on sun protection products. Any products that you may have had lurking in the cupboard for more than a year should be thrown out as they will not now have their full protection. Trying to select the correct sun protection for yourself and your family should be a simple affair. We have more information printed on the packaging than ever before such as sPFs and UVA and UVB protection, even star rating! However, very recently came the alarming news from tests carried out by consumer watch dog Which that two of our most popular products failed to give the protection we expect them to give. One product, a household name, in particular is very popular and trusted by families with young children. Where do you go from here? Keep topping up with more sun cream every couple of hours. should someone unfortunately become sunburned applying Aloe Vera as soon as possible will help to alleviate the soreness and help prevent any peeling of the skin. I always take a tube of Aloe Vera on holiday as it is similar to having a First Aid Kit in a tube. This is the 99.9% natural Aloe Vera in a tube and NOT a cream containing Aloe Vera. As I have mentioned it is brilliant for treating sunburn - keep applying it until the redness subsides over a few days. Also use Aloe Vera to treat bites and stings such as wasp stings, mosquito bites, midge bites, jellyfish stings, weaver fish stings (after you have washed the area with clean water), ant bites and nettle stings. High Summer in JulY July is a month when the classic English herbaceous border is seen at its best. The gardens mentioned below have lovely borders and will give you ideas of plants to grow in your own garden. I love the herbaceous borders filled with perennials that pop up year after year. Agapanthus with its large heads of deep blue or white flowers and green strap like leaves it is an architectural plant for a hot sunny border and grows best in well drained soil and moisture at the roots. Another good plant for a sunny site is Lychnis coronaria also known as Bridget–in–herbravery according to the RHS website. If you have a sandy well drained soil in baking sun then this will be an asset to any border. It has grey/silvery soft leaves with magenta pink or white flowers. It does not last long but it will seed happily.
Lavenders are also a lovely small shrub for a sunny border. If you want the classic lavender scent then go for English Lavender Lavendula angustifolia. With many different varieties of English Lavender to choose from (over 250 apparently) there will be one for a pot or a gravelly soil and baking hot sunny border. Compact varieties like Hidcote or Munstead are better for smaller areas. In July cut back flowering shrubs such as Lilac, Weigela, Cistus and Philadelphus, just after they finish flowering, if you want to reduce them in size. Cut off dead flowers from Roses, Penstemons, Delphiniums, Centaurea, Nepeta and Lupins and you may well get a second flush of flowers in late summer – always a bonus! Dead heading annuals in pots will keep them flowering and do remember to keep pots well
watered in dry weather. Sow salad seeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce and lettuce for autumn cropping. l If you would like to visit gardens for ideas and a lovely afternoon tea, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. In Chester, on 4th and 5th July, 150 Barrell Well Hill gardens are open. On a series of terraces going down to the River Dee you can see perennials and shrubs for sun, a stream and bog garden. The Rowans at Threapwood near Malpas is open on 11th and 12th July has an Italianate theme. With formal and natural areas including ponds it is a fascinating garden to visit.

University experts come in to help RS students TWO Chester University lecturers have been helping A-Level Religious Studies students at the school. Dr Wendy Dossett and Prof David Clough, from the university’s theology and religious studies department, came in to deliver revision lessons. They provided a bespoke and comprehensive overview of key AS topics including Natural Law, Psychological approaches to Religion and Animal Rights. There was a real buzz in the room as the students were involved in discussion work at key points throughout the lectures. School ‘goes to Kathmandu’ As thousands of schools damaged in April’s devastating earthquake in Nepal begin to re-open, Queen’s Park High School has set itself the challenge of raising over £2,500 to help the victims rebuild their lives, through a whole school sponsored event. The goal is for students, staff, parents and carers to walk, run, cycle or row the 4,636 miles from Chester to Kathmandu in Nepal. Head teacher Lindsey Watterson said: “The school felt strongly that it wanted to help make a difference, but by doing something that enabled everyone to make a positive contribution. Our Student Council believe passionately in supporting others who are less fortunate than themselves. They believe that by having a clear goal in mind in terms of the mileage to be covered and the money to be raised, we will certainly be successful.” Visitors to the school over the next couple of weeks are likely to be welcomed by a rather red faced and out of breath member of staff or student, cycling away in Reception. Students are currently adding miles during their free time, during PE lessons, a sponsored walk and a teachers v parents dragon boat race. IGH TheSCHOOL Diamond Jubilee Gwilym takes gold
Artists settle for bronze!
Gwilym Harris, from QPHS Rowing Club, struck gold in the Blenheim Palace Regatta. The event, for juniors aged 14 and under, involved a series of sculling races over a 500m course, drawing in many of the top rowing schools in the south of England. Despite being unwell with a virus, he earned a second placed finish in his heat, then won a qualifying race before going on to storm the final beating some very capable scullers and winning the gold medal.
Art students from years 7, 8 and 9 have been working over the past month to produce work for an exhibition at the Grosvenor Museum which is exploring Cheshire’s Bronze Age past. For the exhibition they are working in collaboration with the museum to explore the human history of the Sandstone Ridge up to the Roman invasion of AD 43. Lorna Kernahan came to QPHS and gave a presentation about the proposed exhibition with some original artefacts to view. The artists have engaged in the making of funerary urns, flat axes, palstave axes and socketed axes and the work will be displayed on six panels. The exhibition opens on 4th July and runs until the 25th October.

Anyone for Usugiri beef? Approximately 15 years ago a Japanese lady entered my shop and asked for a product I had never even heard of: Usugiri beef (pronounced “oosagilli”). Usugiri means ‘thin cut’ in Japanese. Having only recently arrived from Japan, the lady had been having great problems sourcing her favourite food in Chester.
We quickly realised that the best way to cut the beef was to chill it down until quite firm and then slice it on a bacon slicer almost as thin as paper. The cut required was ribeye of beef. In Japan, meat that is marbled is very highly prized and ribeye is the most marbled cut in a body of beef. This marbling of fat largely melts on cooking leaving the steak very juicy, succulent and full of flavour. In Japanese cookery, the great delicacy of kobe beef which is beef from the Wagyu breed is extremely marbled. This particular breed has a fat melting point lower than traditional British breeds of beef. Genuine Wagyu beef is not available in the UK but Wagyu “style” is. There is a very fine line being trodden as regards copyright due to the lack of legal recognition of the Kobe beef trademark in some countries. The ribeye once sliced was to be marinated

I like to warm a ciabatta roll through, butter it and fill it with freshly fried onion and good quality horseradish sauce with the usugiri added at the last second. Delicious and possibly the best steak sandwich in the world!
The particular lady mentioned in this blog became a very good and regular customer of ours and approximately 10 years ago she organised a Japanese banquet of usugiri beef and pork for the Global Head of Toyota who was visiting the Toyota car plant on Deeside. He was so impressed with the meat served that we received a telephone call asking if it was possible for him and his entourage of eight to visit our shop and compliment us in person!
