HERONBRIDGE is a lovely spot between Eaton Road and the River Dee - but did you know that it harbours a bloody history? An exhibition of excavations at the site has revealed that it wasn’t quite the peaceful area that it is now. In this month’s edition we’ve got Queen’s Park High School news, a brutal crime carried out by a Saltney teen, the mystery of a wartime nurse at Eaton Hall, Bruce Edge’s butcher’s blog and much more. HANDBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB Our summer programme began in May, when a coach outing to Shugborough Hall near Stafford replaced our usual meeting. We had a glorious day on which to explore the “Upstairs and Downstairs” of the Hall, including a fascinating exhibition of Lord Lichfield’s celebrity photographs. Later in the month we had a very enjoyable beginners’ workshop. In June, Nigel Whyles from Telford entertained us with his demonstration “The Magic of Music”, and we also held a members’ competition with the rather fitting title “Summer Harmony”. Our first event in July will be our famous “Strawberry Tea” which has been held for the last few years in the garden of member Pat Wynne and her husband David at Mancot. In addition to a scrumptious tea, there will be stalls selling cakes and plants, a bring and buy stall and a fantastic raffle to end the afternoon, and a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Non-members are welcome and lifts arranged for those without transport. This event is on 10th July and tickets cost £6. The following week we have a visit from Jane Pugh, an area demonstrator whose floral demonstration invites us to “Dance the Night Away”. This will be the last event of the summer as we do not have a meeting in August. Our meetings take place on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 1.45pm in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Handbridge. After the demonstration, the arrangements are raffled, then we have a chance to chat over tea and biscuits. There is also a bring and buy stall, greetings cards and flower requisites stall and a magazine swap to browse. Visitors are welcome to join us (Tickets £5). For further information phone Chester 683715 or 300599.

Saltney teen jailed after City Walls stabbing A Saltney teenager has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars after he stabbed another man on the city walls in Chester. Floyd Evans was handed the sentence at Chester Crown Court in May. The 19-year-old, of Saltney Street, stabbed the victim in the chest in October last year, in what was believed to be a homophobic attack. The victim - Francisco Nascimento, aged 35 - was left battling for his life after the knife pierced his heart and cut an artery. A police officer helped to apply pressure to his wound before paramedics arrived at the scene and he was taken to a specialist trauma unit at the Royal Liverpool Hospital where medics performed a life-saving procedure. He remained in hospital for 11 days - four of those in intensive care. During the trial, the victim stated that, while the physical injuries had now healed, the mental trauma he has suffered is significant and will be long lasting. Following the sentencing he said: “I hope that Floyd Evans realises that he could have been facing a murder charge had it not been for the lifesaving skills of the

Guilty: Floyd Evans police, paramedics and surgeons. I thank God and the amazing people who saved my life. I will never forget the incident and will always have the scars, but I am also very grateful to still be alive.” On the night of the incident the victim had visited Tesco on Frodsham Street and walked to the city walls where he bumped into a friend. They stopped and chatted to one another for a while and it was at this point that Evans, who had admitted drinking alcohol and taking drugs prior to the attack, turned up, walked past the pair and walked down the stairs on the walls - a spot that is known to be a meeting place for the gay community. He stopped for a few minutes before turning

round and walking back up the steps to where the pair were standing. The victim thought Evans was about to walk away again when he felt a pain in his chest and realised he had been stabbed. The victim was then taken to the Royal Liverpool Hospital where medics battled to save his life. During sentencing the judge formally recognised the efforts of the first officer at the scene – PC Keith Campbell. He applied pressure to the chest while waiting for paramedics to arrive. The judge has awarded him a commendation to mark his efforts. Detective Inspector Helen Spooner, who led the investigation, said: “The victim almost died as a result of the actions of Floyd Evans that night in the city centre. This was an unprovoked and violent attack on a man not known to him, which left him fighting for his life. “The experience has been traumatic enough for the victim − but he was then made to re-live what happened when Evans pleaded not guilty and the case ended up at trial.”

