THERE was a nice moment at Queen’s Park High School recently when a defibrillator was handed over just months after the death of former pupil Jess Versey. The defibrillator may help save lives in the future.

Jess’s legacy lives on A NEW defibrillator has been presented to Queen’s Park High School in memory of a former pupil who tragically died. It was presented to Maisy Versey, the sister of Jess Versey, a former QPHS student, who lost her life in June. Jess’s family kindly donated money from Jess’s funeral to the Blacon Defibrillator Fund (BDF) who supplied the machine to the school in Jess’s memory. Lee Challinor, from the BDF came into school to hand over the defibrillator, which could potentially save lives of people who have suffered cardiac failure. Head teacher Lindsey Watterson said: “I would like to express my sincere thanks to Jess’s family and to Lee Challinor from the Blacon Defibrillator Fund for this donation to the school. It is lovely that something so positive can come out of such a tragedy. Jess was an inspiration to others and I am delighted that her legacy can live on here at Queen’s Park in this way. We now want to help support Lee’s fund as much as possible so that he can continue his excellent work, raising people’s awareness of such a worthwhile cause.” Boxes of delight DOZENS of boxers full of presents were collected for Operation Christmas Child. 47 Christmas boxes for boys and girls aged 2-16 around the world were taken to the Wrexham depot and a certificate and handshake of thanks and gratitude was given to Queens Park High School. A special thank you from Miss Britland Teacher of RE to 7CGE Miss Goode’s tutor group who provided 14 boxes for Westminster house and led them to becoming the overall house winners. Vivo points were given to all pupils who participated in the house competition.

S Somerville’s enter a new year in the property market, we caught up with the two owner/directors, Annie Somerville & Richard Wheeler to ask for their thoughts about what’s in store for the Chester property market over the next twelve months. With the increase in buy-tolet stamp duty due in March, Richard is predicting a busy start to the year in the investment sector, with many new and existing landlords keen to get transactions through before the March deadline, potentially saving them thousands of pounds. Richard said “We may see the price of investment properties slowing in 2016 to compensate for the increased purchase costs, but homes which could also be purchased by first time byers will remain unaffected.”
With regards to family homes, Annie feels that the steady demand for good quality homes in the 250k-400k price range will continue to support the market and is she is confident that we will see price increases over the year of between 4.5%-6.5%. She adds “Larger, more expensive homes should also see good levels of interest, but price increases tend to be more moderate with buyers concentrating on location and the quality of accommodation for a long-term home rather than cashing-in on market trends.” Overall Annie and Richard are both looking forward to the year ahead and Richard finished by commenting “We have beefed up our sales team and introduced new customer service roles over recent months as we are confident about the year ahead.”

Charity begins at school A lot of events and activities have been organised to help raise funds for Queen’s Park High School’s chosen charities. These have included a non-school uniform day for Children in Need (over £400), 6th Form Fancy Dress for CoppaFeel (over £70), Cake Bake for The Babygrow Appeal at the Countess of Chester Hospital, Coffee Morning for MacMillan Cancer (over £155), Hairdressing at the in house salon ‘Queenies’ and a 11,000ft tandem Skydive for WaterAid! The PTA have also been actively sourcing funds for The Hospice of the Good Shepherd and Babygrow Appeal by donating all car parking fees they received from the Chester Santa Dash The in December. They successfully raised over £100 for each of the charities. The skin on the backs of our hands is very thin and there is little fat. Even a small loss of collagen and the breakdown of the elastin fibres can result in wrinkles and thinning skin, which in turn allows veins to protrude. Our poor hands are subject to harsh treatment due to contact with chemicals in every day life and more often than not do not receive the care they deserve. Sun exposure and environmental damage are other reasons for ageing skin on hands. We may apply sun cream daily to our faces, but we forget to apply it to our hands or maybe even wipe the residue from our face application onto the back of the other hand, so that the applying hand misses out. Sun exposure causes premature ageing and also brown sun spots or liver spots to the backs of our hands. Prevention is the best way. Wearing protective gloves when using chemicals and doing household chores is a must. Using a daily sun screen to the backs of both hands is so important and of course regular daily use of hand and nail cream is essential. Whenever you apply a face mask apply the same mask to the backs of your hands and leave the mask on overnight. This will help improve hydration. The same applies when you exfoliate your face and body, remember to exfoliate the

backs of your hands. Our cuticles can become dry and ragged or they cling to the nail itself. It is worth investing in a good quality hand cream that doubles as a cuticle cream. Massage the hand cream into the nail at the base using gentle circular movements with your thumb pad and at the same time very carefully massaging the cuticle towards your finger. You can do this for about 30 seconds or longer on each nail. It is something you can do while watching television or reading a book or reading your emails.

QUEEN'S PARK H Sights and sounds of Roman Chester Year 8 students experienced Chester 2,000 years ago as they explored the Dewa Roman Experience. Atmospheric reconstructions, genuine archaeological remains and the journey through the Roman Deva Fortress enriched students understanding of Chester as an historical city destination. Students enjoyed the interactive room where they had the unique opportunity to dress like a Roman Soldier and explore what life was like in Roman times. Students took part in a Roman soldier patrol which provided an unforgettable experience of what it was like to be a Roman soldier. Armed with shields, they visited the Amphitheatre, Roman gardens and prepared for battle!

