Golfstorehouse @ Westminster Park
Big improvements at Westminster Park Golfstorehouse West took over the operating of the golf course and café last year and we have had a busy and exciting time so far. With the help of Cheshire West and Chester council we have made a number of changes to the café already, installing a new ceiling, new heating system and new furniture, we are currently redeveloping the kitchen and planning and installing new flooring and more new furniture. We have already substantially increased the opening hours of the café and the provision of food on offer, currently we offer a range of hot, cold drinks, ices and hot and cold snacks, shortly with the redevelopment of the kitchen we are going to offer such favourite as bacon and sausage buns, chips, pies and a range of hot and cold sandwiches. On the golf course, we have invested heavily in machinery and are continually making improvements to both the presentation and layout of the course Co-owner of Golfstorehouse Paul Hodgson is an advanced P.G.A Golf professional and he offers lessons at Westminster Park to golfers of all ages and abilities, Paul has had great success with both complete beginners and established golfers, individual and group lessons are available. Junior golf lessons proved very successful in 2015 and we certainly hope to build on that this year, with the lessons being led by Paul, we offer tri-golf for the younger golfer and a more structured Golf Passport Coaching for the slightly older children, which is a really fun way way to learn golf. For more information on lessons, children’s parties or company team building sessions please call 01244 680231 or e-mail enquiries@ westminsterparkgc.co.uk Or come and see us at the park. Has QPHS got the V FACTOR?
St Mary’s Community
Nursery School
QUEEN’S Park High School students have been showcasing their musical talents at the V Factor event. The show is also a fantastic way of raising money for charity, with Cancer Research UK and the Little Princess Trust benefitting this year. Maisie Versey from Year 7 and her family are supporting the Little Princess Trust, who raise funds to make wigs for children who are diagnosed with cancer. Maisie herself is having all her lovely long locks shaved off during Easter to donate it to the trust. Maisie’s sister, Jess - a former student of QPHS, sadly passed away last year as a result of an inoperable tumour. Maisie’s efforts are all in recognition of everything the charity has done to support her family during this time.

Why not take up croquet this summer SPRING and summer are just around the corner so if you want to try a new outdoor game, perhaps croquet could be for you. Croquet requires some skill, but does not require lots of strength or stamina, so it is ideal for any age and ability. Chester Croquet Club meets in Westminster Park. It is a friendly and successful club with about a hundred members and is always pleased to welcome new members of all standards from absolute beginners to more experienced players. There will be a ‘Taster’ session held on Saturday 16th April at the club for which there is a small charge of £5.00 payable in advance. The session will run from 10am–1pm. If participants then wish to join the Club, beginners’ courses in association croquet and golf croquet will follow at the end of April. Coaching is also available for people who have played before and would like to improve their skills. If you have played before and have no need of a taster session, then please contact the membership secretary to ask about membership. No previous knowledge of the game is needed and all equipment will be provided by the Club. The only requirement is that players must wear flat-soled shoes. If you would like to register or would like more information, please contact the Membership Secretary Sally Slater on 01244 677645 / 07711 374927 or springboard_sally@hotmail.com. Places are very limited this year so please be quick! There will be no spaces available on the day to just turn up, so please do register and pay in advance.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

How to prepare your home for sale By Richard Wheeler Cert.REA MANY people have asked us how to show off their home at its best in this busy market period so we have put together some handy hints and tips on how to prepare your home for sale.
First Impressions
It is vital to create the right first impression and a tidy looking house will attract more viewings, giving you more choices and hopefully a higher price. The first thing a buyer sees is the outside of your home. If looks untidy they will automatically assume that the inside is the same. Take some time to tidy the garden, trim the borders, sweep the drive, add some flower pots or hanging baskets and, if it needs it, even paint the front door.
De-clutter
De-clutter! It’s the phrase most sellers dread, but it doesn’t have to be painful! A large proportion of buyers are moving to gain more ‘space’, so show it off to them, don’t hide it! Make sure smaller or narrower areas such as the hallway, stairs and landing are free from clutter, especially at floor and eye level. A tidy room presents much better than an untidy one so clear away the kids’ toys, put the dog basket in the garage, take down the birthday cards (temporarily) and put the dishes away.
Kitchen
A kitchen is often the engine room of a home where walls and tiles are subject to a greater amount of wear and tear. Before you go ripping it all out, try painting the walls, re-grouting the tiles, deepcleaning cupboard fronts and surfaces, you may be surprised what an effect this has (and it could save you thousands of pounds!). If you are considering replacing the kitchen before you sell, please talk to us first so that we can help you assess the viability, cost and benefit.
Always remember you are selling in a competitive environment. Your house must stand out more to your buyer than any other property for sale at the time.
Bathroom
The bathroom is another key area. It should be clean and fresh, with no water marks or lime scale encrusted taps. Replacing a window blind or shower head & hose can have a huge impact. The suite should be well sealed and the tiles clean and grouted. Clear away the toiletries, fold the towels and put the loo seat down!
Decoration
The standard of decoration is always a consideration so walk through your property with a critical eye. Over time paint work becomes marked especially around light switches and on stairs with no wall rail. Check that all lights have working bulbs, the windows are clean both inside and out, there’s no dripping tap or broken fencing and that the curtains are put up properly.
Outside space
Another important factor for many purchasers is the outside space your home has to offer. Patios and decking should be moss free and clean, the lawn well cut and the borders weeded. If you have a garage, try and keep it in order (although we know this is not always easy!) In autumn months you may need to sweep up leaves and cut back summer growth.
l If you would like any help or advice concerning your home specifically, please call us on 318777 Overleigh or e-mail info@somervillesestateagents.co.uk and we will be happy toRoundabout pop out and seeApril you. 2016

