Olympian opens school’s floodlit hockey pitch OLYMPIC hockey star Sam Quek was the special guest at the official opening of the new all-weather floodlit hockey pitch at the Catholic High School. Sam cut the ribbon and described what it takes to be a gold medallist to the year 9 students and, to the surprise of GCSE and A Level students, putting them through their paces in a PE lesson. She described the pitch as a fantastic facility and hoped it would inspire future Olympians to follow in her footsteps. John Murray, headteacher, said: “To have Sam spend most of the day here at school will no doubt leave a lasting impression on many of our students. Sam is a great example of what hard work and commitment can achieve.” The pitch is also available for hire for the coming season together with changing facilities and parking. Handbridge Flower Club
The club usually meets on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 1.45pm in St Mary’s Parish Hall. However, our May meeting was a very special occasion, being our Silver Anniversary, which we celebrated with a delicious afternoon tea at Chester Golf Club. Entertainment was provided by clarinettist Eric “Busker” Newton who, after a fascinating and amusing talk about his unconventional life, delighted us during tea with a toe-tapping selection of jazz and “golden oldies.” Our June demonstrator was Anne Russell from Middlewich who chose the intriguing title “From Dogs to Dogwood.” We also had a members’ competition with the theme “Here Comes Summer!” This month our meeting is on Thursday, 20th July when Denise Hubbard, from Sandbach will give us a demonstration with the theme “Travellers’ Tails” - more dogs? Visitors are welcome (admission £5). We have no meeting in August but please watch out for details of future venues, as we will have to adapt owing to the building of the new Community Centre which we hope will start in the near future.

ON THE BEAT with Police Community Support Officer Lauren Davies
Thefts from unlocked cars I am sure it seems strange for you not to be receiving a crime update not from PCSO Chris Fox. So firstly I would like to introduce myself. I will be your new PCSO and will cover Handbridge, Westminster Park & Curzon Park. I have been in the job for over two years and plan to take directly over from Chris, meaning you should notice very little change. During the last month or so there have been a number of thefts from motor vehicles in my beat as a whole. Some in Westminster park, some in Handbridge and some in Curzon Park. All of those vehicles that were broken into were insecure. None of the above incidents occurred with entry being forced to the vehicles. Someone has also been arrested and charged with a number of these offences and will be dealt with by the courts in due course. As the summer creeps upon us it is massively important that we keep all of our doors, vehicles and outbuildings secure. It seems to sometimes be forgotten in the summer when we have Westcriminal. & Chester Council windows open in cars etc. If these are left open overnight it can invite anyCheshire opportunist

BE SAFE IN THE SUN SUNBURN is never pleasant to experience. It so often catches us out when we least expect it. The best remedy is to apply suncream every day no matter what the weather and all year round on our face and neck. These areas are the most likely to be exposed to the elements. Children should be protected before going to school every morning from April until the middle of October. Many children do not like sun cream application. Brush on Block is perfect to apply to children as it is a powder that is literally brushed on without any fuss. It is non-sticky, non-greasy and is an instant sun block of SPF30. It was developed by international make-up artist Susan Posnick to encourage everyone to wear invisible yet
effective sun protection daily. There is now a bronze version too to give a light natural bronzed glow. A number of medications can make the skin sun sensitive. Antibiotics belonging to the Tetracycline family, often prescribed for acne and urine infections, can make the skin very sun sensitive and likely to burn severely. Be aware that these antibiotics will affect the whole body. Ibuprofen and St. John’s Wort also cause the skin to be sun sensitive. If you are in any doubt about any medication do Google and ask if the medication is subject to sun sensitivity. If you have the misfortune to be sunburnt do cool the area quickly and apply 100% Aloe Vera for a few days after to help prevent

Handbridge councillor is city’s new Lord Mayor The new Lord Mayor of Chester will champion community spirit during her year in office as well as raise money for her chosen charities. Councillor Razia Daniels took up the Lord Mayor of Chester’s chain of office in a ceremony at Chester Town Hall. Cllr Daniels said: “I am truly delighted to be chosen as Lord Mayor. This is such an honour and privilege for me. “Chester residents are proud of where they live, and as their Lord Mayor, my aim is to promote the city, its people and everything it has to offer including the newly opened cultural centre, Storyhouse.” She added: “I’m looking forward to meeting people from all walks of life and helping to celebrate and support the many unsung heroes who run charities and undertake voluntary work across the city.” Cllr Daniels chosen charities for the next 12 months reflect her passion for equality and diversity and include – DIAL West Cheshire, The UNITY Centre (CHAWREC) and St Mary’s Handbridge Centre. Cllr Daniel’s husband, Stephen, will be her consort. Elected in 2006, Cllr Daniels has more than 11 years’ experience as a councillor. She is ward member for Handbridge Park, which includes Handbridge, Westminster Park and Curzon Park. The new Sheriff of Chester, an office that dates back to 1121, is Lache councillor Jane Mercer. School hosts first arts festival Queen’s Park High School will be hosting the first Arts Festival in collaboration with Dee Schools Partnership and Edsential on 12th and 13th July. The schools which include, Queen’s Park High, Christleton High, Chester Catholic High, Belgrave, Lache, St Clare’s, Dodleston, Eccleston, Overleigh St Mary’s, St Werburgh’s & St Columba’s & St Mary’s Community Nursery have been working together since the beginning of the year on a joint project to raise children’s aspirations and achievement in the Creative and Performing Arts. The festival entitled ‘Without the Walls’, will be held over two days and is the culmination of work created during weeks of collaborative masterclasses and workshops between the schools. It will be an exciting and inspirational showcase featuring an exhibition of art & design work, together with stunning performances of dance, drama, music & poetry. l Students have been busy leading a series of art, music and drama workshops for local primary schools. Children from Overleigh St Mary’s and St Clare’s Primary Schools had their portraits taken and merged their faces with the buildings and architecture of Chester to create an individual and personal response to the city in which they live. Year 10 photography students, Bethan Curtis, Lauren Taylor, Joe Crompton, Jonah Farrow, Charlie Waters and Dan Kefford demonstrated their Photoshop prowess by helping with the creative masterpieces. Pupils from Lache Primary School created a piece of drama looking at the plight of refugees from Syria and how not all of them managed to survive the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean Sea. The Lache children also took part in a music workshop with the ambitious task of planning and writing a song within a two-hour session. There was a ceramic workshop with Belgrave Primary School, a textile workshop with St Werburgh’s and a printmaking workshop with Eccleston pupils. The work created will be on display in the ‘Without the Walls’ exhibition as part of the Arts Festival on Wednesday 12th July from 6 - 7.30pm. All the performances will be shown in front of a live audience during the Arts Festival at Queen’s Park High School on 12th and 13th July. Visitors are welcome.