Discover the bloody his The violent history of an Anglo Saxon battle as well as an in depth study of a Roman settlement are included in the latest major exhibition at Chester’s Grosvenor Museum. The archaeological site at Heronbridge was discovered in 1929, half way between Handbridge and Eccleston, between Eaton Road and the River Dee. A major new exhibition explores the excavations at the site and the secrets they have revealed in ‘Buildings, Battles and Bodies: A History of Heronbridge’ which runs until November. The earliest evidence from Heronbridge is a Roman settlement established about AD 90. Rectangular buildings were laid out along Roman Watling Street which connected Chester to Whitchurch, Wroxeter and London. This settlement was rebuilt in the early 2nd century with new stone buildings laid out in blocks of three. These ‘strip-buildings’ are associated with commercial activity and would have functioned as a shop, workshop and living quarters. A natural inlet of the River Dee was also turned into a quay. Displayed within the exhibition are a large number of Roman objects excavated on the site, including tombstones and an altar. A model of the Roman settlement has been

created by students from Eccleston Primary School. Archaeologists working at Heronbridge also found evidence of a later fort with a rampart and ditch and mass grave of battle casualties dated to the Anglo-Saxon period. In c.616 AEthelfrith of Northumbria, an AngloSaxon kingdom to the east, marched on the British kingdoms to the west. The two armies met and fought in a bloody battle, known as the ‘Battle of Chester’. The exhibition explores the evidence from Heronbridge which links the fort and mass grave to this 7th century battle. Visitors can come face to face with the skeletons of some the Anglo-Saxon warriors who fought and died on the site, and learn more about the battle. Doddleston and Huntington councillor Mark Williams, whose ward includes Heronbridge said: “I am sure that this major exhibition will be of great interest to lovers of local history, both young and old. “Heronbridge is an extremely important location and fills in many gaps in Chester’s long and illustrious history, including a major battle in Anglo Saxon times, as well as the role it played during the earlier Roman occupation. “Different aspects and events will appeal to a wide range of people including the exhibits, short films and list of lectures”. Included in the exhibition are two films produced by Year 8 students from Queen’s Park High School. They worked with staff from the Grosvenor Museum to look at the evidence from the Battle of Chester and its links to Heronbridge. Matt Yeoman, Director of Learning, Visual and Performing Arts at the school said ‘Providing context to the learning of our students is something we always strive to achieve, and working with the Grosvenor Museum has provided us the opportunity to extend student

A BUTCHER’S BLOG with Bruce Edge, from Ernest W.Edge & Son Butchers, Handbridge

MEAT TO GO

On a regular basis the media reminds me of the vast distances that meat can travel to get from field to plate. Supermarket chicken from Brazil and Thailand, Parma Ham from Italy, Chorizo from Spain and Guinea Fowl from France are but a few.

We of course source our meat locally from Cheshire and Welsh farms but it gave me the idea to make this months blog about how far Edges meat has travelled from our shop to various parts of the world with our customers. During my 21 years working at the shop the following travel stories stick in my mind.

The first I recall was about 20 years ago and the customer, the boss of a large business on the Wrexham Industrial Estate, had a particular penchant for our pork and tomato sausages. He was Swedish and each time he had time off to go home to his family in Sweden, he used to arrange to take 10Ib of our sausages on the plane with him.

The last time we saw him he had been transferred to run a plant in Argentina and arranged to take 20Ib with him! Continuing with the sausage theme, in 1997 my brother was working in Hong Kong and arranged to have a “bangers and mash party” for all his expatriate friends to coincide with the last night of the proms as Hong Kong was formally handed back to the Chinese. My father realising both the significance of this moment in history and the chance of a holiday and great party duly offered to deliver the sausages personally, bless him! Nearer home we even provided a full Christmas Turkey dinner to Syria, in happier times, to a customer who had moved out there with work. Bacon, sausages, a ham joint and Turkey which apparently went down very well and made Christmas abroad a little bit more bearable for someone missing home.

