New £1.5m centre now St Mary’s Handbridge Centre was officially opened on 10th June by the Rt Rev Dr Peter Forster, the Bishop of Chester. Over 200 people attended the ceremony, including Chris Matheson MP, Councillor Razia Daniels, Rupert Collis the Estate’s Manager from Eaton Estate, and representatives from a wide number of individuals and charitable organisations who have made donations to the building of the Centre. Also present were those who have been closely associated with the development and building of the Centre. The new facility which replaces the old church hall, is over twice the size of the former building, and will serve as the long-awaited community facility for Handbridge and the wider Chester area. St Mary’s is extremely grateful to all those organisations and individuals who have contributed to fundraising, and to those who have worked tirelessly over the past three years to see this project become a reality. Karate master Mike promoted to 7th Dan Sensei Mike O’Connor, Chief Club Instructor of the Handbridge Shotokan Karate Club was promoted to 7th Dan black belt at the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) National Championships in Leicester. Sensei Mike, in his 10th year of being a 6th Dan, was at the Championships as he has been since 1976 in the role of one of the KUGB’s National referees and had been working as such throughout the elimination rounds. Sensei Mike said: “I was very moved that all my hard work in running the non-profit making Handbridge Shotokan Karate Club and attending training courses and being a referee at most of the KUGB National and local events was being recognised by this award. Since retirement, Mike, formerly acting plant protection manager at the Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port, took advantage of his free time and became a full time Karate instructor. It is believed that Mike is the first Cestrian to become a KUGB 7th Dan. He teaches every Monday and Thursday in the newly refurbished gym of the Queens Park High School in Handbridge Chester, classes for beginners and Kyu grades are from 6pm to 7pm each night and from 7pm to 8.30pm for Black Belts. Mike added: “We are very proud that we have served Handbridge and Chester as a centre of KUGB Karate excellence for over 49 years, which has included winning the Griffin Award for People in the Community for the running of a totally non-profit making club in Chester.” Hanshi Sherry 9th Dan congratulating sensei Mike on his 7th Dan promotion.

GARDEN DESIGN & PLANTING PROJECTS EXPERT ADVICE & GARDEN CONSULTANCY GARDEN REJUVENATION & REPLANTING ONGOING QUALITY GARDEN AFTERCARE

ABOUT ME “I’ve always been mad about plants and gardens - I sowed my first packet of marigold seeds in my parents’ garden when I was 4 years old! I’ve got a degree in Horticulture and I’ve worked in a variety of horticultural roles, including a year at Kew Gardens. I set up Tim Does Gardens in 2016 to give my clients in Cheshire, the Wirral and London beautiful gardens that are full of year round colour, fragrance and interest”

“Tim has a real passion and knowledge of gardening and garden design. He’s head and shoulders above another gardener I used and he’s helped me create a beautiful garden” “Tim is reliable, makes excellent recommendations, sticks to budgets and does great work for me. My garden stayed lovely until much later in the year than usual”

