Westminster Park should be a riot of colour this summer thanks to bulb planting by local schools and volunteers. Local councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan donated their members’ budget to fund the planting.

Community volunteering has also led to improvements at an area of the Duke’s Drive. Elsewhere in the magazine, you can read about the year ahead for Handbridge Community Association, the opening of a coffee shop at Queen’s Park High, a book about the city’s climate and suggestions of whether a town council is needed for Chester.

Duke’s Drive facelift in the pipeline Utility contractors and green-fingered volunteers have helped Cheshire West and Chester Council transform an area of Duke’s Drive into a new community space. United Utilities and LiMA have recently been working to install a new pipeline through the councilmanaged section of the historic path. Popular with walkers, runners and bird spotters, the Duke’s Drive was originally a carriage drive to the Duke of Westminster’s Eaton Hall estate. It stretches from Overleigh just south of the Grosvenor Bridge to the heart of the estate. In addition to the pipeline work, the contractors devoted staff time and materials to create a path and rockery in the new Community Garden area, next to the gates at Overleigh Roundabout. The project aims to create a garden containing wildflowers and orchard trees for the enjoyment of the community: a project which will encourage local residents to come and help with planting and management of the area. United Utilities, with its contract partner LiMA have been on site since February 2016, with works and reinstatement anticipated to finish at the Duke’s Drive in the next month or so. Representatives of both organisations, conservation volunteers from Turning Point and members of Friends of Duke’s Drive joined staff from CW&C Greenspaces and Localities and the two local members, Councillors Razia Daniels and Neil Sullivan at a ‘Thank You’ event to acknowledge the valued contribution from United Utilities and LiMA and their assistance in ensuring the pipeline project ran smoothly, with minimal disruption to site users and visitors. Cllr Louise Gittins said: “The new community space would not have been possible without the help of United Utilities and all our wonderful volunteers. It is a great example of what can be achieved when everyone pulls together. “Local residents will soon have an area they can be proud of which will be a great community asset: wildflower planting and benches will be in place ready for next spring.”

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Handbridge, Curzon Park, Westminster Park &

Hough Green areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ON THE BEAT with Police Community Support Officer Chris Fox

Dodgy door-to-door salesmen Recently residents have mentioned to me about a group of males going door to door around the Handbridge Park area selling household goods and claiming they are ex-offenders who have been sent by the probation service. The Probation service would not send ex offenders out in this way and if approached in this way I would recommend residents to advice the person that the local Police have advised not to purchase items door to door. A door to door salesman should have a Pedlars licence issued by the local Police Force. If you believe that the door to door salesman is not genuine please call 101 and we will send out patrols to check the people out. Residents have also reported these males been abusive when they decline to buy goods, again call 101 if you experience any issues. Please call 101 if you have any issues to report. Also my e mail address is Christopher.fox@cheshire.pnn.police.uk. Please remember if you have any issues the Police and the local councilors hold the following Surgeries on the first Saturday of every month: Chester Street, Saltney – 9am-10.15am Westminster Park Shops – 10.30am – 11.45am Handbridge – Dee Bridge - Opposite the Ship Inn – 12noon-1pm. Try Nordic walking Have you wondered why people have been seen walking around Westminster Park with ski poles? They are taking part in one of the current fitness crazes – Nordic walking. It’s said to be a great way to keep fit, to keep mobile and to keep going. Kerley’s Nordic Walking in conjunction with the Neuro Therapy Centre, of River Lane in Saltney, offers classes especially aimed at people with medical or mobility problems that limit their walking. Everyone can get something out of a Nordic Walking Session. All equipment is provided and the instructor is a retired doctor knowledgeable about the benefits of exercise and practical training when you have a medical issue. The classes cost £5 and are at 3pm on Wednesdays at Westminster Park.

Community group looks ahead to a busy 2017 It’s January, and that means planning time for the Handbridge Community Association (HCA), writes Jessica Pamphlett. We are a registered charity whose aim is to engage and support Handbridge residents of all ages through events and community-based projects. Last year we organised a number of successful events including a summer fun day for families, a Halloween party and the Christmas Pictures from last year’s summer event which brought the community and the various garden party businesses of Handbridge together through interactive challenges... and mulled wine! This year we are looking to expand our reach within the community, providing events for older residents, young people and families alike, and also to develop fundraising opportunities for the charity so that we can continue to keep the events free of charge. We are interested in finding new members and volunteers who might like to join the HCA and support us in planning and implementing events. We would also happily support any fundraising ideas that volunteers may have to help us continue. The events we have explored so far for this year include an Easter event/ parade and egg hunt, a summer garden party, teenage/ youth projects in collaboration with the Handbridge schools, a local history/geocache project and an even bigger and brighter Christmas community event. You can contact the HCA on Facebook (Handbridge Community Association) and Twitter @handbridgeCA, or my email address is jessica.pamphlett@gmail.com. We currently meet every first Tuesday of the month at The Carlton Tavern, Handbridge at 6.30pm. We are hoping to find an alternative community venue for meetings in future as we realise that a pub is not inclusive for all members. If you are interested in supporting the HCA, whether it’s as a one-off steward for a particular event or as a regular member we would love to hear from you! 18 To advertise call 350398