Generally the meat we prepare for customers to take on holiday is to places like France and Spain. Although we once sent a large order of bacon and sausages to Munich, to a customer who had moved out there and did not care for the local produce. One of our customers currently works in West Africa and approximately every 6 weeks returns to the UK and restocks with a large meat order to take back with him. Available locally to him is a selection of “bush meat” which could turn out to be monkey or anything else that happens to wander across a hunters path! As a result, not surprisingly, he takes his meat with him!

Of course, if you are planning on transporting meat abroad it is worth checking with your airline or it could potentially be seized at customs.

Next month I will be including a recipe to get your taste buds going.

Students get the chance to quiz ska

Bookworms A NUMBER of students in Year 7, 8 and 9 have now been on the Accelerated Reader scheme for over a term and during an assembly in May, rewards and prizes for participation, progress and effort were awarded. The scheme works by assessing students’ current reading level and then matching their reading books to ensure they are best suited to make as much progress as possible.

kateboard champ Year 7 students were chosen to take part in a cross curricular project between PE and English. The students began the morning by looking at examples of press conferences and planning questions that they would later put to Neil Danns, the former British Skateboarding champion. Later, when the students were fully prepared, they were able to put their questions to the star and try their hands and sports journalism in the Green Room. Students then wrote up their articles using their notes, their online research and their article plans. The students produced some fantastic work and it is currently being displayed in the English Faculty area.

Some fantastic achievements have been made with some students adding more than 15 months to their reading ages in just a few short weeks. Over 70 certificates and small prizes were awarded to students who have gained 100% in their reading quizzes, the awards for most progress made were given to Max Harvey(1st Place), Alex Binns (2nd place) and Florence Pitt-Knowles

(3rd place). The tutor group awarded for most participation was 7KDN and the Star Prize winners in Year 7 and Year 8, each winning their very own Kindle to further their reading progress and participation, were Esme Pugh and Cameron Neill. Well done to them all! We look forward to awarding more prizes at the end of the summer term.

Sixth formers aim to turn rags to riches The Sixth Form Committee, led by Jack Salmon and Daniella Hyatt, have raised a fantastic ÂŁ112 from the Rag Bag collection that took place earlier this year. A huge thank you to all our families and staff that supported them in donating unwanted clothes. The funds will be put towards the refurbishment of the sixth form centre that took place earlier this year. You can still help raise funds and recycle your old clothes by putting them in the Rag Bag recycling bin which is situated on the East End car park.

Mystery of war nurse at Eaton Hall Archivists are seeking the identity of a First World War nurse who compiled a moving pictorial record of the days when the 1st Duke of Westminster’s palatial mansion served as a hospital for wounded troops. An album of 300-plus photographs depicting nurses and their patients amid the huge Gothic splendour of Eaton’s Waterhouse Hall, was acquired by archivists in 1979. It shows Eaton’s cavernous drawing and dining rooms – still hung with fine paintings – transformed into wards for injured servicemen – many of whom had lost limbs in the conflict. As his home doubled as a hospital, the 2nd Duke, known as Bend’Or, was pursuing a military career with the Cheshire Yeomanry in Egypt.

While several of the album pictures – dating from 191417- show its creator in her nursing uniform, many are captioned simply with the word ‘Self’. “The album is a wonderfully evocative record of times when the country stood together to face the horrific results of the greatest conflict the world has ever known,” said archivist Liz Green. “While many of the soldiers and fellow nurses are named, it gives no clues to ‘Self’s’ identity – apart from one associated shot of her in a garden at Churton, which may or may not be her home. “We are hoping that her photograph will be recognised by descendants who will be able to provide information to bring added meaning to the album she so painstakingly created.”

