Ian tries out his kayak on the river after unwrapping it in his garden (inset)
Ian’s cross-Channel paddle BY the time you’re reading this magazine, Broughton man Ian Miller will hopefully be celebrating the completion of a tough cross Channel challenge. Ian was attempting to kayak from Dungeness beach to Boulogne Harbour in Northern France on 23rd July. Depending on the effect of tide drift, he has estimated the journey will be about 25 miles, across the busiest shipping-lane in the world. Ian is hoping to raise lots of money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. His reason for undertaking this crazy challenge is because he has seen first-hand how
the hospice help people with incurable illnesses and their families. “My dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in early 2012 and started attending the hospice as a non-resident in 2013,” said Ian. “It has nothing to do with the fact I turned 40 years of age in January and this is all down to my mid-life crisis...! Saying that, I did only take-up and start kayaking in February this year - a month after my birthday!” Ian has set-up a Just-Giving account www.JustGiving.com/IanMiller007 for people to make donations to.

David (left) with Jon Russell, from The Olde Bookshop in Formby where a book signing was held.
David’s crime novel hits the shelves HANDBRIDGE author David Siddall has just published his latest book. ‘A Man Alone’ is a crime/noir novella set in Liverpool and tells the story of John Doyle, an ordinary man who helps his partner’s teenage daughter when she is abused by her boyfriend. Unfortunately, the boy works for local gangster Barry Wood. Both men are made of the same stuff, stubborn and won’t back down. One act of violence leads to another, Doyle relying on past skills learnt as a paramilitary in Northern Ireland. The violence escalates until a showdown in the local pub is inevitable. Scenes are set around the south end, the centre and the dock areas of Liverpool. According to David, the book has been described in some quarters as an ‘Urban Western’. Born and raised in Handbridge, 50-year-old David is a railway signalman based in Helsby. His writing has appeared in publications such as, All Due Respect, Noir Nation, Albedo One, Supernatural Tales, Dark Visions, Our Haunted World. The book has been published by Full Dark City Press based in Indianapolis, and is available from Amazon in ebook for £1.83 and paperback for £3.55. Also available from The Olde Bookshop in Formby.
Overleigh Roundabout August 2014 Big changes to A55 roundabout WORK will continue until February 2015 on big changes at the A483 / A55 junction. The £5.3m revamp is being undertaken by the Highways Agency and will necessitate several months of traffic disruption. A spokesman for the Agency says: “The scheme will provide additional lane capacity, but will also ensure the existing carriageway is better utilised, which will improve traffic flows and reduce delays. “The scheme will also offer significant safety benefits. A new footbridge for shared use by cyclists and pedestrians will be constructed adjacent to the west bridge.” There will be a new Rough Hill junction and the introduction of traffic lights. The main junction itself will see an extra lane being created inbound towards Chester over the bridge, increasing capacity from three lanes to four. On the left hand side there is a blue hatching which will be a new footbridge created over the A55.

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge
Wanted: Spring Chickens!
In 1937 when my Grandfather first started trading as a high street butcher in Handbridge, there were 12 butchers shops located between ourselves and the Cross. Obviously, this was pre war and there was no such thing as a supermarket. Fast forward to 2014 and we are the only surviving shop of those 13. In addition to that, other butchers took over failing or retiring businesses between the Cross and ourselves and also closed. Statistically the decline of the high street butcher over this long period nationwide is probably quite similar to this. Twenty two years ago just prior to joining my family business I asked my father whether there was a future in our business for me and butchery in general on the high street. He assured me that there was and on that basis I began my training. Now in 2014, I am glad to say that he was right, however a new threat has emerged to the high street butcher - Age. The average age of a high street butcher in the UK is over 50. For the last three decades supermarkets have decimated butchers nationwide. Many butchers that closed were reaching retirement age and did not want to spend large amounts of money on shop refits to try and compete with the supermarkets with retirement looming. Others may have found that trade was so poor that reinvestment was not an option. Either way butchers skills are being lost and a whole generation of school leavers have never even considered butchery as a career. Far more glamorous industries to young people have lured them away from gaining a trade. Once someone has learnt their trade I believe that this pretty much secures a job for life far more than you could find in most industries today. Over the next 10 years or so I would expect there to be less butchers than now, largely due to retirement
and lack of new blood coming into the industry. However I think that will create opportunities for anyone considering a career in butchery. There will always be a market for quality and anyone joining the industry with that ethos will benefit from reduced independent competition.
As I write this blog Holland v Argentina is just about to kick off in the World Cup. On this note did you know that Sheffield Wednesday got its name from originally being a team of local traders including butchers who played after their traditional half day closing on a Wednesday afternoon. This month’s recipe is for a very traditional cut of pork which is very under-rated as far as I am concerned. A fabulous Roast Belly of Pork with fresh Thyme.
Roast Belly of Pork with fresh Thyme - Serves 8
Ingredients: Belly of Pork - thick end on the bone approximately six ribs scored well. Fresh Thyme leaves Salt and freshly ground black pepper Method: Season your pork well with salt and pepper and push your thyme well into the scored crackling. Roast in a very hot oven at 220°C/Gas Mark 7 for 30 minutes to really blast the crackling. Then turn your oven down to 180°C/Gas Mark 4 for approximately another hour. Then push a skewer into the thickest part of the meat. If the juices run clear then the pork is cooked. Return to the oven for longer if necessary. To serve remove the crackling in a sheet. Slice the pork into thick slices and serve with a piece of crackling, apple sauce, mashed potato and savoy cabbage. Superb!

