Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Quartet star in county handball triumph
Queen’s Park High School’s Callum Bishop, Eve Finlay, James Harrison and Joe Clegg represented Cheshire Under 16 Handball at the National Handball County Championships. In the boys’ competition Cheshire were pitted against teams from Devon, Nottingham, Middlesex and Buckinghamshire, winning all but one of their games to get to the final. This was to be a nail-biting match with Cheshire prevailing 10-8 to become the National Handball County Champions! The girls’ team, with Eve Finlay, did very well to finish runners-up.

Opposition to school boathouse redevelopment
A petition has been produced by the Queen’s Park Residents Association and The Friends of the Meadows to make people aware of plans being drawn up to develop and build on The Meadows. At a public meeting held at Queen’s Park High School in February it was announced that the council and The Royal Chester Rowing Club were planning to develop the existing Queen’s Park High School boathouse situated on the edge of the Meadows into a much larger facility. At that time it was stated that there were ‘no specific details available’. However, it is now understood that plans are being considered for: • A two storey building with twice the footprint of the existing single storey school boathouse • A car park to service the boat club. The whole of Barn Field has recently been surveyed. • A bar and social function room. • Of most concern, the development is set to extend into the Meadows itself and develop the whole of the first field - Barn Field. The residents’ group are in favour of improving the existing boathouse but there are big concerns about the size of the new centre. The group fears that it is attempt to develop Meadows land by stealth. The proposal is called the “Community Watersports Hub” but a large part of the funding is coming from The Royal Chester Rowing Club, who intend to sell their existing club-house and move into the new ‘Community’ Hub. Other concerns centre around traffic, hours of operation and lighting. The Friends of the Meadows’ online petition
is available at: www.change.org/p/save-themeadows. A Cheshire West and Chester Council spokesman explained that the scheme was very much in its infancy. The spokesman added: “As we have said right from the start the development –including car parking – could include land immediately next to the current boathouse but there are no plans to build on the main part of the Meadows. “Some survey work has also been carried out on site at this stage to provide essential information about the site and this will inform the process as the project develops.”
Friends of the Meadows Friends of the Meadows Botany recording, each evening starts at 7pm, bring a hand lens if you have one, beginners welcome: Tues 9th June meet down by the Ferry Tues 14th July meet at the main Elizabeth Crescent entrance Tues 11th August meet at the Suspension Bridge entrance l Two Bat surveys will be organised in July which are weather dependent, so the dates will be decided nearer the time. FIRM UP
FOR SUMMER Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic
u
u
N
ow that summer is upon us we want to look our best in our holiday wear and in particular our swimwear. Somehow that little overindulgence of comfort eating during the long winter months has collected around the middle, is a little saggy and not as firm as we would like despite eating healthier and less! Help is at hand at Hough Green Clinic with the combination of two treatments in one session. The first treatment is the Genie Slimming Programme which takes 20 minutes. This toning module is similar to doing 360 sit ups! No effort is required by you - you just lie there and let the Genie work its magic. The second part of the treatment which takes 25 minutes is the Venus Freeze which incorporates multi-polar Radio Frequency and Magnetic Pulsed Fields where the skin temperature is taken up to 41 - 43° C. If there is excess fat the heat opens up the fat cells causing them to discharge the contents which is then exited via the blood stream as waste. This treatment is great for reducing fat on the thighs, stomach, hips, buttocks and tops of arms. The treatment is painless, very relaxing and similar to a warm massage.
we have discovered that by using both the treatments in the same session we are achieving amazing results as can be seen by our before and after pictures. The model in the photographs is a client of ours who had her second child about six months ago. She eats healthily, but her tummy and hips were still carrying excess fat and needed toning. Treatments were carried out once a week over a 5 week period. Her waist trimmed down from 75cm to 69cm. The area just below the waist at the top of the hips went from 90cm to 81cm and the area around her hips and bottom reduced from 99cms to 91cm. The treatment is normally £95 per session for the Venus Freeze and £295 for a course of 10 Genie Slimming treatments. However, we are charging just £95 per session for the combined treatments! If you sign up to our Loyalty Card Scheme you will also receive 50% off your 5th session.

