Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &

Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Pigmentation 20 To advertise call 350398

Skincare advice with Jane Bryant, from the Hough Green Clinic Hyper-pigmentation is caused by ultra violet rays from the sun. Sunlight stimulates your pigment cells or melanocytes to manufacture pigment called melanin. This is how we get a tan. Damage is caused when there is an over production of pigment in the skin from the melanin. Melanin production is the skin’s way of trying to protect itself from the rays of the sun. We call these pigmentation marks sun spots, liver spots, age spots, freckles (solar lentigenes). The most common areas of the body are the face, backs of hands, shoulders

and chest as these areas are most exposed to the sun, but can appear on any part of the body exposed to the sun. Following sun exposure the pigmentation damage can take up to 20 years for it to develop.

Other causes can be injuries to the skin, acne, certain medications such as antibiotics and hormone treatments when the skin is exposed to the sun. THere iS no cure.

The best prevention is to protect the skin with at least a sun factor 15 sun screen. Discolouration of the skin can be caused by a build up of dead cells. Using a good

gentle scrub 3 times a week will help slough off the dead cells and help alleviate signs of pigmentation. Active acne skins are better to wash with a gentle face wash containing lactic acid as this will naturally exfoliate the dead cells and not be so abrasive to the skin. Treatments for pigmentation are in salon skin peels containing lactic acid. Products containing high levels of vitamin C are very effective as this has a bleaching effect. Laser and IPL treatments are very effective as the light that is emitted from the applicator is attracted to the pigment in the skin. It absorbs the pigment, heats it up and in time the top layer of dark pigment is sloughed off leaving the skin lighter and in some cases eliminates the pigment altogether. Should you expose that area to the sun the pigment will return in time, so using a high factor after treatment is essential. Autumn and winter are ideal seasons to have IPL or laser treatment due to the fact that the sun’s rays are less strong and we are less likely to be exposing ourselves to the sun.

Jane Bryant,

Advanced Skin Health Specialist The Hough Green Clinic Telephone 01244 680414

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge

Taking the Brisket 1. With the cold, dark evenings now upon us, comfort food pushes its way to the front of the agenda. There are few cuts of meat more delicious and comforting than a brisket of beef, slowly cooked and with all the trimmings. 2. Fact: The name Brisket derives from the word “brusket” which comes from Old Norse Brjosk, meaning cartilage. As cattle do not have collar bones this muscle supports about 60% of the body weight of the animal. This may explain the Nordic name. 3. Brisket of beef comes from the front end of the animal. It is probably easiest to imagine it as the chest of the animal. As this muscle does so much work it needs a significant amount of connective tissue and as a result needs long and slow cooking to make it tender. Generally in meat, the more work a muscle does, the more flavour it has, resulting in briskets case as a taste sensation. 4. In addition to this it is great value and can be slowly roasted, casseroled or pot roasted. Brisket is certainly a great joint for all the family and ideal for entertaining and therefore should not be overlooked for dinner parties. Be the first of your friends to try this for a dinner party. It could be a talking point and a turning point!

Beef Brisket – Serves 8 Ingredients: 1.3kg/3Ib lean brisket joint Salt and pepper 2tbsp olive oil 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes 100ml prepared barbecue sauce 2tbsp runny honey 4tbsp Worcestershire sauce 300m/ l/₂ pint beef stock 2tsp smoked paprika powder Method: 1. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 2 / 160oC 2. Heat half the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Place the joint on a chopping board and season with salt and pepper all over. Brown the joint on all sides and transfer to a large ovenproof dish. 3. Add the remaining oil and cook the onion and garlic for 2-3minutes until soft. Transfer to the casserole dish with the joint. 4. Add the tomatoes, barbecue sauce, honey, Worcestershire sauce, stock and paprika. Bring to the boil, cover and slow roast in the oven for 3-3 l/₂ hours until the beef is tender. 5. Transfer the beef to a clean chopping board and slice your brisket nice and thinly. Serve with creamy mash and vegetables.

