Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &

Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

THERE is a sad look to the former Capital Bank / Lloyds Bank building in Queen’s Park. The site has been left vacant following the financial crash and weeds grow behind the locked gates. Now, the University of Chester has been given permission to move in, which will at least bring the building back to life, albeit there are concerns about parking in the area. While the university moves in, West Cheshire College has announced that it is moving out. You can read more in this edition. There is also news from Queen’s Park High School, a new church centre in Handbridge, improvements to the courts at Westminster Park as well as the usual features, including the Butcher’s Blog, crime update with PCSO Jenna Smith, health and beauty and gardening.

Councillors serve up food qualifications Councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan have funded Basic Food Hygiene qualifications for volunteers, so that they can continue to provide a weekly lunch for older residents from Handbridge, Westminster Park and the Curzon Park areas. The gathering takes place at the Church Hall of St Mary’s, Handbridge, and Cllrs Daniels and Sullivan funded the qualifications and additional table ware from their Member Budgets. Cllr Daniels said: “Cllr Sullivan and I appreciate how important these local lunches are in providing an opportunity for

older people often living in isolation, to get out and meet other people. “The group is reliant on volunteers to give up their time to arrange the lunches so we were delighted to be able to fund the qualifications necessary for these to continue. “I would also like to thank all the volunteers for all their hard work.” Councillor Neil Sullivan, volunteers Diana M Schofield, Maureen Evans and Gillian Morris with their certificates and Councillor Razia Daniels.

Grosvenor Museum Society The next lecture will be at the Grosvenor Museum on Thursday, 19th March, starting at 7.30pm. The lecture will be about Eighteenth Century Liverpool Porcelain, to be given by Maurice Hillis. There is a charge of £4 for visitors; and £2 for students.

Nursery school says Kung Hey Fat Choy! (That’s Happy New Year in Chinese) The children and staff at St. Mary’s Community Nursery School celebrated Chinese New Year. As part of their celebrations the children learnt about the meanings of the pictures depicted on willow pattern plates and then enjoyed the story being acted out by Steven Sharples’ Treasure Trove Puppet Company. Afterwards, Steven showed the children how the puppets were made and how they worked. To say thank you, the children wished Steven a happy new year in Chinese, Kung Hey Fat Choy!

Introducing: Elizab

Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, f

E

lizabEth ardEn was in many ways a 21st century woman. as far back as the 1920s she was encouraging women to hydrate, avoid the sun and practise yoga daily. She was one of the first to apply scientific innovation and exactness to the beauty industry emphasising the science behind her products. Famous for her Red Door Salons, she had 100 spas and salons by the time of her death in 1966. Elizabeth Arden products have continued to be a success and in recent years Joe Lewis the scientist who introduced us to AHAs in the form of glycolic acid and latterly lactic acid through his skin care ranges md Formulations and PRIORI partnered with Elizabeth Arden in 2005 for Prevage containing the antiageing idebenone. These are now among the best selling products for Elizabeth Arden winning over 160 awards globally.

Scientist Joe Lewis, pioneer of the cosmeceutical revolution, has now combined and partnered his technology with Elizabeth Arden to give us Elizabeth Arden PRO.

Elizabeth Arden PRO is a clinic brand for the professional market only.

Joe Lewis has used a Skin Health and Beauty Pyramid to simplify what is required in your daily skin care regimen. At the base of the pyramid you have your fundamentals to protect and repair the skin. These will include an SPF, Antioxidants and DNA Enzymes. The middle section of the pyramid will transform the skin and will include Retinoids and AHAs to target moisturization, exfoliation and cell turnover. The top of the pyramid optimizes

what you have already achieved with the other two levels and provides Peptides and Growth Factors for stimulation to the skin.

The jewel in the crown of this new skin care range has to be Triple Action Protector. This is the “must have at the base of the pyramid fundamental. It contains SPF50 Broad spectrum physical sunscreen with NO chemicals. It also contains Antioxidants: unlike sunscreen, antioxidants scavenge free radicals before these harmful molecules can cause damage to the skin. Thirdly this cream contains DNA Enzyme Complex which helps to provide protection against free radical damage and helps the skin to naturally repair itself.

