Campaign to preserve the tree-lined streets of Handbridge A local campaigner is asking the council to give the tree-lined streets of Handbridge conservation area status. Reg Barritt, from the Handbridge Residents’ Council, wants to see protection for Appleyards Lane, Upper Hartington Street, Eaton Avenue and Eccleston Avenue. He believes that conservation status will ensure that the trees are retained, given that councils in other parts of the country have chopped trees down on the grounds of highway safety and because of the costs associated with maintaining them. He also wants the grass verges to be protected, by measures to keep a lid on front extensions which have had the effect of limiting parking at the front of properties, thereby shifting cars onto verges. Mr Barritt said: “Clearly there is an urgent need for this deteriorating situation to be addressed to secure the quality and nature of the verges and trees that remain.

Handbridge community centre opens in June The formal opening of the new St Mary’s Handbridge Centre takes place in June. The Bishop of Chester will cut the ribbon on Sunday 10th June, at 6.30pm. The centre will be open for visitors from 4.30pm that day. People are welcome to have a look round. The centre will provide a new hub for community activities for everyone, from the very young through to the elderly. A new car park for the centre will be located on additional land donated by the Grosvenor Estate underneath which a recent archaeological excavation revealed part of a small Roman farm enclosure, and evidence of a late post-medieval clamp kiln, which was used to manufacture bricks for local use. Provision within the centre includes a hall and two community rooms to meet the needs of a range of organisations, groups and clubs. All the rooms will be linked to wi-fi and in the main rooms audio and visual presentation equipment will be provided. A commercial standard kitchen will provide very good facilities for catering. A servery area within the main area of the centre, where light refreshments can be prepared, will provide a pleasant place for relaxation and socialising.

GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Blooms for June T

here are many beautiful perennials flowering in June and it is difficult to choose which ones to have in the garden.

I would love to have delphiniums but the slugs get them in my heavy soil. However, if you can keep the slugs off, they can pop up each year with tall spires of rich blue, pink or white flowers. In autumn many will flower again if you cut the dead flowering spikes off in summer. Another reliable perennial for damper soils are the magnificent Rodgersias with their large Horse Chestnut shaped leaves and tall robust stems with white or red flowers. I saw them at Dunham Massey garden last year growing with huge Alliums. Alliums will flower each year and are often teamed with roses. Will thrive in heavier well drained soils and are especially good in drier borders. Shrubs can form the backbone of a border so why not indulge in a Deutzia. A small on Deutzia Gracilis has little white flowers or Rosealind a taller shrub to 1m with rich pink clusters of flowers. They will grow in sun or lights shade and any soil provided it is not dry. For a larger shrub or small tree one of my favourites are the Sambucus or Elderflower with the purple or golden foliage. Sambucus Black Beauty likes a damp heavy soil and has pink flowerheads in early summer. Make Elderflower cordial with the flowers and it will be pink! Roses are centre stage in June so make sure you feed them well with a proprietary rose feed, spray with soapy water to remove an excess of whitefly and keep dead heading them. Work to be done in the garden includes trimming Privet and Box hedging. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering. Keep climbing roses and clematis tied in and under control. Keep removing any side shoots from tomatoes. Thin apples, apricots and plums where there are many fruitlets on stems to one or two. Continue planting radishes, small carrots and lettuces for succession. If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support. 150 Barrel Well Hill, Boughton, Chester is open on 23rd and 24th June. A terraced garden with informal cottage garden planting and some unusual plants. Natural springs with a stream lined with bog loving plants. Burton Village Gardens are open on 23rd June with three gardens open, Briarfield, Burton Manor Walled Garden and Trustwood, ranging from more formal to informal gardens with a wide range of plants and wild life habitats.

Cllr Daniels is pictured with The Interiors Shop owner Rosalind Ellis.