Scullers go the distance The Long Distance Sculls were held on the Dee under perfect conditions for rowing with very little stream and no wind. In a very crowded session rowers from Queen’s Park Rowing Club took part in the junior course of 2600m. Jack Davies and Morgan Whitley rowed in the J13 X doubles and came first, while the J15X4 quad with Charlie BirchallJones, Henry Dougherty, Aidan Farrelly, Harrison Kendall and cox Morgan Whitley finished a creditable fourth. The WJ15 X quad with Eve Finlay, Rona Fishburn, Eve Lawlor, Zoe Theil and cox Amy Williamson finished fifth whilst Lucy Clegg who rowed the full 5K course took fourth place. These students and the visiting rowers and supporters were able to refuel with an excellent array of homemade cakes, quality beef burgers and drinks at the QPHS rowing club site.

Sofie has the right answers During the open evening in September, pupils from the feeder schools in Year 5 and 6 took part in the Curriculum Treasure Hunt. This involved them visiting all the faculty areas and finding answers to a series of curriculumbased questions. All were keen to win the coveted prize of a brand new Kindle – a lovely new way to enjoy reading. By the end of the evening there was a brimming bucketful of entries which had been deposited by lots of tired but happy primary school children. Deputy headteacher Mrs Logan visited Belgrave Primary School to present the winner, Sofie Gittins, with her prize in assembly.

Cameron and Harrison win Warrington doubles gold At a crowded session at the Warrington Regatta a large contingent of students from Queen’s Park High School took part in rowing which was often punctuated by periods of torrential rain. The J13X4 quad with Cameron Neil, Charlie Birchall-Jones, Harrison Kendall, Will Davies and cox Emily Cox fought a close final but lost out to a Warrington crew. Despite great efforts by other rowers, the only winner in the club was Cameron Neil and Harrison Kendall in the J13 X2 doubles who collected gold.

Emily stars in Burton on Trent regatta On a sunny and sweltering day, QPHSRC rowers along with rowers from the Grosvenor RC took part in the Burton on Trent Regatta. Rowers had to make a 5.30am start from Chester to make the early rowing events. The junior crews from QPHS raced hard in the single and double sculls but were unable to get through the semi-finals. Emily Cox from QPHS in the WJ15X1 single sculls rowed three races winning the final. Emily was also part of the Grosvenor WJ15X4+ quad with Lucy Tilston, Frances Munro, Stella Dixon, Emily Cox and Carmen Lasok-Smith (cox) who rowed through to a thrilling close final.

Students bring hope to Malawi Queen’s Park High School council were delighted to welcome Shaun Williams, one of the founders of the charity 3rd World Hope, to present a cheque for £1384 which was the result of their fundraising for the charity in the academic year 2013-14. Mrs Scanlon, Director of Learning 14-19 who works with the school council, said: “Each year, the school council select a charity based on nominations by staff and students and last year, the excellent work that 3rd World Hope was doing in Malawi really struck a chord with the students who wanted to help other young people get support for their own education and really got behind the charity.” Students raised money through a non-uniform day, charity fundraising events by each tutor group on a dedicated charity day, a bake sale for the staff and the annual V Factor show which was won by year 7 student Louis Frier. Shaun from 3rd World Hope said “Everyone involved in 3rd World Hope is greatly appreciative of the support from Queen’s Park High School over the last year. Their dedication and passion for helping those less fortunate is inspirational. The huge amount raised will be used to help set up our new library in Malawi, Africa. “The library will have solar power with access to computers with syllabuses installed. This will assist the students at our new school as well as making education accessible to the wider community in the area. Thank you all so much for the support!”

Once more unto the breach... Building on the success of last year’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ performance at the Floral Pavilion, 15 students from Year 9 will be taking part in the national ‘School’s Shakespeare Festival’. The festival allows participating schools the opportunity to perform their production on a professional theatre stage and experience an enhanced understanding of what Shakespeare’s texts are all about. Leading the cast this year are Cain Noble (Hamlet), Cameron Neill (Claudius) and Jake Cross (Laertes). In early October students took part in a workshop at the theatre led by the SSF team and were praised for their talent! The premiere of the performance will take place at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton on Tuesday 11th November at 7pm. Tickets are available from the theatre Box Office which can be contacted on 0151 666 0000.