Awards night
Getting a taste of high school Year 5 students from seven primary schools came for a taster day at Queen’s Park High School as part of this year’s ‘Festival of Learning’. The schools included Belgrave, Chester Bluecoat, Dodleston, Eccleston, Lache, Overleigh St. Mary’s and The Arches. Students had the opportunity of working with children from other schools while taking part in a variety of ‘festival’ themed activities and workshops led by QPHS staff. The workshops form part of a successful annual programme which aims to provide Year 5 children with an enjoyable opportunity to experience a secondary school environment for the day and give them the chance to make new friends along the way. Children joining in September, along with their families, visited the Festival Celebration in the front field (aka Fishwick’s Field). The event gave everyone the opportunity to celebrate the children’s achievements over the two days. Among the entertainment included music by QPHS students and staff, face painting, circus games housed by a ‘big top’, a presentation ceremony and a barbeque manned by the in-house chef, Mr Westoby. There was also the opportunity for prospective parents to have an informal tour of the school with governors in advance of the Open Evening on 18th September.
Early July saw another very successful Celebration Evening for the staff and students of Queen’s Park High School. Over 100 subject and faculty awards and nearly 50 attendance awards were presented to students in Years 7 -12. The Lord Mayor of Chester, Cllr Bob Rudd was invited along to present the awards and speak to students, staff and parents in a Keynote speech about achievement and success. Awards were presented for recognition of hard work, achievement, commitment to the wider school community and 100% attendance since September. A number of students were nominated for more than one award. Following on from a very busy term this was an extremely positive way to end the year, celebrating the things which are done well at school. Queen’s Park High School will move forward positively from this and staff and students are looking forward to more progression, success and achievement next year.

Charity day brings hope
QPHS students have always been involved in raising money for a nominated charity. This year, the school council decided on a charity day to give a boost to the chosen charity Third World Hope. All students and staff were invited to come in their own clothes in exchange for a donation to the charity and every tutor group came up with their own way to raise money. There were lots of events going on around school on that day from sales of cakes, loom bands, bring and buy, to car washing, penalty shoot outs and Ryan Mayled, a year 10 student even offered to get his head shaved and legs waxed in front of a paying audience! At break time, the staff held a coffee and cake morning and at lunch there was a Staff v 6th form football match. In the evening, at annual ‘V’ Factor talent contest, the winner was Louis Frier, from year 7, with Liam Thompson (year 10) the runner-up and Eve Lawlor (year 9) in third. Profits from the sale of tickets going towards the charity which works with disadvantaged communities in Africa by empowering them to become self-sufficient.

Arts professor Emma turns tour guide! Curzon Park resident Dr Emma Roberts recently conducted a guided tour of Chester with an important group of visitors from China. These were the winners of the Liverpool biannual international John Moores Painting Prize, and they were the winners in the Chinese section of the competition. They were over from Shanghai and used the studios of John Moores University’s School of Art & Design in order to make new work for their forthcoming exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery. Emma is Head of BA (Hons) History of Art at LJMU and has been involved with the Shanghai / Liverpool collaboration. Emma said: “As a resident of Chester, and someone who is passionate about the beauties and treasures of the city, I enjoyed creating an itinerary for the students and their mentor, Professor Lingmin from the Fine Arts Academy of Shanghai University. Also with us was Professor Li Li, an Interior Design specialist from Chongqing University, who is working with me at LJMU for one year on a sabbatical. Emma with Chinese visitors in the “We viewed all the major sites in Cathedral and Eastgate Street Chester and many other lesserknown things too. Particular highlights of course were Chester Cathedral, the Roman Shrine to the Goddess Minerva in Edgar’s Field, the city walls and the Grosvenor Museum. We topped off the day with a traditional British afternoon tea of sandwiches, scones, jam, clotted cream and cakes. “The visitors were most impressed with our historic city and took away many photographs to show their friends and families back in China.”