Rosalind fulfils life-long dream by opening her own shop Chester’s Lord Mayor Cllr Razia Daniels had the pleasure of opening the new Interiors Shop, in Westminster Park. At the exclusive launch event, attendees indulged in delicious canapes and cocktails, whilst browsing the range. The first independent endeavour from Rosalind Ellis, the store stocks modern and vintage influences on Rosalind’s interior design style and predominately focuses on quality and individuality. Rosalind said: “Having spent many years working in the corporate world, opening the store is the realisation of a life-long daydream, as I spent my childhood wandering wide-eyed and intrigued around my grandmother’s and mother’s antique shops. “Despite the rise of online shopping we feel strongly that there is an important place for physical shops and have invested time and money in designing a retail space that we hope people will enjoy visiting as much as we enjoy working in. We feel that when it comes to investing in items for your home, you can’t beat being able to see, feel and size them up before committing to the purchase. However, for those unable to visit the shop, our items will also be available online so that no one misses out!” 22 To advertise call 350398 www.overleighroundabout.co.uk

Ditch environmental for a healthier skin I am disappointed to find that so many people are still cleansing their faces with wet wipes. Not only are they mostly made up of a plastic material which is bad for the environment, but they generally contain alcohol. Even one of the popular brands which says alcohol free on the front, lists alcohol in its ingredients. Alcohol is very drying, stripping the skin of its natural oils and damaging the delicate lipid barrier. The dry skin caused by the wipes is not only ageing, encouraging milia, but also worsens acne conditions. Oil is trapped under the dry skin making it a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Wet wipes are responsible for 93% of all blockages at our sewerage works and responsible for flooding people’s homes with contaminated water. Cleansing your face with a suitable cleanser and removing it with water with a face cloth or soft muslin cloth is so simple. If you apply your cleanser just before your shower you can rinse it off in the shower. At the end of the day if you have worn make-up wash your face once with cleanser to remove the make-up, dirt and pollution and then wash again to really clean the skin and gently exfoliate. You can have a number of face cloths on the go and then wash them with your bath towels. Wipes are inefficient at deeply cleansing the skin as they only skim over the surface. A really good cleanser will allow you to massage well into the skin, cleansing deep into the pores and leaving your skin refreshed, hydrated and wonderfully soft. Our cleansers at Hough Green Clinic cater for

all skin types including problematic skins such as acne. The Elizabeth Arden PRO Clarifying Foaming Cleanser removes excess oil and debris while providing essential hydration. Its key ingredients are Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid. Elizabeth Arden PRO Gentle Facial Cleanser is a light lathering cleanser that gently exfoliates, removes makeup and daily residue. It contains Lactic Acid and essential vitamin antioxidants A, C and E together with a soothing complex. This is ideal for all skin types including very sensitive. The two cleansers from the award winning British Vitage range include Vitage Revitalising Daily Cleanser which is a multifunction light gel

containing potent antioxidants and Aloe Vera and Allantoin. It becomes a creamy emulsion when water is added. Vitage Essential Cleansing Balm is a wonderful cleanser that can also be used as a massage oil. It is the first cleansing balm to contain manula oil being a concentrated source of Vitamin C and E and rich in Omega 9 and 6 which balances, brightens and nourishes the skin. It also contains soothing rose and neroli fragrance. Bitter orange tightens and tones; almond oils enriched with Vitamin E, A and B to seal in moisture, and grape seed oil and rose hip oil to hydrate. It smells divine too.

If you wish to sample any of the above cleansers please call Sam, Lynn or myself on 01244 680414 to arrange a free sample. Remember to apply your Factor 30 daily to your face, neck and décolletage AND the backs of your hands to avoid those sun spots! We can treat them successfully with IPL/Laser, but prevention is best.

Young oarsmen win silver Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club had a great weekend representing the North West Region against the rest of the country at the Inter-regional Regatta in Nottingham. The most celebrated race of the day was the J16 boys final which saw Year 11 student Gwilym Harris from QPHS and his doubles partner Patrick Brogan, from Northwich Rowing Club, in a nail biting and epic battle for the finish line. The boys ended the race in a dead heat for second place winning them the coveted and acclaimed silver medals in the process. Meanwhile, the year 9 boys Dylan Howard and Iestyn Burke battled well in their J14 double to get a place in the A final, beating the likes of the renowned Henley Rowing Club! They finished in fifth place after another close race to the finish line. An additional well done to QPHS Year 11 girls, Kiera Burke and Zara Gautier-Price who were representing the North West Region for the second year running and finished in a respectably ranked 10th place in the J16 girls double event. All in all, it was yet another successful day of rowing for Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club with the results of all the races contributing to the North West team claiming an overall fourth place. QPHSRC chairman Richard Cox said: “The Junior Inter-regional Regatta is a culmination of all the best crews across the country, these are all picked to represent their region and have to race over 1500m numerous times on the day. Our rowers have been training for six days a week in the lead up to the event, before and after school. This shows great commitment and drive to succeed from them and I would like to thank them all for their efforts and equally their coaches for making it happen.”