Girls thrive in tournament debut

The U14 Chester and District Girls seven-aside Football Tournament was held at Christleton High School recently. It was also the first time in a number of years that Queen’s Park High School has attended and that is down to the commitment of the girls attending practice run by Miss Egan and Mr Rowlands and their motivation to be part of a successful team. The same commitment and motivation was demonstrated on the pitch throughout the nine games played. Izzy Edmonds in goal showed great strength making some brilliant saves to keep a clean sheet in a number of games. Outstanding performances also came from Julia Neill and Kiera Burke who showed their experience and footballing brain despite only being in year 7 and 8 respectively. The squad of 10 players all showed a great fighting spirit even when playing against academy players from older year groups

Big clean-up nets 73 bags of river rubbish More than 73 bags of litter plus scrap metal were collected, benches painted and a thousand daffodils planted during this year’s Big Dee Clean Up. Around 45 volunteers including residents, and representatives from organisations and businesses, took part in the two day event at the end of September. Damaged fencing was also replaced and some woodland management was carried out. The areas focused on were The Cop, The Meadows, Edgar’s Field, The Groves, Farndon riverside, the path alongside Chester Racecourse and footpaths alongside the River Dee in Saltney. The launch of the event took place at Chester Football Club and included a welcome speech by the Lord Mayor of Chester and Admiral of the Dee, Councillor Bob Rudd. Cllr Rudd said: “What a fantastic achievement for everyone involved over the two days of the Big Dee event. “Everyone worked extremely hard and the clear up and spruce up have really made a difference along the River Dee. “I would like to thank everyone who took part and congratulate them all on a job well done.” Residents joined volunteers from Hickory’s, Chester Aid to the Homeless, Aqua House, Richmond Court, McDonald’s, Friends of the Meadows, Friends of Edgar’s Field, the Riverboat Patrol team, Asda, Farndon Parish Council, Chester Football Club, and used supplies from Helping Hand and Bromborough Paints.

Fading Autumn Colour Gardening by Janet Heath

November colour comes from fruit, berries, foliage and bark and we need to look more closely at individual plants to appreciate their beauty. Fragrance is provided by one of my favourite shrubs, Viburnum bodnantense Dawn which will flower on and off until March. How many plants can you think of that will give such a long period of interest? The honeyed scent greets me every time I leave or arrive at the house. Bark comes into its own in winter with the white bark of Betula utilis jacquemontii, the greenand white striated bark of Acer grosseri which will be complimented by the copper bark of Prunus serrula. If you have room for any of these trees ensure they are planted well away from buildings to prevent root damage to property. Underplant with

Cornus alba Elegantissima with red stems in winter and green and cream foliage in summer. Some grasses still look great in late autumn especially in the early morning light. Miscanthus sinensis grasses have red bronze or silvery tassels depending on variety. This year deciduous trees and shrubs have been showing autumn tints earlier due to a mild winter and plants coming into leaf early. Parthenocissus is a very vigorous climber and needs keeping under control but if you have a blank wall it will give a green wall in spring and summer then colour in shades of red in autumn before the leaves fall. The red leaves contrast well with variegated ivy. Late autumn is the time to prepare your garden for winter.

Tender plants such as salvias, fuschias and agapanthus need mulch around the roots with a layer of well rotted manure or compost to protect from freezing. Acers that need pruning should be pruned in winter rather than spring as they can bleed from cuts in spring. Other overgrown shrubs can be cut back after leaves have fallen so you can see the structure clearly. Prunus species are best pruned in late spring and early summer as they are less likely to get silver leaf disease. Wrap planted pots in bubble wrap to help prevent the plant roots freezing. Cut back unsightly foliage and dig out annuals then if you have the inclination, mulch all your borders with a layer of compost or manure to rot down over winter.