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
HIGH SUMMER IN JULY There are so many flowering plants out in July that I am spoilt for choice. One that you may not know is a shrub, Abutilon Kentish Belle. This is a tender shrub growing to about 2m tall and as you can see from the photo, has hanging red and yellow flowers loved by bees. So if you have a sheltered corner that gets sun in summer on well drained yet moist soil then try it out. It is hardier than other Abutilons and would do well on the Wirral where winter temperatures are lower. Another supposedly tender plant is Agapanthus with round heads of white or blue flowers. These are hardy in my clay based soil in full sun in Chester. You can grow them in pots and bring them in over winter. They do well with low growing perennials around the base. If you have dryer soil and sun then why not try Verbena bonariensis and Eryngium bourgatii or Sea Holly. The silvery blue stems of the Sea Holly look great with the taller stems of the Verbena and both are loved by insects. Surround with low growing geraniums or purple leaved Heucheras.
Another tall perennial is Campanula lactiflora Alba with stems of white flowers up to 1.2m tall. Good for the back of the border in moist soil but not in a windy position. Plant autumn flowering bulbs such as Nerine bowdenii or Amaryillis belladonna in sunny sandy soil or in pots for autumn colour. If your geraniums have flowered, take the shears to them and cut back hard, some varieties will flower again. Prune plums and cherries after fruiting has finished, not in winter. Make sure you water vegetables like beans and courgettes for a good crop. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. The Rowans at Malpas is open on 1st and 2nd July. It has an Italianate theme and is divided into different areas from quiet pool to exuberant pots planted with annuals. Also open on 15th and 16th July is Sunnyside Farm, Little Budworth. Five acres of country garden with wildflower meadow, pool, herbaceous borders and woodland to enjoy.

A matter of life and death Philosophy and ethics students enjoyed an innovative and interactive lesson via Skype with Dr David Webster, the head of humanities and religious studies at Gloucester University. The published author and head of innovative learning at the university gave a question and answer session to students via Skype regarding the question of ‘life after death’ - this year’s synopsis exam question. The students spent a rewarding hour posing questions with Dr Webster that discussed Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity.

Make a date for dragon boat race Queen’s Park High School staff and parents will face off on Friday 7th July for the second annual dragon boat race and summer BBQ. The parents will be looking for revenge after the teachers won the inaugural match last year. If you want to witness the spectacle it starts at the QPHS Boat House next to the River Dee (meadows side) from 5.30pm to cheer your favourite team on and be part of the celebrations.
Handbridge clean up Students teamed up with the Handbridge Community Assocation (HCA) to carry out a litter pick in the area. Year 8 students Joe Bamberand Rory Jones said: “Despite our first impressions of what a litter pick would mean, we both decided to volunteer and our experience was actually much more enjoyable that we had imagined. We want our work with the Handbridge Community Association to highlight that we, as students, care about our community and are keen to support and link up for projects.”

Pioneering loyalty scheme to be extended to more venues
After a successful six-month trial involving 20 local retailers, the Love Hoole scheme is set to be extended to include more venues. Designed with community in mind the scheme encourages people to shop locally in Hoole to improve footfall and generate loyal customers by offering instant vouchers, which can be spent in the store of issue. Shoppers can pick up a Loyalty Card at any participating business and register it on the in-store tablet or on the Love Hoole website. Tablets also act as a marketing tool that displays promotional messages and general information about events in Hoole. The Trial scheme has been popular with local people, with over 2000 cards issued, and purchases made with the card totalling nearly a quarter of a million pounds. Rob Meakin, Technical Director at locally based Loyalty Pro who administer the scheme, said: “The beauty of the Love Hoole scheme is that customers only need one loyalty card for lots of different shops, which is much more convenient. We needed a trial as this is a new concept in community schemes with industry leading technology. We now plan to offer it to all the other businesses in the area, including sole traders and mobile businesses who can operate the scheme via their own smartphone.” “The scheme includes the ability for traders to offer their customers rewards based on spend by contacting them via email, text, or instant messaging”. Our aim is to give the local trader community the marketing tools that are only normally available to the big supermarkets to help them compete and ensure the area stays vibrant.” The extended roll out gives shoppers the option to download an app and use their smartphone instead of the physical card, and to donate their points to community causes via the website.Loyalty Pro have launched a media and radio campaign on Dee 106.3 to promote the scheme and encourage people from other parts of the area to sign up and shop in Hoole. Any local trader interested in being involved can call 01244 526010 for more information or visit our website www.lovehoole.com l Pictured: Rob Meakin, from Loyalty Pro