Patrick Brogan, coach Barrie Blake and Gwilym Harris.

Can you sparkle for the hospice? Chester residents are being encouraged to sign up as a volunteer for the Chester Sparkle Night Walk which will take place on Friday 15th June, in aid of Hospice of the Good Shepherd. More than 75 volunteers are needed to marshall the route and help with setting up the event to ensure that all participants can take part safely. Justin Caroe, hospice community fundraiser, said: “Our Chester Sparkle Night Walk is reliant on an army of enthusiastic volunteers to be a success. Their presence is paramount to keeping it running smoothly and safely.” The Chester Sparkle Night Walk starts at Grosvenor Park and will see hundreds of walkers ‘sparkle’ under the stars. The 5km circular route through Chester City Centre passes iconic buildings and locations along the way including: Chester Cathedral, Eastgate Clock,Chester Racecourse and finishes within the Amphitheatre. Justin added: “The hospice relies on donations for the majority of its income, so events like the Chester Sparkle Night Walk are a vital way of raising funds. There is always a fantastic atmosphere, so I’d encourage everyone to come along and be part of an incredible event that helps support the only adult hospice in Chester.” The Hospice of the Good Shepherd doesn’t make a charge to patients for using the services but it does cost £11,000 per day for the hospice to provide the necessary care and support. Volunteers will need to be on-site from 7pm until around 1am depending on the role and refreshments will be provided. If you would like to volunteer your help please email fundraising@ hospicegs.com or call 01244 851 811. If you are interested in taking part in the event please sign up here https://www.tickettailor.com/events/hospiceofthegoodshepherd/146159 Caroline Siddall, director of fundraising, lottery and retail outside banner at Grosvenor Park

Students’ poems featured in Storyhouse A group of Year 7 studentsat Queen’s Park High School took part in an innovative poetry workshop as part of a project organised by Storyhouse in Chester. Poet Sara Hirsch helped students create poems based on identity, libraries, history and stories which were then printed in their own handwriting and displayed on the walls around the building. One poem is now displayed outside the baby changing room and another is featured in the teenage fiction section of the library.

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

Install a loft ladder and make more use of your loft!

Love Hoole Loyalty Scheme to be extended to all of CH2 The Love Hoole loyalty scheme - where one loyalty card works in multiple participating stores to collect points and gain rewards - has had a very successful 18 months in Hoole and now has over 2,000 registered card holders! A recent survey of all card holders said that they agreed the community scheme was a good idea (95%) and exactly half (50%) of them are now spending more in Hoole as a result. The scheme has also raised over £700 in donations supported entirely by local cardholders and vendors that in turn sees the money returned to the local area. Charities connected with the scheme now include Claire House, The Hoole Community Centre and The Countess Charity. Chester-based Rob Meakin, Managing Director at Loyalty Pro Ltd who initiated the scheme, said, “Convenience is everything to the customer these days and the beauty of the Love Hoole scheme is that customers only need one loyalty card for lots of different shops. We needed to prove this concept in a community environment whilst using industry-leading technology. We’re delighted with the outcome and positive feedback from all involved so we now plan to roll out the scheme to the whole of the CH2 postcode, not just Hoole. You will see we have a new card in circulation but both old and new will work in all participating

stores. It’s exciting times for us as we widen our reach and launch our app to support the scheme for those that are happy to use a smart phone instead of a physical card.” Meakin continues with, “Giving traders the ability to offer their loyal customers rewards based on their spend by contacting them via email, text or in app messaging is where the true value of the scheme is. Our aim is to give the local trader community the marketing tools that are only normally available to the big supermarkets to help them compete and ensure the area stays vibrant. It’s a great way to get customers through the door and keep the community spirit alive.” The extended roll out into the whole of CH2 is happening now and the app is available to download on Google Play and The App Store, so consumers can start shopping right away! Once they’ve accumulated points, they can get a monetary reward in store or donated to one of the registered local charities. All donated points are currently being funded by Loyalty Pro as another way for them to give back to the community. For more information call Loyalty Pro Ltd on 0800 612 9747 or visit the schemes website: www.lovehoole.com.