The books have all been nominated for the Cheshire Schools’ Book Award 2016. The group will meet once a month on a Tuesday in tutor time when they hope to have some lively discussions about the choice of a worthy winner.
Senior rowers beat the elements Queen’s Park High students battled the fearsome winds as well as the opposition when they travelled to Northwich Rowing club to compete at their head race on the River Weaver over a 2350m course. The first division was cancelled for all under 15 single scullers due to extreme winds and dangerous river conditions, As the day progressed river conditions improved and all other combinations and crews were allowed to race. 1st place wins in the WJ17 double category went to Emily Cox and Amy Williamson and the WJ16 double Rona Fishburn and Fi Weir. The WJ16 quad with Eve Finlay, Rona Fishburn, Eve Lawlor and Fi Weir achieved 2nd place against a slightly faster crew from Trentham boat club.

Distraction theft in Saltney
POLICE are appealing for information following a theft outside a supermarket in Chester. The incident took place outside Asda Supermarket on River Lane, Saltney. The victim, a local woman, had been shopping in the store and while loading her shopping into her car she was approached by a man asking for directions. While giving directions it is believed that the man distracted her and stole two credit cards, one of which was later used and a quantity of cash was stolen. The man is described as approximately 50-years-old, 5ft 5ins tall, chubby build and of eastern European origin. PC Darren Franks from Chester Local Policing Unit said: “I’d like to ask anyone who was in the area at the time of this incident and believes that they may have any information to come forward to help with our investigation.” Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 1033 of 27th November.

Snowflakes, soldiers and sugar plum fairies Children at St Mary’s Community School enjoyed a dance lesson from Cheshire Dance. The children have been listening to different versions of the traditional Christmas story of The Nutcracker and have had fun dressing up as the different characters, acting out some parts of the story in play. They also watched The Nutcracker ballet by Tchaikovsky. Lauren the dance teacher showed the children how to re-enact the story through movement and they danced as snowflakes, soldiers, sugar plum fairies and mice. They are pictured pretending to be Clara who, after being fast asleep, is just waking up to the a sound of marching and scuffling coming from downstairs where she left her precious nutcracker.

Winter treasures
JANUARY is difficult for colour in the garden. For inspiration I would visit Ness Botanic Gardens on the Wirral or Dunham Massey Gardens near Altrincham and enjoy the wide variety of colour and interest from flowers, foliage and bark. In mild periods in January the winter heather Erica carnea varieties, will give colour from pink and white flowers. When a few varieties are grown together on a sloping bank, they look spectacular. Although they like a well drained acid soil in sun, they will tolerate slightly alkaline soils. Bark is one of the main delights in winter. I love the red and yellow stems of Cornus or dogwood which contrast well against the dull grey brown of deciduous shrubs. If you have plenty of space and can position it well away from houses, a silver birch, Betula jacquemontii with white bark looks lovely in winter. Plant around it with the red stemmed Cornus alba Eligantissima and yellow to orange stemmed Cornus sanguinea Winter Beauty. Then scatter around clumps of snowdrops, crocuses and early small daffodils for a wonderful winter show from December to March. Lastly, my choice of winter flowers is dominated by the magnificent Hellebore orientalis varieties. These robust plants with leathery leaves (which I cut off in November so you can see the flowers) will flower throughout winter with a show of white, pink and plum purple colours. They will grow in sun and light shade and are good for heavy clay soils but also cope with dry shade and well drained soils. Just leave them in position for a few years and the plant will clump up. They also seed well and you will often find tiny plants growing around the base which you can grow on and spread around the garden. Do beware that the sap from the plant will cause severe vomiting so always wear gloves when handling the plant and wash your hands afterwards. It is best not to grow them if children are around. Work to do in the garden? Finish pruning shrubs and start pruning apples and pear trees. Mulch the soil with organic matter such as compost from your compost bins, well rotted manure or get bags of soil improver from the recycling centre. Put a layer 3 to 4cms deep over any bare soil and the worms will gradually take it down for you

CURZON PARK ARRESTS During my last update I reported a slight increase in burglary and theft from motor vehicle offences around Handbridge Park. On 19th November a male was arrested and charged for a theft from motor vehicle offence committed in Curzon Park on the 14th November. The male who is a prolific offender was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment when attending court on 20th November. Also on the 25th November three males were arrested for an attempted burglary in Curzon Park on 22nd November. The three males have been charged with conspiracy to commit burglary and have been remanded to attend Court during December. I am hopeful that taking these individuals of our streets will result in less crime happening
around Overleigh during this festive period. Home CCTV was vital in helping us identify the suspects in both of the above crimes in Curzon Park and I encourage residents to consider installing CCTV at their properties as both a crime preventative measure and a way of potentially helping ourselves identify those responsible for a crime that occurs at your home. I am still producing weekly Handbridge Park Crime Updates sent out via Cheshire Police Alerts which tell residents what thefts, criminal damages and burglaries have been committed around their local area. I strongly encourage residents to sign up to Cheshire Police Alerts. Just type Cheshire Police Alert into google and fill in the registration form.