Unidentified nurse The Eaton war hospital album will play an important part in the ongoing exhibitions held by Cheshire Record Office to commemorate the centenary of the Great War. It can also be seen at the Chester Library Poetry workshop on Thursday 5 June. Anyone who believes they may be able to help with ‘Self’s’ identity should contact the Cheshire Record Office on 01244 972574 or at http://archives.cheshire. gov.uk

with Bernard Dennis

Dodleston’s Bernard Dennis has spent over 30 years travelling the world on business to the Middle East, Far East, North Africa, South America and Europe.

Crimea, the Ukraine and Russia are all very much in our minds as the fate of Ukraine unfolds before our eyes through the various forms of the media. For many the Crimea is etched in historical recollections as the first war engaged by British troops since the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Ironically, Britain and France joined forces and went to war against Russia to support Turkey in 1854. The British and French armies were sent through the Dardanelles and into the Black Sea region. The Russian Black Sea fleet had earlier been defeated by Allied warships and this paved the way for British and French troops to land unchallenged anywhere on the Russian coast. Balaclava, on the Crimean Peninsula was chosen as a convenient port from which to disembark troops and from where to launch an attack on the fortress of Sebastopol. However, in planning such an operation one factor had not really been given any due consideration, and that was winter! There were no good roads from the supply point of Balaclava to the forward ‘front’ and after a very short while, the supply wagons of the Allied troops where up to the axles in mud. Progress against the Russians was virtually at a standstill. The troops were demoralised, hungry and poorly clad. Their uniforms and equipment were not designed for the harsh conditions being encountered. William Howard Russell the war correspondent of The Times newspaper was sending regular reports to his office in London describing the extremely poor and grim conditions of the British troops and this provoked major criticism

of government policies in London. Being aware of these problems, Sir Samuel Morton Peto, M.P. for Norwich at the time, suggested to Parliament that as he was a partner in a railway building company, he, together with his brother-in-law Edward Betts and Thomas Brassey would build a railway from Balaclava to the fighting lines, an eventual distance of thirty-nine miles. Furthermore, this would all be done purely at cost to the government without any contract or personal advantage. They promised to have a railroad at work in three weeks after landing at Balaclava. The offer was accepted and the contractors began to obtain supplies,

This month he writes about Chester’s connection with the Crimea, currently the disputed territory in Ukraine. sent out to undertake this massive project were better equipped than the British troops. Records show they lived in heated wooden huts built alongside the track whereas British troops had to put up with thin bell tents in the depths of a Russian winter! At any one time in his railway building career, Thomas Brassey employed between 70 – 80,000 men. By 1847 he had built one mile out of every three in Britain; by 1850 it was three miles out of four in France and by the year of his death in 1870, he could claim credit for a large portion of the world’s total mileage of railway construction. Building a stretch of railway in Crimea was, to Brassey, just another job and within six weeks of starting, 20 miles of double track had been laid. By the end of the siege in February 1856 thirty nine miles of track had been completed enabling the British troops to be supplied with huge quantities of guns, ammunition and essential supplies. to purchase or hire ships, and to recruit the men, who included specialists and navvies. The fleet set sail on 21st December 1854 and arrived at the beginning of February 1855. Whilst Thomas Brassey and Edward Betts were responsible for the whole logistical operation of mobilising equipment, supplies, food, surgeons, nurses and men for this enormous undertaking, the man in charge ‘on site’ was James Beattie. He was a trusted and experienced engineer who had previously worked on many of the overseas projects for the company. An incredible fact is that the ‘army’ of navvies

Thomas Brassey and his partners never sought any formal recognition for their part in the victory at Crimea but it is recorded that the army and government were profoundly grateful for their efforts. The navvies, upon their return became national heroes. Brassey was a Cheshire lad, born in 1805 near Buerton he went on to achieve the accolade of ‘The Greatest Railway Builder in the World’’. There is a plaque to him on Chester Railway Station and St Erasmus Chapel, Chester Cathedral has a bust to commemorate his life and works. The Chapel was restored by his children, at their cost, as a memorial to their father.