This is a ground breaking new antiageing product that after a massive number of clinical trials has been clinically proven to reduce the visible effects of sun damage associated with skin ageing and non-melanoma skin cancer. It has also been endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation of America which recommends daily use. This non greasy moisturizing lightly tinted Triple Action Protector can be used by everyone over the age of 6 months. The Pyramid middle section, to transform the skin, introduces Age Defying Serum. This powerful serum contains AHA Retinoid Conjugate - first ever biologically designed molecule that delivers the benefits of lactic acid (AHA) and retinoid (Vitamin A) in a single molecule. Its time released delivery helps reduce irritation and side effects normally associated with retinoids.

The Elizabeth Arden PRO range offers 3 types of cleansers, a Skin Brightening Serum

QUEEN’S PARK HIG It is rocket science! A quartet of physics students from Year 12 visited the University of Liverpool to participate in the Liverpool Physics Olympics 2014. This competition, run by the Institute of Physics, challenged the sixth form students to a series of challenges that required them to apply their knowledge in order to find practical solutions in a limited timeframe. The students worked hard in competing against groups of students from schools and colleges across the country, and though they ultimately did not win the competition, they did prove themselves particularly skilled at rocket science and nuclear physics. Jennifer makes a big bang! Three scientific sixth formers presented their research to the public at the World Museum in Liverpool in an event was hosted by the Nuffield Foundation, who offered summer research placements for successful Year 12 candidates. Well done to Toby Fishpool and Matthew Artell on their hard work, and congratulations to Jennifer Graham, who will now be moving forward to present her research at the national stage at the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham in March.

Art class set their own homework Year 7 art and design students took a new direction and began to take ownership of their learning. The entire class have been involved in the planning and delivering of a colour project. Students decided to work in groups and set their own homework researching artists that have used colour in the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. From their findings they have decided upon producing their own responses that include designing a poster to work with collage and mixed media for the following lesson. Similar approaches to this kind of learning are also happening with ther year 10 art and design classes.

Burn, baby burn - disco inferno

THERE was an inferno at Queen’s Park High School! Thankfully no student was harmed in the making of the production Disco Inferno which took to the stage in February. Director of learning for the visual and performing arts, Matt Yeoman said: “To build on the incredible sell-out success of our 2014 production, Les Misérables was going to be a real challenge as it was our most successful production ever, providing an exceptional arts experience for so many of our students. However, we are more than confident that our 2015 production of Disco Inferno did just this and amazed the audiences as it showcased not only the singing and acting talents of our students, but also their dance skills too!” The musical is described as a funk-tastic adventure, which charts its way through a plethora of 70s hits such as Boogie Nights, I Will Survive, Hot Stuff and, of course, The Trammps’ Disco Inferno. A young, wannabe pop star called Jack (played by Alex Aram) is desperate to become a rich and famous celebrity – at any cost. In a Faustian twist he finds himself being managed by the devil’s right-hand woman, Lady Marmalade (Anna Brodie) who promises him everything he wants in return for his soul, much to the annoyance of the local idol, Heathcliffe (Liam Thompson). Remembering the Great War Queen’s Park High School is taking part in the centenary commemoration of World War I by taking two students on a four day tour of the French & Belgian battlefield sites. Students will be able to undertake research on people local to their school who fought in the First World War. Providing an enduring legacy, the high quality educational project will strengthen participants’ knowledge of the First World War, and give opportunities to develop related projects in their local communities.

Church centre appeal launched St Mary’s Church leaders are hoping that a £1.5million church centre will come to fruition next year. A development committee, set up by St Mary’s Church Council in 2013, has been working on the concept of a new centre to meet the needs of the church and the local community with the aim of building in 2016. The new centre will consist of a large hall, two community rooms, a medical consultation room for the adjacent surgery and a cafe social area. The proposed plans have been on display in the Church since November. The feedback from this has provided many useful suggestions and these have been much appreciated by the committee. Chester West and Chester Council are very supportive of the development. The latest cost estimate is £1.5 million. Raising this amount will be an enormous challenge, but a funding plan is already in place to raise the money required. During the first quarter of 2015, several major donors and public bodies will be approached. A ‘Pledge Campaign’ has been launched and details of this can be obtained from the contact below. Any money donated can also be Gift Aided. For further details contact Ted Graham 01244 679636 or email tedgraham@talktalk.net

Wrexham Road green belt to be dug up Hundreds of new homes are likely to be built near Wrexham Road after local councillors approved a controversial local plan. Cheshire West and Chester Council has agreed the plan which will allow for development on the green belt despite opposition from local residents. The ‘sensitive and selective’ release of Green Belt land at Wrexham Road will lead to many new family and affordable homes. Cllr Lynda Jones said: “The Local Plan Inspector agrees with the Council’s approach and this limited change can take place without undermining the purposes of the Green Belt. Importantly, the Local Plan confirms the retention of the Green Belt boundary around the rest of the City.”