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

High summer in July J

uly and August are dominated by flowering perennials to bring colour into your garden. Visit one of the flower shows or some of the gardens open in July to get ideas for planting schemes to try at home. A few shrubs are in flower at this time including the classic Lavender. They revel in gravelly dry soil so are ideal for dry gardens. If you have a wall that needs something to drape over the edge, grow the English Lavender with pale blue flowers and aroma as you brush by. For a complete contrast try Spirea Golden Princess with bright yellow green leaves and magenta pink flowers. This shrub will grow into a low mound, can grow on dry or heavier soils in sun and if it gets too large, cut back hard in February. Perennial borders need plants of different heights and I recommend Veronicastrum virginicum Fascination growing to 2m tall with spikes of pale pink flowers. With it you can plant Hemerocallis or day lilies with their broad strappy leaves and bright colours from pink to red and yellow. They will grow up to 80cm tall. Another good companion is Phlox paniculata Prospero with pink flowers also a taller grower to 80cm. All these will enjoy a moisture retentive soil in sun. If you have a well drained soil then Lychnis coronaria with felted silver leaves and zingy pink or classy white flowers, is for you. For those gardens with damp, well drained soil, I would try Monarda didyma or Bergamot, a perennial with shaggy whorls of pink or red flowers up to 70cms. What to get on with in the garden? Keep pots well watered and stood in saucers to retain moisture. Cut back your evergreen hedges in July and August so that new growth has a chance to ripen and not be damaged in winter. Prune shrubs that flowered in June such as Deutzia, Weigela and Philadelphus. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. On 14th and 25th July, 8A Warwick Drive, Altrincham is open. If you love flower arranging then visit to seek ideas from the herbaceous border and see the new areas developing. Stretton Old Hall, Tilston, Malpas is open on 15th July and planting is described as “controlled exuberance. Five acres of gardens divided into discrete areas including herbaceous borders, kitchen garden and scree garden.

Sun shines on Handbridge’s big day The Handbridge Community Association has been praised for its organisation of a Royal Wedding Day at Edgar’s Field Park. The day was a huge success with big crowds enjoying the glorious weather in late May. It began with maypole dancing by students of Overleigh St Mary’s Primary School, a football competition, dog show and live music at Grosvenor Arms. Local councillors Cllr Razia Daniels and Cllr Neil Sullivan said: “We would like to say many congratulations and well done to all the students of Overleigh for their fantastic Maypole Dance performance and also many thanks to Susanna Dixon for organising the Maypole Dance and a very special thank you to Brown Sugar for providing cakes.”

The benefits of sun HAVING had such lovely start to June with the beautiful warm sunny weather and which may be a distant memory by the time you read this, as the weather may have returned to its prevailing westerly wind and troughs from the Atlantic, you may be wondering why I should be talking about the benefits of sun screen. Even on overcast days the damaging and premature ageing ultra violet rays are still particularly strong in the middle of the day. Always wear at least Factor 30 on your face, hands and dĂŠcolletage every day. Make it a daily routine to apply after your moisturiser. As we treat a large number of clients with sun damage by IPL Laser it is interesting to note the number of people that have brown sun damage spots and larger patches around the temple area by the side of their eye. I can only conclude that this is because even the most diligent of sun screen

appliers miss that area when applying their sun cream! We all look and feel better with a light sun tan and of course we benefit from the absorption of Vitamin D from sunshine too - a vitamin that is drastically low in the majority of the British population. Luckily we can take supplements for Vitamin D. Also it has been scientifically proven that Vitamin D is still absorbed through sun screen. High Factor sun screen is essential for babies, children and young adults as it is during those formative years that SO much damage can be done to the deeper layers of the skin. Brown sun spots are usually a result of sun exposure from many decades in the past. Sadly skin cancer from sun exposure and the over use of sun beds is on the increase year on year and worryingly in more young people. In extreme cases this can be fatal and even in lesser cases the treatment can be very disfiguring from

absorbed into the skin and do its job most effectively.

Luckily there are so many excellent sun screens available now that there is really no excuse to be burnt and red and sore. Always look for a sun cream that has UVA and UVB protection. I am not a fan of the once a day application sun screens as sweating, towel drying, swimming will all have a diminishing effect on the cream and so if you are lying out in the sun all day on your holidays you should always reapply every few hours. Preferably stay under the sun umbrella between midday and 3.00p.m.when the sun is at its strongest. Gone are the days when we were covered in thick, sticky, sweaty cream that made us look ghostly. Most sun creams absorb well, are non sticky and are most importantly, if used correctly, effective. Always apply the sun screen before you venture out in the sun to give it time to be

They are all oil free and range from Factor 30 to Factor 50. We also offer Brush On Block which is a Factor 30 Brush on powder which you literally brush on with a large soft brush. Children love the feel of it and it really works. Its a great one to use when they are off to school in the morning. Just close their eyes and brush it on. Praise for long serving hospice staff