TELOMERES AND THEIR R What are Telomeres? Telomeres are protective tips found at the end of each strand of our DNA which are called chromosomes. Rather like the plastic tip on a shoe lace they help to keep the DNA healthy. Every part of our body is made up of cells and DNA makes up all the cells in our body. DNA makes us who we are. Our cells replenish by copying themselves. Telomeres get shorter each time a cell copies itself, but the DNA stays intact. Telomeres are vital to our health. Telomeres shorten naturally as we age, but can be accelerated by smoking, obesity,
22 To advertise call 350398
lack of exercise, poor diet and stress. Like the plastic tip on the shoe lace, which with wear will fragment and cause the shoe lace to fray, when telomeres reach a critically short length, the DNA strands start to deteriorate and become damaged and the cells cannot do their job, thus causing the body to age. Oxidative stress can also have an effect on telomeres. It causes an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to detoxify the harmful effects through neutralization of anti-oxidants. Free radicals are produced by the toxins in the environment
and in harmful chemicals in our food. This is why it is so important to have a healthy diet rich in anti-oxidants to combat the effects of free radicals. Many scientific studies have shown strong connections between short telomeres and cellular ageing. This also applies to the effects on our skin which is the body’s largest organ. To support our telomeres we must eat a healthy diet full of vegetables and fruit, particularly berries, nuts, seeds, pulses and drink plenty of water. Regular exercise is important and keeping our weight in check will also play a big part.

CH4 History with Bernard Dennis
Travelling to Dodleston from the Rough Hill roundabout at the end of Lache Lane, a short distance after the level crossing the signpost indicates Dodleston to the left. After about a hundred meters or so into Church Road is the well signposted entrance to Chester Lakes on the left. If you glance to your right, directly opposite the Chester Lakes entrance, you will observe a wide gap in the trees, albeit now well overgrown. This ‘gap’ is part of a long established, but sadly neglected driveway known as Balderton Drive. The drive originally connected Eaton Hall to the village of Bretton and less than half a mile from its end a small pathway (marked in blue on the map) leads to Bretton Hall, originally the home of the Ravenscroft family who resided there between the 15th and 17th centuries. In the early part of the 16th century, Thomas Ravenscroft married Katherine Grosvenor and hence began the connection with Eaton Hall. The origins of the Ravenscroft family go well back in time when they first lived at Broadlane Hall, in the grounds of the derelict Hawarden Castle. Broadlane Hall was replaced by the New Hawarden Castle building in 1750’s when it became the home of the influential Glynne family. It subsequently became, and remains to this day, the home of the Gladstones and whose most famous resident was Sir William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898) a British Liberal Politician. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served as Prime Minister four separate times (1868–74, 1880–85, February–July 1886 and 1892–94), more than any other person, and served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times. Gladstone was also Britain’s oldest Prime Minister; he resigned for the final time when he was 84 years old and lived out his life in Hawarden. As a prominent politician and family, Gladstone would have had regular contact with the Grosvenors at Eaton Hall as members of the Royal family, leading politicians and wealthy businessmen were entertained in their splendid and opulent surroundings. The direct route to Eaton Hall from Hawarden would most likely have been via Bretton and through Bretton Lodge (left) that guarded the entrance to Balderton Drive. This lodge was present in the 17th century but demolished in the early 1980s to make way for the extension to the bridge over the newly constructed A55 Chester Southerly-By-Pass. In the early 1500’s

The Balderton Drive
Thomas Ravenscroft may also have used this route by joining the drive further along as he travelled to see his future wife Katherine, resident at Eaton before their marriage. The history and origins of the Balderton Drive are sadly not recorded but it has obviously been in existence for many centuries. An Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century clearly indicates the route from Bretton, via Balderton and thence, across the fields to link up with Belgrave Avenue and eventually to arrive at the hall itself. With the expansion and development of the railway system, the GWR line from Birkenhead, via Chester to Paddington, London was built in 1846. The line passed through Balderton and a tunnel was built to allow traffic on Balderton Drive to cross the line in safety. This is the Balderton Tunnel seen from the level crossing and is 53 yards (48.5 meters) long. It’s more than a bridge and is wide enough to accommodate horses and carriages in safety without being frightened by the steaming ‘monsters’ plying their trade on the rails below. The ‘hump’ of the tunnel can be seen and experienced as you travel into Chester Lakes along part of the route of the original Balderton Drive from Church Road. A portion of the 19th century OS map is reproduced here to show the original route, marked in red, of Balderton Drive through to the Chester Lakes area. Balderton Lodge, which is extant is clearly marked, as is Balderton Diary, the railway station and sidings. Leaving the sidings is the narrow gauge railway that served Eaton Hall with provisions and eminent visitors alike, including King Edward VII and Winston Churchill.

