RESIDENTS of Westminster Park have started to study the plans relating to the 1,400 house Wrexham Road development. Commenting on the plans, Brian Westcott of the WPRA said: “These plans contain a vast amount of information which must be carefully examined. We are astonished that the Council have put a standard consultation expiry date of three weeks on these plans, finishing on 11 July 2017. It is clearly going to take more like three months to give these plans the attention that they deserve. “The plans have been promised by the developers Paycause for over a year and a half, and responding in such a tight timescale is totally unacceptable. We hope that the Council will reconsider,” he added. The first of four planning applications to build 1400 houses on the Wrexham Road site was submitted to CWAC at the end of June. Another three more applications are expected in the coming weeks. This first application contains two parts: Part A which requests full planning permission to build 509 dwellings to the south of the site, and Part B which concerns outline planning permission for the associated infrastructure including shops, a health centre, pub, and nursery. These plans contain a vast amount of information, in 47 separate documents, which will take a long time to download and read. The other applications are likely to be a similar size. Parents gain revenge in dragon boat grudge match Queen’s Park High School parents earned a measure of revenge when they took on the staff in a dragon boat race on the River Dee. The staff had won for the previous two years, but the parents, also known as ‘RiverRats’, were in determined mood, wearing Spartan-like blue bandanas and war painted faces in an attempt to psych out their opposition. Mr Clubb and his team’s frenzied splashing couldn’t cope as the parents won two out of the three races to claim the spoils.

SUMMER COLOUR August usually bring the late flowering perennials such as Japanese Anemone. As we have had a mild winter and dry spring into early summer, some plants are flowering almost a month early. So I am going to suggest plants that usually flower in August but may be going over this year! Not many shrubs flower in late summer but one that will give white flowers is Eucryphia x nymansensis Nymansay. A bit of a mouthful to say, but if you have space (it will achieve 10m by 4m in time), a sheltered spot and soil that is slightly acidic it will flower over a long period with many pure white flowers as can be seen from the photo. There are good examples on the Wirral where there is a maritime climate. Perennials that flower in August include Actaea Brunette which has dark purple foliage and then sends up tall spires of white bottlebrush flowers. Plant it next to glossy green leaves to show the foliage. It likes a moisture retentive soil and flower stems will soar to 2m in height. If you plant yellow Crocosmia Sulphurea and Kniphofia Little Maid in front of the Actaea, the yellow flowers will show well against the dark foliage. All prefer a moisture retentive soil. Clematis flowering in August will give colour if grown through a shrub that flowered earlier in the year. Clematis viticella varieties such Etoile Violette with rich dark blue flowers will do well in a shady spot. For a larger more robust plant try Clematis tangutica with yellow pixie hat shaped flowers in abundance. Jobs to do in the garden include planting daffodils, crocus and chionodoxa bulbs. Dead head roses and buddleia flowers to keep the plants looking good. Prune evergreens in August but not later as new growth is more likely to be damaged by frost. Pinch out the tops of runner beans and tomato plants to encourage production of beans and tomatoes. Keep them well watered in dry weather. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. Rory stars at Big Bang Fair Students went to the Big Bang Fair in Liverpool, where they presented the Science projects they had been working on in Science Club. This year’s projects included fireproof materials, chemical rockets, tooth whitening products, Scaletrix forces and reaction times. All groups presented their ideas to a group of judges and viewed the exhibition to learn about STEM careers and to grab some freebies. Kiara in Year 8 enjoyed the different activities at the event and speaking to the judges about her fireproof materials project. James and Tyler also in Year 8 enjoyed watching the Big Bang shows on explosions and developing their communication skills when they presented to the judges. Selfless Ben wins sports award Congratulations to Year 13 student, Ben Newell, who received the coveted Michael Ord Award this year at Queen’s Park High School for his outstanding attitude towards his BTEC studies and continued support with the PE Department. Ben is also a very active member of Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club and continues to dedicate considerable hours to coaching and safeguarding rowers in his role as launch boat operative. Ben was presented with the prestigious memorial trophy by Stuart Ord who set it up in honour and memory of his son Michael. Michael, a former Queen’s Park High School student and keen sportsman, died of meningitis in 1993, aged 14. Curriculum Team Leader for Physical and Performing Arts, Mr Clubb, said: “This is an extremely cherished award and awarding this to Ben has been a real highlight for the year. Ben thoroughly deserves this award, we are very grateful for all the hard work he puts into the wider community at QPHS.” Mr Clubb added: “Ben is also an extremely accomplished rower himself and has recently had a boat named after him for his commitment to QPHS Rowing Club!” The Michael Ord Award is a particularly important and meaningful memorial trophy presented to one nominated student each year for their outstanding contribution to Sport. Ben’s name has already been engraved onto the honours plaque which lists previous years’ winners dating back every year to1994.