Lynne Moorhead receives her award from Robert Mee and Margaret Hopkins

Over 30 members of staff at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd have been recognised for dedicating long service. The chairman of trustees, Robert Mee along with fellow trustee Margaret Hopkins presented the awards to 30 staff members who have achieved 10, 15, 20 or 25 years of continuous service. The event took place in a Marquee in the Backford hospice grounds which has been actively used as part of the Hospice Community Engagement Week to engage with the local community. Some of those recognised at the ceremony included Social Worker, Lynne Moorhead from the Hospice Family Support Team. Lynne, joined the Hospice 23 years ago She said: “Since joining 23 years ago I have seen the Hospice grow, both in numbers of staff and the number of patients we treat. In my time here I have been lucky to have met and worked with wonderful people and been part of a diverse team which goes from strength to strength. I thoroughly enjoy demonstrating how Hospice staff work together to provide the best care for patients and families with a life limiting illness.” Hospice chief executive Margaret Wright said: “It makes us very proud to recognise the longstanding support and hard work of so many of our staff. That level of continuity is vital in helping us progress our services and our patients benefit massively from their dedication. They all thoroughly deserve this recognition.” The Hospice of the Good Shepherd is a local independent charity providing end of life care and support for patients, their families and carers living with cancer and other life limiting illnesses in Chester, West Cheshire, Ellesmere Port and Deeside.

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

Install a loft ladder and make more use of your loft!

Loft ladder, Light & Switch plus 50 sqft of flooring from as little as £277+VAT which includes FREE fitting in less than a day. Over 1500 people have chosen us to fit their loft ladder, this is because we offer: • A FREE home visit • A FREE written quotation

Hayley’s health and fitness

Don't get fat this summer BBQ and wine on a Friday evening when the sun is out - there has to be nothing nicer. Few beers and it’s time to relax and tuck into the massive feast of endless meats and nibbles. Us Brits like to take full advantage of the good weather when we have it, making the most of the late evenings with wine and goodies. Here’s how to make it a little less indulgent so we don’t get fat this summer. Choose lean meats for a BBQ, chicken breasts marinated in a spicy sauce with a salad with no dressing is actually a really good option for healthy eating. Staying away from processed meats such as burgers and sausages is wise but cutting out the buns can save yourself unnecessary calories. Steaks with a sweet potato are another healthier alternative to the processed meats. Portion control is something to be mindful of also. People often when buying for the weekend treats buy double, even triple the amount they actually will need, yet find it very easy to consume the lot in one sitting. An average cheese burger is 317 calories, hot dogs 155 calories, 90 calories per rib, potato salad is 357 calories per cup, 150 calories per bottle of beer, white wine 121 calories per glass. So, adding this up for an average meal, 1 hot dog, 1 burger, 4 beers, salad 5 ribs that’s without any other bits you might have we’re near to 1,900 calories in one meal without added extras. Add on extra drinks, all your food from the rest of the day and it’s easy to see how weight can creep on. Exercise is also something that may go out the window when the weather is nice. Do you

go to your regular exercise when it’s 30 degrees outside answer is probably no! However, work hard in the week and the weekends might not be so bad. Skip the hard work in the week and over indulge at the weekends and it’s no wonder your hot pants are feeling a little tighter. It’s useful to get your old summer clothes out a few months before the summer months to allow time to see where you re at. If work needs to be done this gives you time to get sorted and get yourself back on track, trying to squeeze back into last year’s clothes when you only have two weeks to do it in isn’t the best idea. So be mindful of portions, how much you have already consumed throughout the day and about picking the healthier options. Exercise and stay committed and don’t use the weather as an excuse to skip training! Written for Talkabout Publishing by Hayley Ryder Personal Trainer and Class instructor 07551 878786