Coffee time at Queen’s Park SIXTH Form students at Queen’s Park High School are benefiting from significant investment from Edsential in a new state-of-the-art coffee shop.. From flat whites to mochas, speciality teas to hot chocolate, ‘The Beach’ Coffee Shop is bringing a taste of the high street to the Sixth Form Centre. ‘The Beach’ was officially opened by assistant headteacher and director of sixth form, Clare Scanlon. Ian McGrady, Edsential’s managing director, said “We were set up to help improve outcomes for young people and ‘The Beach’ is a great example of how we can help an innovative school.” “By creating a retail society that allows Sixth Formers to get involved in running the business, we are providing real life skills and experience that will give them an edge when it comes to starting their careers.” “As a community interest company we were able to take a risk and invest in the café, knowing that the benefits we will achieve can be measured in more than just financial terms. We look forward to seeing The Beach flourish both as a business and by inspiring Queen’s Park High School’s Sixth Formers to become our future entrepreneurs.” The coffee shop is open for students every day between 8am and 2pm, Monday to Friday, serving breakfast and lunch, offering a wide range of hot and cold food, including bacon baps, croissants and the odd cake or two! This new innovation is proving very popular with both staff and students, there is a definite ‘thumbs up’ as the student’s tuck into their hot drinks and snacks each day. Miss Scanlon said: “This is an exciting venture both as a new facility for our students and the opportunities afforded to those involved in the Retail Society to develop their understanding of how the business works. The students (and staff) have embraced it with open arms and we look forward to the development of the outside area in the spring term.” 22 To advertise call 350398

e new wrinkle Last summer Vogue Magazine highlighted the décolletage as “the new wrinkle”.

I am sure you have noticed women with beautiful facial and neck skin looking stunning in a an evening dress until they lean forward and then oh dear there is a wrinkly, crinkly and aged décolletage. We all remember that we were told to moisturise below the jawline otherwise we will have an aged neck. Now we must go the further mile and include our décolletage! The décolletage is prone to sun damage as the skin layers are fairly thin and after the face, neck and hands it suffers from the most sun damage. We protect our face and neck with sun screen but overlook protecting our décolletage. Celebrities such as Cindy Crawford, Gwynedd Paltrow and Victoria Beckham have been vocal about paying special attention to the décolletage. Besides the aforementioned wrinkles and crinkles the décolletage skin may have areas of pigmented spots, red broken veins, spider naevus and red Campbell de Morgan spots. The best TLC is to include your décolletage with your daily moisturising and sun protection. When you apply your once or twice weekly face and neck mask don’t forget to include your décolletage. Winter is the perfect time for laser treatments to the area. Start with Skin Rejuvenation to reduce the pigmentation. The laser beam emitted during the treatment will also reduce small thread veins. Any remaining larger red veins, spider naevus or Campbell de Morgan spots can then be targeted and treated with laser specifically for red veins. Skin Rejuvenation also helps to regenerate collagen, so plumping out the skin to make it appear more youthful. Skin

Rejuvenation also helps reduce any acne spots in the area. LED Lightfusion is another form of Skin Rejuvenation. It is a relaxing and perfect treatment for this area and combines the power of proven wavelengths of red light to stimulate collagen, improve laxity, making the skin more supple, and reduce pigmentation. It also helps cells to detoxify and operate more efficiently by literally energising the cell. As it reduces inflammation it is excellent for acne outbreaks. During the treatment a Hydrogel Mask is placed on the area delivering key ingredients of seaweed, plant extracts and marine collagen. Town council for Chester? There is some interest in the idea of Chester having a Town Council, writes Handbridge man Reg Barritt. I have been asked by others to take up the issue to see if the idea has enough support to take the proposal further. I therefore invite any reader who shares this interest to make themselves and their contact details known me with a view to arranging an initial informal meeting about the possibility of having a Chester Town Council. It is argued that a Town Council for the unparished wards of Chester would take the load off CWAC ‘s elected members who have bigger issues to manage leaving this new body to deal effectively with more local issues. Chester’s unparished wards include Blacon (pop. 13,600), Boughton (5,600), City (4,000), Garden Quarter (5,700), Handbridge Parks (8,900), Hoole (9,000), Newton (9,800), and Lache Park (5,800). It should not be forgotten that CWAC is currently undertaking its own Governance Review that will feed back findings to the Governance Review Committee. This Chester Town Council proposal has also been raised with that review. Any action on this the Chester community wish to take does need to be coordinated with that review in respect of and for our elected council. CWAC also has a District Advisory Panel (details of meetings and membership can be found on the CWAC website committees section) made up of councillors for Chester that meets regularly. That body will have an obvious interest in this matter. I have taken the liberty of already writing to the DAP secretary highlighting this proposal; and this invitation does extend to these Chester Councillors as well as generally to any neighbours across the city who at least provisionally favour this idea. If there is enough interest I will arrange a time and place to be announced for a meeting. Contact in writing at: 99 Hartington Street, Chester CH4 7BP

