16 BOREDOM is seen as a key reason for youth crime during the summer. So the local police and a housing trust have teamed up to offer free sports sessions throughout the summer holidays in Handbridge and the Lache aimed at young people. Also in this edition we’ve got news from Queen’s Park High, the National Trust Volunteers, the Westminster Park fair and an Eaton Hall exhibition at the Grosvenor Museum.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &
Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends
and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

NAMMT(Rm) Handbridge Flower Club In July the club held a Strawberry Tea in the garden of one of the members, with a variety of stalls and a fantastic raffle. It was a very enjoyable event, the proceeds of which will go to charity. A demonstration entitled “All Kinds of Everything” by Lorraine Simcox, from Leek, was the last before the summer break -- there is no meeting in August. We return on 15th September at 1.45pm to St Mary’s Parish Hall, for a demonstration by Laura Long from the West Midlands. Visitors (£5) are welcome to join us. Contact 01244 683715 for details.

The competition held at Victoria Park in Warrington saw him jump a whopping 12.19m to claim his championship title. Cain then went on to be the youngest triple jump competitor from all the northern counties at the Mason Trophy at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham in June when he came a credible fifth with a jump of 12.18m. Cain’s sporting success doesn’t stop there though; he has been nominated for Cheshire Schools Football under 16 squad after winning the Senior Trophy at the Cheshire Inter Association Cup at Middlewich Football Club last month.

BREXIT: What does it mean The Diamond Jubilee for the housing market? In the uncertain climate following Brexit, the questions we at Somerville’s are being asked most frequently are how Brexit is affecting the property market and what advice can we give. Richard Wheeler, Director of Somerville’s with over 20 years’ experience in the property market, responded to the main issues saying “We are currently seeing a knee-jerk reaction with an immediate slowdown in sales shortly after the vote. “However, buyers are already returning to the market place and offers have begun to come in again this week. New instructions have been unaffected and there is still
a shortage of ‘quality homes’ within most price bands.” Whilst a cautious market is anticipated by Somerville’s over the coming months, Richard is also optimistic that potentially lower interest rates will boost the housing market and says “I expect to see a degree of cautiousness from families thinking about moving, who may decide to wait and see what happens over the next few months. “Whenever we have a period of uncertainty it creates short term turmoil in the market place which is then usually overhyped by media commentators with little or no knowledge. This may actually help support current prices by slowing the supply to a still
steady demand. There will also be a number of people waiting to see what happens with interest rates. If rates fall it will encourage buyers which will help boost confidence and again support prices, possibly even cause a small rise in AHP (average house price).” In summary, it is Richard’s view that the housing market is primarily driven by supply and demand not EU legislation or regulation and overall, the demand is still higher than the supply and will probably remain so for the next few years at least. If you are considering moving home and would like any further advice or a free market valuation please do not hesitate to contact us.

Dramatic visit to London! A total of 39 students from Years 7-12 travelled down to London for an exciting two-day West-End theatre experience. Over the two days they saw productions of The Phantom of the Opera and The Play That Goes Wrong. Four of our lucky students were fortunate enough to experience a unique opportunity with a backstage tour of the Phantom stage plus a meet and greet with the cast and crew! The following day featured a two-hour dance workshop at Pineapple Dance Studios led by West End choreographer Katie Bradley.

K HIGH SCHOOL The Diamond Jubilee Big business inspiration Year 9 students were given the opportunity to visit the Bank of America Merrill Lynch on the Chester Business Park to take part in an ‘Inspiring the Future’ event. They participated in a speed networking event where they were able to ask questions to a huge array of BAML employees, from the manager of the entire Chester site to people working in HR, Investment and Corporate Banking and staff who have been based all over the world. At the end of the event, Dan Kefford and Felix Cresswell represented Queen’s Park in the feedback sessions and were able to articulate a range of things they had learned during the session about the skills, qualities and pathways required for such a huge range of careers.
Success on the water Under near perfect conditions with constant sunshine throughout the day, Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club travelled to Trentham Gardens near Stoke-on-Trent. The day saw many successes with everyone getting through to finals; Gwilym Harris winning the J14 single, Harrison Kendall-Smith in the J15 single, Sixth Form students, Amy Williamson and Emily Cox in the WJ18 double and Ben Newell in the J18 single. The club’s Year 7 rowers also competed for the first time with James Cox in a Single and Joe Bamber, Iestyn Burke, Dylan Howard, James Cox and Ben Cowan in the quad. Sadly all had to compete against Year 8s as there were no Year 7 entries from any other clubs.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
HOT COLOURS FOR AUGUST
AUGUST is a month where perennials come to the fore with stunning colours and a plant for every type of soil. Daisy style flowers are always popular and one of the best for a sunny garden with soil that does not dry out are Heleniums. They grow to about 80cms tall and have yellow, orange or red flowers that last for a few weeks if you keep then dead headed. If you plant them in front of the potentially tall, light yellow daisy flowers of Helianthus Lemon Queen, you will get a long display of colour. Lemon Queen does need a heavier soil that does not dry out. For those with heavy wet soil, August is the best time of year for flowering. Two plants that will grow up each year from nothing to 2m are Eupatorium maculatum and Actaea simplex. Both like a fertile moisture retentive soil and are definitely for the back of the border. As you can see from the photo, the Eupatorium has tall stems topped with frothy heads of pink flowers and is planted behind Geranium Buxton Blue, a long flowering geranium. Actaea (previously known as Cimicifuga) simplex Brunette has dark purple foliage and the flowers are tall wands of white tapering bottlebrush flowers.
Another lovely climber for late summer is Clematis Perle d’Azur. This clematis has light blue blooms and has a long period of flowering. Plant with roses or to climb into a shrub that flowered earlier in the season and cut back hard in early spring to about 50cm. August is the last month to trim conifers so that new growth has time to mature before winter frosts. Plant seeds of Winter lettuce and Land Cress for salad leaves. Make sure your lift onions and dry in the sun before storage. Pumpkins and squashes can be lifted off the bare soil with straw to prevent damage. If you would like to visit gardens for ideas, I suggest you look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Laskey Farm, Thelwall near Warrington is open on 13th and 14th August and you can see late flowering herbaceous borders, water garden and prairie planting with drifts of perennials. The Birches Mollington, near Chester is also open on 13th and 14th August with herbaceous borders, a grass and fern area , orchard and vegetable garden.