available throughout the day. The club was established 30 years ago as part of the youth services for Chester. Two years ago it became independent and is now a registered charity run by the coaches and parents of the young paddlers. Club Chairman Ian McMullen said: “Our aim is to introduce as many people as possible to the popular, growing sport of canoeing and kayaking. “We want to build on our success as a club and get more members to join up. We want to show you how quick, easy and accessible it is to get out there and enjoy the water. Everybody is welcome to come and join in with our friendly club.” So bring all of the family and enjoy a fun time on the water for only a £2 contribution per person. There will be qualified instructors to guide you through your experience and introduce you to canoeing and kayaking in a safe and controlled environment. He added: ““We are happy for all children to try the sport, but for safety reasons all those under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult in a canoe only.” If you can’t manage to visit on the day and are over 8 years old please come and see us any Sunday morning from 9:30am. The cost will be £5 per person for 2 hours of coaching on the river with all safety equipment provided. www. ChesterRiversideCanoeClub. co.uk

How to Prepare your Home for Sale By Richard Wheeler Cert.REA Many people have asked us how to show off their home at its best in this busy market period so we have put together some handy hints and tips on how to prepare your home for sale.
First Impressions
It is vital to create the right first impression and a tidy looking house will attract more viewings, giving you more choices and hopefully a higher price. The first thing a buyer sees is the outside of your home. If looks untidy they will automatically assume that the inside is the same. Take some time to tidy the garden, trim the borders, sweep the drive, add some flower pots or hanging baskets and, if it needs it, even paint the front door.
De-clutter
De-clutter! It’s the phrase most sellers dread, but it doesn’t have to be painful! A large proportion of buyers are moving to gain more ‘space’, so show it off to them, don’t hide it! Make sure smaller or narrower areas such as the hallway, stairs and landing are free from clutter, especially at floor and eye level. A tidy room presents much better than an untidy one so clear away the kids’ toys, put the dog basket in the garage, take down the birthday cards (temporarily) and put the dishes away.
Kitchen
A kitchen is often the engine room of a home where walls and tiles are subject to a greater amount of wear and tear. Before you go ripping it all out, try painting the walls, re-grouting the tiles, deep-cleaning cupboard fronts and surfaces, you may be surprised what an effect this has (and it could save you thousands of pounds!). If you are considering replacing the kitchen before you sell, please talk to us first so that we can help you assess the viability, cost and benefit.
Bathroom
The bathroom is another key area. It should be clean and fresh, with no water marks or lime scale encrusted taps. Replacing a window blind or shower head & hose can have a huge impact. The suite should be well sealed and the tiles clean and grouted. Clear away the toiletries, fold the towels and put the loo seat down!
Decoration
The standard of decoration is always a consideration so walk through your property with a critical eye. Over time paint work becomes marked especially around light switches and on stairs with no wall rail. Check that all lights have working bulbs, the windows are clean both inside and out, there’s no dripping tap or broken fencing and that the curtains are put up properly.
Outside space
Another important factor for many purchasers is the outside space your home has to offer. Patios and decking should be moss free and clean, the lawn well cut and the borders weeded. If you have a garage, try and keep it in order (although we know this is not always easy!) In autumn months you may need to sweep up leaves and cut back summer growth. Always remember you are selling in a competitive environment. Your house must stand out more to your buyer than any other property for sale at the time. If you would like any help or advice concerning your home specifically, please call us on 318777 or e-mail info@somervillesestateagents.co.uk and we will be happy to pop out and see you. QUEEN’S PARK HIG From HSA to PTA Change is afoot with the parents and carers at QPHS! There has been a change in the way that the HSA is known, to reflect the important role which parents are making in supporting the school. Mike Benson, chairman of the PTA, said: “At a recent meeting the Queen’s Park High School Home Schools Association (HSA) decided to change its name to the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). This was done for a variety of reasons but the main one was to ensure continuity and clarity when children move from Primary School to Secondary School. “As with any re-brand a logo needed to be designed and the PTA were impressed with the response from the school. A vote was carried out at a PTA meeting and we were delighted to announce that the winning logo was designed by Megan Pritchard, Maya Murphy and Kristine Tiskus. This logo will be used on all communications from the PTA as well as featuring on the school website. Congratulations to Megan, Maya and Kristine.”