The Mad and The Bad A Nurse’s Story by George Birks

As to the staff, both nurses and doctors were treating patients with a mixture of prejudice, ill-understood physical interventions such as shock therapy (in all its forms), and sedation.

We all conducted our care within the provisions of the Mental Health Acts of 1959 and 1983, but the older nurses and doctors had been trained postwar. Doctors generally expected, and got, deference from patients. They got it from nurses too, though nurses could be a two-faced lot.

Maybe it was the older nurses’ enduring influence that made psychiatric nurses enforce compliance from their patients. But from the 1960s, protest against the big forbidding madhouses became more frequent and vociferous. By the 1980s, there was a storm of coruscating reports and bitterly convincing accounts of mistreatment. So a new NHS mental health care policy was developed: Care in the Community.

The Mad ad and the B y

The old institutions would close down, and their inhabitants would be parented, so to speak, by the social security system and visits from communitybased psychiatric nurses. This was not only cheaper (it got rid of those old asylums), but it also reflected liberal views of mental disorder as something that, with love and responsibility, could be lessened, while by would have a better the mentally disadvantaged quality of life.

Stor A Nurses

irks George B

Care in the Community got rid of some of the staff too, but many carried their old behavior into new jobs. This book relates my experiences between 1969 and 1989. I would like to think that psychiatric care is better now, but I don’t. I think it’s just different.

Can yOu hELP a ChiLD TO LEarn? Passion for Learning work with over 20 Primary schools in Chester and Ellesmere Port, placing trained community volunteers with children who are in greatest need of support. Our volunteers work with children during the school day, attending twice a week for 1.5-2 hours. From February, we are also running after-school Enrichment Clubs at schools in Lache, Ellesmere Port and Blacon. Volunteers are needed to support once a week at those Clubs from 3.15-4.30pm. We establish strong relationships with the children helping them enjoy books; play games; make crafts and

undertake projects. Working one to one and in small groups, our volunteers offer children a wide range of activities designed to be great fun whilst enriching their learning. Many children have challenges that can impede their learning as well as their social and emotional well-being. This can lead to them not making the expected levels of progress at school. Problems with learning, reading and writing affect the children’s confidence and enthusiasm, impacting on their aspirations and their ability to fulfil their potential. By building children’s confidence through practice in a safe and supportive

environment, their reading and comprehension skills can grow. The children gain problem solving skills, social skills and build their knowledge of the world through experiences which would not otherwise be available to them. The children we work with are those whose entire learning journey can be enhanced by providing the play and experiences that many children can take for granted. A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge

Sausages! I

thought I would lift the mystery of what makes a decent sausage.

Rule No.1 you cannot make a great sausage without putting great ingredients into it. In years gone by the sausage was a way of using up leftovers to avoid waste. This still continues today to some degree depending on where you buy your sausages from! Personally, I think that you can tell the quality of your butcher by the sausages he makes. We take great pride in our sausages, putting only the best quality shoulder and bellies of pork into them. We remove all rind, bone and any excess fat, which is why there is no fat left at the bottom of the grill tray. A sausage needs to be juicy and succulent but not fatty.

Today the “Umble Sausage” is a gourmet product and should contain only quality meat that any consumer would recognise as meat. There are endless lists of ingredients that can be used and there is plenty of scope to be innovative. We enjoy blending complimentary ingredients together when searching for new sausage recipes.

I think the perfect percentage of meat in a sausage is 75-80%, the legal minimum requirement being 65%. If you see someone advertising 90% I would suggest that it is seasoned meat in a skin rather than a sausage. To be juicy and succulent the sausage must contain the right amounts of lean meat and fat, rusk (breadcrumb) and seasoning. If the sausage contains for example, sage, red onion and garlic like one of our sausages then these added ingredients will affect the percentage of meat in the sausage. No doubt everyone will have a style of sausage that they favour.

Last but not least is the sausage skin that the meat is filled into. Today, more and more butchers and all processors are using collagen skins for their sausages. These are in essence edible plastic. They are very convenient in that you can put a 100 yards spool on a sausage filler and fill it out in seconds with no knots or breaks in the skin. This is fine, but the result is that these skins are very chewy. We use only natural sheep or hog skins. The sheep skins are smaller in diameter and are suitable for thin sausages. The hog skins are suitable for thick, chunky sausages. These skins are only approximately 30 yards long and far more time consuming to separate, use and fill out but are a totally superior product. They also add approximately 50pence to a pound of sausages. This is a lot of money but I strongly feel that if you are going to make a gourmet product you cannot skimp on any of the ingredients.