We work across Cheshire, the Marches (Chirk and Erddig) and the Wirral. What constitutes a work day? You can choose to work on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday. Arrive at the site at 10am (it may be possible to share transport but your own car is an advantage) and work until 4pm (with regular breaks – mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon). Do what you feel capable of, enjoy the company of like-minded people and breathe good fresh air! There is always a task for everyone. No prior knowledge or experience is required, only a willingness to get involved and work hard. Be ready for any weather and any job. After completing 50 hours of volunteering, there is the added bonus of receiving a National Trust volunteers card which entitles you to free entry at all National Trust properties, and discounts in some of their shops and cafes. If you are looking for an opportunity to spend time outside, give something back to the countryside and have fun – whatever your age or abilities – you can get in touch by contacting Dick Pole at dickpole@zcl-uk.net

Eaton Hall print on show A DRAMATIC screenprint inspired by Eaton Hall has gone on display at the Grosvenor Museum. John Piper’s 1987 screenprint ‘Façade’ is based on the curtain which he designed for a 1942 performance of ‘Façade - An Entertainment’, which comprises poems by Edith Sitwell (1887-1964) recited over an instrumental accompaniment by William Walton (1902-83). The poems were recited behind the curtain using a megaphone through the central mask. Alongside the mask is the suggestion of a Gothic house, folly, garden and lake, together with a dragonfly, butterfly and the moon. The façade in Piper’s design was inspired by the entrance front of Eaton Hall in William Porden’s Regency Gothic incarnation. Eaton came into the possession of the Grosvenor family in the 1440s, and the first house on the present site was built in 1675-82. The house was transformed in 1804-14 by William Porden for the 2nd Earl Grosvenor, and in 1823-5 wings were added by Benjamin Gummow. The result was a spectacular Gothic mansion with spiky buttresses, pinnacles, battlements and turrets. The house was remodelled in 1846-51 by William Burn, and in 1869-83 Alfred Waterhouse transformed it into a Wagnerian palace for the 1st Duke of Westminster. This was demolished in 1961-3, leaving only the chapel and stables. A modern house was built in 1971-3, which in turn was transformed in 1989-91 for the present Duke. John Piper (1903-92) was a painter of architecture, landscape and abstract compositions, a designer for the theatre and of stained-glass windows, and a writer on the arts. In the 1940s and 1950s he was one of the

best known and most highly regarded painters in England. He began his career as a landscape painter, then experimented with abstraction in the 1930s before returning to representational painting, particularly architectural subjects. He is one of the few artists whose reputation is based on the interpretation of architecture, capturing the essence of a building’s character in line and paint to evoke feeling and emotion. Piper had been making prints since the 1920s but from the 1960s printmaking became an increasingly significant aspect of his work. Working with the screenprinter Chris Prater at Kelpra Studio, Piper became fascinated by the wide range of techniques available to him. ‘Façade’ was screenprinted at Kelpra in 1987, just five years before Piper’s death. Maurice Rider, Chairman of the Grosvenor Museum Society, said: “Dramatic, romantic and evocative, ‘Façade’ is a highly characteristic example of John Piper’s art. Inspired by Eaton Hall, one of the most magnificent of Gothic Revival houses, it makes a fascinating addition to the museum’s fine collection of modern prints. “I am delighted that the Grosvenor Museum Society has been able to help with this important acquisition.” l Maurice Rider, Chairman of the Grosvenor Museum Society and Councillor Louise Gittins, Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Health and Wellbeing.