K HIGH SCHOOL The Diamond Jubilee Snack bar facelift gives food for thought Year 9 students have been working on a co-construction project to regenerate the snack bar, with Mr. Parker. Using the topic of co-construction they have begun to manage their own learning by taking responsibility for classwork, setting homework and marking their own work. One group used the idea of wooden block printing technique to create a canvas. Other groups are making concrete table tops, marble lampshades, wooden bench seating and photographs.
Ping pong problem
2016 got off to a great start for the KS3 Science Club. Students worked with Geoff Owens from Urenco, a nuclear fuel supplying company and have been developing team working, problem solving and communication skills. They were faced with a problem: ‘How to transfer a radioactive ping pong ball using only recyclable rubbish’. The students had to use their Science knowledge and creative skills to fix this problem. Lots of creative and innovative designs were made but only one group were successful. Previously students have been experimenting with lots of fun Science activities including bouncy custard balls, non-Newtonian fluids, methane bubbles and ping pong ball launchers. Science Club is open to all KS3 students and new members welcome on a Monday, 3pm in S2.

Handbridge drugs Recently a positive drugs warrant was carried out in the Handbridge area after an increase in drug activity around location. Information from local residents was vital in helping the Police help residents sort issues in their local community. Nobody will be made aware of where information has been received from, but community intelligence is vital in helping us target those individuals committing criminal activities and effecting the quality of life of local communities. Please call 101 or e mail myself if you have any information you would like to discuss. Police alerts I would also like to take the opportunity to encourage residents to sign up to Cheshire Police Alerts. This is an opportunity for residents to keep updated via e mail about the household crime and things of note in their local area. I regularly send out Alerts and believe they are a great tool to communicate with residents. To sign up type in Cheshire Police Alert into google and fill in the registration form.
Please call 101 if you have any issues to report. Also my e mail address is Christopher.fox@cheshire.pnn.police.uk. Please remember if you have any issues the Police and the local councilors hold the following Surgeries on the first Saturday of every month: Chester Street, Saltney – 9am-10.15am Westminster Park Shops – 10.30am – 11.45am Handbridge – Dee Bridge - Opposite the Ship Inn – 12noon-1pm. GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
COLOURFUL SPRING
APRIL is the month when plants really get going and I would like to start by looking at climbers, in particular Clematis. Spring gives a number of varieties to consider. Clematis armandii with larger, white slightly scented flowers is an evergreen climber which will flower even in darker corners of the garden. It needs a sheltered spot with moist well drained soil to do best and bear in mind it will cover a large area. I love Clematis alpina with small hanging bells of flowers in blue, white and pink. Clematis macropetala is particularly beautiful with delicate double flowers and does not get as woody as the alpina varieties. Prune just after flowering by cutting back a little if they get too large. Small perennials such as Allysum and Aubretia provide early season colour and another attractive alpine flower are Auriculas. Similar in size to Primroses they have velvety flowers in a wide range of colours. Very good for moist well drained soil in sun and dislike wet soil. If you have a woodland edge site with moist well drained soil try the stunning Dicentra spectabilis. It has arching stems with white or pink and white hanging flowers. It does die down later in the season but is lovely for a woodland garden. Plant alongside Epimedium a low growing perennial with glossy heart shaped leaves. In early spring they have new bronzy leaves and pale yellow or pink flowers depending on variety. Plant hardy annuals such as sunflowers, nasturtiums and marigolds out in the garden, where they are to flower. If the weather is mild later in April, sow seeds of lettuce, carrots and radishes outside. Make sure roses are fed and look out for aphids on new growth. Spray with a solution of washing up liquid to keep them at bay. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Briarfield near Burton on the Wirral is open on 24th April and has a couple of acres of gardens with alpines, bulbs and herbaceous borders with plants for sale.

Playgrounds go smoke free WESMINSTER Park is one of the many public playgrounds across West Cheshire to go permanently smoke free. Cheshire West and Chester Council has introduced a voluntary no smoking code called Play Smokefree to all of its public playgrounds to deter children from taking up smoking. Cllr Louise Gittins said: “Smoking in children’s play areas can be a fairly common practice among teenagers and adults, and as such can be perceived by youngsters as a normal activity. “This is a voluntary code but we are confident from the feedback we have had via our survey that people welcome the idea. It is really important that we do what we can to try to reduce the number of children taking up a habit that could ultimately kill them.” Adam Smith, advanced health improvement practitioner for Cheshire West and Chester Council with Cllr Louise Gittins, cabinet member for culture, leisure and wellbeing next to Westminster Park playground.