Poignant visit to WW1 graves STUDENTS visited the First World War battlefields in France and Belgium recently. They did research on fallen soldiers from the Cheshire Regiment and visited the Tyne Cot memorial and war cemeteries. Reece Jones and Alistair Hogan, from year 9, are pictured against the background of Lord Kitchener’s famous recruiting poster. Reece researched Chester soldier Evan Jones who died in April 1918 aged just 20, and was able to find his grave at Tyne Cot.

Exploring the capital STUDENTS from Years 11, 12 and 13 spent their time visiting three major London galleries; the Tate Modern, The National Portrait Gallery and the Photographers Gallery to collect ideas for their current exam based research. Meanwhile Miss Kearney’s Geography students explored the regenerated area of Kings Cross collecting vital primary research for their A2 exam in June, and are busy completing the write up.
Students mean business! The Vue Cinema, at The Lowry Outlet in Manchester, was the venue for a series of oneday exam coaching & revision workshops for Year 12 and 13 Business Studies Students. Throughout the day, students focused on and built up techniques that will enable them to meet the assessment objectives for the course; consolidating and revising what has been learnt in the classroom including effective essay planning and writing technique.
A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge
The Ageing Process! On a weekly basis I label beef in my counter display as “28 day aged”. Also on a weekly basis I get asked “What exactly does this mean?” In this article I thought I would address this topic to enlighten those of you who are unfamiliar with this term or its significance.
“Hanging” is the process of dry ageing a carcass. This is a controlled process conducted in a “coldroom” which is a temperature controlled room between 0 C - 4 C with a good flow of air between the carcasses. This is where all my beef is stored. o
o
The reason for hanging beef is to mature and tenderise the beef. Naturally occurring enzymes in the beef begin to break down the muscles and fibres of the meat during ageing making them more tender. While the beef ages a process of evaporation of the naturally occurring water content in the beef takes place. This concentrates the flavour and makes it much more tender. A consequence of this is that the outer surfaces of the meat exposed to the air will become very dark and dried. These are a waste product of the process and will be removed and discarded before sale.
The carcass improves greatly after approximately 11 days hanging but this process can continue up to even a couple of months in a controlled environment. Personally, I think that beef reaches perfection at approximately 28 days. Hanging it for much longer can result in the beef tasting gamey or even going off.
I hang my beef for 28 days to allow the beef to be eaten at its best. To compromise on that is to compromise on the quality that you sell and that does not really do justice to the animal or the consumer. The supermarkets by comparison largely only age a carcass for 2-3days before going on sale. With a supermarket chain who may sell 2,000 cattle a week, to age and refrigerate all of these for a month would require the space of about four football pitches of refrigeration. In addition, factoring in evaporation and the outer surfaces of the meat to be discarded would cost the supermarkets tens of millions of pounds per year. Simply put, they are not prepared to do this. Instead they sell their meat fresh, turn over their money and sell a product worthy of the effort gone into producing it! Say no more. You can find aged meat in supermarkets at vastly inflated prices but it is not dry aged but aged in vacuum packs to avoid any evaporation or blood loss.
When people say that meat in supermarkets is cheap compared to the high street butcher, it is only fair to say that it is not a like for like comparison. Ultimately you get what you pay for. This month’s recipe is rib-eye steaks with lemongrass and ginger.

