Handbridge play area isn’t on the slide any more! THE play area at Appleyards Lane, in Handbridge, has had a much overdue facelift. Cllrs Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan campaigned very hard for the play area to be refurbished because it appeared to be neglected and they were very disappointed to see the overgrown weeds and the missing play equipment. They used their members’ budgets to get the play equipment refurbished but it still required more work and the missing play equipment needed to be replaced in order to bring it up to standard. Residents requested improvements stating how much nicer it would be for children to play and enjoy open views over the meadows. Cllr Razia Daniels said “It is really great to see the improvements finally made after a lot of campaigning to bring about the changes and it was really nice to try out the new play equipment. Cllr Neil Sullivan added “I would like to thank Cllr Eveleigh Moore Dutton, former Conservative Executive Member for listening to our residents requests and enabling this great work to take place at Appleyards Lane Play Area in Handbridge. 20mph zones for CH4? HANDBRIDGE, Westminster Park, Curzon Park and the Lache are among the areas earmarked by Cheshire West and Chester Council for a 20mph speed limit. The aim is to reduce road collisions, encourage more children to walk to school and reduce pollution. The widespread introduction will concentrate on roads where mean speeds are currently less than 24 mph and around schools where the mean speed is currently less than 30 mph. As part of the preparation for the roll out, speed limit assessments will be undertaken to gather information about the priorities for the programme. Councillor Brian Clarke, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Infrastructure said one of the biggest aims was to encourage more children to walk to school as well as reduce the number of road traffic collisions He said: “There are significant benefits with the introduction of 20 mph speed limits 10 To advertise call 350398

and these will improve community cohesion and individual mental wellbeing with people spending more time in their street rather than trying to get away from the traffic that is actually there. People will feel safer to walk, to jog, to cycle.” Councillor Clarke said: “The Council will take reasonable steps to ensure there is awareness in the local community of the proposals and we will consult with all interested parties – Police, local Councillors, Town and Parish Councils and all parties affected by the speed limit change. ” Cabinet agreed to fund the 20mph schemes with a budget of £200,000 per year for four years. It also agreed to endorse the preparation and development of a report detailing which areas would benefit the most from the revised speed limit, how the schemes would be prioritised and a work programme formulated for consultation.

Creative constructions at St Mary’s Nursery The children at St. Mary’s Community Nursery School are having fun making model homes and houses using junk materials. Expert sheds light on school’s war dead A local expert came into school to help with historical research into the soldiers commemorated on the World War I & II remembrance memorials at Queen’s Park High School. Nigel Meyrick, a former student of the school, is starting a project that will research the names of the soldiers and former students who lost their lives in the wars, which will then feed back into lessons and assemblies here at the school. He is always happy to find more historical sources, so if you have any knowledge or photographs about family members involved in the great conflicts of World War I or II he would be happy to hear from you at pelatondesign@gmail. com.

Year 9 Girls at QPHS have been taking up the opportunity to use the on-site salon ‘Queenies’ as an after school club. A charity event for all staff to come along and be a client was held so the girls could showcase what they had learned so far. They hope to offer this as a regular slot on a Tuesday after school, during the Enrichment Programme, so students can come along and be pampered.

QUEEN'S PARK H Curtain up on the big show

Excitement is mounting for the big production of Little Shop of Horrors in February. Based around the 1960’s in Mr Mushnik’s failing flower shop, Seymour, an orphan and an outcast tries to win the heart of his secret love Audrey. He thinks of a plan to save the store with a strange and interesting plant he’s named Audrey II, but he doesn’t realise what lies ahead when business starts to flourish and people start to disappear as the blood thirsty plant starts to grow and grow. . . Over 110 students spanning from Year 7 – 13 have been rehearsing for the show since September and their efforts will culminate in five performances. As part of this intensive process, students have been working away at the Conway Centre in Anglesey, taking part in singing, dancing and acting master classes. The show provides opportunities for students interested in not only musical theatre, but stage management, technical operation of lighting and sound, and of course, musicianship as a member of the band. The first showing will be a matinee performance to Year 5 children and staff from partner primary schools on Monday 8th February followed by four evening performances which commence at 7pm on Tuesday 9th February each evening through to Friday 12th February. Exploring city’s hidden history Year 11 historians toured Chester city centre in order to provide physical examples of their GCSE study of Medicine & Health through time. The students found unfamiliar sites within a very familiar context, including Roman remains in a number of venues across the city including ‘Spudulike’. They explored dark age cathedrals, medieval plagues, monasteries, renaissance town houses (hidden in Sofa Workshop), Georgian hospitals and Victorian slums.

NEIGHBOUR HELPS TO CATCH WESTMINSTER PARK BURGLARS Two males were arrested and charged for a burglary on Westminster Avenue recently. Officers quickly responded after a neighbour reported suspicious males in their neighbour’s garden. Two males from the Liverpool area were stopped near to the scene in possession of items which were identified as being from a house on Westminster Avenue. Entry had been gained via an insecure first floor window. All the stolen property was recovered. The above incident was a great of example of a vigilant neighbour calling the Police when witnessing a suspicious incident. The neighbour’s vigilance has enabled the Police to attend and arrest these males who otherwise may have not been arrested. On 3rd January I attended another burglary

on Selkirk Road, Curzon Park that had occurred between 1st and 3rd January. This burglary shows that despite the recent arrests there has still been someone active committing crime in the area. SPRING FEBRUARY can be mild or freezing so it is difficult to plan for flowering colour so bulbs like snowdrops give colour. Crocus varieties with large yellow flowers attract birds that destroy the flowers. I find the species crocuses such as Crocus Tommasinianus better as they have smaller flowers which open wide in the sunshine and are not usually damaged by birds. Chionodoxa or Glory of the Snow has small starry white, pink or blue flowers. They will grow in light or heavy soils given adequate drainage. If you require exotic flowers then plant the tiny Iris histroides Katharine Hodgkin. They will grow in well drained soil in sun or shade. Another good medium sized shrub for winter is witch hazel. Hamamelis x intermedia varieties such as Diane, with red flowers or orange flowered Jelena, have branches festooned with tiny, tissue paper spidery scented flowers and good autumn leaf colour. They do best in an open but not windswept position. If you have a warm sheltered, south or west facing wall or fence then you can try to grow a winter flowering clematis such as Clematis cirrhosa Freckles or Wisley Cream. Keep on planting bare rooted fruit, shrubs or hedging plants. Feed emerging bulbs such as daffodils and tulips with a general purpose fertilizer to enable them to grow well for the following years flowers. Remove dead foliage from plants stored in a garage or cold greenhouse to prevent diseases and keep plants lightly watered but not saturated. Put your seed potatoes in a cool light place to start to chit ie produce shoots, ready for planting from March onwards. I am going to re-pot my Hostas, Azaleas and Blueberry all of which are grown in pots. They need some new soil each year so I tip them out of the pots, remove some of the soil from the top and base of the roots and add fresh compost such as John Innes No3 or ericaceous compost for the Azaleas and Blueberry. If you have an out or control wisteria, cut back the long thin shoots to 2 buds and prune out old wood that is congested. Cut back Buddleja, honeysuckles and Lavatera in February too.