A 1929 photograph of the frozen River Dee

A brief history of Chester’s climate A former school geography teacher who is now better known for his sci-fi novels has published a new book looking at Chester’s climate. Geoff Nelder’s book looks at the extremes of temperature and rain which the city has experienced over the years, including the time when the River Dee was frozen over. Chester’s Climate: past and present is a 40 page booklet which was first published in 1985 when Geoff was teaching at Queen’s Park High School. The original book sold out in the same year but the new edition has updates on temperature and air pollution trends. Currently it is sold as an ebook readable on your computers, tablets, Kindles, smartphones etc but a paper version will be out soon. In this book are answers to: Did the mid 20thCentury have the best summers? Are we due for the storm of centuries? How often has the River Dee frozen over? How is the Chester climate suitable for farming? Did you know that local weather in Chester: Uprooted trees in the city centre? Made the city walls fall down? Made a church kill a child? Made a man eat his wife then is eaten himself? Had colder winters than 1947 and1963? Had tornadoes and hurricanes? Has its own cloud formations? The price is (£1.62) via paypal from Product link for Chester’s Climate https://payhip.com/b/62pM

What is the X Factor in Divorce and Separation? The answer is quite simple - you need to speak with someone who is: l Friendly and Easily Approachable l Who understands, from experience, l Who has considerable experience what you are going through l Who allows you time to talk and helps l Whose charges could be much lower than you through your problems that of a Big City Firm l Who doesn’t judge you That person is Carol McGuire, a Solicitor and Partner in Thomas Andrews & Partners, 31 High Street Wrexham. Please just take two minutes to read what she has to say : “I have specialised in Family Law for over 30 years. Hence I have considerable experience to handle any problems that a client may have. “I understand that it is an emotional time for you and that you need to take things slowly, to enable you to cope with what has happened. I believe in giving you whatever time you need to discuss the issues. “However, my motto is “Knowledge is Power” and as such, the earlier you obtain that, the better. “It’s not just the decision of whether or not to commence proceedings but to find out the financial implications and more importantly the effect it may have upon your children. “It’s a very stressful period in your life and you need to alleviate some of that by finding out your entitlements in law .” So please telephone 01978291506 for a free 30 minute initial appointment

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

COLOUR in the Cold FEBRUARY holds the promise of spring in often in cold and frozen conditions so plants have to be tough to flower. February is known as the snowdrop season so try and take time out to visit local woodland or some of the gardens with drifts of snowdrops and other early flowering bulbs. Rode Hall in Cheshire has snowdrop walks from 4th February to 5th March, Dunham Massey has a large winter garden with snowdrops and is open daily then there is Chirk Castle with the display of drifts of snowdrops in the woodland. Other bulbs to look out for are the tiny Scilla or Chionodoxa with their dark to light blue star shaped flowers. They would do well planted with snowdrops and the winter aconite Eranthis hyemalis with their rich buttercup yellow flowers. Dunham Massey gardens plant drifts of the bulbs mentioned above and add the short Iris reticulata varieties. The blue Chionodoxa with the Iris Katharine Hodgkin peeping over the dead leaves makes a lovely show for early spring. In addition there are some shrubs that have scented flowers. The small spidery flowers of Witch hazel or Hamamellis come in a number of different varieties. Some are scented and I would recommend Hamamelis x intermedia Vesna with pale orange flowers. Another classic scented shrub is Daphne mezereum which needs some shelter and does well on any soil but heavy clay soil. The shrub will grow to 1.5 m tall, is evergreen and has heavily scented pink flowers from February onwards. Lastly the winter honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima smells like summer honeysuckle but the flowers are small. This shrub also likes a bit of shelter and also dislikes heavy clay soil. The shrub doesn’t look much in summer with its twiggy stems but earns a place in any garden with winter scent. Run a summer flowering clematis through it in summer to add colour. Late February into March is the time to prune dogwood grown for their stems. If your soil is rich and the plants are growing well, you can cut the stems down to a stump about 30 cms tall and new shoots should be produced. If the plants are spindly, then give them a good feed in March and cut back stems every couple of years. Janet Heath Garden Mentor