How to Prepare your Home SaleLtd James Whiffen for Joinery ByEstablished Richard Wheeler Cert.REA 1991
Many people have asked us how to show off their home at its best in this busy market period so we have put together some handy hints and tips on how to prepare your home for sale.
Family business run by Jim Whiffen who is a time served joiner with 36 years experience in all aspects of Carpentry and Joinery
It is vital to create the right FIRST IMPRESSION and a tidy looking house will attract more viewings, giving you more choices and hopefully a higher price. The first thing a buyer sees is the outside of your home. If looks untidy they will automatically assume that the inside is the same. Take some time to tidy the garden, trim the borders, sweep the drive, add some flower pots or hanging baskets and, if it needs it, even paint the front door. The standard of dEcORaTION is always a consideration so walk through your property with a critical eye. Over time paint work becomes marked especially around light switches and on stairs with no wall rail. Check that all lights have working bulbs, the windows are clean both inside and out, there’s no dripping tap or broken fencing and that the curtains are put up properly.
Specialists in Stairs and Balustrades for any situation, traditional or contemporary in A kITchEN is often the engine room of a home where walls and tiles are subject to a greater of wear and tear. Before you go ripping it all out, try painting the walls, Oak,amount Ash, Walnut, Pine, Glass, re-grouting the tiles, deep-cleaning cupboard fronts and surfaces, you may be surprised what an effect this hasSteel, (and it could save you thousands of pounds!). If you are considering Stainless Chrome, etc... replacing the kitchen before you sell, please talk to us first so that we can help you assess the viability, cost and benefit.
Free, no obligation, exact The BaThROOM is another key quote area. It should be clean and fresh, with no water marks
or lime scale encrusted taps. Replacing a window blind or shower head & hose can have a huge impact. The suite should be well sealed and the tiles clean and grouted. Clear away the toiletries, fold the towels and put the loo seat down!
Visit website dE-cluTTER! It’s the phrase most sellers dread, but it doesn’t have to be painful! A www.jameswhiffen.com large proportion of buyers are moving to gain more ‘space’, so show it off to them, don’t hide it! Make sure smaller or narrower areas such as the hallway, stairs and landing are or email info@jameswhiffen.com free from clutter, especially at floor and eye level. A tidy room presents much better than
an untidy one so clear away the kids’ toys, put the dog basket in the garage, take down the birthday cards (temporarily) and put the dishes away.
Call at any time: Another important factor for many purchasers is the OuTSIdE SPacE your home has to 07515 929 083 offer. Patios and decking should be moss free and clean, the lawn well cut and the borders weeded. If you have a garage, try and keep it in order (although we know this is not always easy!) In autumn months you may need to sweep up leaves and cut back summer growth.

always remember you are selling in a competitive environment. your house must stand out more to your buyer than any other property for sale at the time. t can’t have escaped anyone’s notice that 2014 commemorates 100 years since the beginning of the so called ‘Great War’ in Europe. Many new books, articles and television programmes featuring varying angles and opinions on the subject have already started appearing although the war itself didn’t of icially declared until 4 August 1914. The consequences of the shots that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 were to reverberate across Europe. The subsequent human cost of the resulting conflict to the nations involved meant that something like 8.4 million servicemen and seven million civilians perished. There was hardly a family in Europe that wasn’t affected in one way or another; children left fatherless and women would live their lives as widows or spinsters after their men were slaughtered on the foreign battlefields.
There wasn’t a city, town, village or hamlet across the British Isles that wasn’t directly involved in the recruitment process and up until 1916 it was purely voluntary to ‘sign up’ for the honour to go and fight for your country.
Conscription during the Great War began when the British government passed the Military Service Act in 1916. The act specified that single men aged 18 to 41 years old were liable to be called up for military service unless they were widowed with children or ministers of a religion. There was a system of Military Service Tribunals to adjudicate claims for exemption upon the grounds of performing civilian work of national importance, domestic

hardship, health and conscientious objection. The law went through several changes before the war ended. Married men were exempt in the original Act, although this was changed in June 1916. The age limit was also eventually raised to 51 years old. Recognition of work of national importance also diminished, and in the last year of the war there was some support for the conscription of clergy. Conscription lasted until mid 1919.
Dodleston and the surrounding villages of Lower Kinnerton, Gorstella, Balderton and Marlston-cum-Lache all played their part in the recruitment drive. The Roll of Honour in St Mary’s Church lists seventy four who either volunteered or were conscripted into varying regiments or services. Of these, four men didn’t return and their names are recorded on the memorial in the church. Each year on Armistice Sunday, their names, plus two other men who died in the subsequent service of their country, are read out with dignity and reverence.
Subsequent research by Dodleston Local History Group has established that in addition to the four whose names are recorded on the church memorial, another
four men listed on the Roll of Honour also died in the conflict. Why they were not recognised is a mystery yet to be resolved but their names will now be remembered for the future. As part of the Cheshire Heritage Open Days weekend, Dodleston Local History Group is preparing an exhibition to commemorate those from the locality who went to the Great War.
It will also endeavour to display what life was like in a rural community that almost entirely relied upon agriculture for its economy. Out of a total population of less than 400 souls, seventy four men were absent from the daily duties! Women, children and those exempt from armed service would have to cope with hard manual chores and still maintain an existence for their dependents. Life would have to go on, there was no option. Crops had to be harvested, fields ploughed and cows milked! They were Home Alone.
The Great War – Home Alone exhibition will be in St Mary’s Church on Saturday 13 September and Sunday 14 September 2014.