I occasionally get asked whether we make our own sausages in the shop. For the record we always have made our own sausages and we always will. If you buy in a product like this you have no control over how it was prepared, the ingredients used and even the hygiene standards of the person making it. Enough said!

Bruce Edge, Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge (www.chesterbutcher.com)

This month’s recipe is a very straightforward and tasty sausage casserole. Sausage Casserole - Serves 4 Ingredients 4 large potatoes 4 carrots 8 good-quality sausages 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tsp paprika 400g can chopped tomatoes 400ml vegetable stock 1-2 bay leaves Method 1. Turn the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/ gas 4. Peel the potatoes and carefully cut them in half, then into quarters. Peel the carrots and cut each carrot into about 4 or 5 even pieces. 2. Prick the sausages all over with a fork – this helps the fat to run out of the sausages, so that they don’t split open as they cook. Heat the olive oil in a heavybased casserole and fry the sausages, turning often, until lightly golden all over – this should take about 10 minutes. Remove the sausages from the pan and put them on a plate. 3. Add the chopped onion to the casserole (there will still be some oil in the pan from the sausages) and continue to cook over a low heat for 5-10 minutes, until the onion is slightly soft. Add the garlic and paprika and cook for another minute. 4. Add the chopped potatoes and carrots and stir everything around in the casserole so that the vegetables are coated with the oil. 5. Add the tomatoes and stock (to measure the stock, you can use the empty tomato can – filled up, it will hold 400ml of stock) and the bay leaves. Bring to a simmer (so it’s just bubbling gently). Return the sausages to the casserole. 6. Using your oven gloves, carefully put the casserole into the oven. Cook for 45 minutes, until the potatoes are cooked through, and serve.

Improvements to Westminster Park tennis and football courts Westminster Park has undergone improvement works to its courts. Funded by local Cllrs Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan, Glan Aber Tennis Club and Westminster Park Junior Football Club, the improvements include laying new court surfaces and replacing the old perimeter fencing. The courts are free for public use and open all year round, with many sports clubs using the courts for coaching and training sessions on a weekly basis. The project has had the support of the Friends of Westminster Park - a group comprising of members of the sports clubs and individual park users, who welcomed the upgrade to the sports facility. Cllr Sullivan said: “Improving this valued recreation ground, and maintaining it, is vital to encouraging people to be active and to lead healthier lives. We look forward to seeing an increase in activity.” Westminster Park has benefitted from over £1 million of improvement projects in the last ten years and has won a national Green Flag award every year since 2009. Worrying facts about paying for elderly care I mportant changes are planned for april 2016 to meet the growing demand for support.

It is planned that the cap of care costs will increase from £23,800 to £72,000. However this is not straight forward. The cap will not include the “hotel costs” in a care home i.e. the normal cost of daily living such as food, energy bills and the accommodation. Under these reforms, these so-called “hotel costs” will be set at £12,000 a year. For a typical place in a care home, that accounts for about 1/3 of the fees.

This means that an individual could find themselves paying over £100,000 over three years (£72,000 in care fees and £36,000 in hotel costs) before the cap kicks in. Once it does they will still be liable for the £12,000-a-year hotel costs until their wealth is whittled away.

There are other worries; once the cap kicks in you may not be able to stay in the care home of your choice or even the area.

Statistics say that the elderly live longer if cared for on a 1:1 basis at home. With proper care fee planning and the right care and support, I know that most people can do just that.

But…..

Accessing quality and specialist advice is crucial. The Society of Later Life Advisers was the first not for profit organisation to provide a framework of qualified and empathetic advisors throughout the country to ensure this advice is available and easily accessible to those who need it. They all have the ‘CF8’ long term care qualification which was introduced to avoid miss-selling. Most financial advisers and banks do not have

this specialist training. We are the first independent care provider to be made an affiliate member of Solla. Their first accredited consultant, Brian Blake lives in Bunbury and will provide free advice on the funding of elderly care. He works in conjunction with us to ensure that people plan their finances in the most cost effective way in order to remain living in their own homes for as long as possible.

our live in care services start from £560 per week.

If you would like to discuss the many options available, or would like a consultation with Brian Blake, please contact us to make an appointment.