Chester Croquet Club
Hoops so popular in Westminster Park Chester Croquet Club was astounded at the success of its publicity this year for new members. Over 30 people attended their Introduction to Croquet sessions held at the club during April. These free sessions were in two parts and gave the participants a real feel for the game, introducing them to both golf and association croquet. The first session was held on 12th April in torrential rain and strong winds, and the brave group battled through and still came back for more. The weather was kinder the following week, cold but dry, when 20 people went on to join the beginners’ courses for both types of croquet run by the club coaches. They have been thoroughly enjoyed so far. Chester Croquet Club has also had a reasonably successful start to the season in
the competitions it enters in the North West Federation and nationally. Last season was its most successful yet, so it has a lot to live up to. Teams have been fielded in the advanced B level, handicap, mid-week, short, golf and golf level play leagues. We are also entering the national Mary Rose advanced competition and the Longman handicap competition and we are hoping to field competitors in several of the North West Federation Millennium tournaments and the Croquet Association All England Handicap Tournament. In May the Club hosted the NW Millennium Level Play Golf Tournament and in September the national finals of the All England Handicap Tournament, two more firsts for the Club. Chester Croquet Club is looking forward to a busy and successful season.
Summer delights June is a month when there is so much on flower so here are a few of my favourites to plant in your garden. For those with free draining soil in sun then the fleeting heads of Alliums are worth growing. They come in small and large heads of mainly pink and purple flowers. I suggest your plant in groups amongst low growing perennials such as Nepeta or Catmint, for best effect. For ground cover I would choose the low growing Osteospermums such as Whirligig which is covered in pink flowers over a long period in summer. It can die back in severe winters but if you have a well drained soil in sun and want a plant to cover a large area by its creeping stems then this is one for you. Grow it alongside the silvery leaved, low growing evergreen shrub Convolvulus cneorum with white flowers in summer. However, it is tender and will die off in cold winters in an exposed position so grow it somewhere sheltered. June is a good month for other shrubs so look out for Spirea Golden Princess with its gorgeous orangey leaves and flashy cerise pink flower heads in June. It will grow in most soils provided it is in a sunny
position. If it’s scent you want then Philadelphus Belle Etoile will fill a small garden with a lovely fragrance. It will grow on light or heavy soils and if it becomes too large then cut it back hard after flowering. Clip back Cytisus or Brooms, Aubretia and spring flowering heathers with shears after flowering. Plant out small plants of cabbages, broccoli and leeks to grow on for winter. Make extra plantings of French Beans, and even courgettes to prolong the season. Don’t forget to earth up your potatoes. If you would like to visit gardens, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Go to www.ngs.org. uk for full details of opening. Visit Bowmere Cottage in Tarporley on Sunday 21st June to see roses and clematis growing in this beautiful English country garden with courtyards, pergola and abundant herbaceous borders. Also open on 6th and 7th June is Bank House in Bickerton. This has terraces with borders stocked with shrubs, trees and herbaceous plants plus ponds and a wild garden.

The rise and rise of Handb THE club recently welcomed guest instructor sensei Frank Brennan. This world renowned karateka is a welcome visitor to Handbridge throughout the year, and being such a sought after instructor, both in the Uk and abroad makes his visits a very special experience for those attending his sessions. In 1990 sensei Brennan led the KUGB senior team to world victory in the JKA (Japan Karate Association) World Shotokan Championships. The Japanese team coach commented that the whole Japanese Team were specifically trained to beat him.
New members, from raw beginner to lapsed seniors are always welcome at the main dojo in Queens Park High School. We also have additional venues in Westminster Park Community Centre, W/P Scout Hall and The Catholic High School in Handbridge.
dbridge Karate Club Many of the senior club members attended a special Dan course in Chesterfield. These courses are for Dan (Black Belt) grades only and gradings for 3rd Dan and above may only be taken on these twice yearly courses. Dave Adams, from Handbridge, achieved his 3rd Dan at this course.
For more information contact the club secretary, Dave Craggs, on 07711 009041 or go to the website at www.hskc.org.uk.
At the Brown & Black Belt course held in Hollywell, North Wales it was the turn of Dave Roberts to achieve 2nd Dan, and Sonja Danby achieve her 1st Dan. It marked a fantastic couple of weeks for the club. And with more juniors and seniors grading during the coming months, it looks like another great year at Handbridge Karate Club.
